Oh to be the honest and true rapscallion half of a charming love shared between an uptight imperial and their respective alien counterpart

Long ago on a server far far away...
Some fandom history and a humorous observation about SWR pairings.
Before portmanteaus--the blending of characters’ names to make a ship name--became a Thing in fandom, we used to write the pairings as Character A/Character B (where the term “slash” comes from), or Character A x Character B.
Back in those days, the placement of the characters’ names in the equation (because it really is a math expression, funnily enough) also mattered because it was an indication of which character was “topping” the other. For example, Zeb/Kallus would mean Zeb is the “dominant” one and Kallus is the “submissive” one--a concept which, by today’s standards, is flawed due to its sexist/sizeist/ageist/etc implications, but back then not many people seemed to mind or care. This was especially true in anime fandoms, of which I was a part in the late 90s and early 00s. The top would always come first (sometimes both literally and figuratively) 😆
These days pairing names are more generalized, left to assumption or popular convention. Like Kalluzeb: you know it’s Zeb and Kallus, but you don’t know who’s topping whom unless the author explicitly states something like top!Kallus and bottom!Zeb. I think most of us assume Zeb is the top, but there is no indication of that in the ship name. It also sounds better than Zebkallu, and I think that’s what counts more when creating a ship name. How well it rolls off the tongue... and if you can keep a straight face while saying it.
Side note: the Japanese portmanteau for Kanan/Ezra is Keiezu (ケイエズ), which I think is a real glowup compared to the English version. Thanks to @baka-bun for pointing that out to me!
But sometimes The Old Thinking will revisit back to me, and I look at a pairing name like Sabezra (or see Sabine/Ezra in a fic summary), and all I can think of is Sabine strapping on a massive dong and pegging the living Force out of Ezra, even though that’s 99.99999% not likely the case 😂
Still,
