The Threesome (dir. Chad Hartigan)
Rising stars Zoey Deutch, Jonah Hauer-King, and Ruby Cruz lead the offbeat indie romantic comedy about the titular group sex act that the trio of characters participate in, which leads to disastrous results for all of their relationships. How the increasingly complicated plot developments are revealed allows the stars to stretch their acting chops to maintain the delicate rom-com-type hijinks, but there is one too many unbelievable twists designed to complicate the three's romantic feelings. Still, the performances remain genuine and likeable despite leaping to extend our ideals of unconventional families.

The Roses (dir. Jay Roach).
Two of America's favourite Brit actors, Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, star as a high-performing but deeply troubled English couple living in Northern California who grow to resent one another after years putting themselves second. There's plenty of fun, particularly from Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon as their dysfunctional best American friends, but The War of the Roses remake goes to crazy extremes to express just how much this truly awful couple love and hate each other. Roach and screenwriter Tony McNamara trade the original novel and 1989 film's trademark satirical venom for a caustic Britishness.

Relay (dir. David McKenzie).
[The film] is an old-fashioned throwback to late twentieth-century paranoia born from the then-burgeoning surveillance technology. Its reflection of our corrupt, corporate-driven society only draws out the film's suspense even more.

Highest 2 Lowest (dir. Spike Lee).
Lee and [Denzel] Washington's upbeat redo of the classic moral tale of class, capitalism, wealth, and ego is an exciting but tricky experience. When its energy is high, the film's verve soars, but it skips when the impossible situations depicted struggle to resolve narratively in tidy ways.

Nerdstalgic x "Is Big Tech Destroying Hollywood?"
If it wasn’t obvious already, Hollywood is in crisis. While the box office still churns out millions thanks to endless remakes, reboots, and legacy sequels, the industry itself is shrinking.

Honey, Don't! (dirs. Ethan Coen & Tricia Cooke).
Margaret Qualley and Aubrey Plaza star in the second of the husband-and-wife duo's ongoing B-movie series of lesbian crime caper comedies. Set in dusty Bakersfield, California, a sassy but loose private detective yarn unfolds involving disparate corrupt town elements, including a no-good Chris Evans' sleazy, drug-dealing cult leader and various other traumatic peculiarities. What sets things back is the inconsistency of its disconnected parts, from absurd sex comedy to conspiracy drama and private eye mystery. There's not exactly a solid throughline to its mishmash of pulpy genres despite some fun performances throughout.

Disney's The Lion King x Queen Elizabeth Theatre x Downtown. (via Matthew Murphy)
Broadway Across Canada brings the animated classic to the stage through inventive costuming, production design, and puppetry. Audiences are brought into the classic story of the king's vengeful brother with all sorts of African animals and creatures as our singing characters. It's an exhilarating production that's just as creative and original as it was in animated form.
Darnell Abraham as Mufasa.
Running live on stage until Sept. 14.
