Today I played Phenomeno made by nitro plus. It's a very short visual novel (took me an hour and 40 minutes). Doesn't have any choices other than the one at the beginning of the game which isn't really a choice since one of them just leads to the game shutting down immediately and I wish they'd use that choice a bit more. The first thing you're asked in game is whether you want to know the truth and at the end you see this question again which I thought would play out differently if you chose not to learn the truth at the beginning, instead of closing the game they could've let you play the game normally only changing the end and not letting you learn the truth from Yoishi.

Besides that I think the game is pretty solid for what it is and does everything it wanted to do. The story despite being only an adaptation of chapter one of volume one from a six volume novel is pretty conclusive and the ending feels more or less complete. The horror aspects were definitely one of its stronger points. Despite there being more relaxed moments that let you take a breath the game keeps you alert most of the time. As much as it probably wont scare most, the perfectly time soundtrack made me feel unease more than once especially throughout the second part of the game. The story was short, captivating and intriguing even if predictible at times. Characters don't stand out much but they work for this kind of game and some of them are probably more touched upon in the novel. One thing I appreciate the most is probably the atmosphere. Vague and dark backgrounds, the lack of voice acting, and the soundtrack than only enhances it all not only with music but other sounds as well. Since it's not that long and the game interested me enough I'll be definitely picking up the novel sometime in the future which I hope to make a post about as well. If you're a fan of horror VNs or nitro plus or for some other reason you've wanted to give this game a try I recommend you do, even if it's not the greatest piece of fiction out there it was well written and enjoyable.

Another short nitro plus game I played fairly recently (beginning of July) was Saya no uta, one of the most popular of their works. I'm surprised it took me so long to play it and despite it being so highly rated even by people I know I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did.

I usually prefer longer games since they have more time to develop and expand the story, characters and other aspects and I wouldn't expect something so short to be a masterpiece. One of the things I was surprised the most about were the three endings. I'm most critical about those since it's the last thing you'll see in game and creating a perfectly satisfying ending that makes sense is much harder than coming up with an interesting story. All three endings of saya are amazing. I still don't know which one I prefer the most. Every ending is vastly different yet they're all satisfying in their own way. None of the characters feel out of character and what happens in them isn't abstract from the game and feels like that's something that would happend if it goes certain ways. Despite that they weren't predictable. Again the atmosphere is something I greatly appreciate about this game. It's certainly an experience I'll think about for a long time, despite its short length it managed to earn the title of the best visual novel I read. Not my favorite because it didn't speak to me on a deeper personal level but it's certainly the greatest thing I've played in years.

Not to sound like a huge nerd or anything, but I'm like 110% sure the illustrations for the game For the Frog The Bells Tolls were illustrated by Yoishi Kotabe. He is the dude who also made the illustrations for games like Super Mario world, and, A Link to the Past (the original ones make for the SNES booklet, not the most recent redraws made by another artist for the GBA release)

Thing is, he was not credited as the illustrator in the credits for Super Mario World, they just put his name in the "special thanks to" section.

Same for For The Frog the Bells Tolls, in the staff roll, they just put his name under the "thank you" part lol.

I love the dude 's art I could recognize his art from 1000 miles away

(why was he not credited as the actual illustrator though? to me, it's a pretty important part ...I don't get it...)

I just wanted to share ...because it seem people online are thinking that the name put under the "character designer" is the illustrator. It's not the same thing
