Study for The Curing of Legion, 2022. Acrylic on paper, W52 x H33cm. A subject I have returned to after almost 40 years, the incident - especially as given in Luke 8:26-39 - has so many resonances. Attitudes to mental health, how we treat other species, the notion that madness recognises the divine (“What do want of me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?”). I have been led back to it having been invited to participate in a group of seven artists responding to the poetry of Charles Causley in July. Although Causley’s Healing of a Lunatic Boy is based on Matthew 17:14-18, I have always conflated it with the curing of the Gesarene.
