You know what I just realized is really fucked up about Spotify's decision to demonetize most of the tracks on their platform (aside from the fact that that alone is really fucked up to begin with)? You have to pay to get your songs on there in the first place*! And, on top of that, they already pay less than other streaming platforms: between 0.01¢ and 0.28¢ per stream, compared to 0.42¢ to 0.8¢ from Apple Music (and, yes, that is fractions of a cent, not a typo; streaming royalties are tiny). Just think about that. I had to pay $50 for the privilege of getting some pocket change from Spotify.
I'm tempted to say that I won't be uploading any of my future releases there, but I guess that kinda contradicts my previous post of, "I don't really care about the money. I just want people to be able to listen to my music." But, at the same time, I kinda don't see the point of paying them anymore. If I wanted to make my music widely available without making any money from it, I could just put it on SoundCloud and YouTube for free.
*To be fair, I didn't pay Spotify itself. To my knowledge, there's no way to upload your music directly to Spotify. You have to go through a distributor, and that's who I paid (CD Baby, in my case). But, I assume at least some of that money went to Spotify, as well as all the other streaming services they sent my song to. Bandcamp, on the other hand, is free; they just take a cut of your sales.

I don't mean, like, "Oh, woe is me! I only get half a cent when my music is played." More the opposite, actually. I shouldn't care about the money (and I don't, really). I should instead try and make my music more accessible.
Thinking of making all my music available under Creative Commons since it's not like I'm really making money from it anyway

Wait, did I never share the second version? Not sure why this WIP is suddenly getting notes when I finished it like 2 years ago...

Made some more progress on the melody, and also changed a couple instruments to better match the originals (they’re better matches, but I don’t think they’re 100% spot-on yet). Mostly, I’m stuck trying to figure out how to make the last part of “The Legend” sound more like “Hopes and Dreams”. It seems like it should fit well where the “Your Best Friend” leitmotif would go, but it’s in a different time signature.
It also doesn’t help that “The Legend” is a much shorter song than “Hopes and Dreams”. I’m thinking once I “convert” the rest of the song, I’ll just have it transition into normal “Hopes and Dreams”. Or maybe I’ll keep the original ending of “The Legend”. We’ll have to wait and see.
Also, another 5am upload, yay. I had the day off today, and I still ended up not starting on this until late at night. I’m grateful that my parents let me live with them rent-free, but it’s awfully hard to get into The Zone ™ when you’re frequently interrupted.

My latest single is now available on Bandcamp! Get it here first! It won't be available anywhere else until 12 July. It might just be my best song yet, if I may say so myself.

June 2023
Little late on this one, but still going to try and do monthly "reports". This one's going to be shorter, though.
Compared to May, I really didn't do much in terms of music. I've mostly been working on the other aspects of MONO: the story and the worldbuilding (and I do mean that literally—I've been teaching myself GIS software to make maps of MONO). But, this is my music blog, so let's talk about my music. What did I do last month?
Added more instruments to "POWER", the song that plays when you acquire a Legendary Artifact
Minor changes to "Boringsville at Night", including fixing the drums
Started writing down the melody for "Farm", the song that (surprisingly) plays when you're on the farm
Returned to "Snowy Pt. 1", a song I first wrote in 2020 and began to rewrite about a year ago. I finished writing the flute part, and I played around with adding some very low frequencies to make it extra unsettling.
Started rewriting "The Missing Piece", another song I first wrote in 2020. It's really dissonant in some places, and the drums I wrote don't really fit how I envision the song being used. Though, I'm not sure the new version will fit either, but at least it should be more pleasant to listen to.
And... that's about it. Anyway, here's another reminder that "Rhapsody for a Dying City" will be available on all streaming services next week, or you can listen to it now on Bandcamp. That's all for now. See you next month!

Just so you know, if you buy this (or any other song) on Bandcamp this Monday, they will donate 100% of their share of sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in honor of Juneteenth. This fundraiser lasts from midnight to midnight Pacific Time (UTC-7).
