Rileys Fish & Steak
Last visit
1/28/2024 Dine out Vancouver
Tumblr media
Ginger Pine Fizz
Tart and refreshing, but more of a palette cleanser. 3.75 stars
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Appetizer:
Wild Mushroom Soup -
truffle mascarpone cream
candy bacon, fine herbs: smooth and creamy, a little *too* mushroomy for my tastes, but the Mrs loved it.But once you take a spoonful with the candied bacon, the combined flavour simply made sense. 4.25 stars.
Tumblr media
Riley’s Winter Salad -
chicory, ricotta, pears, candied walnuts
hot honey fig dressing: yes, it's merely salad. But what a tasty one; I enjoyed every bite. 4.25 stars.
Tumblr media
Brioche (not part of dine out, ordered separately):
When you see bread at a high end restaurant that's $10, it's usually a good sign. It does not disappoint; like AnnaLena's amazing torn bread, Riley's brioche is an enormous, decadent, elevated feat of baking. 4.75 stars.
Tumblr media
6oz Bacon Wrapped Tenderloin -
whipped potato, winter roasted vegetables
peppercorn sauce:
The steak was good enough to stand on its own, so I was able to use the peppercorn sauce for the incredibly fluffy mashed potatoes. Plus the bacon already acted as seasoning on the steak. 6 Oz doesn't sound like it would be enough, but I was full enough after dinner. The carrots were as buttery as you could imagine.
Tumblr media
This would've been a 5 star entrée, but there were a couple of random hits of salt on my plate (tail end of 1 carrot, the broccoli) that lowered it to 4.75 stars. Someone was a little rushed during dine out.
We could've upgraded to wagyu or added fois gras for an additional charge.
Lobster Squash Ravioli -
east coast lobster meat, crispy sage
mushroom, sweet and sour squash:
To quote the Mrs: this is all she could've asked for, for a lobster ravioli. Personally, I would've enjoyed a cream sauce, but everything on that plate was delicious. I don't even like mushrooms on their own, but they managed to even elevate those with a buttery finish & non rubbery texture (it's usually the texture that ruins them for me. But not here!)
The individual, perfectly cooked pieces of lobster were quite generous as well.
5 stars.
Tumblr media
Chocolate Cake -
caramel sauce, dark chocolate cremeux
laminated almonds:
The cake was light and fluffy, not too sweet, with the Almond brittle providing the hit of sweetness and crunch. 5 stars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lemon Tart
vanilla chantilly, shortbread tart
lemon curd:
Perfect sweetness and tartness, but the vanilla creme on the side was better served with the chocolate cake. Shortbread crust was crispy and buttery. 4.75 stars.
Recommend: everything we ordered.
Overall 9.5/10, 4.75 stars

❆ VANCOUVER (ep45): Burrard & 1st meal in YVR @ Banana Leaf
Sorry guys. .. but I don’t have a hotel-front picture of the hotel DL & I stayed at. .. it’s called the Burrard.
Located at: 1100 Burrard St, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1Y7
Tumblr media
After a loooooong time spent at the airport in Seattle & all the adventures with the boarding passes there, we made it to Vancouver & took the Skytrain from YVR airport to Yaletown-Roundhouse Station. After that, we walked a lengthy uphill walk with our luggage to this hotel. Check-in process was smooth & the staff was glad we made it. (They had in our file that we had canceled 1 night of our stay.) Our room was #220, which as you can see, is located at the end of a hallway.
Tumblr media
The layout & structure of this hotel is interesting! Of course, we didn’t pick it for the design- we picked it based on location & pricing. But yeah.. you can’t tell from the outside but it’s basically a hollow place with an open courtyard/garden that sits on top of the parkade haha.
Tumblr media
There are 4 levels, but I’m not sure if the main floor has any rooms. We didn’t explore but I’m guessing they would have a few? Maybe. Perhaps.
Tumblr media
I’ve seen pictures of what this place looks like in the summer. It’s pretty cute! Like there’s a patio somewhere & some lounge space, & if you’re up for it, you can socialize with other hotel guests. It’s very ‘chill’ type of place. I don’t know why .. . I have never stayed at nor been to a dorm but it has dorm vibes. I think it might be the colour scheme, & the vertical bars that connect the floors. What do you think?
I’ll give the room tour another time bcos . .. we didn’t fully settle before we headed out again haha we were hungry!!
Tumblr media
We walked along Davie Street to go to a restaurant I wanted to revisit.
Tumblr media
This place!
Located at: 1043 Davie St, Vancouver, BC V6E 1M5
I first visited this place in 2015 with my bro-ff Eric & I fell in love with the laksa noodles haha I’ve been recommending this place to ppl coming to Vancouver & I’ve also brought my friends here (Susan & Brenda) in 2017 when we came for Taeyang’s concert. They have several locations in the downtown core so if you’re in downtown Vancouver, you’ll surely come across one of them.
Tumblr media
Weird. .. advertising for another dining establishment.
Tumblr media
At the entrance.
We arrived at a weird time like after 1pm so there was no one inside. (it was also weekday)
Tumblr media
What are your thoughts on this design? haha the little skewers look Japanese vibe to me but the crescent looks kinda. .. Korean?

The menu~ I knew what I was gonna order so this was mainly for DL.
Tumblr media
They had some specials that we were interested in briefly but figured it might be too much food. Their menu is very extensive with many items!!
Tumblr media
DL’s lamb curry - served with some veggies & a ball of rice.
Tumblr media
I tried a little for the sake of trying but I was very. .. meh about it.
Tumblr media
My laksa!!!
I’ll copy the description here (from their website): “ Coconut soup with rice noodles, dried shrimp, chili, garlic, lemongrass, turmeric, bean sprout, tofu, cilantro, egg, chicken, fish cake, squid shrimp.”
Tumblr media
... the laksa again after I picked out the cilantro.
I love noodles soups but I find that this type of cuisine is lacking in Edmonton. The broth looks very rich & creamy but it’s actually not. I don’t wanna say it’s runny but it’s quite light yet flavourful. It’s slightly spicy, & VERY coconut-y. In case you were wondering, the noodle type is the thin rice vermicelli noodles. Altogether, .. YUM!
Talk to you in the next post as DL & I brave the slushy Vancouver weather in mid-February.. .

˖°.𓆩♡𓆪 .°˖ CHARACTER GENERATOR for @yvr-miko
𓆩♡𓆪 part of my lovers level — 3k follower event
𓆩♡𓆪 chosen trope: idiots in love
Tumblr media
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ YOUR CHARACTER IS...
NEITO MONOMA
at the cafe your favourite cafe, you had both placed your orders and the staff said they would bring it out to your table once it's ready. so for now, you both sat together at a table by the window, with idly looking outside while monoma prattled on about his annoying co-workers at the hero agency he was working at.
"they don't listen and are all completely uncoordinated. if i was in charge i'd have fired them ag— are you even listening to me?!" he roars, noticing that you're not making eye-contact and instead staring vacantly out the window.
you glance at him, then turn your whole head to face him, "of course."
momoma's eye widen, anticipating that you'd be harshly snapped back to reality and he'd get to tease you for zoning out. but he was proven wrong, and stammers, "o— oh.. good! because what i'm saying is important."
"sound like you are just complaining about your co-workers." you correct, very matter-of-factly.
but he simply nods with a smug smirk and says, "that's right! anyway, as i was saying, if i were in charge i'd have fired them ages ago and—"
as if a sign that the universe didn't want to hear him moan anymore, a cafe worker approaches your table and places your order on the table. "a cappuccino and croissant." they say, putting it down in front of monoma. "a soy milk latte and brownie." and they put your order down on the table too, but upon hearing this, monoma instantly looks at you.
seeing your brows knit together in frustration confirms his initial notion that they got your order wrong, so he pipes up, "excuse me, she asked for oat milk, not soy."
you raise your eyebrows, not expecting monoma to involve himself (though you should've, because he always very quick to stand up for you). "it's fine, i do—" you try to interject.
but the worker replies faster, picking up your latte with wide eyes, "oh, i'm so sorry, i mixed up your drink with another order. let me go get yours." they scurry away back to the kitchen.
you look to monoma, who is taking a sip of his drink. "you didn't have to do that; it wasn't a big deal." you say, so muted you were basically talking to yourself, but somehow he could still hear you.
"you deserve to have the drink you paid for." monoma replies plainly.
"but you paid for it."
"oh, yeah." monoma nods through a mouthful of food, then swallows before he says, "you deserve to have the drink i paid for."
you snicker a little, and just as you do so, the worker returns with a different drink for you, "here you go, one latte with oat milk. sorry again about the confusion." they smile apologetically towards both of you, "let me know if you need anything else. enjoy the rest of your date." with that, they dart of back to the kitchen.
while you are left flustered by their word choice, monoma gestures to your drink with a skeptical expression, "you should take a sip to make sure they got it right." but when his eyes shift from your drink onto your face and he sees how baffled you look, he asks, "are you okay?"
"yeah, sorry. i was just a bit taken back that the worker thought we are on a date." you chuckle awkwardly.
"right? how idiotic." he scoffs and rolls his eyes, while you take a sip of your drink and hum in agreement.
"that's a bit harsh. i wouldn't call them an idiot but it's strange they'd assume that we're together when we don't act like a couple at all. i wonder if they just think every pair of friends th—"
"honey, you've got froth on your lip." momoma points out with a slight snicker, and despite the contemptuous way he may act around other, you can tell that he isn't trying to mock you or anything like that, and he's simply telling you out of respect.
"ah, alright." just as you are about to look for a napkin, he picks up the one that came with his croissant and interupts by saying,
"let me get it." he insists, leaning across the table as he uses the paper to carefully wipe the froth off your lip. "there we go." he declares proudly as he sits back down.
you smile gently at him, "thank you." you sing, cheeks heating up slightly at the caring act.
"it's nothing, sweetie."
you blink, averting your gaze as you desperately try to change the subject, "what was i talking about, again?"
"the worker mistaking us as a couple."
"oh, right!" you gasp slightly at the reminder, "yeah, that's so silly. why would they think that?" you idle, about to take a bite of your brownie.
monoma shrugs, "i have no idea."
Tumblr media
for @yvr-miko: i was considering giving you katsuki but i think cafe/hiking dates match with monoma more. anyway this was very sweet to write, idiots in love is sm fun 😭

okay this doesnt make sense ive been to like a million different airports and ive been through specifically yvr two million times and its one of the best airports in the entire world. if im flying domestic it takes me maximum 15 minutes to get to my gate the art and design of it is tasteful and comforting it’s well lit there’s a cool water feature it’s spacious but fast to get through it’s not usually insanely crowded it has a normal amount of food options the transit to get there is so easy i dont understand. you’re in and you’re out. But what i also think abt tags on that poll is that most people dont fly a lot (normal and understandable) so if they have one bad experience with delays or getting left on the tarmac they get a grudge against the airport forever even though it’s probably not their fault. these things happen everywhere. thats fair tho i had to spend 16 hours in the victoria airport once and now i hate it even though it’s like. fine. Anyway talking too much about airports

April 15 on Lasqueti Island.
Home after some adventures. i left Puerto by plane to Mexico city, and on my flight to Chetumal for Belize I got Covid. I was the only person on the plane wearing a mask! 1 week sick, blah!
Belize was all about the dentist who made me new dentures, excellent work at 20% of the Canadian price, and still 30% less than the Mexicans. $1000 can dollars all in. Those savings paid for my travel, air b&b, and food. After much online searching I finally chose the first one air b&b I,d seen and it was pretty good. A small house in the yard of a dog rescue center, run by an expat American lady $1500 for the month, and a small pool, AC for the hot afternoons, and a hot plate kitchen. Even a hot shower bathroom. I had 6 devoted dog pals who rushed me whenever I went onto my porch. A few chicken scraps go a long way!
Corozol in Belize was boring, hot, flat, no good food, and no cultural stuff. I met a few people, and was surprised by how many refugees there were from Honduras, Guatemala etc. The bay, and it is extensive, was cloudy with the limestone silt that paves the bottom. I never swam there. So, skip Corozol...
Leaving Belize after my permitted 30 day stay was easy.Eddy the fat taxi driver insisted on leaving at 5 30 am to avoid the Easter Sunday border rush. Actually he just wanted to be at the border to pick up the returning Belizean fares. What the heck, it was time to go and he did whisk me through both border stops. Could have had a trunk full of dope! A second taxi(included in the $40 US $ price got me to the ADO bus station in Chetumal, where the online ticket worked except that the seat I,d saved had been sold. Got another further back and except for the disgruntled Mexican woman who had taken my seat it worked. A 3 hour wait for a 6 hour bus ride. But.. the seats were supremely comfortable, ride a bit bouncy, and I had 5 hours of MP3 music to dull the roar. Went through Tulum, unrecognizable. 5 miles by 3, where in 1980 we had 2 restaurants(chickens chopped to order), one grocery store and a pharmacy. 4 lane highway, and a continous string of luxury hotels from there to Playa Del Carmen, where they were more discretely hidden by high walls and gates. Into Cancun by 3 and as suggested by other travellers online I walked out to the street and got a cab for 79 pesos to the Ferry. Ultramar, fast catamarans shuffling thousands of tourists to Isla Mujeres daily $400 pesos one way! But on arrival I navigated the flat streets in intense heat to the Selina hostel. Packed with people for the Easter weekend, but i chose the pricier 4 bed dorm and had it to myself for 2 nights. Typical hostel, euro youth glued to phones, tecno blaring at the bar and dirty pool, and strobe lights slicing the night . Had a big kitchen and i cooked food I bought at Chedraui(by bus). Food was 25%c cheaper than in Puerto. 3 blocks to North beach, a lovely white sand stretch with a zillion pay to sit loungers. I found shade by a fence and swam repeatedly in warm blue water. Very nice! I did walk the promenade, saw the places I,d been to before, and would still recomend the island as a stop for swimming. Wildly overpacked with souvenir stalls and restaurants and the streets are dangerous with hundreds of golf carts rented by oblivious gringos. The uproar dies down somewhat when the last ferry goes a t 9 pm. It wa a 3 day stop for me to make my Westjet flight back to Vancouver.
The usual route to the airport, way out of town was to taxi to the ADO station and take their shuttle. I,d met Amber (Vancouver) at the hostel and she suggested Uber. Well, that was easy, cheaper, and way faster. Westjet was efficient, my papers were in order, and I finally had a cold drink at inflated airport prices. 4 hour wait, and I got anxious when the flight was not posted, so I went looking, found a mass of canadians ready to board. Boeing(bolts?)dreamliner fully packed, 6 hours to Yvr, arriving just as the last skytrain left, I went to the mezzanine and unpacked my sport seats, chained my bags after checking with security, and flopped in the cold for 4 hours. Sleep? More like unconciuosness, but better than a $200 hotel for 4 hours.
6 am Canada line to downtown, bus to Horseshoe bay, taxi to Shannon and Spensers house for 4 hours of sleep, a hot shower, and relax. Kids came home, life ramped up, and i stayed 2 days. Costco , helped Spenser with maintenance in Parksville and on the 2 30 ferry for pickup by buddy Wayne. True the pipes leak, and it,s bloody cold(6degrees) but the sun came out, the sheep have lambs and It,s Spring! First geese went north ,a taliman sign for me, and I,m happy to be home.
Next blog.. life on the rock....See ya!

8 Essential Vancouver Experiences to Add to Your Itinerary
Tumblr media
Vancouver is always ranked as one of the top cities to go to in North America. When making plans a trip to this scenic coastal city, it is critical to encompass studies that simply show off what makes Vancouver so special. From stunning coastal views to a dynamic cultural scene, Vancouver has much to explore. However, with limited time to experience all it has to offer, it's important to prioritize what you can't miss.
In this blog, we'll cover 8 essential Vancouver experiences that should be at the top of your itinerary. Ranging from outdoor adventures to cultural attractions, these selected spots will give you a well-rounded introduction to the best of what Vancouver has to offer.
Whether you're a foodie, nature lover, or city explorer, you'll find something in this list to inspire your visit.
Granville Island
Granville Island is a vibrant urban oasis just off downtown Vancouver. Visiting Granville Island is one of the top things to do in Vancouver. Formerly an industrial area, it is now home to public markets, artisan shops, cafes, and theatres. Don't miss the Granville Island Public Market, where you can sample foods from around the world and locally-sourced ingredients.
Browse the stalls of craft vendors at the Granville Island Artisan Market. Wander the covered walkways and take in street performers. Also check out the Kids' Market for interactive arts activities. Be sure to stop by the Granville Island Brewing taps for a tasting of their award-winning beers. As one of Vancouver's most popular tourist attractions, Granville Island is a must-visit for its unique atmosphere and top things to do.
Stanley Park:-
Spanning over 1,000 acres in the heart of Vancouver, Stanley Park offers a lush coastal rainforest and scenic seawall trails. Wander along the paths amongst the old-growth trees and discover beaches, picturesque ponds and dramatic views of the city skyline. Don't miss the iconic Totem Poles depicting Native American legends.
After a day exploring this iconic urban escape, rest your head at the Grand Park Hotel Vancouver Airport. In close proximity to the park and YVR airport, this hotel provides an ideal base to relax before or after experiencing everything Stanley Park has to offer. With onsite dining and an indoor pool, it's the perfect spot to unwind near this famous Vancouver landmark.
Canada Place:-
Standing tall on the north shore of Burrard Inlet, Canada Place is one of Vancouver's most iconic landmarks. From its viewing platforms and outdoor observation decks, you can take in stunning panoramic views of the harbor, North Shore mountains and downtown skyline. Don't miss a visit to the Celestial Observatory for a unique perspective on the stars in the night sky.
While there, check out displays on the cruise ship industry at North America's busiest terminal. Afterwards, fuel up nearby at one of the city's top-rated restaurants like Fisherman's Terrace, serving local seafood catches. Canada Place is a don't-miss spot for breathtaking vistas of Vancouver's scenic waterfront.
False Creek:-
Once an industrial area, False Creek has been transformed into a vibrant waterfront neighborhood through redevelopment. Take a walk or bike ride along the seawall trails with views of the downtown skyline. Check out the public markets, parks and cafes lining the shores.
The neighborhood of Granville Island offers artistic shops and theaters. After exploring, rest at one of the convenient Vancouver Airport Hotels near False Creek. The Fairmont Vancouver Airport and Executive Hotel Vancouver Airport are both a short drive from the creek, providing comfortable rooms and an ideal base for accessing more of nearby attractions. Their central location makes it easy to experience more of this revitalized area.
Olympic Village:-
The Olympic Village was built as athlete housing for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and has since been transformed into a lively mixed-use waterfront neighborhood. Take a stroll along Southeast Marine Drive for views of the North Shore mountains across the water. Stop to relax in Medal Plaza, site of the 2010 medal ceremonies.
Browse the local shops and restaurants that have moved into the brightly colored townhomes and high-rise condominium buildings. Art murals and sculptures depicting sports themes pay homage to the area's Olympic legacy. The Village gives glimpses into athlete life during the Games and now bustles as one of Vancouver's trendiest up-and-coming places to live.
Yaletown
Once an industrial area and now one of Vancouver's most vibrant neighborhoods, Yaletown is located just south of downtown. Wander the pedestrian-friendly streets lined with boutique shops, brewpubs, cafes and restaurants. Discover intimately-sized art galleries and stop to people watch from the parks and patio seating.
On weekends, the area is bustling with street performers and outdoor markets. Its warehouse past is reflected in the brick buildings that now house lofts and condominiums. Yaletown has become one of the most sought after places to live in Vancouver with its ideal location amidst the buzz of the city center.
Science World:-
Nestled along False Creek, Science World is an interactive science center that offers fun and education for visitors of all ages. Explore various exhibits that delve into subjects ranging from outer space to the human body. Learn about physics principles in the MacroLab or watch 3D movie screenings in the digital planetarium dome.
Temporary exhibitions are regularly brought in to complement the core displays. Don’t miss the giant heart on the exterior of the building or the sights from the viewing pods. Science World provides a unique way to spend a day discovering the wonders of science while taking in scenic views of downtown Vancouver.
Vancouver Canucks:-
Catching a Canucks game is one of the top things to do in Vancouver. The city is obsessed with its NHL hockey team. It's must-see entertainment to take in the action and energy of the loud Rogers Arena crowd. Join Canucks fans as they cheer on hometown favorites like J.T. Miller.
Take in the pre-game skating of the freakishly trained players on the green ice. Afterwards, continue a night on the town by grabbing pints and elevated pub fare at one of the Gastown restaurants swirling around the rink, like Tap & Barrel. Witnessing the Canucks live creates lasting memories of experiencing Vancouver's rich sports culture.
Conclusion
We hope this list of top Vancouver experiences has given you plenty of inspiration to build an exciting itinerary during your upcoming visit. Be sure to leave enough time to fully enjoy each activity without feeling rushed. And don't forget to plan some relaxation time back at your hotel in between adventures!
