A high speed sync mode is available when a flash is connected via the PC sync port and will help in bright lighting conditions and for stopping motion with a maximum speed of 1/8000 second. Multiple sync modes are available for more specific needs or effects, including 1st and 2nd curtain sync. On the device is also an AF assist beam to help in low-light conditions. The YN-622C utilizes a series of LEDs to display settings and allow users to make adjustments. And, it can utilize 7 channels and 3 groups for setting up multiple flash units easily and efficiently.

Additionally, there are both TTL and manual flash modes available for full creative control. When connected to a strobe, a Super Sync function will allow photographers to achieve a faster sync speed than generally possible with their camera. Dead silence pervades the room. Zeng Yongnuo’s hands over the sheets of paper won’t stop shaking.

“While the other one was written by ‘Duan Ling’,” Duan Ling says. “I’m sure everyone here is quite aware of what the name ‘Duan Ling’ signifies.”

At the time of Cai Yan’s arrival in Xichuan, he had indeed told the officials that his name was ‘Duan Ling’ while living with the Duans. However, the handwriting on the exam paper clearly did not come from the same hand. In other words, judging by the handwriting, ‘Duan Ling’ isn’t the present crown prince, but someone else.

“This evidence …” Su Fa says in a trembling voice.

“And now, you all know.” Duan Ling takes a seat nearby, and says solemnly, “When Han Bin starts the assembly in a little while, he will bring this up. I’m sure you’ve already come to a decision as to what position to take when the time comes.”

“Great Chen is in great peril!” Tears pour down Su Fa’s wrinkled face all of a sudden, and his lips tremble incessantly. After observing him, Duan Ling comes to the conclusion that Su Fa may have been holding on to a very last shred of hope that he could help Cai Yan resist Han Bin.

But since Cai Yan is an imposter, it is all over. The final outcome has to be Han Bin as regent, with the empress dowager governing the imperial court.

“What are we to do?” Zeng Yongnuo says.

Everyone is very tired. Su Fa says, “If the empress dowager gives birth to a son, Great Chen will at least have a successor.”

“But even if she gives birth to a princess, so what?” Duan Ling says. "The key is whether the child in the empress dowager’s belly is His Majesty’s. As long as she’s a Li, what’s wrong with helping her become a female emperor?

“At the very least,” Duan Ling smiles before continuing, “the late emperor and His Majesty both gave so much for this empire. Fifth Princess is still alive, and if we ask her to come back to manage the government, it would not necessarily mean we would be throwing all of the ancestors’ hard work away.”

Just then, a bell rings in the distance, dong … dong … dong … — three times.

“My lords, you may go ahead and weigh those pros and cons on your own.” Duan Ling takes a half-step backwards. “It’s time to attend the assembly. Please.”

Soldiers of the Northern Command enter, letting the civil officials know that it is time to go to assembly.

Duan Ling and Wu Du stand at the end of the line. Their eyes meet.

“I …” Wu Du swallows back the words on the tip of his tongue.

“Go on,” Duan Ling whispers. “Remember to come back. Nothing is going to happen to me.”

Wu Du gazes into Duan Ling’s eyes, and after a long while, he lowers his head and presses a kiss on top of Duan Ling’s head. Then, he dashes out of the window at the back of the palace hall.

A stripe of fishbelly white appears on the horizon. The Northern Command troops step forward to escort the officials through the forum in front of the palace, where they take the stairs up to the throne room for the assembly.

Duan Ling follows the other officials at the very end of the line. The Northern Command is only checking whether anyone brought weapons and not who they are; there are too many officials at court after all, and soldiers newly arrived from the northwest can’t tell who’s who. Duan Ling just gives them some random name and fools them easily.

Outside the throne room, the sun had just risen. A eunuch hits the gong, clears his throat, and loudly announces, “His Highness the crown prince graces us with his presence — the empress dowager has arrived — General Han has arrived — Chancellor Mu has arrived —”

The officials look around at each other, and a solemn silence fills the hall. They don’t see Mu Jinzhi. Not a moment passes before Cai Yan comes into the throne room with Lang Junxia, and as he walks onto the steps behind the screen, he stumbles and almost falls over. Lang Junxia reaches out just in time and steadies him with his strong arms.

Han Bin enters, then Mu Kuangda, supported by a Northern Command bodyguard, with Huan Jian and Fei Hongde following. Each takes his seat.

“The reason I gathered everyone here today,” Han Bin says, “is because there is something that needs to be made known to the world.”

The room is very quiet. Han Bin’s eyes sweep over the officials to find everyone looking quite expectant, as though they already guessed what Han Bin is about to say.

“This crown prince is an imposter,” Han Bin says, enunciating his words heavily so that each syllable hits the palace floor with weight. “You’ve all been fooled.”

Han Bin had thought the officials would whisper among themselves once he tells them this, yet nobody seems moved; on the contrary, they all look up at the crown prince in the seat next to the throne. Cai Yan is taking deep breaths, his entire body trembling. This day has finally come.

Han Bin says, "When Ögedei took Shangjing, the late emperor rushed to its rescue with troops, and on the night the city fell, the boy who was ‘Duan Ling’ got separated from this man who’s sitting in the crown prince’s seat, and was thus stranded. This man was once a fellow student of the crown prince, and under Wuluohou Mu’s designs, he’d travelled to Xichuan to take the crown prince’s place under false pretences!

“You don’t believe me? You can ask him yourself!” Han Bin points at Lang Junxia and Cai Yan by the throne.

Though he has no idea why Lang Junxia is here, Han Bin is already sure he has victory in his grasp.

Suddenly, every eye in the room is on Cai Yan.

He’s still up there, looking down at the officials, and everyone’s eyes are staring at him.

“I … didn’t,” Cai Yan says quietly, “I didn’t … I didn’t!”

“I am Li Rong!” Cai Yan flies into a rage, saying suddenly, “Han Bin! You’re making all of this up! Lies and slander! You killed my dad! And now that my uncle is dead, you’re taking this opportunity to usurp the Li throne!”

Han Bin says, “Why you …”

Of all possibilities, Han Bin never anticipated for Cai Yan to suddenly retract his confession, and he finds himself momentarily on the back foot.

“I am Duan Ling!” Cai Yan says. “This is something the court officials verified long ago, and both Chancellor Mu and General Xie ascertained my identity also! Han Bin! What on earth are you scheming?! Provide your witnesses and evidence!”

Han Bin sneers, “First Wuluohou Mu tried to assassinate Chancellor Mu, then he killed Qian Qi, the only person who could have disproved your identity, so now there are no witnesses left. Cai Yan, you already admitted it in your own words, but now you’re retracting that confession. Is it because you think I can’t do anything to prove you’re lying?” He turns to call out to an underling, “Summon the envoys of Liao, Yuan, Xiliang, and Tuyuhun to this hall!”

“I have evidence,” Zeng Yongnuo suddenly says.

Cai Yan is astounded by this abrupt development. Zeng Yongnuo takes out the two exam papers Duan Ling gave him earlier. Even Mu Kuangda is staggering to his feet.

“Before today’s assembly, everyone already saw them,” Zeng Yongnuo says. “These are exam papers written by Duan Ling and Cai Wen’s brother, Cai Yan, when they were in Shangjing. The papers are stamped with their seals as proof.”

Zeng Yongnuo shows everyone the exam papers. Can Yan goes pale at the sight of them.

“We only need to check them against the crown prince’s handwriting, and the difference will be clear,” Zeng Yongnuo says. “Even though the Secretariariat and the Censorate are already familiar with the crown prince’s handwriting, we should still get some of the memorials and check these against them.”

“The envoys will now enter the hall —!” A eunuch singsongs.

Outside the throne room, envoys from the four nations gather. Batu, Helian Bo, Yelü Lu and Tenzin Wangyal come into the room. The officials part to let them through.

As Tenzin Wangyal walks by behind Duan Ling, he hands Duan Ling an item. Duan Ling thus puts it in his sleeve without showing any sign that this happened.

Han Bin says, “I’ve been told that the crown prince used to attend school with two of these envoys. Do you remember them, Your Highness?”

Cai Yan says shakily, “Borjigin … Batu. Helian Bo.”

“Cai Dog, you still remember me? What a surprise.” Batu laughs. “Never mind. Looks like you won’t soon forget me. Why don’t you come down here and we’ll wrestle for a bit of sport? Since you wanted to pass yourself off as Duan Ling, I’m sure you know that Helian Bo used to be Duan Ling’s wrestling teacher. Show us a few moves?”

Cai Yan could never have expected that Batu would ask him to wrestle.

“Since you say your dad is Li Jianhong, well then, it was the Chen emperor and Duan Ling who helped my father and me leave Shangjing that one night. The first time a diplomatic delegation from Yuan visited Chen, a lot of officials here heard the story, and you nodded to confirm it too didn’t you?”

After Cai Yan went to Xichuan, a Mongolian delegation did indeed come to visit. They’d also mentioned how Li Jianhong and Duan Ling helped Jochi and Batu escape from Shangjing, how that’d saved their lives. Cai Yan had no idea about this at the time, so he could only nod.

“I do indeed remember this being said,” Mu Kuangda says.

Su Fa says, “I was present at the time as well, and the crown prince himself acknowledged it. Lord Cheng and Lord Wang here can also corroborate this.”

“Do you still remember?” Batu asks.

Cai Yan stares at Batu, momentarily unsure whether he should nod or shake his head. He stares at Lang Junxia like he’s crying for help.

“Of course he remembers,” Lang Junxia says lightly.

Batu says, “When we parted, what was the item I gave you as a token of our friendship?”

Cai Yan says, “A dagger.”

“When Amga asked you to show him the dagger, what did you say then?” Batu asks, “You said you lost it, didn’t you?”

“Wuluohou Mu found it for me. It’s in the Eastern Palace.”

“Why don’t you send someone to get it and show us?” Batu paces in the room before adding, “On the night before we said goodbye, where did you and I meet?”

This is no longer a question Cai Yan can answer, and he decides to throw caution to the wind, saying, “you’re Mongolian, I’m Han, and no matter what I say you’ll tell me I’m wrong. My dad is already dead, and your dad is no longer around also, so it’s not like there are witnesses!”

And now, the scribe had already found Cai Yan’s handwriting, and having placed the exam papers and his handwriting side by side on a tray, he is going around showing them to the officials. The writing on them is identical.

“Your handwriting betrayed you,” Batu says. “Your name was Cai Yan in Shangjing, not Duan Ling. You’re a child of the Cai family. You have a blood feud with Southern Chen since they killed your entire family!”

Behind Mu Kuangda, Fei Hongde nods. “Back then, His Majesty had used that very scheme proposed by myself to sow dissension, pushing your family into dire straits. I never thought that one ill misstep on my part would end up bearing such bitter fruit. But is it worth it to go through all this trouble for revenge?”

Gasping for breath, Cai Yan looks to Lang Junxia hoping he would say something. But instead, Lang Junxia offers of his own accord, “It’s true. There’s no need to search for a token of friendship. I am responsible for all of it.”

The officials are instantly in an uproar. Even Cai Yan never imagined that Lang Junxia would confess to it so smoothly, without a hint of denial.

“You … Lang Junxia!” Cai Yan snarls at him, “Don’t you remember what you promised me!?”

Han Bin lets out a belly laugh. “Interesting. Looks like you’re not the only one who’s overturning his confession today! So, what else have you got to say?”

“Why you … Wuluohou Mu!” Su Fa says angrily, “You pulled the wool over the eyes of the imperial court for so many years, even daring to fool the now-dead His Majesty, to lie to the late emperor’s soul up above! Wuluohou Mu! What do you take the people of this land for?! What do you take Great Chen for?!”

“My Lords,” Lang Junxia says earnestly, “years ago, you and the Mongols killed my people and burned my villages; through years of war between Chen and Yuan, the Wuluohou Empire was razed, turned into a wasteland. The Cai family was killed by your dark schemes of dissension. Gentlemen, as a matter of fact, we did indeed come for vengeance.”

Suddenly, the court officials go so quiet that one can hear a pin drop. Lang Junxia continues, “Back when Yuan and Chen were at war, the people who died in your hands were merely a few lines in your memorials and battle dispatches stating thousands, or tens of thousands. But to me, all of those people were my people. My relatives. Is this so difficult to apprehend?”

The corner of Lang Junxia’s mouth turns up ever so slightly, as his words convey the bitter, awful truth, yet there is tenderness in his eyes as he adds, "Entrusted by the late emperor, I found Duan Ling in Runan, raised him for five years, and watched over him as he grew up. Then when the late emperor returned, I travelled south on his orders and placed myself under Zhao Kui’s command.

“Soon, the late emperor borrowed troops from Liao and headed south. Zhao Kui ordered me to take the crown prince as a hostage. But not long after that, Xichuan was recovered by the late emperor.” Lang Junxia says slowly, "Then Shangjing fell, the crown prince was lost, and I had no idea if he was still alive. I promised Cai Yan that I would make him the crown prince, and he promised to seek vengeance for me.

“Everyone in this room,” Lang Junxia says, looking around at the people in the throne room, “has a blood feud with me, and with him. We were going to settle the score with each and every one of you sooner or later. But this time, I lost. Since this was a gamble with everyone, a gamble with the world, then if I lose, I ought to concede.”

“Then where’s the real crown prince?” Zeng Yongnuo says, “Where is he right now?”

Mu Kuangda says, “I’m sure he’s been lost in the wars and become a ghost wandering the wilderness by now.”

“No,” Lang Junxia says. “He’s still alive. Also, he’s right here in this room.”

This causes quite a stir among the officials; here is something no one had anticipated — the crown prince is still alive?!

Han Bin looks livid. When he hears these words, his gaze sweeps quickly over the officials, and just as he’s been told, he finds Duan Ling standing behind the very last row of officials!

And it is at that very moment that a messenger from the Northern Command runs into the room.

The messenger announces his presence, then in a great panic he shouts, “The outer city troops have taken the north gate!”

Han Bin stands up with a start. But Duan Ling has begun to speak, “Are you very surprised? General Han?”

“You …” Han Bin is shocked. He shouts, “Seize him!”

“Who would dare seize me?!” Duan Ling says, “Take a good look at what I’m holding!”

An item is revealed in Duan Ling’s hand, turning out to everyone’s surprise to be the luminous jade arc, a glow suffusing it seemingly from within. Everyone is stunned.

“When you’re in the presence of this token you’re in the presence of His Majesty.” Duan Ling says to the officials, “Great Chen’s jade arc of the realm — no, the jade arc of the central plains Han people. Did everyone get a good look?”

“Duan Ling … Duan Ling …” Cai Yan shakes all over.

The court officials are beyond stunned as they stare at Duan Ling in a daze. Duan Ling doesn’t show a hint of fear as he faces a wall of Northern Command soldiers. The soldiers step forward to surround Duan Ling with weapons in hand.

“Who dare touch him!” Batu bellows furiously, and the envoys of the four nations back up to stand in front of Duan Ling.

“General Han,” Duan Ling says, “would you rather hurry and get out there so that you can command your troops, or would you rather stay here in the throne room and listen to the whole story?”

Han Bin is so angry that he starts laughing. “Sure, I’d love to hear what you’d like to say. Muster the troops, hold the city!”
