finally got around to watching ep6 and i am FASCINATED by how well it demonstrates yor and loid's differing talents and priorities. yor is extremely good at using ingenuity to kill/incapacitate threats on sight (especially in a discreet manner), and yet she isn't actually able to identify other assassins, nor is she wary of listening devices at all. then you cut to loid and realize that he's already clocked all the listening devices and suspicious characters all around the boat, and the only reason he hasn't taken care of them or investigated is simply because he doesn't think they're a threat to him (which is reasonable - his presence on the cruise was last minute, all the listening devices seem to be indiscriminate, and none of the suspicious people have paid any attention to loid since he got on the boat).
i think the fact that yor recognizes "bloodlust" and loid recognizes "suspicious activity" really highlights how different their training is: yor needs to be on guard against people who want to kill her, while loid's job as a spy requires him to catch small details that expose other spies. they both notice the threats in different ways, and had loid and yor been working together to protect olka and her son, they would have covered each other's blind spots beautifully - loid would've immediately spotted threats like the assassins in the crowded room, leaving yor to deal with them quickly and quietly. i'm looking forward to seeing what a power couple they are once all the secrets are out and they can finally work as a team.

So watching the newest Spy x Family, I see everyone squealing over Uncle Franky (don’t get me wrong I am too) but I also think his outsider’s perspective is kind of sad. When Anya is waiting for Yor and Loid to get home, the line he says there struck me.
“Hey, do you like your mom and dad?”
Like that’s a weird question to ask a young child who, hopefully, should love their parents. But Franky I think is acutely aware that they aren’t Anya’s real parents and the Forger family is fake. Franky has worked with Twilight for years, knows him very well and has presumably seen him make and drop identities like one would an article of clothes. We’ve even had Franky directly accusing Loid of being too clinical, focusing only the mission. I think Franky believes that once Operation Strix is completed, that he’ll leave and Anya and move on to the next assignment.
I think that idea has colored a lot of Franky’s interactions with Anya. Yes, he’s also a big kid and wants to run around and be silly. But I also believe he’s trying to give this girl a sense of happiness and family presumably before she’s dropped off at the nearest orphanage once her usefulness is outlived. Like we all know Loid is catching feels but he’s a Good Actor and it might not be readily apparent to his coworker. Idk it must be so sad for Franky to watch this little family interact, to sweep up a child so clearly desperate for love and family in a spy operation, only to realize it won’t last.

“Twilight’s gonna go ballistic!”
While certainly he would/will if he gets wind of this before it’s over, I think this is more likely gonna end with [redacted] crying after everything is settled.
I mean, this has gotta hit every trigger button he has.

Can’t wait until we get to the point where Loid and Yor can get annoyed with each other without immediately worrying that their spouse is going to LEAVE THEM FOREVER
It’s absolutely delightful how much those two are on the same wavelength but part of loving someone unconditionally is that as irritated as you can get with them you never doubt the foundation of the relationship. You love them, they love you. Neither questions this and that means you don’t fear conflict or disagreement. People get sick of each other sometimes and that’s ok.
There’s comfort in knowing you’re loved beyond the good times, confidence in being loved at your messiest.

I know there are several other threads about Melinda Desmond, but hear me out.
.
.
.
Did anyone else get a Chapter 37 flashbacks?
There is clearly some recall in chapter 65 to Ch. 37, though it's as if we are following Desmond rather than Twilight. The way that Melinda purposely avoids saying her name until the last panel (and no one calls her by anything identifiable save for the butler who calls her Ma'am). While this is obviously done for dramatic effect on Endo-sensei's part, from a story standpoint, it's kinda odd.
My theory is that Melinda knew EXACTLY who Yor was the moment they met. For what purpose, I cannot begin to fathom. But if that is the case, I'm not sure how I feel about this budding friendship.

I don’t think I’m going to find love and get married. I think I’m going to be in my mid 30s and I’m going to meet a tired, widowed man who’s got a little bit of a tummy and is well off, and I’m going to get along with his daughter and eventually we will look at each other and think “this might as well happen” and then we’ll get married.

After what seems like a long time, we finally have a full "Forgers bonding" chapter, in a new location as well 😁
Tumblr media
Even though the focus of the chapter was the murder mystery (heavily inspired by Detective Conan) and it didn't have a serious tone (just look at the names of the guest characters! 🤣) there were actually quite a lot of Twiyor tidbits scattered throughout, and I'm here to slurp them up!
Firstly is Twilight trying his best to make sure Yor and Anya are safe with their amateur skiing skills.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And as usual, overlooking anything abnormal that Yor does 😅
Tumblr media
When they get to the lodge, he considers her feelings about sharing a room.
Tumblr media
Even though she says she'll put up with it, he knows it makes her uncomfortable, so he volunteers to sleep on the sofa so she and Anya can have their own beds. Of course, just the thought of sharing a room with Loid is too much for Yor to handle 😅
Tumblr media
Twilight starts to wonder when she doesn't come back for a while.
Tumblr media
He's obviously happy when she returns - in the Japanese version, he even says おかえり(welcome back/home).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he sees there's foul play going on, he immediately wants Yor and Anya out of danger (he also trusts that Yor will keep Anya safe).
Tumblr media
Despite Yor being the only one without an alibi, he doesn't show any suspicion (even after hearing her "probably" slip up!)
Tumblr media
And lastly, when the others start accusing Yor, he defends her. This scene reminded me a lot of the scene way back during the Eden interview where Swan started putting her down and he stuck up for her without any second-guessing. Even though Twilight gave a lot of fake smiles throughout this chapter, the mix of determination and anger in his expression on the below page is not fake - it's a true look of "I will definitely find the culprit (so no one should accuse my wife!)"
Tumblr media
I guess my only nitpick about the chapter is that I wanted it to go on longer, mostly for more Forger interactions (and Loid/Yor reactions when sharing the same room, lol). I thought it would last at least another chapter where we'd see exactly how the mystery was solved. But I guess the joke is that the Forgers are the most OP crime solving team without even knowing it, so no culprit can get away from them for too long! Between Loid's intelligence, Anya's mind reading, Bond's visions, and (though it didn't come into play here) Yor's super strength, they'd be able to solve murder mysteries and apprehend criminals before the police could even file a report! 😂
A couple final comments, I like that Twilight decided to trust Anya's intuition in the end, despite not seeming that way at first (and did she seriously bring the detective outfit with her on the trip?😆) And just like with Yor, no questions about this peculiarity with Anya - no wondering why she knew the time and place of the next murder...what's that expression, "love is blind"? 😅
Tumblr media
And Yor always ready to protect Anya ❤️(also looks like she's having some alcohol while Loid isn't...guess she needed something to calm her nerves at the thought of sharing a room with him!)
Tumblr media
Endo is going to take a break, so next new chapter won't be until February 19th. Have a nice break, Endo-sensei!

"No cocoa for you, Bond," Loid chided the eager dog. "Cocoa is poisonous for dogs like you. Why don't I get you some milk instead?"
Seeing Loid about to get up, Yor quickly leapt to her feet. "Oh, Loid, let me get that for you."
"No, I can handle that much," Loid insisted. "Please, sit down and relax."
"No, you're the one who should be relaxing. You always work so hard!"
Ultimately, the doting wife and doting husband (of an entirely fake marriage) went into the kitchen together, with Bond plodding after them.

Fake Twiyor vs Real Twiyor Moment
Remember that theory about Twiyor having a fake moment and a real moment? If you don't, you can read it here.
Now, let's add another one! This one is fairly recent. Here's the fake moment:
Tumblr media
Remember, at this moment in the story, fake Twiyor moment is exciting. While true Twiyor moment is quiet, calm, but very real.
Do you want to guess which is the real Twiyor moment? Yeah, I bet you know it 😄 This one is pretty big! It even has two parts, one Yor, the other one Twilight. Here it is:
Tumblr media
Here, Yor tells Twilight she wants to take care of him!!! Can you imagine this super spy who relies on no one, who's been taking care of himself since he was a little boy hearing someone wants to take care of him???
Yor also tells him that she's strong enough to handle hard times and he doesn't need to protect her. And to top it all, she tells him he doesn't have to be perfect, that he actually makes her happy when he's imperfect, vulnerable and asks for her help.
Tumblr media
It went straight to his heart and that last panel is the proof: Twilight ends up talking to Yor in his mind.
This is one of the most genuine moments they've had. If you ask me, much more exciting than the fake Twiyor moment. Didn't I tell you at some point the fake and real moments would switch? It's starting to happen 😎

Something I've Been Reminded Of
Spoilers for Ch 86
Kicking off season 2 of Spy x Family we have the long awaited date of Loid and Yor-which was just lovely-and in that we got this line from Loid:
Tumblr media
Of course, this is just him drastically missing the actual cause of Yor's poor mood, but Agent Twilight believes that he has made Yor cross with him for asking for help running the household. This is a marriage of convenience after all, not an actual partnership.
While it's never made the forefront of a scene, at least not in an overtly plot heavy way, Loid is often shown doing the majority of the house work. He cooks, cleans, helps Anya study, cares for Bond, etc. He'll even make sure that dinner is ready for Yor when she comes home late. Not to say Yor doesn't do anything, she's often shown preparing drinks and will help clean up now and then, but the implication is that Loid does 90% of the chores along with raising Anya, caring for Bond, his work as a fake psychiatrist, his work as an actual spy, along with whatever day trips/misadventures the family gets up to.
But he will not ask for Yor's help, because this whole thing is a marriage of connivence; it's 'for the mission'.
Then we get chapter 86. Twilight is hurt from a gun fight with his brother-in-law, has just faced a representation of his worst traits in Winston, and gotten into a "fight" with Yor which he has no idea the cause of. Loid has officially been pushed to the limit and the moment he gets home-the moment he feels safe-the sight of Yor smiling through the threshold causes him to collapse and ask:
Tumblr media
And Yor:
Tumblr media
Which shocks Twilight. He is at his lowest point and is expecting for Yor to actually get upset with him, under the impression that she'll see his need for help as a burden.
Yor has always been eager to help Loid, but never wanted to overstep this unspoken boundary they have. She isn't his actual wife, not actually Anya's birth mother. She's there to keep up appearances, it's not her place to be a wife helping her husband. She will still hesitate around Anya for actions that are unavoidably motherly. It's not her place, Loid is handling it even if he's struggling.
Which is why Yor is glad to be asked for help.
Tumblr media
How many characters both acknowledge Twilight needs help and actually offer help? Let alone with no ulterior motives. WISE is under the impression that everything they ask is within Twilight's capabilities and even Franky, the only person in his life who could be considered a friend, needs to maintain a certain distance as to not arouse suspicion for either of them.
Yor's position as mother for the Forger family has granted her both the closeness needed to see how ragged Loid's been run, but also be in a position to offer help that can be reciprocated. The only thing holding her back has been Loid not asking for assistance and her being to worried for her position in the family to ask.
And now that Loid has reached out, Yor will do all she can to ease his burdens. Even with Twilight resolving to be better, to be the perfect spy he's been slipping from, I don't think Yor's going to let him go back to bad habits. He needs help, he's asked for help, she's going to help.
Yor is going to aggressively care for Loid, and through shenanigins break down those barriers of his.

The kindness surviving
As I can't stop saying, one of my favourite things about Spy x Family is how focused it is on humanity's innate kindness. Its premise is three lonely people finding a family (and themselves) with each other, the story's endgame is to secure peace, it's hopeful in the midst of its realism, and it allows characters to be vulnerable when it comes to family and connections.
And one more thing that is added to that, is how Yor and Twilight (to a less obvious degree) have retained their kindness and compassion through their violent lives and professions.
Yor started the assassin gig when she was just a teenager.
Tumblr media
Adding to that how it was a choice she made out of despair and lack of any other choice, and how the Shopkeeper seems like a despicable person to work under (there's no moral merit to recruiting children for assassinations, let alone orphans with no other choices left), this could have easily made into a story of how Yor became cold and emotionless and cruel.
Instead, particularly thanks to having Yuri in her life, she's remained as kind as ever, even when she kills people. She doesn't torture her targets, would rather refrain spilling unnecessary blood, and she's careful and quick in her job.
And through all that, her priority has never been herself.
Tumblr media
She's kind, almost to a fault. She's polite and when it comes to everyone else but her targets, she thinks they have the best interests at heart and can even be confused sometimes as to why some people behave in a rude or cruel way.
She's human. Her reason to start and continue being an assassin was to ensure her brother's carefree life, and now that she's bonded with the Forgers, they've joined Yuri in the way she wishes to protect their peaceful life.
It's showing that despite her violent work, her humanity has prevailed, making her selfless and nurturing. It's in our nature.
Twilight's case is handled differently, as he has denied himself any identity and attachments to ideals, aside from protecting the peace.
Tumblr media
He's not supposed to "have" traits or a personality. He was trained to be able to adapt to any situation and become the role he's acting as. When he acts as a father, he can be kind and caring. When he acts as a terrorist, he can be cruel and violent. And when his job gives him no option but to kill people who stand in his way, he'll do it without remorse.
But again, like Yor, his reason to do everything he does is to ensure peace remains, so that no-one will have to suffer like he did. That's a very empathetic and compassionate motivation, and though the circumstances of his life made him bury it deep, the moment Anya cries and clutches onto him for comfort he's reminded securely of that.
As he is when he sees Anya smile.
Tumblr media
He cares for the next generation and wants to provide it with a better future than he had. And while the previous season showed many moments of instinctual kindness (saving the kid from the charging cow, sparing the German shepherd, thanking Bond for saving Anya, encouraging Carroll Campbell to play fairly) and understanding of how humans can work together (his discussion with Desmond, talking about how despite different stances, people can still meet in the middle if they try), the cruise arc showed how he prioritized on making Anya happy. While at first he was confused by the concept of "having fun", he eventually ended up observing Anya and encouraging activities that would make her happy.
Tumblr media
Again, after a certain point the "mission" is nowhere in his mind and he only worries how Anya's mood will affect her and the family. As he focuses on that, he turns compassionate, empathetic, and dare I say, sweet.
And I can't help thinking those are traits he doesn't have to pretend that much to show, if at all.
Tumblr media
He's a master of manipulation and deception. He could act tooth-rottingly sweet to deceive his targets, but seeing how open and unprecedentedly honest he becomes with Yor, and how (even if he doesn't realize it) he actually learns to be a good father to help Anya with her mood, I don't think that's the case with those two (three, if you count Bond too!).
If nothing else, we (and Anya) have the advantage of hearing his thoughts, and while we joke about how "For The Mission" is his flimsy excuse to himself for the feelings he's developing for his family, it's truly important how he's started to not need the reminder; how he can instinctively care for them, because it's what his compassionate nature tells him to do.
And I think, just like Yor, it's very important and telling that through his life of violence and deception, his humanity has survived just under the surface and is starting to show more the longer he stays with the Forgers. He's not "learning" to be compassionate and caring; those are traits that already existed, but he had to cover with all his fake identities. However, since they were what led him to become a spy in the first place, the way didn't replace the motivation.
He's human, even though he willingly trained to suppress any such vulnerable spots, they could never be extinguished entirely.
This story is full of hope for humanity and how kindness can survive and prevail among anything else. Its characters would logically follow the example.
And I love them for it.
(Anime only here, don't spoil me for the manga)

okay my absolute favorite thing about sxf is just how goddamn stupid loid and yor can be. like they're clearly both highly intelligent people in their own ways, but when it comes to handling their feelings for each other?? completely helpless. not a clue on earth. it's so entertaining and frustrating at the same time and i absolutely love it.

I have a new Spy x Family theory for you
Damian was born to be a project Apple kid, and Melinda knows.
It's been a pretty popular theory in this fandom that Donovan Desmond is somehow involved in Project Apple and the human experimentation because it would make sense from a story point of having the "main bad guy" be tied to Anya in some way. Upon further thinking about this I had the thought of why he would want to be involved in such a project. The answer came to me:
He is a power hungry warmonger. He wants a weapon he can control.
So, my theory is that Damian was born to be able to make him super-powered weapon and this theory makes sense considering Melinda's thoughts towards her son.
If we consider that Melinda is in on it, yet resents her husband and feels guilty about it, all of her spiraling thoughts can be understood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's breakdown what Melinda says here considering this theory:
"If anything had happened to you I don't know how I'd..." React to it, would it be despair or relief?
"If only he died in the hijacking..." Then I would be free of this guilt that is plaguing me.
"How glad I am that he's safe." Because his death would jeopardize the plan.
"If only I weren't burdened with this child." If only this had never happened to me.
"So sweet how he puts on this brave front." How pitiful that he's still trying to maintain an image for me.
"My treasure." My sweet son.
"My curse." The guilt of what I have done and will do eats away at me.
"But in exchange you absolutely cannot let that man know I came here." You cannot let your father know that I actually care about you.
Assuming that this theory is true it makes sense why Melinda and Donovan seem to be so detached from Damian, yet still enrolled him into Eden and care about his safety. They need to maintain the image that they are a "normal family" for their status and can show that by putting Damian in a prestigious school. Additionally, they get the benefit of not having to take care of him directly by putting him in the dorms.
Why hasn't Damian already been experimented on? It seems they are waiting for the experiments to be completed or at least a little more fool proof. It's no coincidence that Anya is the only person we've seen so far with actual abilities as it's implied that the rest of the test subjects could not handle the procedure and died as a result.
This happening would also be a good juxtaposition to the Forger family. The Forgers are a family that is "fake" yet Loid and Yor would never take advantage or hurt Anya versus the "real" Desmond family that would let their son become a science experiment if it meant that Donovan could have more power.
Of course, there are missing details to this theory. We still haven't yet met Demetrius and don't know for sure that Donovan is involved in Project Apple, but I'd say this theory is a pretty safe bet.
I imagine that closer to the finale of the series we are going to have a mission where we have to go and save Damian which will involve the whole cast and lead to the conclusion of the series.

Post Reveal Convo
YOR: “Ooh, I stopped counting after I got into the triple digits.”
MELINDA: “Oh… oh my. D-does your husband know?”
YOR: “He does! It took me a while to tell him the truth, though. These kinds of conversations can be so troublesome, after all. But it turns out, we have a very similar number of conquests!”
MELINDA: “Uh… you don’t say?”
YOR: “Yes! Isn’t that funny? Although, not to brag but lowers voice I have nearly a dozen more than him.”
MELINDA: “Er-“
YOR: “Similar levels of experience really do matter in situations like this, don’t you think? Loid and I are quite capable of handling all kinds of situations together! One-on-one is rarely an option with our lifestyle, so we’re quite used to handling multiple people at once. I prefer to get up close and personal, but Loid does love his toys. Especially projectiles.”
MELINDA: “Projectiles???”
YOR: “Oh yes! Not my preference, but I must admit they always leave such interesting splatter patterns.”
MELINDA: …
ALSO MELINDA: “Sooooo, I don’t suppose you and your husband are busy this Saturday night, huh?”

Thinking about the similarities between these two scenes… Twilight pushes himself to the brink of exhaustion yet holds it together so no one can clock his weaknesses. He needs to be at the top of his game, because he’s known as Westalis’ greatest spy to everyone in Wise. Handler sees him as a workhorse, Nightfall sees him as infallible, and even Frankie is fooled by his exterior.
But Anya and Yor offer Twilight relief. They offer to take on his burden, they try their best to make his life easier in many ways. They acknowledge his hard work and sacrifice (though Anya is not as verbal about it) in a way that is sympathetic to his struggle, not expectant of his success. Twilight is allowed to be Loid, a regular guy, when he is with his “family”. And that sense of normalcy is so foreign that he is fully incapable of handling it with the same grace as his other missions.
