i’ve listened to everything twice (i tried to open my eyes at 6am to listen but nope. so i listened on my way to work at 8 😌)

i wanna start off by saying this gave me nct127 2baddies (the b-sides obvi not the title) and nct dream vibes in the BEST WAY. some of it also reminded me of the softer side of skz and also felt seventeen-influenced. basically… i love it and i think the sound was really well-curated especially in such a short period of time!!

fantastic choice for the single. somehow i think w1 managed to get this really right. bright, fun, catchy, floral, youthful… while also maintaining a pretty mature sound. i’m very impressed and i think it’s the perfect jumping-off point for zb1 that will manage to attract casual listeners too— which is exactly what any freshly debuted group needs.

this is a really great song too. i think they could actually promote this as a second single after in bloom and it would do quite well. this has one of those choruses where there’s an upwards note progression that feels emotional and like hits in the heart for some reason? it’s SO good. will probably be a 5/5 for me in a couple days. it’s actually sort of a shame it’s forced to a b-side!!

LOVE that kid fr he makes me cringe in the best way.

honestly a solid intro song. unfortunately not one you’d just randomly throw on bc you want to hear it, but it definitely serves its function and it’s not just annoying instrumental laced together (i’m looking at you tnx love or die— great album tho)

New Kidz On The Block: ✮ ✮ ⭒

i’m just gonna say it: this song is not that good. and it sticks out when comparing it to the rest of the album. it’s not really thematically fitting in with everything else musically and i think new kidz on the block thing is a little too gimmicky and immature for zb1– especially when they came out swinging with in bloom. HOWEVER every debut album and… i actually think every album is allowed to have one song that’s just the fall-guy. and nkotb is that. and i will definitely be singing it nonstop by next week!! that’s just how it goes isn’t it!?

overall: vocals are fantastic. choreo of in bloom is super catchy and recognisable so that’s super smart of them. and i think they knocked it out of the park!

is it the *best* bg debut this year?? 👀 i won’t discuss that for now (but i think objectively— and i usually only think objectively bc i’m a T— boynextdoor and zb1 will be battling it out pretty viciously for roty). i’m SO proud of them and love them so, so much. they’re just starting their journey and they’ve already broken a bunch of records!! catch me crying for the next 2.5 years 😍💕

Alright one final ask from me about Enhypen. Are you active in their fandom? It’s hard for me to imagine you as another kind of fan cos you’re so ARMY-coded. If you’re active as an Engene, what is your experience like? How does it compare to being an ARMY?

Yeah I’m active. A couple of my friends are hardcore Engenes so I can rely on them to get me up to speed while I float in and out of the fandom when I like.

Lately, I enjoy my time far more in their fandom and in my ARMY Twitter space (which I’ve curated), than in ARMY spaces on other platforms including Tumblr. There’s less braindead discourse for one thing. All Engenes have been talking about for the last week, is how amazing the new album is going to be, arguing about what the songs could sound like, who would do what part or what the choreography will look like. People are making full out instrumentals just based on the teasers and mood samplers. Theorists are also hard at work wondering if Sohee is the innocent victim they thought she is, when it’s possible she’s the reason they’re vampires to begin with. I’ve seen more people commenting on how incredible their vocals are just based on the teaser sound clips, than anyone worrying about anything else. Etc.

There’s chatter here and there about charts and voting for this or that, but that’s typical for all k-pop fandoms. I vote for the group when I feel like it and when I do my usual BTS voting.

One of the members, Jake, is actually having his birthday today, so it’s been laughs and giggles on my TL all day because he’s one of the funnier members in the group, and the other members kinda love trolling him (not as much as they do Jay though).

The Engene fandom also has their fair share of akgaes - this is a sort of ‘legacy attribute’ from when the group was being formed on I-land and each member had to be voted in or otherwise individually selected. But most of those akgaes are people from Big3 fandoms who have moved on to other survivor show groups (eg ZB1), so the wider Engene fandom knows how to recognize and treat them, and the focus is instead placed on the group as a whole. Another major difference is there’s significantly bigger participation from Japanese k-pop fans within the Engene fandom because of Ni-ki. So the Japanese translation accounts and fanbases are often just as big as the Korean ones.

I also enjoy spending time with Jaywon stans and shippers because they’re chill and fun, kinda like how jikook shipping spaces used to be until about a year ago.

Overall, it’s a fun space to be. Occasionally you see the weirdos who are genuinely in love with the members and possibly running batteries down in the middle of the night while reading their fics, or the akgaes who have zero sense of boundaries and live out their insecurities through the members, but most people are pretty fun, chill, and passionate in all the best ways about loving those seven guys.

My top kpop albums of 2023

This year I've actually listened through more albums than probably ever. I actively chose to check out more than just my top favorite artists albums and it definitely was a great thing to do as I did find some great b-sides. However, that doesn't mean I actually would've liked all the songs enough for all of the albums to make it to the list. So, here are the ones that I liked multiple songs of or perhaps even the whole album.

INFINITE - 13egin Album of the year? Not unfair thing to say. Just the fact that Infinite came back is huge to me but I genuinely do like all the songs. Surprisingly the intro is the weakest link on the album, as traditionally I've loved Infinite intros. Despite that the highs are high enough to forgive that. New Emotions was unarguably my most listened song of the year and Time Difference wasn't too far behind. I Got You and Find Me are lovely too and I love my instrumental versions. It really is a great album.

Key - Killer - The 2nd Album Repackage I mean I had Gasoline up in this list last year and this is just Gasoline with Killer (Key's best song to date), Easy (that I also really like) and Heartless added to it, so it does belong here, doesn't it? Also, the fact that I do have this album now probably tells all that needs to be told.

TRENDZ - BLUE SET Chapter. New Dayz This one has the short length on its side, as it's a single album. However, the songs are top notch, so I can't ignore it. Nightmare is illegally good to be just an intro. Fantasy is incredible. Honestly the title track New Dayz is the least my thing but even that is a great song, and if it hadn't been I wouldn't have check the whole album. The thing with TRENDZ seems to be that they like to put rap parts at the end of the songs, which I have to say I don't really like, but these songs are too good that I could even fault that enough to not mention this album.

ZEROBASEONE - Melting point Melting Point, Crush and Take My Hand have been in heavy rotation recently. But the rest of the album is also good enough for me to be able to confidently mention the album here.

IVE - I'VE MINE This is such a solid album. No wonder why they couldn't pick only one song to promote. Next to the title tracks I really enjoy Holy Moly. It is sooo addicting! OTT also ended up getting in my IVE playlist so that's surely a nice one too. Only Payback wasn't quite for me even though it's pretty good one too.

ONEUS - Pygmalion & La Dolce Vita I have to mention ONEUS, don't I? I do have to be honest and say that the albums this year haven't been as big hits with me as the previous ones. And that is so so unfortunate as I love ONEUS. I just have to hope that next year brings more songs for me to love from ONEUS. Just the length of the albums is disappointing - LDV having only 3 full length unique songs. Of the songs on these two albums: Unforgettable is absolutely lovely, LETHE is illegally good to be an intro and Baila Conmigo is so so catchy, a perfect title track. The rest of the songs are nice but not to the level I hope from them. Truly hoping next year to be a better ONEUS year for me.

Honorable mentions:

SHINee - HARD HARD is such a mix for me as a full album. I absolutely adore Identity, Sweet Misery and Like It, truly the SHINee that I want and need. 10X, Satellite and Insomnia are great songs, as expected from SHINee, but they were heavily overshadowed by the three mentioned before. Then we had The Feeling and Gravity that didn't do much for me. And then there are HARD and Juice... Just no. So, I guess this leaves the album as an honorable mention even though I wanted it to be a genuine favorite of the year. Big hits but also unfortunately couple of big misses that I can't ignore.

ZEROBASEONE - Youth in the shadow In Bloom and New Kids On The Block are hanging out in my often played ZB1 playlist, so I couldn't leave this album unmentioned.

ODD EYE CIRCLE - Version Up Very solid album, all the songs are good. I just personally didn't listen to the others as much as Air Force One despite them being good. Hence, only an honorable mention.

KEY - Good&Great Another great album from Key this year. Just again one song heavily overshadowed the others and I did not really end up listening to the others after the first listen. The one overshadowing others was Live Without You, one of the best songs of the year.

VIXX - Amnesia VIXX IS BACK!! Honestly at some point I was pretty certain that it wouldn't happen, but I'm happy I was wrong. Savage is such a vibe and Amnesia is very cool title track. The rest don't do much for me again, but honorable mention is definitely earned.

fromis_9 - Unlock My World Again, a very solid album. Attitude is the only song I ended up going back to and really liking. I'm happy it got some performances too. #menow is a solid title track from them. Of the rest of the b-sides In The Mirror, Prom Night, Don’t Care and What I Want are solid songs and the rest are also good but don't do much for me.

Nam Woohyun - WHITREE Lastly, I just have to mention Woohyun. I was being harsh on Baby Baby, but seeing him perform it... How can I say no to cutie-concept Woohyun? Nope, there is no way. I can't. The album is also very Woohyun. For the most part it just isn't quite for me. But then there is Save Us, which is great! And then there is DONE, which is amazing! Honestly, just having him here making music despite the recent hardships he has had is so respectable and incredible. And DONE making it to my top 15 favorite songs of the year is truly making me so happy.

My thoughts about NCT Tokyo (long post)

Preface/disclaimer - no hate to anyone mentiomed at all, there's no hate mentioned at all i just have to be safe. I just simply think too much about logistics and I need a place to put everything. I also have not kept up to date with NCT Tokyo at all, I only know their names and that they're debuting towards the end of the year? Or early next year? I also don't know the details of the legal issues with SM and if that's impacted their recent decisions with NCT. I haven't listen to Riize at all either, I don't know their names, only SungTaro. So take everything with a pinch of salt I guess.

1. Initial thoughts

I'm okay with NCT Tokyo, I'm okay with them being an NCT subunit I'm okay with their ages roughly, I'll most likely get as into them as I am with the rest of NCT once they debut. But ultimately my interest in kpop groups factors in the music as the *biggest* reason, so if they end up having music I don't like then I might not get into them that much (doubt it, I think they'll have good music) but I do plan to support them wholeheartedly.

I know their ages are a contention, but they're 5th gen after all and most of the new 5th gen groups seem to be in around the same age brackets. ZB1 has obviously taken off and we all love Yujin and he's the same age as the youngest Tokyo member I think?? NCT as a full group don't really interact as often as a subunit does, so having their whole unit be the same age bracket is fine. It's not like the eldest members of NCT are directly in the same subunit.

2. Golden Age

I like Golden Age its a good album its got great songs. I do have my own issues with the album and one of which is that I think it could've been a good way to introduce NCT Tokyo into NCT. A tie in album, where they get to debut in NCT and then later on they debut as the Tokyo sub unit. So personally I think maybe Golden Age should've been released much later than it was, so we could all get used to Tokyo and familiar enough that we want to see them on the album. Golden Age is obviously a mini rebrand for NCT, it's setting out the expectations for their new era, so having Tokyo included could've been really cool for that. Tokyo feels very separated from NCT at the moment so participating in Golden Age, even just only being on the all member song, could've really helped them to feel like part of the group right off the bat.

3. What would I have done?

Put the hypothetical hat on. Put it on, strap it on, you've got this, just think about it. Hypothetically if I was in charge of making the sub unit decisions, and I'm thinking like SM here, this is what I would've done. Firstly, keep Sungchan and Shotaro in NCT. Debut Riize as the sub unit NCT Riize this year (same time as their real debut ig) and have them be the 5th gen part of NCT as their concept? So now in 2023 we have NCT Riize as a subunit, at the same time SM has Tokyo in Rookies or their survival show, in the basement I dunno where they keep trainees.

Then, in a couple years (2-3) time we debut NCT Tokyo, and we add in either just Shotaro, or Sungchan and Shotaro (I know we like the "keep them together" policy) because that way we can tie in Tokyo to the rest of NCT. Debuting these existing trainees in a few years would also get rid of age hang ups as the youngest would be around 18. Shotaro as a Japanese member would not only fit the Tokyo concept, but would probably provide some comfort to these young kids who are going to need some familiarity at the start.

Could this member tie in have been done with Yuta if Riize isn't in NCT? No, I don't think so, Yuta being so much older than Tokyo would offset the vibes and the concept, whereas Shotaro isn't older than all of them completely by a wide gap. So ultimately have Shotaro act as a Mark & Haechan situation, obviously there's issues about overworking members but SM clearly has no issues with having Mark in all of their groups to ever exist so why would they have an issue with someone else doing the same thing. Clearly separating Riize and Tokyo comebacks/schedules would help too, so Shotaro isn't dead in the group 6 months in (cough cough not looking at the 127 comeback announcement made the day after Golden Age was released)

Adding 2 new sub units would also keep SM happy as they always wanted that Big Group thing going on, they've gotten rid of the limitless expansion but adding 2 new sub units doesn't ruin that. The group all together would have like 34 members or something similar,,, that's Not *too* bad, I could do that. Obviously it's going to be harder for new people to get into a group that large but the rest of us managed it with 20+ members. Are you telling me you don't know more than 30 people in you're life? I'm sure you've gone to school with more than 30 people and remembered their names well enough to get around.

5. Music

Honestly I don't really have any expectations for Tokyo's music. I'd imagine they stick the that new sound of 5th gen, and tie in the 'noise' music of NCT. I hope their sound is unique enough to stand out as a sub unit though; WayV obviously sounds like NCT but they also don't in the same way that 127 and Dream have overlap. So I'd like Tokyo to have their own distinct music genres which you wouldn't necessarily find in a 127 song etc. Or Riize for that matter, I hope they don't sound like Riize at all, because I think the last thing they need is to be compared to Riize this early on in their careers.

I don't know if it's been said that their songs will be in Japanese, but if they are then it poses a small issue for me? I've found that I don't particularly enjoy Japanese kpop songs as much, I didn't catch onto &Team as much as I thought I did, I don't listen to Japanese versions of Seventeen or Ateez songs. However as a counter point to this, I do very much enjoy the Japanese albums NCT 127 have done and I listen to them very regularly so if Tokyo is in the same ballpark then I think I would enjoy their songs in Japanese. I am a WayV ult stan at the end of the day, I have no issue with non Korean language kpop songs, and I listen to much more Japanese music outside of the kpop genre (shout out to Survive Said The Prophet i luv u).

Regular (huh?). Do we want another version of Regular? I do, I want a Japanese version to tie it all in, to have that whole NCT spin on things. It's another way to integrate them in and make Tokyo *feel* like NCT. It would be weird without Winwin because he's on all the other versions but that's not an issue I just like to think about it and giggle. Regular as their debut song however? No. Not even on their debut album. Release it as a single, or on a later release further down the line. I can wait for Regular Japanese version, I don't need it any time soon. I just think it'll be good to have in the roster at some point. Who knows, maybe it'll dethrone the WayV/Chinese version as my favourite?
