I’d like to know more about the OOT masquerade scheme ☺️

Aha, thanks for asking, it's one I'm very excited about. So, I noticed a severe lack of light-hearted fics in the OoT zelink fandom. Longer ones with plot, anyway. It's always hero's shade this and trauma that... Yes, I know my own isn't exactly all sunshine either, but I'm here to fix this terrible situation!

The premise of this story is that Zelda begs her father to arrange a betrothal between her and Link before he leaves for Termina. It's a child's castle in the air, but her father loves her very much so he agrees. Under one condition: Link must come back and ask for her hand until her 21st birthday or the betrothal will be resolved.

The story somehow leaves the castle walls and becomes some kind of fairy tale legend. It helps to keep up the mysterious air that Link never comes back.

By now, Zelda's 21st birthday is approaching rapidly. Someone suggests a festival of three days of masquerade balls. The idea is that she either accepts the hand of another man that she has met on the balls or that Link might come back to fulfill the betrothal.

Of course, the people are thrilled about this. A month before the festival, Castle Town fills up with country knights, noblemen, and other important people. Zelda's ladies-in-waiting are especially excited about a handsome young nobleman who ignores all their approaches because he's certain he can win Zelda's favor.

The festival approaches and the Sheikah provide their magic of light and shadow to give Zelda the chance of getting to know her suitors without worrying about decorum. Their magic lets the mask become one with the face of the wearer so that only they can see the true face of the visitors. It's truly anonymous!

Zelda is indeed enchanted by one of the guests; it happens to be the nobleman who was so sure he had a chance. She uses her own magic to become Sheik for one of the evenings but unfortunately, the Sheikah magic doesn't work for her, so she still can't tell who he is.

And what about Link? Will he really wait until the very last second to surprise her like the rumors say? It's just gossip. It must be! He has never been seen again since that fateful day ten years ago...

OoT Zelink, early secret relationship pre secret marriage

Princess Zelda walked through the castle gardens, enjoying the brisk morning air of early summer. 

As she walked, she heard some noises coming from the knights training area. That’s weird, I thought the knights aren’t training today. Curious, she made her way over to investigate. 

As she approached, the sounds of someone training became more familiar. Zelda turned the corner, smiling fondly in anticipation of greeting the suspected person. 

Zelda froze, pink dusting her cheeks.

Except, she hadn’t been expecting him to be like this. 

Link stood in front of one of the training dummies, long hair pulled into a high ponytail and bangs framing his face perfectly, as usual. He had evidently cast his shirt aside, as well as his socks and shoes. Link had rolled up the legs of his pants to just below the knee, and was fiercely striking the training dummy shirtless and barefoot. Sparkling beads of sweat adorned his bare skin, and Zelda was failing to resist staring at his muscular build.

He paused his onslaught of attacks and turned to her. 

“Oh, greetings your highness! I wasn’t expecting your beautiful face to grace my presence this fine day.” he winked, then walked over to his pile of things and set the sword down, exchanging it for a small white hand towel. He wiped the sweat off his face and draped the towel around his neck.

Before Zelda had the chance to fully recover her wits, Link was gently lifting her hand to his mouth, giving it a kiss as he smiled at her, mischief in his eyes and a smirk on his face. His cheeks were a soft red, but it was difficult to tell if that was just from the training or not. 

“I- um… uh…” she stuttered, trying desperately to get her thoughts into order. “Hello there, Link. I was not expecting to see you here. I see you’re training, do not let me interrupt you. I was simply going for a stroll and came to see what was going on.” Zelda’s eyes strayed to his bare chest, then she quickly averted her gaze, intently studying the unused training dummies. 

Link chuckled. “I see. It would be much safer for the princess to be accompanied on her stroll through the gardens, shall I accompany you My Dear Princess?”

Zelda’s eyes grew wide. She quickly returned to a more neutral expression, smiling fondly at the (still shirtless) hero before her. “I would love to have your company, Link.”

“Excellent. Allow me to get my sword.” Link turned and made his way back to his pile of things, placing the towel back down and grabbing the sword and scabbard from the pile. He affixed them around his waist and turned back to Zelda with a devilish smirk. “Shall we go?”

Zelda’s eyes grew wide again, once more wandering. “L-like that?” her cheeks were a lovely bright red now. 

Link rested a hand on one hip, the other resting on the hilt of his sword. “What, do you not like seeing me like this?” 

“No! I- wait-” Zelda hid her face behind her hands, trying to think up a suitable comeback. 

Link just stood there, helpfully smirking handsomely.

A thought finally struck her and Zelda lowered her hands, smiling innocently. “We can’t risk others seeing you like this, My Dear Hero, or they shall all think a God of Beauty has descended among us.” Zelda rested her own hand on her hip, smirking and relishing in the deep shades Link’s face was turning. “We can’t have everyone staring at you like that, now can we? No, it would be far better to hide your striking handsomeness beneath that tunic of yours.”

Link attempted to speak, but only jumbled nonsense came out. Zelda laughed, then walked over to Link and gently smacked the back of his head. 

“Put some clothes on, you stinker.” 

He gave her a lopsided grin and brought a hand to his forehead in salute. “Yes Ma’am!” 

Both broke out into laughter, and Link finally caved and put his clothes back on, retrieving his things and returning to her side once more. 

“Better, my love?”

Zelda got on her tiptoes and landed a swift kiss to his cheek. “Better. Shall we go, My Hero?”

“Yes, let's.” a subtle pink dusted Link’s cheeks once more, and the two walked off towards the gardens, side by side and chatting about nothing in particular.

*starlight (botw link) - his name is actually signed 'star fragment', representing his adventurous, questing nature. he thrives in the wild, and he's rare and lucky himself, like a star fragment. he's also one of the few people who manages to find star fragments, so isha especially loves using that name. when spoken, however, it's a little awkward, so it gets changed to starlight. it is also a reference to how botw opens (zelda says 'you are the light, our light that must shine on hyrule once again'. but i didn't want to just call him light lol)

*archive (botw zelda) - this is mostly a placeholder while i think abt it, but. she likes history and research and documenting stuff :-) also she's a woman out of time, going from her life 100 years ago to now

*charm, captain (hyrule warriors link) - he is handsome and charming :) need i say more

*grace (hyrule warriors zelda) - she is lovely and graceful :) also sounds cute with charm

*bee (alttp, oracle games) - he is a busy adventurer (a busy bee, if you will) (also an affectionate nod to therunawayguys' alttp playthrough, where emile called it the 'bee-percent run'. this was my first introduction to alttp)

*cloud (skyward sword link) - a) he's a daydreamer (head in the clouds) b) he literally lives in the clouds. the links are very creative

-his sign name is actually 'sleepyhead', a gift from zelda in their youth

*sunshine (sws zelda) - sunshine was the sign name link gave her as kids, but it became especially fitting with the whole hylia deal, yanno?

*twilight / farmboy (tp link) - i could not come up with anything else. if i change my mind, y'all'll know. also thank u rar for farmboy <3

*tune (ww link) - a pun on 'toon link', but also refers to the musical nature of him playing the winds. there is no formal sign language on the great sea, but the folks on outset made a rudimentary version for him; aryll has always called him big brother, both speaking and in their sign

*tetra (ww zelda) - y'all know why

*fay / sprite (oot link) - malon calls him fairy boy. she is the only one allowed to do so. 'sprite' is technically mm link, and what charm called him during the war (but i haven't played mm or hw yet)

*wimple (oot zelda) - this is her sign name. i'm working on another nickname, but this works for now

*hazel (loz1+2 link) - hazel is a durable, resilient wood that can grow even under less-than-ideal circumstances. seemed a cute name (i'm still working on their character development)

*honey (albw, tfh, la link) - this was mostly a joke to parallel bee. just kinda stuck tho

*clover (minish cap link) - partly due to that art of him with the minish under the clovers, partly because four-leaf clovers are lucky. idk i just liked it

*fortune (minish cap zelda) - goes along with the lucky nature of link

*hex (loz cdi link) - this is a JOKE like yes he will actually show up, at least in paint chips, but still

*jinx (loz cdi zelda) - again, JOKE. but coordinated name with hex :)

*prism (fsa link) - i have thoughts abt fsa but i'll have to go rewatch trg play it. he won't come into play for a while anyway but

So Aang being a master airbender among those in-training was completely fair, but suddenly knowing he’s the Avatar isn’t fair at all? Yeah ok

o-oh, did i ever mention i used to have a huge crush on zuko? it was sometime after my crushes on OoT Link and Slade (yes, really) wore off

Zuko, internally: “why does he want his friends to suck on frogs. is this a joke?”

I don’t think..Aang’s talk with Zuko in this episode is even brought up later on, the only thing is Aang using Kuzon as his Fire Nation alias, and then the comic (or cancelled comic) about aang and kuzon

the town would’ve still been doomed by all the smoke, the way-more-than-that falling pumice, plus all the other areas around the volcano....

there are PLENTY of powerful benders in the series, like Toph, Zuko, Azula, and so on, the reason why Aang is the one is because Katara was already developing feelings for him before the realization in this episode. I guess this means Aang forced her into loving him :^) no im not still bitter over fandom after all these years
