also say what you want about kaiba but he had the most drastic impact on men's fashion since the invention of the suit
like he changed the whole silhouette people go for with their coats for an entire generation after him, with the tight form fitting torso and the absurdly flared waist, plus the shoulder pads and the high collars for everyone
even pro duelists with less dramatic styles like ed still favor lighter colors and you can't tell me that's not because kaiba wears a white statement piece everywhere

okay for the record because i haven't stopped thinking about it if i did a ygo-based au for the hctcg i think it would go something like. years ago, a game developer, vintage beef, vanished for two months. when he came back, he came back with HERMITCRAFT, a card game about a war between various fantasy kingdoms said to be set in another dimension, as well as half the specs for special goggles that allowed people to experience that game as though it were really happening. the game spread like wildfire, growing increasingly popular, and quickly began to be treated like a sport, especially due to the spectacular way the hermits would fight when viewed with the goggles.
beef then, despite being possibly now one of the most revered designers of anything on the planet, dropped into obscurity. or, well, not obscurity - everyone knows his name, after all. just... out of the public, leaving his game to spread, and spread, and spread.
our protagonist - going back and forth on who this would be, honestly, but i'm really tempted to say this is etho - is a semi-popular HERMITCRAFT player who films himself playing exhibition matches to entertain, as well as to earn money for his small community. also, if he feels a strange, almost eerie connection to the game... well, that's for him and him alone to think about.
one day, he, along with several other competitors, get a mysterious letter. it's from vintage beef himself - he's holding a tournament? etho nearly doesn't go. only, that prize money... he could do a LOT for his town with that kind of prize money. it's all-expenses, too. he can attend. the worst that will happen is he loses, and given that he'll probably get more notoriety as a player ANYWAY at such an exclusive event, it'll turn out alright, right?
of course, this is a yugioh au. that tournament is more than a simple tournament, and etho's hardly the only one with a strange connection to this game...

My YGO Hetero Ships: Part 1
Wanted to make a little post about my Yugioh hetero ships because I feel like I don't talk about them much. And then the post wasn't little, oh well. Mostly Trustshipping and Polarshipping rants.
Peachshipping is a bit of a foregone conclusion for me. It's intuitive and I think they work so well together and are good for each other. I use it as a world-filling background ship a lot because it's just so... obvious to me? And wholesome, don't forget wholesome. It's sweet, it's positive, it's healthy. I don't have a strong grasp on either character which is why I haven't written it, and I don't feel passionately about it, but I do support it.
Blueshipping was the very first ship I ever wrote in my very first fanfic ever, and while I do support the ship, I haven't written it since then. There is implied past Mizushipping in Rock Bottom, but Kisara still dies like canon, so tragic ending and Seth is rekt. Like Peachshipping, this one is a no-brainer for me, it just only exists when Kisara gets to live/come back, because otherwise it's pure angst and tragedy.
Trustshipping is in the future for a current unfinished fic but I haven't actually written it otherwise. Currently working on a one-shot wip with my husband for it though. This is one that I do feel quite passionately about because I think Ishizu is one of the few people that even has a chance at getting close to Kaiba, in terms of purely canonical characterizations. And in terms of non-pure canonical characterizations (aka the fun stuff), there's even more potential for passion and romance. I think they've both had to grow up too fast, take care of their little brothers, deal with abusive fathers, make difficult decisions, and be forced into a role that they didn't ask for/weren't ready for. There will be understanding, patience, and compassion there, mostly just from Ishizu but you get the idea. The dragon doesn't want to be tamed but gradually realizes the benefits of the arrangement. She's strong-spirited in a quiet way and she won't let Kaiba treat her poorly. People might think she's Kaiba's trophy wife at first, being exotic and beautiful, but I think she can absolutely hold her own with poise, class, and wit. Whenever she has to go to a snobby social event with him, people will gradually realize that he didn't tame her, she tamed him. Ishizu the dragon-tamer. He is her dragon, she is his queen. She's not a trophy wife, she's not a gold-digger. Neither of them are a prize to be won. This is a partnership, and if you ever disrespect one of them in front of the other, you will be flayed with their words. She will also absolutely have her own career in Egyptology/Archaeology which helps to discourage the conception that she married him for any reason besides her love for him.
Polarshipping is another one that I think I've only written once, and it was in the context of Ettushipping, but I stan it quite hard. I won't shut up about it anytime Mai and Joey are in a scene together when I watch Yugioh with my husband. ("Omg look at the way he smiles at her! And look at the way she looks at him! And OMG he would die for her, this boy is too pure!!") I think I've used it as a background ship before a couple times maybe? But I love their canon storyline together and their dynamic (and I can even appreciate what happens for them in Season Four, even though that season kinda ruins Mai and does her all kinds of dirty, Joey's determination to help her despite her turning on them, despite Tristan saying "you're better off letting her go because I don't want to see you get hurt again", is one of the sweetest things and Joey is such a puppy and once they finally get together, I hope Mai understands what a Good Boy she has and absolutely spoils him). I do feel strongly about them and I want to write them at least one-shot at some point.

In terms of your YGO/HS AU, how did the characters get their abilities and roles?
Well let's see:
Yugi Heir of Space As Space player he's responsible for making the genesis frog thus making the new universe. Yugi's quest is to solve puzzles that will ultimately help him breed the right frog. Yami Yugi Prince of Time
Timeline management basically Yami is trying to keep everything form falling apart and turning their session into a doom timeline. Yami isn't aware of it yet but he is form a pre-scratch session which was doomed thanks to Zork's interference causing them to loose their space player. Technically this session wasn't supposed to have a Time player but due to shenanigans they have him and he has to prevent that same event that doomed his original session before.
Joey Knight of Light Joey's luck can be a coin toss for him most of the time but he manages to use his light powers to help him win battles. Light also means knowledge and it's actually Joey who discovers Bakura and Marik are working together to take over their session. When he God Tiers he also manages to make a light saber for himself lol.
Tea Sylph of Hope Tea is basically the healer and morale booster of the group, due to her hope powers she's seen as an obstacle that needs to be dealt with by both Marik and Bakura.
Tristan Mage of Breath Mostly a fighter for the group and doing the windy thing to help out when he can, he's also support for the group.
Kaiba Maid of Rage Emotion has always been one of Kaiba's strengths so for him weaponize his rage and anger into ways to help him win is always a plus for him. He's mostly pissed that to ensure a fruitful session has to relay on both Yugi and Yami for the ultimate prize, but that just means he'll be in charge of taking down the Black King. But things take a bad turn when he realizes Mokuba is also in the session and has gone missing.
Bakura Thief of Life Bakura's main goal is to bring Zork into their session so he can basically destroy all life and prevent a new universe. Bakura is also form the pre-scratch session Yami came form and tagged along with him after the scratch so he could continue with his plan. He begrudgingly helps Marik with his take over plan since he still needs him to complete his own plans.
Ryou Page of Void Ryou was killed right after he entered the session thanks to Bakura, but Ryou's dream self was awakened and managed to escape into the void before Bakura's dreamself could find and kill him there. Ryou sticks to the void and manages to uncover many secrets he uses to help his friends form the shadows.
Marik Witch of Mind Marik entered the session with the intent to over take the entirety of it and rule the new universe as god. He god tiers early enough to gain his full witch powers which he uses to manipulate events to go the way he needs them to. But he gets throwted by Ishizu's interference trying to prevent his take over. Ishizu Seer of Doom Ishuzu enters the session to try and prevent Marik form over taking the session. Her doom powers allowed her to see everyone would die if Marik achieved his goals so she tries to stop each of Marik's attempts to over take the session.
Mai Witch of Heart Mai is also a fighter in their group but she's also trying to help Joey find Serenity whose lost in the session. Once she and and other figure out Marik is behind things, Mai attempts to stop Marik by separating his soul form his body but this leads to Yami Marik coming out killing her and causes a doomed timeline.
Yami Marik Prince of Blood When Marik uses his mind powers to try and prevent Mai form separating his soul form his body it results in Yami Marik taking over and using his blood powers to kill everyone, this forces Yami to destroy the timeline and use his time powers to go back and warn his other self of everything. Serenity ,Odion and Mokuba They aren't player characters they just hope a ride with one of the other players. Odion worked along side Marik to help him but when he dies it causes Yami Marik to come out. Both Serenity and Mokuba hitch a ride on their bother's session but become lost once they enter the medium. They meet up with each other on the battlefield and travel together to try and find their brothers. They end up bonding and becomes close friends, but are both killed by Yami Marik on a rampage.
This causes Kaiba to go Grimdark and attack Yami Marik their fight breaks the battlefield in half which causes more deaths including Joey, Tea, and Tristan. Yami Yugi tries to stop the fighting but is knocked down and out almost killed when Ryou comes in and voids him out of the way. The battle concludes on Yugi's planet where he's thrown into the forge and killed along with his genesis frog. Bakura is able to drain the life form both Kaiba and Yami Marik killing them.
Ryou shares the secrets he's learned form the void to Yami Yugi who uses his time powers to destroy this timeline.

Okay, so the synopses for the next few episodes were released as I was writing down/drafting my previous post. After reading them, can I please say what the FUCK are these match-ups??? Not because of who's Dueling who, but because of who even made it to the finals.
Wasn't Mitsuko managing a food stand for the tournament when we last saw her? Couldn't they have at least given us some glimpses of her competing during her free time? Heck, I don't recall Zwijo physically being present throughout the arc to actually take part in it.
Why the hell is Nyandestar in the finals when we clearly saw her with Manabu throughout the rushed premliminaries? I can possibly understand Rovian since we saw her Dueling in ep. 66, but her other appearances leading up to the finals have been watching the Rush Duels occur after she competed only one time. Was she conveniently watching them whenever she wasn't Dueling herself?
For that matter, how did Yuamu even make it to the finals? Protagonist armor? Tell, I can understand since he took a break from the Relic plotline to destress and there was nothing the narrative offered to sidetrack him, but the writers seriously couldn't bother making his first Rush Duel since ep. 5 be him taking part in at least one Duel in the preliminaries? As for Yuamu, I don't believe her qualification since she spent most of her tournament time investigating the Relic, topped with being brainwashed by it and losing to Yudias very early in the arc, being subtly but noticeably dumbed down in a few episodes, and joining the furniture store plotline.
How did Asaka and Yuna even qualify when all their screentime throughout the arc has been managing it alongside Phaser, wasting their time on its sponsor, and determining a better prize than the complete Mr. Universe manga instead of actually competing? Kaiba's role in the Battle City arc was much more believable since we got to see him host, manage, and take part in his own tournament.
Like I previously said, all of that could've been forgiven if it was simply due to Bridge doing 13-ish-episode arcs, but in this case, this is because of the arc having too many plotlines to follow. The writers spent so much time focusing on the Relic, the Epoch favoritism, and the Providence furniture store to the point where they're clashing with the Galaxy Cup on which one is more important. In turn, that prioritization has resulted in most of the aforementioned finalists not having any substantial indicators of them competing and advancing to the finals like verbal revelations or onscreen segements of them Rush Dueling to score high enough points. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the characters who did Duel on-screen in ep. 66—Chupataro, Manya, George, Bochi, and London—don't qualify because they're not relevant to the arc's cesspool of a plot despite most of them being major supporting characters like the others. With past YGO series, their tournament arcs had certain supporting casts advancing to the final bracket to distinguish who is a major or minor supporting character, complete with some form of onscreen participation or verbal/visual proof of their progress from them. Here, we don't get that; we are given proof of the finalists doing their own thing instead of competing, yet they all somehow did well in the preliminaries despite no screentime spent earning points to back that up. It's almost like the writers wanted them to qualify purely for the hell of it.
And you know what's sad? The show's first tournament, the Friendship Rush Duel Tournament, was handled so much better than this. All the members from both teams had onscreen participation, the supporting characters had relevant contributions regardless of them competing or not, and the arc consisted of only a couple plotlines that were each significant to the narrative in some way. Even the SEVENS fanservice wasn't overtaking GO RUSH!!'s identity at the time, and it both felt enjoyable and answered a good amount of questions, especially where the show takes place and how its characters are related to the SEVENS cast. The writers are clearly capable of writing a good tournament arc, yet I am baffled they tossed everything that made it work out the window and gave us this polar opposite mess.
I don't know if the second half of the Galaxy Cup arc will give us some justification on why the finalists even made it, but from the look of things, my hopes are far from high. Everything about it has been annoying at best and aggravating at worst so far, and something tells me it'll only continue to get worse.

4, 8, 15, 18, and 32 for the meme?
4. Favorite season/story arc?
Oh, this one is hard time narrow down! I absolutely love season 0, I think it's amazing and unhinged. But if we're talking about the series, it's going to be the battle city season. Manga, I would say it's harder to narrow down. It would be between death t, monster world or Otogi's story arc. I love each of those for different reasons, and its hard to choose between them.
8. Favorite antagonist/villain?
I had a whole thing typed about TKB/Bakura and how great he was until I remembered that technically, Seto Kaiba counts as an antagonist/villain. I have to go with him. His character is so interesting and amazing. From what he was like in the death t arc to the end of the series (or even dsod), it is such an amazing growth and shift. He doesn't become instantly "good." There's so many mixed emotions, him just really working through who he was and forging his own path towards the light. I just really love this character.
15. How did you get into YGO?
The first episode I ever watched was the dubbed episode "Evil Spirit of the Ring" when I was a kid and I was hooked. I stopped keeping up with it until I had a weird dream a few years ago about ygo and went, "huh, I used to love that show." I was curious if anything new was happening with it, found out that DSOD was coming out and got back into it and the Fandom. I absolutely love it and I'm glad I rediscovered it.
18. A random headcanon.
When at carnivals, Yugi always wins the prizes at all the games. He loves giving them to his friends, but if a carnival game has a scapegoat, he 100% goes for that one so he can give it to Jou. At this point, Jou is drowning in scapegoats but just can't tell Yugi to stop because of how excited he gets about it.
32. Favorite voice actor.
Oh! Either Eric Stuart or Wayne Grayson. I think Eric Stuart is hilarious, and I love that he has done extra stuff, but Wayne Grayson gave us Brooklyn Joey Wheeler.

Ashe and I were talking about putting Slater and Piper in other YGO series, and. I thought of reworking Numeron Code to include certain plots from every series pre-Zexal; Duel Monsters' Battle City + Virtual World arc, GX's setting in a school + the presence of a cult, 5Ds' world elements like the presence of speed duels, criminal marks, etc.
It still keeps the whole "number hunt" thing a plot point though, as well as the presence of D Gazers!
Here's the initial plot outline for reference!
Piper meets Slater in a similar way as in the original NC; Slater was a fan of his, and they became friends. In addition, Piper is an upcoming student at Liberty Garden's Duel Academy; while hes waiting for the new school semester to start, he decides to pad out his dueling record by partaking in tournaments
Slater is also an upcoming student in the duel academy- he chooses to attend Unova's branch instead of Hoenn's in hopes of spending more time with his brother.
They meet and befriend each other the same way as they did in the original NC. Piper is eventually recruited by Plasma, but one of his number hunts was a speed duel in Nimbasa City; Piper and his opponent go off-course, and Piper accidentally hits Slater, who was waiting for him in their waiting spot.
Piper is arrested while Slater is comatosed. Saddled with guilt, Piper agrees to being one of the many criminals handed over by the government to Colress' virtual world project. Ghetsis goes in the virtual world to monitor Piper's progress, as all the criminals handed over to Colress are all number holders.
Funding for the virtual world project is done through both Grimsley (who was told this would ensure his brother's recovery) and through The Herald's Guidance under Team Plasma; they promise to fund Colress' project not only for Ghetsis' interests, but also because Colress promises to hand over Slater once he gets what he wants; Zinzolin is convinced that Slater is the Diviner of The Herald as he shares their appearance and didn't immediately die during that accident.
Slater didn't immediately die due to being in possession of Number 7.
Upon being uploaded in the virtual world, Piper has no recollection over the accident- or of his and Slater's friendship. Similarly, Slater doesn't remember Piper.
Piper and the rest of the criminals wake up in one part of the virtual world, where a tournament is held between them, with the prize being their freedom; Ghetsis does not participate, but he stays in a castle, watching over Piper's progress and occasionally rigging the tournament by steering certain duelists to go after him.
Slater is kept in a separate part of the virtual world; in a tower surrounded by water. However, security measures are left unchecked, and Piper ends up climbing his tower and finding Slater. He immediately pieces together that Slater is the key to getting out, as he's not part of the tournament and is the only one there without the mark of a criminal. His possession of Number 7 is masked by Colress as to not make him a target amongst the other duelists.
The first part of this Numeron Code is basically a tournament arc, as its narrated immediately as soon as they're in the simulation; the reveal that Piper and Slater knew each other, as well as their reasons for being there, happens much later. Piper duels others for their numbers, erasing them from the tournament, while he aims to escape, initially only using Slater as a way to get out- before he grows fond of him, and eventually, remembers him and their friendship.
They have a little falling out near the end of the tournament when Slater finds out; hes not angry because of the accident, but angry because Piper found out and was trying to keep it from him. During this, Slater is captured and Piper has to battle the last few duelists (one of which is a speed duel), and eventually, Ghetsis. When Piper wins, this sends Ghetsis into a shock, and hes comatosed.
Piper gets out, but when he tries looking for Slater, he realizes Slater's pod isn't in the room. Colress escapes, Grimsley finds out about what he's been funding, and N and his sisters take Ghetsis to a hospital to recover; though N encourages Piper to try to live normally for now, while they look for the culprit and find Slater's body. Piper's involvement in the initial accident, as well as the simulation, is kept under wraps- the numbers he had collected are taken by N and his sisters for monitoring, but they promise to not hand them over to Ghetsis once he awakens.
Piper starts his first year in duel academy, trying to evade rumors, especially those that claimed he looks just like the duelist that was in an accident in Nimbasa City.
Piper is baffled, as he's placed in Slifer Red despite him excelling the entrance exam; he finds out later his score was swapped with someone else, an unknown duelist in Obelisk Blue- later revealed to be Slater, who is being touted as The Diviner of The Herald, and is influencing the students of the school.
Arc 2 of Numeron Code is reworked into being a school arc- the dueling academy is actually run by Zinzolin, still working under Ghetsis' orders, and utilizing the academy to expand the reach of The Herald's Guidance; Piper, like in regular Numeron Code, rebels from the inside and tries to rescue Slater, but also tries to keep whats going on a secret, in fear that Zinzolin may try to stifle his attempts otherwise.
The rest of the arc carry on as normal, with Zinzolin being the main antagonist of this arc; he attempts to escape with Slater, the school is set ablaze, and Duel Academy is exposed, with the rest of the school year being put on hold as investigations occur.
The rest of Numeron Code carries on as normaal with slight plot changes. Colress is still eventually the "final" boss of Numeron Code, having used the simulation and duel academy as a way to push Piper to his limits and achieving true strength. Slater is still put into The Hearld of Ultimateness' armor, and they still have their ceremonial duel at the end.

Regressor!Mai headcanons
for the person that asked for more ygo content c:
Doesn't like being around other people but especially doesn't like being around boys. She loses her sharp tongue when she's small so she's always worried they'll try something and she won't have a good comeback.
HOWEVER if she has someone she trusts there, she can tolerate it. She likes Tea because she can be just as sassy, and she knows Joey will protect her no matter what.
Joey's probably the only boy she tolerates, especially since he has a sister. He knows how to do the dolls and tea parties!
That being said, she gets along with Serenity very, very well. Serenity loves getting the chance to be the cool big sister, as well as sharing the things she loved to do when she was little.
Before KaibaCorp came out with actual Harpie Lady toys, Mai had a selection of Barbies custom-modified after the cards. They cost a bit but they look wonderful and they're still her favorites. The licensed action figures don't have brushable hair like her custom dolls do, and she only show them to people she thinks are trustworthy.
Absolutely loves having her hair brushed but doesn't trust many people to do it. People have been not-so-gentle with her hair in the past so it's something she's protective of. The first person she ever lets brush her hair is Tea.
One time the gang went to a carnival and there was a Harpie's Pet Dragon plushie as a game prize. She saw it and went instantly tiny, so Joey spent the rest of the evening and most of his money trying to win it for her. The way she smiled when it was in her arms made it all worth it, though.
She'd never admit it out loud but her absolute favorite thing in the world is when Joey gives her giant hugs. He picks her up and spins her in a circle and it's the best thing in the world. She's still embarrassed because the first time he did it she absolutely shrieked with joy.
Her favorite babytime shows are goofy reality show competitions. Sometimes she'll watch them just to relax and skim the surface of regressing, but not often.
After the events of Battle City, she gets really bad nightmares that have her waking up panicked and small. She put a scent patch on her stuffie because identifiable smells help ground her.

Oh i've got one for day 28
Here comes the next generation of f1 champions: max verstappen for redbull, charles leclerc for ferrari, and lando norris for mclaren. It's been a long and hard season, with them three always in a toght championship fight but they made it. And here they are now at the FIA prize giving gala. All in Formal Wear, Versace, Armani, and Gucci, that would all eventually end up on the floor.
Idc who wins just that it's them three at the top. And whoever you decide to win, maybe should be rewarded by the other two at the end of the night 😏
ooh would this fic actually give us the threeway championship battle we all hoped for in 2022 but never got? skdghds. and my god, prize giving galas. men in suits. max, lando, and charles fighting their lust and hunger.
winner getting spoiled by the other two? lots of praise kink? slight exhibitionism because maybe they can't entirely wait till they get home so mayybee there is a little playing around in a dark corner or a bathroom before the ygo home.
added to the list sweetie!
