Spring rolls were on the menu this past weekend at youth group. Those who arrived early pitched in to roll them up. We then continued our study of Jesus' 'I am' statements, focusing this week on 'I am the good shepherd.'

thinking about making ANOTHER dragon alien world that's more spec bio based where dragons are a 3-sex species with high dimorphism: sex 1 "inseminator" dragons are smaller and more maneuverable with brighter colors and midsize wings for speedy flight and catching small prey, sex 2 "egg producer" dragons are medium sized with fast land speeds for tackling larger land prey and large wings for slower, longer flights, and sex 3 "egg incubator/layer” dragons are larger and have upward facing horns and upward facing spikes on their backs and smaller wings to be more formidable to aerial confrontation, and to best protect the nest

they often settle into mategroups of up to 6 adult dragons and their offspring, though most are more in the 4-5 dragon range. despite 3 being the fewest amount of dragons needed to lay a clutch, 3-dragon mategroups are actually rarer than 6-dragon ones. it just doesn't happen that often.

a mategroup will raise one clutch of up to 8 dragonets to near adulthood in semi-solitude away from other dragons, only gathering with other mategroups one or two times a year for particularly good hunts and to socialize the young ones

when the young dragons get old enough, they'll leave the nest and join youthgroups, wandering group of 10-or-so young adult dragons that generally roam around making asses of themselves, fighting and making friends with other youthgroups, and eating prey items (and sometimes eggs!) that belong to other dragons until they eventually split into other mategroups. or don't! some of them just hang out forever, or live solitary lifestyles or hang out with non-mating groups.

Moved back to my hometown for 6 months to avoid a bitter winter on one of the most southern settlements (and yes I am talking southern-hemisphere, I am not far from Antarctica at the bottom of New Zealand) in the world.. and I'm quite bummed at how homophobic this town stil is!! It's always been more repressive than every other city in NZ but I got to actually hear two women brazenly label me a 'homosexual' and 'an abomination' with as much vitriol as you can imagine, just walking past me down the street. They did not make eye contact, they more looked through me but any safety I thought had come with the last decade of public opinion and even our new Mayor having a gay son... out the window. This is the same town I have been screamed at with slurs, chased, and pelted with rocks. I have more to lose now as my toddler was literally with me for the experience yesterday... but I'm gonna stay a beacon of blue hair and multiple pride patches on my fave jean jacket, because even if it makes me a bright and shiny target for bigots, I know it also makes me a beacon of hope for those of us stuck in this town, repressed and changed by the safety that is sometimes needed from blending in... I will stay a beacon

This week, youth group began a new series on Jesus' "I am" statements found in the Gospel of John. The first lesson was, "I am the bread of life" (John 6:22-51). How wonderful to explore this text after having broken bread together!
