Some time ago, I commissioned art of my favorite ship from various artists for my fic Unheavy. A duo piece from the same fic, as well as unrelated Kyoru, can be found here.
Here's the second of two trio pieces from the same fic! This one was done by Nora Smith, who.... has the same profile info but is overtaken by math memes i guess i know how to pick 'em but again, I had a good experience with her

It was a lovely summer day. Tohru decided to go for a walk in town, wherever her feet took her. Kyo, knowing her tendency to get lost even in local areas, thought he might as well get some air too. Yuki had tried to read but soon felt twitchy inside by himself, so he tagged along as well.
And so, eventually they ended upon either side of her, taking her hands like always. They were just about to cross the street when—
“Ai-chan! Yu-chan!”
Tohru's iron grip made them both stop, looking at her and then where she was staring. The paths were crowded, so neither of them could tell anything.
“It’s— it's— them, it’s definitely them, I know it is!!” Her voice was quiet, but her barely contained fangirl elation was crystal-clear.
"Who?" said Kyo.
"Where?" said Yuki.
"Aizo-kun, and Yuu-kun, and I heard Suzumi-san too," she replied in a shrill whisper, pulling them a few steps forward on shaking legs. “What do I do?!?!”
The answer turned out to be...
...nothing.
Someone passed Kyo in the crowd, their hat pulled low, a dark (blue??) ponytail and blue eyes giving him a crackle of recognition. There was delay in noticing the two people following him because suddenly he had to help Yuki keep Tohru upright, her knees buckling as she let out a tiny squeak.
"Oh my gosh," she breathed, face bright pink. "Oh my gosh Aizo-kun looked at me...! And Hiyo— Suzumi-san too?!"
"H-Hey," he exclaimed as she nearly goes all the way down; he looked at Yuki and exasperation flared upon seeing his dazed face. "Damn rat, get ahold of yourself!"
Somehow they all made it over to a bench in one piece.
Tohru was shaking, hands clutching her own shirt "Th-They're even more stunning..."
"In person...!" Yuki finished her sentence, looking only slightly more together.
Kyo rolled his eyes, resolutely tamping down the celebrity forcefield tingles. Somehow, though, seeing Suzumi-san up close, even for a second...
He blinked, shaking his head. Yuki and Tohru resolved into their everyday selves, rather than the brightly-clad, head-mic-wearing duo he saw for a second; the roar of a lightstick-wielding crowd dulled to the murmur of shoppers and commuters walking by.
What the hell was that?
"And they really are just... like us."
If it weren't for his Zodiac-enhanced senses, he would've missed what she said in a whisper. As it was, well— "The hell do you mean, like us?"
She blushed, again. (Strangely, Yuki did too.) "W-Well, that is... I mean, I w-w-wish..."
He didn't push her when she trailed off, the answer just out of reach in his mind but just clear enough to make his face warm. Why??? He grumbled, irritable now, yet not inclined to move with the other two still sitting.
"I'm thirsty," Yuki announced, sounding a bit wobbly still.
"Oh! We passed a lemonade cart a while back. What do you think, Kyo-kun?"
He stood, pulled up along with her, and Yuki, because she took their hands again. "Y-Yeah, okay."
Truth be told (which it couldn't be, not yet, if ever), he'd be fine wandering around with them for the rest of the day if that was what they wanted.

Fruits Basket is wild because the premise is "Haha! Wow! These Pretty Anime Men turn into Animals when theyre hugged and then when they turn back they're NAKED!!! 😳😳😳 ehe silly anime!" but then you watch it and its like. Every Character on this show is physically, financially, and emotionally controlled by one person with immeasurable wealth and power. the main characters stories revolve around their slow recovery from the trauma of physical/verbal abuse, sexual manipulation, and neglect. there's a love triangle that isnt even about Who Gets The Girl, but rather each individual's growth as a human being, understanding that they are worthy of love and compassion, that there are people in this world who will love them, unconditionally, and that they DESERVE to be loved. love EXISTS and nothing about them makes them unworthy of whole, unbiased love. that realization is a pivotal part of their healing and it's a central theme of the show that comes up for each and every character, whose own journeys follow that same thread of healing past wounds with compassion, love, and friendship.
and then they like. barely ever turn into animals.

WARNING: FRUITS BASKET SPOILERS AND UNPOPULAR OPINION AHEAD.
So I know this wasn’t everyone’s experience, but I remember reading Fruits Basket for the first time and being entirely enamored in both Yuki and Kyo. I remember thinking “Dang, how is Tohru gonna pick between these two?” I remember everytime I’d be convinced Kyo was in the lead, the very next chapter Yuki would convince me otherwise.
Now rereading (And watching 2019) it’s obvious who Tohru is actually falling for. It’s obvious who has real chemistry with her, and it’s obvious that Yuki’s feelings are not developing in the same way that Kyo’s are. The clues are there! However these clues are woven in the narrative in such a way that for many first time readers/viewers it isn’t glaringly obvious.
Takaya is a great writer because many of us fall for the facade of the love triangle, while still not needing any extra convincing when things unfold the way they do. They feel natural and rewarding. The character development makes sense.
That being said, I wish people didn’t act like it was so taboo to ship Yuki and Tohru. Like don’t get me wrong I love Kyoru, and Yumachi way more. Hell I’d rather see Tohru with Momiji, than with Yuki. But it’s literally part of Yuki’s own introspection that he at least thinks he has feelings for Tohru. So it’s not unreasonable that readers/viewers pick up on some romantic attraction between the two and let their head canons run wild. People out here shipping characters that have never even met in the canon, but god forbid Tohru smooch Yuki in any universe cuz “That’s his mom.”
I think people are right to want to protect the platonic love that is Yuki and Tohru. I totally agree that platonic love is such a rarity in media, and Tohru and Yuki’s friendship is so well written that I entirely understand why people think it’s a disservice to their dynamic and character development to ship them romantically. However I think its arguable that acknowledging the “romantic side” of their relationship adds to how special and important their platonic love is. They made it through their awkward hetero normative stage and found some real love and friendship in there. That’s growing up, that’s finding your tribe.
I also understand that each of our individual experiences mold how we respond to these characters. For many people relating to Yuki or Tohru makes them reject the idea of them being romantic even harder. For me, I relate to Yuki in a lot of ways, one of which being I have had a lot of misplaced love in my life. I too would later realize that my feelings were less romantic, and more a manifestation of another feeling, but that doesn’t invalidate the fact that I indulged in the crush when I thought that’s what it was. So that is where I can understand the appeal in that sort of ship, because it’s about the raw human experience and the ride. It’s about being a confused teenager, who loves harder than maybe they needed to, or meant to.
I also simply do not think it’s fair to the new FuruBa fans, to act like they are silly for seeing Yuki as a potential end game for Tohru. Part of the fun is rooting for Kyo and then actually getting that pay off. Part of the experience is seeing Yuki fall in love again, but this time for real and with Machi, someone he can love on a two way street. I would love to relive Fruits Basket like it was the first time.
Anyway ship or don’t, your feelings and interpretations on the matter are valid. Just remember that not everyone experiences the series the same way, and how much more fun that makes the meta and analysis!

"Rat. Are you awake?"
Yuki is. Of course he is. The knock on his wall that should surprise simply doesn't.After yesterday's open-window fiasco he had come up with enough excuses to barely see Kyo or Tohru, and skipped out on dinner again— he'd found a tray of steaming soup and rice left at his bedroom door when he finally ventured out, surely courtesy of Tohru. He felt embarrassed the entire time he was eating it (delicious, as usual); why couldn't he be grown up and pretend everything was normal like those two were doing?
He gets up and taps back, then puts his ear to the wall.
"Tohru has something she wants to tell you."
He can hear her rough breathing. So they're starting up again.
"You've been avoiding us, Yuki-kun. I don't like that. A-And Kyo-kun doesn't eith— ah...!"
Kyo shushes her harshly.
"You know it's true," she whispers back. Then, louder, "So, Yuki-kun, I have a," a broken moan, "a deal for you."
Yuki's been half-hard since he started listening, the Pavlovian response already inescapable. He shuts his eyes and inhales slowly, hand trailing down to his pajama waistband.
What is he doing with you?
"He's, oh, he's just teasing me with his finger. I'm on my hands and knees, Yuki-kun."
Dear god. He said it out loud, enough so she could hear, and he hadn't intended to at all. A whimper sneaks out of him before he bites his lip to cut off anything more.
"Tell him what you wanted to, baby, or that's all you're getting." Kyo must be speaking right in her ear, because his voice is right in Yuki's too.
"But— but the deal... Whatever happens here stays here. And if you... if you still spend time with us outside of this, the way we always do, and if you can pretend this only exists during these moments... Then we'll let you watch us."
He jumps to full hardness immediately, a moan tumbling free as he shoves down his pants and starts stroking, heart beating wildly. "Please, fuck, I'll do anything, please...!"
"That's— K-Kyo!— That's good. Okay. Then that's what we'll do. Kyo, please, wh-what are you...!"
"Good girl," Kyo says, voice rough. "I wanna give you something special for that. And you, rat." There's some rustling, creaking; what position are they getting into now? And then his hand smacks the wall and Yuki jumps, dick throbbing. "Make it to the weekend. Saturday. If you keep our agreement 'til then, you'll get your reward."
It's only Tuesday. Yuki doesn't care, even though that might as well be a lifetime away. "Yes, yes," he whines, and he doesn't care, not with Tohru echoing him desperately.
"Oh, Yuki-kun, he's— his tongue, he's l-l-licking—!"
"Oh, god," Yuki gasps, shuddering at the image in his head. He wants to be tasting her right now, wants to make her ride his mouth while Kyo fucks him into the sheets.
Tohru shouts for Kyo, a thump that must be her head hitting the wall, and then: "Yuki-kun, wait for me. You can't... you can't c-come until I tell you."
Instantly he stops, shaking with the effort. Tohru's... command has him dangerously close already, but Tohru doesn't sound far behind, chanting Kyo's name.
"Yes, yes, oh, right there!"
"Tohru," Yuki says, barely a whisper. "Come on, sweetheart, please..."
A short, sharp scream that turns into a sobbing moan, begging for more. And then silence, just heavy breathing, and then she says, hoarse-voiced, "Are you still hanging on?"
He started teasing himself again, listening to her reach and then tumble through her orgasm, but he hasn't given in. "Yes. I've— I've waited."
Kyo laughs softly. "Didn't think you had it in you."
Fuck you, he definitely only thinks, feeling suddenly smug.
"Good boy, Yuki-kun. You can go ahead now."
He's nearly there before she's finished speaking, that phrase unleashing broken gasps and a desperation ten times stronger than anything he's felt since all this started. And he moans her name, and even Kyo's, when he does finally come, his entire body a live wire that almost has him sobbing against the wall; he just gasps raggedly, inhaling oxygen like someone drowning.
"Oh, that's so good, you did so well..." That's Kyo, Kyo is saying that, and then he groans right into the wall, and there's no way any of that is getting unpacked just yet.
He doesn't want to hear them.
He could listen to that praise forever.
"Thank you," he moans out. Delirium and exhaustion, maybe, but he means it.
"We'll see you tomorrow, Yuki-kun."
He sits on the floor against the wall, staring out at nothing, for who knows how long before he cleans up and gets back into bed.

Dark Nights, Brighter Days
Summary: It's been a long time since Kyo has had a bad dream like this, and he feels as though he should be past them by now. Thankfully, he has the two people he loves most in the world by his side to make him feel better.
A short ficlet I found in my drafts based on poly Yuki/Kyo/Tohru from Fruits Basket! Ngl, this is essentially self indulgent fluff. This ship needs more love. I actually posted this on Ao3 a while ago, and have had this sitting in my drafts for ages but figured I should finally post it here too!
This fic can also be read on Ao3!
The flash of a hand, glass shattering, and endless tears. It’s not coherent enough to make sense of, but it’s more than enough to elicit a pure fear response and send chills up his spine. He wishes this was over, it was supposed to be over, but he knows better than to think he’ll ever be able to escape. The best he can do is try to run away for as long as he can, before it all catches up and steals the small amount of happiness he’s been able to collect. He starts to run again, but the shadows overtake him and he falls to the ground--
Kyo wakes with a start, gripping the sheets in clenched fists. He sits up and shrugs the blankets off, despite the chill. It takes him a long moment to orient himself, and he fights to calm his racing heartbeat. In the time it takes him to realize where he is, a shape beside him stirs into wakefulness.
“Kyo-kun...? Is everything alright?”
He looks over to see Tohru blinking sleepily up at him, her eyebrows scrunching together in worry. The sight of her face is enough to help calm him slightly and he smiles weakly at her.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you. Just a bad dream. Go back to sleep,” he murmurs. Whether he would be able to get back to sleep was another question. Maybe he’d go for a walk or something. He didn’t need to bother her with this. It was all in the past now, really, though his subconscious still hadn’t gotten the message apparently.
“Don’t be silly. How can I go back to sleep when you’re probably all shaken up?” Tohru sits up with him and drapes herself over his shoulders in a hug. The motion jostles the bed lightly, and Kyo can feel another shape shifting on his other side. Yuki rolls to look up at the pair and smiles softly.
“Hm, I see you two were planning to cuddle without me? I’m wounded,” he says playfully, brushing hair out of his eyes. Kyo turns to look at the other and grimaces.
“Dammit, I can’t believe I woke both of you with my stupid nightmare. It’s nothing, really.”
Yuki’s smile drops off of his face as he processes the words.
“A nightmare? It’s been a while since you had one of those. Did you want to talk about it?”
Yuki reaches out a hand in search of Kyo’s, who takes it gladly, though he looks away from both him and Tohru. It has been a while. He thought he’d finally freed himself of the last vestiges of his life before the curse was broken, but here it is reminding him it’ll be part of his memories forever.
“Not really. It’s nothing new, anyway,” he mutters.
Tohru makes a sound of sympathy as she rubs light circles into his back. They both know the nightmare he’s talking about. It’s not the first time they’ve been there after he wakes from one, and he has a feeling it won’t be the last. Since they’ve been around, though, he’s had them less. They help keep the bad dreams away.
Yuki tugs at Kyo’s hand lightly, pulling him gently so he’s laying down again, this time against Yuki’s chest. Tohru smiles at them before laying back down as well, curling into Kyo’s side.
“You know we’d listen regardless,” Yuki murmurs as he tightens an arm around the two of them. Tohru nods in agreement, her hair tickling against Kyo’s arm.
“We just want you to feel safe, Kyo-kun.”
Kyo twines the fingers of his free hand with hers and smiles. It’s amazing how quickly they can make him feel whole again.
“Well, mission accomplished.”
They lay like that for a while, and Kyo lets himself be lulled back to sleep by the soft sound of their heartbeats.
