Despina Hatun In Fiction I
ZABINA
Tumblr media
The earliest work of fiction, other than some verbal legends about the aftermath of the Battle of Ankara is " Tamburlaine the Great " by English dramatist; Christopher Marlowe ( 1564-1593 ).
The play published in 1590, which focuses mainly on Timur and the brutality of conquests, also includes side characters like Bayezid I and Zabina; who are heavily based on the real Sultan Bayezid and Olivera Despina Hatun ( Zabina ).
Zabina, the Empress of Turkey and wife of Bayezid is captured with her husband by Timur and forced to endure humiliation as well as abuse. In the end, Bayezid could not bear it anymore and bashed his head on the golden cage he was forced into with his wife, brutally ending his life.
Heartbroken by the humiliation bestowed on her husband and his tragic death, Zabina then does the same, following her husband's actions, and ending her own life in the end.
This play is clearly a dramatized tale of the actual events that took place during the couple's captivity. However, there are a few things the play got right and wrong, such as the tragic ending of Bayezid. His reason for ending his life was the humiliation Despina Hatun had to endure. ( I believe he knew if he died the abuse towards her would end and she like the other Serbs captured on the Battlefield would be released. )
Though Zabina died, Olivera did not. Timurid sources state that she was released and sent back to her home in Bursa, where it will be assumed she attended her husband's funeral in the company of her stepson; Musa, who was also in captivity with them.
But then again historical fictions care little for accuracy.
Adding on, Franchelle Stewart looks fab in that full attire 🫶👑

FIRED CLAY BRICK; formerly part of a palace. Nebuchadnezzar II, the one who built the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, had his name in cuneiform stamped on every single brick, to emphasize that he had built it.
But out of the many thousands of bricks that bore his name and message, the one that remains is the one that a worker similarly carved his name, Zabina, into the brick before it dried.

Zabina: Why wont my human let me jump into their water cup?? Makes no sense. I will now climb all over the desk and pout.
Literally had to save her from herself after she was hanging out on my keyboard and decided the next logical step was to fling herself onto the edge of my mug of water. I coaxed her onto something I had laying around and then set her on another part of the desk until I had to help her back to the windowsill because she couldnt make the jump back over.

Part I | Part II | Part III
Antiochus Epiphanes & Alexander II Zabinas
In 128 BCE, Syria rose in revolt against the hated regime of Demetrius II (see Part III, above). His wife, Cleopatra Thea, put a young son on the throne, seeking popular favor. The identity of the child and his fate are disputed; Seleucid royals were often named “Antiochus”, and even his epithet on the coinage, Epiphanes (“illustrious”), was frequently recycled. Rare tetradrachms[1] of this brief reign show “a very pretty child, with chubby cheeks, double chin, and a slight smile (Houghton, 436).” A standing figure of Tyche, Antioch’s patron goddess, appears on the reverse.

Wikipedia article of the day for January 19, 2021
Tumblr media
The Wikipedia article of the day for January 19, 2021 is Alexander II Zabinas. Alexander II Zabinas (c. 150 BC – 123 BC) was a Seleucid monarch of the Hellenistic period who reigned as King of Syria between 128 BC and 123 BC. Most historians, ancient and modern, maintain that he was a pretender to the throne, although his coinage suggests that he claimed descent from Antiochus IV (died 164 BC), the brother of King Seleucus IV (died 175 BC). Descendants of both brothers were contending for the throne. In 128 BC, King Demetrius II of Syria, the representative of Seleucus IV's line, invaded Egypt to support his mother-in-law Cleopatra II in a civil war. Demetrius was killed while trying to find refuge in the city of Tyre, and Alexander II became the master of the kingdom. Egypt's Ptolemy VIII did not want a strong king on the Syrian throne, and in 124 BC an alliance was established between Egypt and Cleopatra Thea, ruling jointly with Antiochus VIII, her son by Demetrius II. Alexander II was defeated and was probably executed by Antiochus VIII.

Well... 2020 has come with a lot of twists and turns and honestly... the least expected for me is the fact that I accidentally acquired a “pet” spider...
I myself have an EXTREME fear of spiders... like... I have had to call friends to come over to my apartment to remove spiders for me because I cant. Well this year I moved into my own apartment for the first time. So no one is there to save me when tiny multi-legged critters show up, Im also in a basement so they tend to show up a lot. One way I help myself with these fears is to give things names, so I decided to call this little spider Zabina, after the beloved pet of a drow npc in the D&D game I currently dm.
I more or less expected that to be the last I saw of the little spider, we’d leave each other alone and that would be that. She had other plans. Ive found myself basically owning a 2cm cat that LOVES to inspect my desk and climb all over my laptop. So welcome to Zabina’s blog, where I will be posting her weird tiny adventures (aka all the times I have to put a lot of effort into not letting this spider die from her own foolishness)
Enjoy.
(Hopefully I’ll be able to get an actual macro lens for my phone soon, but until then I apologize in advance for the photo quality.)
