How Two Millennials Went Viral - Griefcat
Griefcat: From the German word Kummerspeck or in English “grief bacon,”
the weight you gain from emotional eating or, in this case, the cat you get after a breakup.
  Annie Nardolilli: Singer, Songwriter, Guitar
Louisa Hall: Singer, Songwriter, Ukulele
What does a Mormon ex-sheriff and an Atheist tech employee have in common?  No, that’s not the beginning of an elaborate joke and Griefcat isn’t the punchline.  Instead, Annie Nardolilli and Louisa Hall, the masterminds behind Griefcat, are a duo that you can’t easily categorize or file into a neat little genre. They are mutually perpetuating forces in matching outfits who together create beautifully blended harmonies and brilliant lyrics, with an unpredictable twist.  They’ve been compared to Flight of the Conchords, Tenacious D, Norwegian duo Ylvis, and Garfunkel and Oates by fans, but if you ask Annie to describe their sound, she’ll say “We’re like if Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, and Bo Burnham met up at an Olive Garden and wrote a song while eating unlimited breadsticks. Does that make sense? Probably not.”
On their brilliant album Late Stage Capitalism, the nine tracks range from flat out hilarious to unexpectedly thought provoking, each with a unique sound and lyrics to tickle the soul.  An amalgamation of musical talent, these troubadours of the modern age display immense songwriting skills and infinite humor, with topical songs that not only dazzle but also make you smile and laugh while making fun of the world in which we live.  The musicianship stands out on its own too; traditional instruments abound but you will also hear slide guitar, ukulele, trumpet, trombone, violin, and cello peppered throughout the album.  The album explores how unbridled capitalism has invaded every facet of modern life, from workplace politics to interpersonal relationships, and even our most private moments.
They came up with the title in early 2020 when they wrote arguably their most well-known song on the album to date, “Revolution (Poop At Work)” which catapulted the duo to viral infamy and a strong following with over 25 million organic views of their videos, more than 15 million of those views for that song alone.  Even Questlove commented on the song, saying “LOL I feel seen, I see my version as a political act.”  They’ve also received likes from SZA and actor Alan Tudyk for their posts, among others.
“Revolution (Poop At Work)” is a song about how even the smallest acts of defiance can be revolutionary. “So much of the 2020s feel like the 1920s all over again - the income inequality is staggering, and the rich are getting richer while others are struggling,” says Louisa.  “Late stage capitalism is at the core of our entire album, but this is the song that most explicitly calls this out. We always tell audiences it’s our most cerebral song, then we dive into a 1.5 minute poop joke.  Life can be crappy, but it’s so much more fun to laugh your way through it!”
Other songs on the album include “I Just Want To Get Inside (Your Bank Account),” an unanticipated, ‘90s-style love song with a hilarious contradiction between two women looking for two different things when it comes to a new relationship.  Are they looking for love or money? It also shines a light on dating culture and how much sensitive personal information we share online every day.  “Crytpobro” is a traditional country tune with all the makings of a hit song.  It’s a melodic, catchy, and current, and a breakup song about losing love, in this case to the cult of Cryptocurrency and the church of Elon Musk.  The opening track, “Benevolent Billionaire,” featuring standout vocalist Jarreau Williams along with many of Washington, DC’s brightest musical talent, is loosely based on ‘80s supergroup charity singles like “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” and “We are the World.”  The song begins with Jarreau singing, “Tired of being broke, ‘cause of all of these rich people,” which is a thesis that applies to the entire record. “Love The Sinner” was written while Annie was working as a deputy sheriff and was inspired by two narrow-minded coworkers she didn’t get along with.  “One of our favorite details in the song occurs when we describe the colleague as having a ‘trash bag full of farts’ for a soul,” says Annie.  “Fun fact, you’ll hear a quick whooshing sound on the track of our drummer Ben Tufts whipping open a trash bag.” It’s one of two songs on the album that is based on true events, the other being “Hey There Girl,” a rapid fire duet skewering predatory MLM, boss babe, get-rich-quick-on-the-internet culture.
These songs would never have existed if it weren’t for the mind-melding of the opposites attract duo.  Annie, from Arlington, VA is a Mormon and former sheriff’s deputy while Louisa, from Alexandria, VA (now lives in Reston VA), is a long-time lapsed Catholic and a career tech employee.  That dichotomy in perspectives has been the key to the duo’s success both in songwriting and in their friendship.  They met at a DC-based variety show in 2015 and were the only musicians in a group of comedians performing that night. “Louisa played a song called ‘Barista Boyfriend,’ about a barista she had a crush on, and I played a song called ‘Hot Park Ranger’ about a park ranger I had a crush on,” says Annie.  “We both realized we liked hot people with jobs!”  They felt an immediate kinship.  After continually running into each other in the singer-songwriter scene in DC and admiring each other's work, they joked backstage at the 9:30 Club in 2018 about how they should form a band together. They scheduled their first rehearsal in 2019, and wrote a song about vaccines and egg rolls, and the rest is (recent) history.
Now, with Late Stage Capitalism, Griefcat has all the potential to be more than just a musical act.  With each live show, they invite their audience to step inside their world, creating a fun and exciting atmosphere that becomes a universally shared experience.  “We want to take away some of the seriousness of the day and help people remember that though life may be chaotic and nonsensical, it’s still good. Life is hard and it’s okay to laugh at it together,” says Annie.   But the greatest messages they receive are from fans who say their music provides a cathartic experience.  Says Louisa, “We’ve had folks reach out who couldn’t get out of bed due to grief, and they’ve found us, and it brought them enough joy to get out of bed that day.”  Ultimately they want people to enjoy the music, not just because it’s funny, but because it’s good – they want fans to feel it in their souls, to love the lyrics, and to have fun singing along.  People often tell them after a Griefcat show that they haven’t laughed that hard in a long time, and that’s a compliment that inspires Griefcat to keep making music every day.

Day 84
Today’s album: HAIM, Days Are Gone (2013)
A friend suggested I rewatch Ylvis’ moro i mørket videos last night, and it had been so long since I had watched their work that I did not hesitate to take her advice. As I mentioned the other night, I miss them so much, and rewatching the series did not disappoint. I laughed so much, and it was some much needed joy. All of which is to say that that suggestion took me down a bit of an ylvis youtube journey, and I remembered of the brilliance of Bård’s interpretative dance. That, in turn, reminded me of HAIM and their song Falling....whew...that was the longest explanation on how I got to this album.
Anyways, I absolutely loved this. I had forgotten how damn good they are. Their pop rock sounds some how manages to perfectly blend 80s synth pop with a jazz, blues, and a grunge rock sound, resulting in a coherent and unique sound that is just fun and so addictive. Falling, The Wire, My Song 5, and Running If You Call My Name were my favorites, but really I enjoyed every song on the album so much.

Ylvis with new TV program: - It might be absolutely terrible
BA, August 19th, 2020
The brothers are seriously getting to know each other in their new TV program. What that is going to be like, they are yet unsure of.
- We don’t really know anything about what this is going to be like yet. But we filmed the title sequence on Monday, and that will be good. So if nothing else, at least we know we have one good thing, Vegard Ylvisåker (41) says over the phone to BA.
Together with little brother Bård (38), Calle Hellevang-Larsen (43) and Magnus Devold (33), he will be on the TV screen this fall with “Ylvis på holmen med Calle og Magnus”.
- It’s the good gang, and we have a mission statement that is sitting down and figuring out what we think is fun. This time we wanted to do like so many others, and have a summer program with thick woolen sweaters, Bård, who is also on the line, says.
Have missed making TV
It has been four years since “I kveld med Ylvis”. Since then, the brothers from Bergen have done “Stories from Norway” and participated in the TV show “Kongen befaler”.
- We don’t necessarily miss being on TV in itself, but we think it’s fun to make TV, Bård says.
In the new TV program, which has several prerecorded segments, the four of them will be rotating the role of host. What happens in each episode, only the host knows.
- It might be absolutely terrible, Bård says, before manager Jørgen Thue cuts in on the call.
- No, no, it’s going to be very good!
Are going under each other’s skin
The series will be recorded in September, which is why they still are a bit unsure of what the whole thing is going be like.
Discovery writes the following about the program in the press release they sent out this week: “Ylvis på holmen med Calle og Magnus gives you all the humor, madness, music, slapstick and unpredictability that follow when Ylvis, Calle and Magnus do what they know best!”
- Is that right?
- Yes, I suppose so, if that’s what they write, Bård says.
- It’s going to be a program where we go under each other’s skin and really get to know each other. It’s the old gang getting together, Vegard says.
- Yes, because you don’t know each other all that well already?
- Vegard to me is a good colleague. I have another brother who I know well and love, but now I’m finally going to get to know Vegard too, Bård says.
As for whether it will be teary as well, the brothers don’t rule it out.
- We’re really going deep!
The premiere of the program will be in September.

Dream Journal 2020-04-07: Subpoena, The Musical!
Legal jargon time! For those who don’t know, a subpoena is a document that the government gives people or organizations that orders a person to attend court. And because spelling words is completely divorced from their actual pronunciation, “subpoena“ is pronounced “suh-PEEN-uh” because there is no god and all language is a construct designed to endlessly torture humanity. I know this is a weird way to start a dream journal, but the pronunciation of the word “subpoena” is relevant to this story.
So I’m wading through the firehose that is the internet in this dream. It is unclear if I am sitting at a computer using the internet or actually INSIDE the internet like a character from Wreck-It Ralph 2. Either way, I come across a video titled “Subpoena: The Musical.” And since I am precisely the kind of person internet marketers target for weird and esoteric content, I slap the play button to see what sort of legalese abomination I will be granted the chance to witness.
You would be forgiven for thinking that this video was about a legal document, or maybe a musical court case. This is not at all what the video is about. It was produced by two men who are best described as a Lebanese version of comedy duo Key and Peele. These guys looked exactly like Key and Peele, except they were of Lebanese descent. In the interest of brevity, they shall henceforth be known as LKP.
The music video starts in a dark void, but a light slowly reveals the silhouette of a statue. LKP appear in the shot and start chanting the word “subpoena” while they are riding to the top of a rollercoaster’s first big hill at night. Electronic dance music and neon lights burst out of the darkness. The cinematography reminds me a lot of the night-time forest bits of the music video for Ylvis’s “What Does The Fox Say,” which is why I included it as the header to this post.
Nary a legal document shows up in this video. Instead, LKP start saying only the “-poena” part of the word. Which is pronounced “peena.” And then the video just becomes a psychedelic turbo journey that features every penis (or “peena” in LKP’s parlance) that has ever appeared in famous works of art. All of this happens against a backdrop that looks like a green wormhole from the winamp music visualizer.
This is not a drill. There are marble dicks, painted dicks, block-print dicks, charcoal sketch dicks. More dicks than you can shake a dick at. And yet, I end up watching the whole thing. But hey, at least the music was good.

2013: The Unbearable Whiteness of Being Macklemore
Song of the year: “Gangnam Style” PSY. I unironically love this and always have. I love PSY. I scoured multiple English translations of the lyrics to try to find anything meaningful, but there wasn’t much there, other than this gem: “A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles. That kind of guy.”
Song of the year at the time that we all put fully out of our minds until just now: “Thrift Shop” Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Wanz. It’s pure, uncut, delightful white nonsense. 2013 was a good year to be white, although in fairness, we had a very long string of good years.
If you’re white and/or you like to celebrate the oeuvre of white people music you’re in luck, because in 2013 you can dig into the Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, Lorde, Maroon 5, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Imagine Dragons, Ed Sheeran, Justins Timberlake AND Bieber, not to mention all the country music I’m going to dismiss at the end of this article!
“Love Me” Lil Wayne, Drake, Future/ “Girl on Fire” Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj. A category of songs on my mind these days is “possible silks routine songs.” I suggested one of these two songs to Amy as such, but due to a misunderstanding she thought I meant the other. Now I’m obsessed with the other one as my silks routine music. Watch out, Morgan! (Morgan is my extremely patient aerial silks teacher.)
“Harlem Shake” Baauer. The Harlem Shake viral videos seem, in hindsight, very 2020. Just get everybody in a mask and we can do this trend again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8f7wj_RcqYk My other comment here is that in 2016, Baauer played a much-hyped show at my university, then refused to play the Harlem Shake.
“Pour it Up”, “Diamonds”, “Stay” Rihanna, all off of the album Unapologetic. It’s always a good year to listen to Rihanna, or look at pictures of Rihanna, or think about Rihanna during whatever else you were supposed to be doing!
“I Love It” Icona Pop, Charli XCX. This one is on the spin-bike playlist, so it’s more timeless for me rather than rooted specifically in 2013.
“Get Lucky” Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers. Pharrell can make any song amazing. He took the poorly-organized string of bad ideas that was “Blurred Lines” and turned it into something you’ll hate yourself for nodding along to.
“Started from the Bottom” Drake. Another love letter to music production, which took monotone, nothingburger rap by Drake and turned it into gold.
“The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” Ylvis. Why do I love Gangnam Style, but this does less than nothing for me? Thanks, I hate it.
Country music barometer for 2013: 14%. Insert generalized dismay about this amount of country music appearing in any place or time.
