15- What WIP are you taking into next year with you?

Oh tons, as ever, but shout outs to the Barney/Olive wip and the still unnamed Eric Marshall Loses Everything story.

29- Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

I honestly have a bunch of favorite passages from Ties, but have one of them. From just before Valancy and Barney go into Port Lawrence to buy Zeke birthday presents:

Barney found her in the garden the next day, one of John Foster's books in hand, looking intently at the wildflowers creeping into Cissy's beds.

"If you're looking to become a naturalist, that man won't help you a bit," he said, hopping down from Lady Jane. Barney never bothered to hide his disdain for John Foster; Valancy had mostly given up trying to change his opinion. "I don't have any other books that would help," Valancy said, but she closed the book and slipped it into the pocket of her apron. "What are you trying to do, anyway?" he wanted to know. "You know all the flowers in that garden as well as anyone." "I was trying to see which were related to each other," she said. "John Foster says—" "I'm sorry I asked," Barney said hurriedly, and she shot him a look. "I wasn't going to read you the entire passage, but if you're going to behave like that I shall," she said, and he raised his hands. "No, please. Paraphrase the man, I beg you."

I really enjoyed developing their rapport in that fic, letting them become friends and enjoy each other's company a little more gradually than in canon. And it's always fun to let Barney make fun of John Foster.

30- Biggest surprise while writing this year?

Honestly, writing anything publishable at all! This is the first year since 2019 I've actually written anything more than tiny snippets. Huge shoutout to the Blue Castle folks for being great and kick-starting my creativity!

“Emery, go call MC to come down for dinner.”

Her child had been cooped up in their room from the moment they arrived home. It was not the first time and not too unusual for someone studying at a prestigious school as Lumintoille. But this habit of theirs has gotten worse lately. Unless she sends Emery to distract them/call them down (drag them), they won’t budge from their seat.

*Sigh* She should have a talk with them.

It’s good to be studious, but they should be careful. Pushing their body to its limits could damage their health. She and Zeke would know.

(Author note” little does she know her child is worrying over a birthday gift for their girlfriend…)

Just as Emery is about to knock on his parent/sibling’s door, he hears some voice sounds. Not only his parent/sibling’s. Others too. Familiar voices. Family. His eyes lit up.

And just like that, he opens the door excitedly, barging in their room.

Are you talking with Big Brother Weylyn, Cooper and Big Sis Ophelia?

MC POV

They did not expect Emery barging into their room. But even if he knocked, would they have heard?

Probably not.

They were too focused on the topic of the group call, which they initiated. Asking for help was not their forte, nor their preferred option, buuuuuuuuut… they had to.

You see… Observing Fleur carefully everyday would result in her reprimanding them for staring too much. Mulling over the perfect gift for her yielded results… though not helpful ones considering the huge list their brain came up with. Then the anxiety from the overthinking on how she would like the gift crept over. It didn’t leave for months.

Dispersing the stray thoughts away, they smile softly: “Yes Emery. Come and greet them if you’d like.”

Emery rushes to their parent/sibling’s side and they lift him up to sit on their lap. He takes the phone from where MC left it earlier, thrilled to talk with Weylyn, Cooper and Ophelia.

“Hello! – he greets them, waving his free hand at the same time.

“Hi!” “Hello!” “Heyo!” – all three of them greet Emery at the same time.

“Well, MC, you didn’t like any of our ideas so maybe you should ask Emery for help” – Cooper suggests, grinning mischievously similarly to a Cheshire cat.

“Hmmm. Not a bad idea. So, buddy. What do you think we should prepare for Fleur’s birthday?”- They ask half-jokingly.

Big Sis Fleur’s BIRTHDAY?! Tomorrow?! Why didn’t you tell me, MC?! – Emery shouts at them with a pouting face.

All of four of them laugh. Emery, leaves the phone on the table and crosses his arms, still pouting. “Meanie.”

MC stops their laugh and apologizes: “Sorry. I forgot to tell you. But don't worry, her birthday is not tomorrow, I promise."

"When is her birthday then, MC?" - he asks. Pouting face vanished, replaced by an expression of curiosity, but still keeping his hands crossed.

Adorable

Thinking that, they chuckle and lean over to take their handmade desk calendar to show him.

"Here, Emery. Look at the marked date. 14 February (14 Blossom). That's when we celebrate and give our gifts to her."

"Can I give her a rose? Will she like it?"

"Of course. You can give her any gift and she will like it." - their girlfriend always had a soft spot for their son/sibling.

"What will you give her?" - Emery innocently asks, not knowing their struggles with picking a single gift for her.

"Why don't you help him with picking a gift Emery?" - Ophelia chimes in.

"Why not give her a rose too?"- a good idea but not one they preferred. They wanted to give her something more unique and memorable. Not something they could give her any da-

NAME: jude mortimer. previously zeke callahan. referred to as smiley by his dad and aunt. AGE: verse dependent; usually portrayed in his early thirties (main arc). born august 11th. IDENTITY: bisexual trans man (he/him). biromantic. began hormone therapy at 16, and got top surgery at 17. RESIDENCE: he has his own loft in seattle, washington, neighboring the woman he considers his aunt. however, he travels a lot for his job (tends to pick nicer hotels). LANGUAGES: thanks to his dad and aunt, he knows a lot of languages, but is fluent in english, asl, mandarin chinese, spanish, and russian. he can understand most of japanese, german, and italian, but can't speak or write them as well. OCCUPATION: he takes up odd jobs here and there, but his main sources of income derive from bounty hunting and being a hitman. he very much enjoys his jobs.

BACKSTORY ...

he grew up in a volatile house with two angry parents, often dreaming of running away or them dying in many ways so he wouldn't have to be with them anymore. in school, he was known as the violent clown, getting into plenty of fights and threatening classmates and teachers, all that would lead him to being expelled. his parents took it as an opportunity to move, though the real reason was jude's father owed people money they didn't have.

jude is 10 when the hit on his parents comes to fruition. he's suspended, so he's home from school, something the hitman missed. he comes down for a snack and ends up seeing the man looming over his parents, both sprawled on the ground. jude and the man have an oddly calm conversation, though the man is obviously tense. jude follows him, and long story short, the man takes him in, seeing no other option (the kid saw his face, could fuck everything up, and he doesn't want to kill the kid). they make it look like jude (not his name at the time) was kidnapped, change his name to zeke, and forge all the necessary documents.

the man refuses to let him even see so much as a knife, at first, but eventually caves and teaches jude everything he knows, seeing as how jude's now going to be in danger every day just because he knows the man. he leaves him with his sister after jude kills one of the teachers of the school he's going to when he's 13, and this is when his name is changed to jude mortimer (the man changing his own to kit mortimer). jude is pissed at being left behind, but becomes close with kit's sister, mina, and takes joy in creating art with her (though is always asking to go along with kit).

when jude turns 18, kit finally teaches him more about his occupation, and much to kit's and mina's dismay, jude quickly gains his own notoriety after taking on jobs on his own.

on jude's 22nd birthday, he and kit are out taking a walk when they're taken by enough surprise that it ends in kit's demise. jude learns there was a hit out on himself, but kit got in the way. (kit's last words to him are my son, something he never called jude [despite jude always calling him dad].) jude vows to find every last person who was involved in kit's murder, and he does just that. it takes a couple years of isolation, becoming colder, cutting off contact to mina, but he does it. after, he goes back to mina, falls to his knees and apologizes, crying for the first time since kit's death. this is also what pushes him into serial killing, taking out the worst of the worst of humanity for nothing other than the joy of it. (kit used to do that, on occassion, and mina never knew -- doesn't know about jude, either.)

his main arc follows him several years after he finishes the job of killing everyone involved in kit's murder. he has a canonical death that happens when he's forty-eight (48). he goes out with a bloody smile and a promise to meet up with kit.

SPARKNOTES ...

i can throw him and WILL throw him in just about any universe, including bg3, powered verse (marvel/dc adjacent), apocalyptic verses, etc.

KIT MORTIMER is the hitman that killed jude's parents and took him in. he will always be referred to as jude's dad. MINA WEI is kit's sister, and will always be referred to as jude's aunt.

he has Many scars, but the most noteable are the scar that runs diagonal across to each side of his left palm, and the stab wound scar on his abdomen to the left (courtesy of the night of his 22nd birthday; it's the only scar that still leaves him shaking, sometimes).

he's 6'2" and has a very athletic, fit build, often naturally lightly tan thanks to being outside so much + enjoying being outside as much as he can be. has eyebags that Never go away.

his accent often switches, sometimes mid sentence, and most of the time he doesn't realize it's happening.

he used to have his ears pierced several times, but the only piercing he still wears is his left double helix. he has a medium-sized tattoo, in white and red ink, of a lily flower, placed in the center of his back between his shoulder blades (his dad's favorite flower). he also has a snake in white ink wrapped around from just below his right elbow, up to his shoulder (his aunt's favorite animal and motif).

Wow. So I spent a week in Oregon with titi Nelle and Zeke. I had a wonderful and amazing time, and I missed you so much! You had lots of fun with dads and stayed with granny and pa for 2 nights, and I think overall it was really good for both of us. I got some perspective on how I am my own person still, in addition to being your mom. I think you got even closer to dada and it seems like you want him for certain things and want me for other things and that’s great and how it should be. A year ago, this would have crushed me because you were my whole world and everything I did revolved around you as the son and sun of my solar system. I love you more than I ever have and this trip was really important to realize that we can love each other more than ever and also love other people more than ever and also do things with other people and our connection is rock solid. You know I love you forever and always, no matter what and nothing can shake that. In your words “you’re my best.” You’ve been telling me I’m your best boy and I remind you that I’m a girl and so I think your solution has been to jokingly call me your best boy because it’s funny and you’re a jokester, or when you’re serious and sleepy, you just say “you’re my best.” But also make sure to say how dada and Bella and kreacher and granny and pa and jt and Ryan and auntie Koko are your best. You have lots of love and are so loved.

Okay, but I wanted to engrave the memory of you at the airport into my brain forever. I was so so so excited to see you and dada after a whole week so I was racing up the escalator, my heart beating so hard and just feeling so much love and happiness knowing I would see you any moment. We met up at baggage claim 3 and I think we kind of spotted each other at the same time. I took my mask off and smiled and the look on your face was filled with so much love I could have cried. You were smiling but also trying not to smile and maybe also trying not to cry, I’m guessing just because of the flood of emotions that happens when you see someone you love after time apart. I crouched down and put out my arms hoping you’d run to me and I heard dada say “go get her,” and you’re little prancing run to me was all goofy footed and gallopy. Once you got to me, I scooped you up and hugged you so tight and you just melted into me. You didn’t let go for definitely over a minute, maybe 2, so I walked over to dads and just kept squeezing you so big. Declan, you are my best. I hope you feel it in our hugs and gentleness together, and see it in the way I look at you. I hope you hear it in my voice and in your internal monologue and in these words I’m writing to you. My love for you is so big. You are just 2.5 at this point, and I already love the person you are becoming and whoever you will become. No matter what.

In other news, we went to two birthday parties yesterday. Alex (3) and auntie Koko. For auntie Koko, we went to dinner at poco loco, then went to see the Christmas light show at meadow event park. You did an amazing job at dinner, being so patient and waiting in our booth. You had chips and salsa and rice and ice cream. You colored and played with the curtains and made your elephant raspberry sound. Then you watched blaze after probably 45 minutes. Really solid work for your 4th time eating in a restaurant!

At the light show, you got to sit in my lap for maybe an hour and a half in the car while we waited our turn to drive through and then for the actual show. While waiting, you helped my drive by yanking the steering wheel side to side and pushing all the buttons to turn on the windshield wipers and whatever you could reach. Then we turned on your nursery rhymes songs and it was so much fun singing them so loud with granny, auntie Koko, Ryan, and JT. you maybe liked that even more than the lights. You know all the words in the abc song now and you were so proud to sing it with your family. You were dancing and laughing and just were such a joy. You stuck your feet out the window and thought that was so funny. I wouldn’t change a single second, 10/10 night.

You kept saying you wanted to go back (meaning you wanted to sit in my lap), and JT was talking in his amazing British accent saying “we’re on another path now, we are going home,” like he was your fairy godfather or animal guide. So funny.

We visited pa and granny today. It’s wild that someday your foot might be as big as his and right now they’re literally half the size.

This is how I take a shower and take my time getting ready these days. You LOVE paw patrol and are basically a zombie if they go on tv. When it’s time to turn it off you will be sad for a minute but then we move on to something else. It’s been a tough thing to find balance.

Your shirt with moose and new rain boots. Size 3t shirt is a bit snug and size 9 boots fit well. 3t pants are too short depending on the style, but too big around the waist so we have to cinch them down. This is you saying “cheese.”
