Long time no update! Still playing regularly but wanted to dive in to a little bit of my deck building journey for a change of pace
Tumblr media
Recently I decided to finally retire some old EDH decks.   I’ve converted decks to something new before but kept the pieces intact so the deck itself still existed. So this is the first time officially retiring one and selling/trading the leftovers Among them was Muldrotha. She was the 2nd commander deck I ever made back in 2018. During construction I was very much blinded by the value she presented being able to replay permanents from the graveyard. When I finally got around to playing it this year it absolutely delivered on that promise of value BUT it was not all that fun to play.  Filling my graveyard with answers to everything was great! However, back then I NOT building with a wincon in mind. That mean most games felt like I was constantly fishing for answers in the graveyard to shut down other players while doing little to advance my own.
Tumblr media
So after admitting it wasn’t working it out it was time to break it down to sell it for parts and possibly use the base cards for a new Commander. Some buds gave me some good options to consider. Like Sidisi or Meren.
Tumblr media
Sidisi was another prominent Sultai commander but it didn’t excite me in the same way Muldrotha did. Meren on the other hand was a deck I’d considered building for awhile. I had the Precon. I had a lot of her core cards already. I liked her artistocrats gameplan. However, I had a reanimator deck with Chainer that had a bit of overlap with her already. Especially with Wincons.
Tumblr media
At this time it also happened to be building a Goro-Goro and Satoru deck. This meant that a lot of splashy creatures from my old Satoru deck free agents now. So I went my bud Preston’s suggestion that was the perfect home for the leftovers from both!
Tumblr media
The Mimeoplasm! It can dump all my favorite nasty creatures from Satoru into the graveyard. Then mix and match to make even bigger threats while retaining what I loved about Muldrotha. Heck I might even throw Muldrotha into the 99 once in awhile too. Overall the deck feels way more focused and fun in playtesting. I look forward to playing it in person soon!
Tumblr media
Thanks for reading my little post about my deck building journey! I’d love to hear about some of yours! Let me know in the comments if you want about decks you’ve retired and turned into something else!

Dimir ninjas
Ninja in legacy is a strong deck that's not represented much in the meta. Our LGS has a very good player and the list is pretty stock. I'm posting this list because it's dropping the Retrofitter Foundry for a full Ninjutsu package and 2 Chrome Moxes. When I snap a Yuriko playset I will definitely try this list.
kage bunshin no jutsu!
2 Bloodstained Mire 4 Brainstorm 3 Changeling Outcast 2 Chrome Mox 2 Consign/Oblivion 3 Daze 2 Flooded Strand 4 Force of Will 4 Ingenious Infiltrator 2 Island 4 Moon-Circuit Hacker 1 Murderous Cut 1 Of One Mind 4 Ornithopter 4 Polluted Delta 1 Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh 1 Snuff Out 1 Swamp 4 Thousand-Faced Shadow 3 Underground Sea 4 Wasteland 4 Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow 1 Fatal Push 3 Force of Negation 1 Hurkyl's Recall 2 Hydroblast 2 Null Rod 3 Plague Engineer 3 Surgical Extraction

On Unfinity Legality (Storytime)
One of the things that got me into Magic, truly got me into Magic, was Unglued. When a friend of mine was campaigning to get me to play MtG back in 2002, he had an uphill battle. I'd just stopped playing and collecting Pokémon and didn't want a new TCG hobby. Sure, I'd been interested in Magic since it came out (I can point out a few notable moments), but I'd never had anyone to actually play with and had lost that interest by then.
So. Said friend played Magic, and wanted me to be playing it too. He showed me the art which I loved, taught me the gameplay which confused me, and introduced me to the lunchroom MtG group who were all pretty chill folks. None of these swayed me. Finally, he told me about a joke set which had come out a few years prior. It was a set full of self-referential gags which poked fun at characters, storylines, mechanics, and everything else about the game. This was it. There was space in this complicated, epic card game for lore, for humor, for SQUIRRELS. I was hooked, and that friend built me a (black-bordered) squirrel deck.
Tumblr media
I later learned that the silver-bordered joke cards weren't legal to play in the formats that existed, and that my friends who played followed the formats. I bought a few of the joke cards because I thought they were funny or liked the art or both, but never got to play with them.
Fast forward to 2011, when Commander became A Thing in the larger Magic community. It was the ultimate casual format, which meant that I finally felt it was time to suggest using silver-bordered cards among friends (two of the three were in my original MtG group). I think the first card I used in a deck, the one that would prove that at least some of them were fine for regular gameplay, was Land Aid '04.
Tumblr media
This card does exactly what a green land ramp card would do at a cost that was normal at that time. They were fine with it. I tried a few more cards in a few other decks, most of which didn't break our games and weren't too far out of the realm of what could be done in normal Magic. Sometimes there was a cute twist, but most of the time the effects cared about a normally irrelevant aspect of the card, like Super Secret Tech in the Riku of Two Reflections deck I was in the process of blinging out.
Tumblr media
That was over ten years ago. To this day, I still put a silver-bordered card or two in my Commander decks - Jodah Superfriends runs Alexander Clamilton, Yuriko Ninjas runs B.O.B. (Bevy of Beebles), Saskia used to run Pointy Finger of Doom (flavor home run, but not fast enough for my aggro deck). Chatterfang Squirrels has a mere four: Acornelia, Fashionable Filcher, Earl of Squirrel, Form of the Squirrel, and Land Aid '04; the most egregious card in that deck is a Gaea's Cradle, which I personally feel should be banned in Commander (and my friends may very well ban it themselves if that deck ever gets better than a solid seven).
My friends - people I've been playing with for twenty years and have known for even longer than that - trust me to only pick silver-bordered cards that will enhance the game, rather than break it. They themselves don't play with them, though. I won't deny that it feels a little awkward knowing I've given myself access to a slightly larger card pool than they have, even if they're just denying themselves.
Either way, I can only play these decks with specific friends. Amongst ourselves, we politely ask each other to remove egregious cards (Aura Shards in a Karador, Ghost Chieftain turbo-reanimator deck, for example), and have gotten along about it for over a decade. However, if I brought my Chatterfang deck to a Commander Night or FNM, I'd have to remove four of the least offensive and most on-theme cards in the deck before even leaving the house, just because they care about artwork, make me sing a little song, or were printed in sets that defaulted to silver borders. I would not have to remove Gaea's Cradle.
Tumblr media
For those who don't want to sit across from it, maybe you don't realize it, but people who have severe aversions to certain things (trigger warnings for all of these links if this type of thing bothers you) - spiders, body horror, mutilation, etc. - have had to sit across from people playing cards with that kind of artwork this whole time. Even mechanically, Goblin Game and Raging River are perfectly legal, and if I take a reanimator deck to FNM, I can't politely ask my opponent not to play absolute hosers like Relic of Progenitus.
Tumblr media
The stigma around silver borders is old, and and persisted throughout just about all casual formats. That's why Mark Rosewater and his team did what they did with Unfinity. They realized that there were plenty of cards that don't break the game, and made it so that people who like that kind of flavor in their game can play it.
So yes. I'll be unashamedly playing Comet, Stellar Pup in my Superfriends deck once I get one. But I'm not planning on removing Alexander Clamilton any time soon, and I've already gushed endlessly about Vorthos, Steward of Myth as a commander.
Tumblr media
I hope Unfinity being half and half opens people up to considering other silver-bordered/acorn cards in their own games. In addition to accepting Un-humor into eternal-legal Magic, let's remove the stigma around all printed cards, decide which ones fit best with our home groups, and make it acceptable to ask strangers about them without shame.

LiS characters at an Commander/EDH Table Headcanon
A/N: This was originally supposed to be a “What MTG color identity would the LiS 1 characters be?” And then I sat down and went “Lmoa no, this is idea way funnier.” and besides parts of that original HC will inevitably bleed through here. I guess really the only fanon “changes” here would be that I’ll be mentioning cards from FAR past 2013 so ig do whatever mental gymnastics you need to do there. Oh, and we’re supposing that any of the characters could afford to splurge on multiple commander decks.
Tumblr media
Max Caulfield
you wouldn’t think it because of how genuinely she just appreciates shuffling up, sitting down, and spending time with the other Blackwell nerds, but Max can and will optimize her decks to a fault.
It’s less about “competitive viability” and more because she just appreciates brewing highly interactive spell-slinger stuff.
Has a pet Narset extra turns deck. You cannot convince me otherwise. When it pops off, she definitely excitedly texts Chloe about being “a time master in AND out of game”.
The only person on Earth I would smile at and encourage after I hear the phrase “I cast Expropriate for free. Responses?”
One of those “I’m addicted to R/U please God help me break out of this archetype” people but is somehow adorkable about it
Will target you if she picks up even the slightest hint that you’re about to Cyclonic Rift and not just because you’re... you know... casting Cyclonic Rift.
Tumblr media
Chloe Price
Very much loves jank. Something about the “isle of broken toys” triumphing against whatever monstrosity everyone else brought really appeals to her.
Loves the idea of certain archetypes, but as long as a given list guarantees that she’s playing lots of cards and doing lots of things on her turns, she’ll mainly just build whatever she thinks is cool.
As a result, Chloe has run Yuriko and Beckett Brass decks in the past.
“Come on Max, did you really think I’d pass up being able to beat you all with pirates? You already know I'm ALL over that. Ninjas are hella awesome too.”
It doesn’t hurt that Yuriko can wipe the floor with everyone if they aren’t careful.
Doesn’t gravitate towards a specific color or color combo but plays aggressively in whatever flavor she finds appealing.
And I do mean AGGRESSIVELY. Chloe loves the serotonin rush of slapping a ton of guys down and then turning them all sideways even if it leaves her open to dying in the next few turns.
Even if she doesn’t take things super seriously, she will definitely high-key target you in the next game if you fucked her over in the previous one.
Tumblr media
Kate Marsh
Kate took some convincing that Magic wasn’t some weird ritual since her parents almost certainly forbade her from even learning about it as a kid and filled her head with satanic panic BS.
Once she actually sat in on a game or two (and after Max showed her Rin and Seri), she was able to set her compunctions aside and will show up to game night when her schedule allows.
in the same way Chloe builds what she thinks is cool, Kate definitely builds what she thinks is cute. (*cough* Kwain *cough*)
The first deck she built on her own was almost certainly Jinnie Fay go-wide.
Will cry inside (and honestly maybe a few tears escape on the outside.) if you board wipe. Not because her board presence is gone and she’ll need to rebuild but because you just killed Molly, Holly, Taylor, and every other token she’d given a loving name.
Tumblr media
Warren Graham
Is THAT combo player. An absolute menace. What else were you expecting?
Maybe it’s just my bias against Warren showing here, but he’s definitely the kind of guy who goes “Oops! I win!” out of nowhere after just playing solitaire in the background for 5-6 turns to set up.
Still keeps some lower power stuff around in case people get too upset about it though.
Much like Chloe, doesn’t really have a preferred color combo. Unlike Chloe, he builds whatever he can optimize to a disgusting degree.
Usually wins game 1 pretty easily unless Max stops him but going into game 2 understands that he’s consigned himself to playing archenemy for the rest of the night.
His pet card is probably fuckin’ mana drain or panharmonicon or some shit idk.
Tune in next time for my thesis on why Victoria would play Queen Marchesa jk.
 ... unless.

great Yuriko tech.  High CMC that can easily be cut down.  Can send her back into the command zone if it’s necessary.  Great at forcing through attacks.  Taps down maze of iths.  Octopus Eldrazi Ninja is just an awesome creature type.
