Update
Hello everyone, sorry for being inactive. I have completed my year abroad, but will still be answering any questions for those who find this blog. Please feel free to ask me anything, I will try to help with my best knowledge. Ask about anything, my experience, the good and bad about South Korea, the culture, school, people, anything. A lot happened, good and bad, and I would love to share my experiences with you and answer any questions. I might be sharing some experiences randomly with some tips as well.

10. Last Days in Korea, June 2015
My last of the Korea Study Abroad posts! I enjoyed every moment of my year abroad and still hold those memories close to me. If I were to give anyone advice on studying abroad, I’d say to just go for it, no matter what it takes. Doubts about finances and being “away” from home can surely make the decision difficult, but there are definitely ways around it.
On to the blog.......
Tumblr media
One of the most iconic places in Seoul is the DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza). It hosts Seoul Fashion Week annually and is an all-around fun place to walk around and hang out. I met up with my friends here to explore the area and burn off our dinners, while catching up about our lives (they live in Korea but we met in Hong Kong).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taken at Mecenatpolis in Seoul.
Tumblr media
Cool chicken/ octopus dish in Hongdae.
Tumblr media
Taken on Yonsei’s campus at one of the most iconic buildings of the school.
Tumblr media
More food!
Tumblr media
Another bucket list item! Jjimjilbangs are Korean spas where you can go into heated rooms, bathe, eat foods, and drink healthy drinks. My friend and I each got a shikhye, which is most closely described as a sweet rice drink.
Tumblr media
Me, in a really hot sauna that my friend ranked “comfortable”, but I, a “literal oven”.
Tumblr media
It is also common to eat roasted potatoes at the Jjimjilbang. A kind man gave my friend and I each a potato because we “looked kind” and “spoke English very well”. I’ll take it I guess lol.
Tumblr media
I made it a goal to go somewhere everyday after class, as my time was limited. One of the most fun places I got to visit was the Trick Eye Museum in Hongdae. Lots of fun photo-ops and an overall great way to spend some time with friends.
Tumblr media
My last meal in Korea :(
That’s it for the Korea series. I’ve been back a few times since, for travel, and will document that at a later time. Denk u for reading!

#3 Pre-Departure Orientation
Hello everyone,
Once again, I am so sorry this took so long. I was planning on uploading this last week, but decided not to because something tragic happened in Korea and the Kpop industry. When it starts to get closer to when I leave to South Korea, I will probably set a day during the week where I would post something. In this way, you could look forward to my post that one day during the week instead of getting surprise post, like this one.
Nonetheless, to get started, I would like to first clarify that this orientation is based on my home university and my own experience, likewise, with all post that I will be uploading here.
The orientation was mandatory and was split into a general session and country specific session. I was first handed a folder with my name and host university I will be attending. Inside the folder were papers about cultural adjustment, cultural thoughts, what to know before going, international perspectives on U.S. Americans, tips for Americans traveling abroad, and advice for parents. There were also papers specifically on the country that I am visiting, such as health information for travelers to South Korea and embassy messages (such as information to help guide you on what to do if you lose your passport or witness a crime).
I first attended the general session, which took a little longer than an hour. The general session was simple and straightforward. Main points they hit were on cultural adjustment, food, health, and safety. As you learn more about studying abroad, you will hear these topics often. As a student studying abroad alone at a new location, students could often undergo cultural shock, in which people feel that the “new” culture is weird to them causing mental distress and dysfunction. They gave us tips on how overcome this shock, simply by informing us that it is normal and that there are others to help us, such as our advisors and so on. They also gave us tips on certain foods to avoid, which include fruits, vegetables, and uncooked foods. The most common way people get ill from foods is most likely from fruits and vegetables (salads) that are washed with unclean water. The best way to avoid food poisoning would be to eat hot foods. Then, they talked about our health and safety. Included was health insurance that varies on the study abroad program you are under. They basically told us not to do something out of the ordinary where we will be getting hurt, causing or getting in trouble. We should avoid any political events and irrational activities that can lead to trouble. If we do cause trouble in the country we are studying at, they have the right to ask us to go back to where we came from. That was basically it for the general session, like I said, it was pretty simple and most of the things I heard, you will probably hear repeatedly as you continue your process into studying abroad.
After the general session, I went to the country specific session, in this case the session on South Korea. It was held by my study abroad advisor and there were only two others with me, both were going to Sogang University. My advisor basically talked about the same things that were said in the general session. She also then added about getting a Visa, which can be done via mail or in person at the Korean Embassy (I will write a post on what I will be doing later once I have completed that process). She then talked about the people in Korea based on her experience. She said that they are extremely friendly; however, they do tend to get in your face asking questions that we Americans do not typically ask. For example, she said how Koreans would look at her mole on her chin and ask what it was called (lol). Another question Koreans often asked was “Why did you vote for Trump?” or political questions in general. The session was nothing out of the ordinary. After my advisors quick PowerPoint presentation, she brought out three students, one female who use to lives in Korea, but has been living in America for the past 2 years, another female who studies at Ewha Womans University but was studying abroad at NAU for fall semester, and another who studies at Sogang University and was also studying abroad at NAU for fall. The two other girls studying abroad at South Korea and I started casually asking questions. We asked if there were any places to visit. They said we should go visit Busan for its beaches and party life. They also said that Hongdae and Itaewon would probably be the best places to visit in general as we go outside of school since they are extremely close to Ewha and Sogang University. We then asked about fashion in Korea, since Americans tend to dress more simple and lazy if we just go to class. The lady that goes to Ewha Womans University said that the women there do not care about what others wear and that it is common to find others in simple clothing as well. However, if we were to go outside of the school, it would be different. Then I asked them about the difficulties in classes. They said that classes are not that much harder. The main difference is that professors are extremely lecture based and do not reach out to the students unless the student reaches out to them outside of class. They also pointed out how professors do not make the classes hard, but the other classmates themselves do. In other words, it is the other classmates that make it seem hard since Korean students tend to study a lot, it makes other students feel the need to also study more.
That was basically it for the pre-departure orientation. It was extremely informative and reassuring. If you are studying abroad, your university may also provide the pre-departure orientation, I advice you all to take advantage of all the information given. The information does get repeatitive, however, they want to assure you and prepare you for what will be coming up as you study abroad.
I hope this information was helpful. I apologize again for the delay. If you have any questions, feel free to message me!
Thank you,
C.
