How to Help End the Government Shutdown
Image by Carolyn Suzuki from her upcoming book “F is for Feminism“
I live in DC, so the ongoing U.S. government shutdown is pretty much all people talk about these days. 800,000 federal government workers across the country have been scrambling to make ends meet since the shutdown began on December 21. Some are furloughed, meaning they are legally prohibited from working during the shutdown, while those deemed essential (like TSA employees) are working without pay. This Friday they will all miss their second paycheck. My husband is a federal employee at a fully funded agency, so we’re thankfully okay. But many of our friends and neighbors are affected, and I know the shutdown is impacting thousands more outside the DC area. So, I’m curious: are you affected by the U.S. government shutdown? Do you know anyone who is? Maybe you have a friend or family member that works for a U.S. government agency and has either been furloughed or is required to work without pay. Or you know a first time homeowner trying to get an FHA loan. Or there are small businesses in your area waiting for inspections or licenses from USG agencies.
Food inspections, airplane inspections, small business licensing, counterterrorism investigations, Coast Guard operations – these are critical government functions that have been impacted by the shutdown. I think we can all agree that we’d like the government to reopen so federal employees can either get back to work or get paid for the work they’re currently doing. If you’d like to help end the government shutdown, you can join the National Call Day taking place across the country TODAY to put pressure on the Senate to reopen the government.
To reopen the government, Congress (both the House of Representatives and the Senate) have to pass bills funding the government, and the President has to sign the bill – or Congress has to override the President with a 2/3 majority. Only Congress can authorize funding, so while the President can make demands, it’s up to Congress to decide what it wants to fund. When the new session of Congress opened on January 3, the House passed a bill that would fund the government without border wall funding, but Mitch McConnell has refused to allow a Senate vote – despite being a co-equal branch of government with enough votes to override Trump’s veto if needed.
CONTACT YOUR SENATORS TODAY!
On Thursday, the Senate will vote on two opposing funding bills that would reopen the government. One proposed by the White House, the other proposed by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. The White House bill includes the $5.7 billion for construction of a permanent wall and would also impose serious restrictions on asylum petitions for Central American migrants, including limiting the number of people that can apply for asylum and an outright ban on asylum for Central American minors presenting themselves at the border. Those migrants would be automatically returned to their country of origin WITHOUT an asylum hearing. It would also expand immigrant jail beds by 20%, meaning the Trump administration would have extra capacity to detain families seeking asylum in the United States. The White House proposal claims to extend DACA, but instead it replaces DACA with an entirely new program that is far more restrictive, excluding Dreamers who would be eligible for or even in DACA now. The bill from Minority Leader Schumer is a continuing resolution (CR) that would fund the government through February 8 with NO wall funding. It’s a temporary fix, but it would allow government workers to get paid and/or go back to work while negotiations continue.
We need to put pressure on the Senate to vote in favor of the clean CR. You can look up the address and phone number for your two senators here or on 5Calls.org. It’s particularly important to contact your senators if you live in a state with Republican senators, but it’s a good idea to contact Democratic senators, too. You can email your senator directly by clicking the contact link below each senator’s name on this page, and you can contact Senator McConnell directly here. It’s best to keep things short and to the point when contacting your senator. Include your name and exact address so they know you’re a constituent, then tell them exactly what you want them to do. For example:
My name is Sarah Smith and I’m a constituent at 109 Main Street, Townsville, California. I’m calling to urge Senator Harris to vote for the clean Continuing Resolution that would fund the government through February 8 and against President Trump’s hateful, anti-immigrant bill. Holding America hostage for border wall funding is counterproductive and immoral. Congress must pass a funding bill to reopen the government immediately, and override the President’s veto if necessary. Thank you for your time and attention.
And if you get phone anxiety and want to get a message to your representatives out quickly, Resistbot is a texting service that will deliver your message for you. You can also use Resistbot to send a message to the White House! Text the word RESIST to 50409 to get started.
Without public pressure, this government shutdown could go on indefinitely. Federal employees are prohibited from going on strike, so sadly the Trump administration can continue forcing them to work without pay as long as it wants – at least until those employees quit and find other jobs (assuming that’s an available option for those employees). I don’t think it’s right to treat federal employees this way, and the longer this shutdown continues the bigger the impact will be. We should demand that our elected officials do everything possible to pass a funding bill and reopen the government, with or without the President’s support.

Train Your Whole Body At Home With A Single Piece Of Equipment
These days, the range of fitness equipment designed for use in your very own living room is staggering. Want to work on mobility? Go for a yoga mat. Got a bit of space? Here’s some kettlebells. Want to mix it up? How about a TRX rig? Want to really mix it up? How about an Indian club to swing around?
All of which is great, but really, honestly, do you need it all? We would argue that you don’t. Because, you see, there is an easier way. It isn’t fancy. It isn’t anything new. But it does get results. With a pair of simple, frills-free dumbbells you can pretty much train any part of your body for any goal any time, anywhere. Not only that, but you aren’t at risk of knocking your partner or flatmate unconscious with a wayward kettlebell, either.
To help you upgrade your at-home arsenal, we muscled some of the best trainers around into breaking down how the humble dumbbell can help build you up in no time at all with quick and effective home workouts.
Aren’t Dumbbells Only Good For Big Arms?
No. “Dumbbells are one of the most versatile pieces of kits you can own,” explains James Castle-Mason, PT extraordinaire at London’s Roar Fitness. “There is a huge number of resistance exercises that can be done using a simple set of dumbbells, other than just some bicep curls. In fact, you can work your entire body with just a set of dumbbells if you know what movements to do.
“The great thing about dumbbells is that they take up little room, you don’t need space for gym equipment. They’re adjustable, meaning you’re not lifting the same weights over and over, you can make them heavier based on how strong you’re getting or how experienced you are. They’re also very cost effective.”
Tim Hayes, founder of the Peach fitness app, also backs the ‘bells. “Dumbbell workouts are great to easily add resistance to any work out. My biggest advice is to let go of the ego, and focus on your form; walk into any heavy weights section of any gym, and you’ll see lots of people trying to lift a weight that is far too heavy for them. This is only detrimental – Train your muscles not your ego.”
Checked your ego? Loaded your dumbbells with something you can actually lift? Remembering to stay hydrated? Good, because whatever your goals, our expert trainers have a home workout prescription for you.
Dumbbell Exercises To Do At Home
Build Big Arms
We all have a bit of ego, and big arms are what most people think dumbbells are for, so let’s cover them first. Leo Savage, PT at London’s elite Third Space, has the perfect workout.
1. Eccentric Bicep Curls
(10 reps) Curl both dumbbells up, focusing on keeping the downward phase of the movement slow and controlled, taking 3 seconds on the decline – this is where growth happens.
2. Laying Tricep Extensions
(10 reps) With dumbbells in both arms, lay on a bench, lift your arms so your elbows are pointing towards the ceiling and the dumbbells are behind your head. Keeping your elbows in the same place, push the dumbbells to the ceiling straightening your arms. Control the lowering phase and repeat.
3. Hammer Curls
(10 reps) Standing with both dumbbells by your side, have your knuckles facing away from your body. Curl the dumbbells up to your shoulders and slowly lower, without rotating the weights. Don’t let your back get involved – the power needs to come from the bicep, not swinging your back, which can also lead to injury.
Boost Your Endurance
Keith McNiven is founder of London-based personal training company Right Path Fitness, and knows a thing or two about endurance. Here’s how to keep your heart thumping for longer using nothing but dumbbells.
1. Side Laterals
Start from standing with your dumbbells at your sides, then raise them slowly away from your body until your arms are in a straight horizontal line. You’re going to start at 10 reps, working down from 9 to 8… all the way to 1. But that’s not all…
2. Dumbbell Row
In between side lateral sets, mix in the dumbbell row. So do 10 – 0 laterals, then 10 – 0 rows, three times through each. To complete the row, find a bench (or coffee table) and with one hand supporting you, bring the dumbbell up into your chest, in a rowing motion.
Supersets like this are ideal for building endurance as you’re working without a break, forcing your body to keep pushing, with little to no time to adjust. A one-minute window between sets is fine (so, in this instance, you’d work, rest, work, rest, work). You could also do it, for example, with the tricep extensions and bicep curls above. A word of warning, though, if you’re trying to build strength, slow and steady wins the race – don’t think you can combine the two and build muscle and endurance all at once…
Gain Leg Strength
No one likes leg day. It’s a fact. But mixing it up, and swapping out the swat rack for the dumbbell rack can help keep it fresh, challenging your muscles to adapt to a new challenge, boosting growth. Plus, you’ll look like you know exactly what you’re doing…
“Nothing matches a good upper body like a good set of wheels (legs),” says Castle-Mason. “Having a good set of legs that are strong looks impressive and is great for carrying over to sports too. For this one, we’re going to look at building strength, endurance and power all in one and combine a few exercises to do this.”
1. Goblet Squat
(6-8 reps for strength, 12-15 reps for endurance) With your feet shoulder width apart, hold a single dumbbell in front of your chest, look up, keep the chest up, and squat down by trying to sit in between your heels. This allows you to sit into the hips properly and work your legs, butt and abs too. Keep the weight and rep range heavy or light depending on your goal (heavy = strength, light = endurance).
2. Nordic Lean
(6-8 reps for strength, 12-15 reps for endurance) Kneel on the floor, squeeze your pelvis forward into a quad stretch then start to lean back slowly, feel the massive tension in the quads build up. The further you lean back, the harder it is, build up a tolerance first. This really challenges the quads and, if you’re struggling, you can even do it without dumbbells, too. Otherwise, keep it light and focus on getting it right.
3. Romanian Deadlift
(6-8 reps for strength, 12-15 reps for endurance) Stand tall with two dumbbells in front of you or at your side. Slowly unlock the hips and sit back into a hamstring stretch whilst keeping a straight back. The best indicator you’re doing this right is to feel a big stretch in your hamstrings. If you feel your lower back, you’ve set up incorrectly or gone too far. Slowly move into the stretch then thrust your hips forward to bring the dumbbells up and fire the glutes.
Gain Strength Everywhere
Want an all-over workout that benefits your entire body? Savage has some savage suggestions.
1. Thrusters
(3 sets, 10 reps)
Stand with your legs shoulder width apart. Hold a dumbbell in each hand, resting up by your shoulders in a comfortable way. Squat down with the weights by your shoulders. Then, as you drive up with your legs, simultaneously push the weights above your head. Focus on keeping your elbows in front of you and keeping your core engaged.
2. Renegade Rows
(3 sets, 5 reps per arm) Assume the press up position, but with dumbbells in each hand on the floor. Separate your feet shoulder width apart, keeping your torso tight. Row one of the weights up to your chest [as per the ‘dumbbell row’ above] and alternate. This home workout will beast your core, shoulders, back and arms.
3. Dumbbell Snatch
(3 sets, 5 reps per arm) Hold a dumbbell in one arm with your legs wider than shoulder width, and your arm hanging between your legs. Squat down, keeping a straight spine and the weight between your legs. As your drive up from the floor and straighten your legs, drive your elbow up to the sky and pull the dumbbell up your body and over head. A full-body beasting.
Lose Weight Quickly
Think you need lots of fancy equipment to lose weight? Think again. Avoid treadmill drudgery with Castle-Mason’s fast blasting dumbbell workout. To maximise calorie burn, minimise rest periods (20-30 seconds max) to get that heart rate going. Do this alongside a smart diet plan and you’ll find that you don’t need a tonne of equipment to shift some pounds.
1. Dumbbell Walking Lunges
(3-4 sets, 10-15 per leg) Grab a light dumbbell (10-15kg, or less). Take a long stride with the front foot, go slightly out to the side rather than straight in front or you’ll struggle to balance, put your weight down towards the front heel and step through to the next lunge. Make sure your knee tracks the same direction as your toes, don’t let your feet collapse inwardly.
2. Renegade Rows
(3-4 sets, 10-15 per arm) As per the Overall Strength workout. Set yourself up in a plank position with two dumbbells in hand (if too difficult, start with one side and one dumbbell only). Make sure your core is braced the same as a plank and then row the dumbbells in one at a time. Again, it pays to keep the weight light.
3. Dumbbell Thrusters
(3-4 sets, 10-15 per arm) As above. Need a refresher? Stand with feet shoulder width apart, dumbbells atop the shoulders in a neutral grip (palms facing towards side of your head). Squat down deep and then at the top of the squat, press the dumbbells over the head for a full body workout.
4. Lying Tricep Extension
(3-4 sets, 10-15 per arm) Another move you should be familiar with by now. Lay on the floor, feet flat and knees up. Start with dumbbells out in front of you, bend at the elbow bring dumbbells just shy of the floor behind your head, just before the floor, squeeze your tricep and push back to the top.

Breitling’s Latest Is A Contender For Watch Of The Year
As statements go, it was certainly a bold one. Just a year into his tenure as CEO of Breitling Georges Kern launched the most un-Breitling Breitling ever by resurrecting the Premier from the brand’s archives. Suddenly a name more associated with oversized pilots’ watches is now on a dial of a watch that would be best described as ‘elegant’.
However, this diversification isn’t limited to Breitling; over the last year brands such as Vacheron Constantin with its FiftySix and Jaeger LeCoultre with its Polaris collection have made a very deliberate bid for the new young and style-conscious watch buyer, which is exactly where the Premier is positioning itself.
It’s a range that is robust but refined, vintage but with modern touches and at a price point that doesn’t make your eyes water. And, after reading the rest of this article, it will most definitely be going to the top of your watch wish list.
The Breitling Premier’s Design
The new Premier is not so much a reissue as a reimagining. Elements of the old watch are still to be found in the typeface, the style of the hands and its overall appearance, but things have been updated for the 21st century.
“The new Premier models allow us to reflect on that impressive past, but of course, they tell their own new story: their elegance, performance, and quality are everything you would expect from a contemporary Breitling watch,” says Kern.
Tumblr media
Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42
In practice that means a larger case – 40mm or 42mm – as opposed to the original 35mm, which is just too small for contemporary tastes and, rather than a fully convex dial there is a convex area in the centre in homage.
The 1940s Premier collection was solely chronographs, which makes sense given Breitling’s prowess with that particular complication, however the design team made a decision to expand the range this time around to include a time only and a day-date, which allowed them to offer options at a lower price point.
The Movements
Tumblr media
Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42 Caseback
Giving people the chance to cherry pick how much they invest in their Premier was the decision to include a variety of movements from the ETA modifications B37 and B45 – for the time only and day/date respectively – through a Valjoux 7750 chronograph (one of the most well-known and well-respected chronograph base calibres in the industry).
And then there’s the Manufacture Breitling Calibre 01. This is the brand’s first in-house movement, which it has developed and produced in partnership with Tudor in what might be one of the first examples of cross-brand collaboration of recent years.
Also added to the range is the first example of the new way in which the brand is going to utilise its relationship with British car brand Bentley. Rather than a separate Breitling for Bentley line, there will be special editions in core collections such as the gorgeous green iteration of the Premier B01 Chronograph 42.
Tumblr media
Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42 Bentley British Racing Green
How To Wear It
As well as differing dial colours to choose from there are various strap options too, including a more formal take on Breitling’s signature Pilot bracelet, with longer narrower links to emphasise the dress rather than sport nature of the collection.
As for how to wear them, Kern would like you to take inspiration from brand ambassadors Adam Driver and Brad Pitt, though that just means looking brooding in white tees and jeans. If you’d like to pair your Premier with something slightly more on-trend then think Off-White’s take on business casual – tailored trousers with a more relaxed jumper or, if you’re feeling brave, a tracksuit under a tailored coat.
Tumblr media
Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42 Bentley British Racing Green
This is a watch that straddles sporty and dress, so play with that. Just make sure you retire it for evening wear; chronographs and cocktails don’t match.
Three Of The Best Breitling Premiers
Breitling Premier Automatic 40 (Anthracite Dial)
While this also comes on a blue dial and steel bracelet or with a silver dial and black leather strap, this cool anthracite grey and brown croc combination is the one that feels like the original Premier’s natural successor.
Powering it is Breitling’s take on an ETA 2895-2, the B37, and it is good to 100m. The 40mm case is large enough for modern wrists but still has vintage appeal, while the outer seconds ring is a lovely nod to the tachymeter scale that was on the original and also reminds you that, for all its elegance, this is still a robust everyday wearer.
See More: £3,600.00
Tumblr media
Premier B01 Chronograph 42 (Panda Dial)
Without a doubt, this is the star of the show. Everything is perfectly proportioned, from the 42mm case with its multi-step bezel and integrated pushers to the steeply angled lugs that allow the watch to sit low on the wrist, underplaying the cases thickness. There’s also the beautifully laid-out dial that, despite featuring chronograph sub dials and a tachymeter scale, is remarkably legible.
And the insides are just as impressive because the movement is the in-house Manufacture Breitling Calibre 01, on which the brand has a partnership with Tudor. Add to that, the fact that everyone loves a panda and you’ve got a watch that, for £6,600, is an absolute steal.

Premier Automatic Day & Date 40
Apparently it was the Rolex Day-Date President that first had the day of the week written in full at 12 o’clock and since then it has definitely remained a bit of a Marmite design feature. However, this Breitling does make a convincing argument in its favour. Thanks to the prominent indices, the day window doesn’t make the dial feel top heavy, while the date window is legible but not obtrusive.
In its black dial and steel bracelet iteration, it has a sophisticated masculinity that makes it feel a touch more edgy than your usual sports watch. Pair with one of this season’s shearling jackets for the perfect mix of retro and modern.

History Of The Breitling Premier
When most people think of the Breitling of the 1940s, it is the technical visage of Chronomat, which launched in 1942 and was the first to feature a rotating slide rule, that comes to mind. However, just a year later, Breitling decided to go completely against type and introduced an elegant, almost dress-style watch complete with a chronograph to its portfolio.
It still had a case that was anti-magnetic, anti-shock and waterproof, but if the Chronomat was intended to be worn by pilots then this was definitely aimed at those who were keeping their feet firmly on the ground.
Tumblr media
1945 Breitling Premier Ref.777
“The Chronomat of the 1940s was a tool watch whose clear purpose was to facilitate mathematical operations, while the Premier models were elegant and stylish dress watches,” explains Breitling CEO Georges Kern. “I would also point out that for the last decades of its [recent] history, Breitling was essentially positioned as a pilots’ watch brand, so a large part of its rich history has been overlooked.”
Because the Premier was overshadowed by the pilot narrative, it is hard to know exactly why Breitling thought it was a good idea to launch a dress watch when World War II was keeping most men occupied. Although, given Swiss neutrality, maybe it was a watch intended solely for the domestic market.
Tumblr media
1946 Breitling Premier Ref.734
However, its relatively unknown status within the Breitling canon makes it a watch for real vintage aficionados and a style that was ripe for reintroduction. “It was a logical move to introduce a watch line inspired by the elegant and highly-regarded Premier models of the 1940s,” says Kern. “In those days, they made an uncompromising style statement that [reflected] an important part of our heritage.”

Rhodes Scholarship Awarded to DACA Recipient for the First Time Ever in 2018
On November 17th, the Rhodes Scholarships (which are the oldest and possibly most revered global fellowship awards in the world) announced their 2018 list of American scholars, 32 students selected from the United States and U.S. territories. According to the Rhodes Scholarships website, scholars are chosen “not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but for their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership.”
The announcement of the Rhodes Scholarship winners is a big deal every year, but it’s particularly meaningful this year, because in addition to 21 women being named, one of the scholarship winners, Jin Kyu Park, is the first DACA recipient to ever receive the award.
According to the Harvard Crimson, this is the second time Park applied for the Rhodes Scholarship, and the first year that DACA recipients (those part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program), were eligible to receive the scholarship.
Park is currently completing his undergraduate degree at Harvard in Molecular and Cellular Biology with a minor in Ethnicity, Migration, and Rights. According to the Rhodes Scholarship Winners Profile page, Park, who was born in South Korea, founded a nonprofit organization in 2014 called HigherDreams, which provides resources and guidance for undocumented students applying to college. Park is also the director of the Harvard Philips Brooks House Association Chinatown Citizenship Program, which provides naturalization assistance to those residing in the Boston area.
Park's bio also lists several other accomplishments, including his positions as a research assistant at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT and the managing editor of the Harvard Undergraduate Research Journal. Park has also had opinion pieces on immigration published in the New York Times and the Harvard Crimson, in addition to appearing on MSNBC to share his views on DACA legislation. Park will continue his studies at the University of Oxford next year, and according to his [Rhodes Scholarship profile] (http://s3.amazonaws.com/rhodesscholars-fileshare/final_winners_bios_2018.pdf), he “seeks to build a career as an advocate for immigrant communities, and to provoke our governments to take immigrants’ rights and health seriously.”
When reached by email, Elliot Gerson, the American secretary of the Rhodes Trust, told Teen Vogue that “we are thrilled that Jin won one of our Scholarships. We expanded eligibility last year to include DACA students after hearing so much about the many remarkable ‘dreamers’ in American universities. Given his extraordinary accomplishments and potential to enrich our country further, it is shocking to consider that unless policies soon change, Jin could be denied reentry to the United States after his studies at Oxford.”
Although Park wasn’t selected last year, the director of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships at Harvard, Gregory A. Llacer told the Harvard Crimson that his application truly inspired the Rhodes Trust to reconsider the criteria for DACA recipients, saying “it basically was this kind of watershed moment, that [Park’s] application and his fortitude kind of opened up. So It’s really gratifying to see him be successful.”

It was a big night for black actors at the 2018 Creative Arts Emmy Awards as they swept all the guest acting categories.
The biggest surprise was definitely comedian Katt Williams’ win for his turn as Alligator Man in FX’s Atlanta. Ron Cephas Jones in NBC’s  This Is Us, Samira Wiley in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Tiffany Haddish for her hosting role in NBC’s Saturday Night Live also took home guest acting awards.

Nicki Minaj's New Boyfriend Has a, Er, Problematic Criminal Record
Today in yikes news, Nicki Minaj appears to have gone Instagram official with her rumored new boyfriend, Kenneth Petty. And, um, according to TMZ, he's a registered sex offender with at least two convictions to his name: first-degree attempted rape in 1995 (when both he and his victim were 16), and—several years after he was released from that stint in prison—first-degree manslaughter.
Advertisement - Continue Reading Below
Per TMZ's reporting, Petty served almost four years in a New York state prison for the attempted rape. Prosecutors claimed he tried to force a girl into intercourse using a sharp object, which is...terrifying.
Petty reportedly served another seven years for the first-degree manslaughter conviction, and was released from prison in 2013. It's unclear how he and Nicki got together, though it's speculated that they're friends from Queens, New York. Here's how they made it official:
Nicki has turned off the comments on her post, presumably due to fan backlash. She's yet to directly comment on...uh...any of this.

Clarins SOS Colour-Correcting Primers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Coloured-primers to deal with different areas of your complexion and individual skincare concerns is nothing new, but it is an idea that has really taken off and you can understand why. Gleaning inspiration from the colour wheel: when two opposite shades are placed on top of each other, they cancel each other out.So whether it is dark circles, redness sallow skin or dark spots, Clarins SOS Primers has a remedy to help diminish your problem areas and create an even base. These new products are in a similar vein to the Clarins SOS face masks released last year and can be mixed, matched and used on various areas of your face.
There are six SOS primers, all with a fluid, hydrating texture enriched with sea lily extract and an anti-pollution complex to help skin become protected from the environment. The consistency is lovely and smooth and feels really comfortable on the skin; not sticky or heavy at all. They are best applied after your moisturiser before you start to apply your makeup, or you could even mix a blob in with your foundation. The white primer, aimed at brightening skin and adding radiance would be a good one for this!
As well as the universal white primer for brightening, there is also a pink one for combating signs of fatigue (yes please!), a peach one to blue imperfections, a coral one to visibly minimise dark spots, a green one to tackle redness and a lavender one to brighten sallow skin. So which one would you pick?

3 Piece Casual
Disclosure: This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Catherines. All opinions are 100% mine.
I'm the first to admit that I skew to the side of overdressed for many things. It's not that I want to be dressier all the time, it's that I don't have as many great fitting casual outfits as I do dresses. This version of casual is right up my alley: jeans, a tank top, and lightweight topper.
Shirt length always seems to be an issue with me and my long torso, but Catherines shirts always hit the right spot. This black tank is a wardrobe staple. Bonus that it doesn't wrinkle and washes very easily.
A tank and jeans become infinitely more versatile by throwing a cardigan or topper on it. The embroidery on the sheer fabric is gorgeous! I was immediately drawn to the pattern and colors.
With the tank and jeans, I could easily swap out this cardigan for the kimono or the white denim from this casual jumpsuit post. In fact, I think I'm going to wear the same jeans and tank with the leopard print kimono from the jumpsuit post.
The dark wash on these bootcut jeans means they're easy to dress up or down. They have a good amount of stretch to them, so they're comfortable all day but also don't give me dumpy butt. You know what I mean, right?! The sag in the tush from stretching out over the day.
Comfy flats completed the look. Photos by Emily Moseley
Does your style skew casual or dressy? Or are you a master of both?

What To Pack For Your Summer Beach Vacation
Tumblr media
It's officially summer, and I'm sure many of you have at least one vacation planned. There are many things that make summer at the beach so nostalgic for me. What about you?
Whether you are headed out for dinner after a day in the sun and playing in the sand, or a traditional family photo session at sunset, you're going to need a few outfits! I like traveling to the beach with pieces that can all be mixed and matched. You never know what will happen, and the weather can change pretty quickly after a typical summer rain shower. I LOVE a summer storm when the cool air rolls in and you can enjoy the most incredible cool summer night in your cozy knit sweater.. ah I can't wait!
I never want to feel stuck with what I'm wearing, and I always strive to be comfortable in my clothing, while still polished and put together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For example, I've been living in tank tops most recently, and it's for good reason. You can pair a tank with cute high waisted shorts, a skirt like photographed above, my favorite denim shorts, and even white denim with a scarf or cardigan for an easy layered look. Ps: currently dying for this light blue cardigan from Ganni... so perfect!
I love the fit and color of this tank from Vince. It has a subtle rib, and great quality. (I'm wearing a size small for reference!) I also have this one from Monrow in white , and this one from L'agence in black and white (can be seen below with my shorts). All of them being staples in my summer wardrobe.

(Please excuse my hair in these photos, it was HUMID and beyond the point of miserable heat. LOL )
I love having two bag options when I travel. Anything more is excessive and you never end up actually using it, so save your space and narrow down to two! In my opinion, you can never go wrong with neutrals. Especially if you're going for the "less is more" route. I have been wearing my Pamela Munson tote all spring and now summer, so that is at the top of my list. Still love this white embroidered straw tote, and it's perfect to use for travel and as a handbag.
My next option is currently this one pictured above from Staud. It's white, so it's immediately chic and can match with everything you have. (My opinion applies to the black color option as well!) It's also much more functional than it appears, and I love having something more unique and fun. Purchasing it in a neutral color helps tone down the "fun", so you can wear it with more, making it classic and treasured as time goes on instead of trendy for one summer.

My picks for the best shoe options mostly consist of neutrals, but damn I really love these blue and white sandals as well! I'm also very into this pair from Sam Edelman pictured above with my skirt, super comfortable and simple, yet perfect to wear out with dresses and skirts. Let's just say they can be dressed up or down :) I also just ordered these gold Jack Rogers to match Madelyn's pair! My blush pink and blue and white Jack Rogers are a favorite of mine. I wear them almost daily because they don't show wear, and are crazy comfortable. I think the gold is going to be stunning for summer.

A few more items to think about packing -
My favorite travel case set The perfect pair of earrings for everyday, and then a statement pair Classic sunglasses Chic one piece swimsuit, and pretty coverup My favorite sunscreen for the face, and this one for my body. It smells incredible! Headphones for travel and relaxing on the beach/by the pool with a good book or stack of magazines! & don't forget the perfect sun hat!

7 of Our Favorite Ways to Use Chamomile for Natural Healing
Things that are a must for your medicine cabinet: Vitamin C, Band-Aids, aspirin and … chamomile?
I’ve been slowly building up my natural medicine cabinet for a few years now. It’s stocked with all the basics most of us grew up with, like Neosporin and aspirin, as well as a variety of herbs, teas and tinctures that I’ve tested throughout the years.
While I have some favorites, the one medicinal herb I can’t live without is chamomile. Not only is it one of the most popular home remedies out there, it’s also one of the most effective herbs for all sort of ailments.
Everything from insomnia to stomach aches can benefit from a cup of freshly steeped tea. And since it’s easy to come by (you can often find the tea at your local grocery store) you never really have to worry about running out.
Here’s all the reasons you should never be without chamomile in your medical kit.
What is Chamomile Good For
Most of us only think of chamomile as a tea used to promote sleep. But it turns out that chamomile flowers are actually one of the most popular and versatile herbs on the planet. For centuries, people have used chamomile for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties.
Nowadays it’s also used in everything from teas, body products and cosmetics to promote tranquility, skin health and overall wellness. The list goes on and on, but here are some of the most common uses for chamomile:
1. Sleep
Chamomile is a mild sedative, making it great for improving sleep quality and relaxation. Its calming effect is thought to be attributed to apidenin, a flavonoid said to decrease anxiety and muscle tension.
2. Pain relief
Glycine, a chemical found in high quantities in chamomile, helps relieve muscle spasms and relax nerves, making it great at easing all sorts of aches and pains. Studies show that chamomile is effective in relieving arthritis, back pain, bedsores and stomach cramps. High glycine levels may also help relax the uterus, explaining why the tea appears to relieve menstrual cramps
3. Stomach ailments
Thanks to its antispasmodic properties, chamomile can help relieve upset stomach, stomach cramps, irritable bowel syndrome and indigestion.
4. Cold and Flu
Chamomile has potent antibacterial and antifungal properties. Drinking chamomile tea has been shown to raise the body’s natural infection-fighting ability, helping you recover more quickly.
5. Acne
In addition to taking it internally, chamomile can be used as a topical skin treatment. Applying the tea directly to skin can help lower inflammation, promote healing and improve the appearance of acne scars.
6. Anxiety
The herb isn’t just good for physical relaxation, it’s said to help with emotional relaxation as well. Take it in tea or tincture form to calm the nerves and lower stress. It can also be given to hyper children to help them relax.
7. Eye and Skin Infections
Because it’s naturally antibacterial, you can use chamomile to fight infections. Make a strong cup of chamomile tea and use a soaked cotton ball to wipe the infected area every hour throughout the day. The infection should be gone within 24-36 hours.
Where to get Chamomile
I’ve seen chamomile tea at many chain grocery stores and local super markets. You also may be able to find the dried flowers in the bulk bins at health foods stores. If you can’t find it locally, you can buy it in bulk online from a place like Mountain Rose Herbs or Amazon.
How to Take It
The list of ways that chamomile can be used is surprisingly long, but some popular methods include:
diffusing the essential oil
taking it in tincture, tea or capsule form
applying the tea directly to skin
adding it to homemade beauty products
Although it is commonly used medicinally, there is no standard dose for chamomile. Most studies use somewhere between 400 milligrams to 1,600 milligrams daily in capsule form. When taken as a tea, it’s said that you can drink safely drink up to four cups a day. As with most herbs, its best to ask your doctor or naturopath should you have any questions about the dosage.

Megan Tries It: A Night Cream for Major Glow
Tumblr media
MEGAN TRIES IT
Tumblr media
Megan O’Neill is the senior beauty editor at goop. Which is another way of saying she has a passion for clean products, loves anything that reduces stress, and will happily guinea pig herself in the name of wellness.
My skin rules on vacation. Smooth, uncharacteristically clear, impossibly gleamy. It’s the very specific combination of basking in the glory of no looming deadlines, endless sunshine, and the surge I get from actually standing upright all day instead of hunching over a computer. But in a matter of days after my return, I’m back to looking like…a girl who’s mildly tired, with skin that’s not bad but not especially wonderful either.
This year, I’m determined to throw a wrench in this dynamic. In the interest of supercharging my nighttime routine, I decide to try the night cream from goop, working it into my lineup of potions.
It feels amazing. The blend of sandalwood-nut and apricot-kernel oils, plus shea and linseed extract, is rich and cocooning, and it melts in like nothing I’ve ever put on my face. My skin feels soothed and happy. Glancing in the mirror, I’m a bit irked that my husband is already asleep and that no one else is here to witness this radiance. I’m not really concerned with wrinkles, yet, but I’m pleased with myself for taking this preemptive measure. I go to bed feeling pampered and way more attractive than usual.
The glow is still there when I wake up the next morning. And the next, and the next after that, too. The night cream is now an indispensable part of my routine, and after a few weeks, I swear I look different: smooth, uncharacteristically clear, impossibly gleamy. As if I’m forever on vacation.

Take a Cue From Nature With a Wellness Night In
It’s usually around this time of year that we look up from our spiral-bound planners and realize — gasp — it’s already here.
We brace ourselves for another holiday season and the foreseeable chaos that follows. Wellness routines are put on hold to accommodate shorter days followed by longer to-do lists. Ubiquitous seasonal obligations and events deplete our downtime, while offering social niceties and sugar-laden fare in exchange.
All in all, sanity is swapped for pandemonium as we push toward the finish line of the calendar year. By the time January rolls around, we need resolutions; we have veered so far off our internal compass that we conceive vows purely to make it back to true north.
While we busy ourselves looking for giftwrap and last minute ingredients, Mother Nature coolly juxtaposes our self-inflicted disarray. Flora retreats gracefully into dormancy where roots are quietly rekindled and stems strengthened. Animals hibernate, turning inward amidst the weight of snow and sleet. Each preparation is a necessary stepping-stone; a loudly abundant spring bloom is lingering just around the corner.
If we choose, we can learn from the wild things that surround us, to take time to heal, reset and reinforce during this wintry season. And rather than doing so alone, we can opt to share our nourishing endeavors with those we love. The best gift received may be as simple as space to retreat and unwind.
So as we gather our girlfriends for our next night in — traditionally lounging, vegging and catching up — consider the following tips to give this evening a necessary wellness upgrade during this unruly, yet undoubtedly sacred, time of year:
Call your tribe.
Let them know you need a night in… with their company. Give them a heads up on the evening’s itinerary so they can come prepared to unwind without expectation, rather than having to rise to (yet another) social occasion.
Create the space.
Form a tranquil environment by utilizing any combination of the following: candles, incense, moody lighting, mellow tunes and relaxing aromatherapy (in this instance, lavender, frankincense, chamomile and ylang ylang essential oils are all advantageous, just make sure none of your guests have any sensitivities).
Hire an expert to help your girl gang unwind.
Whether you choose to bring in a mobile esthetician for some much-needed pampering, a masseuse who specializes in chair massages and can aptly rub out those holiday knots or a yoga instructor to lead you through a tension-reducing restorative class, start off the evening with an offering to welcome the entire group into a serene state.
The best gift received may be as simple as space to retreat and unwind.
Serve homemade elixirs.
Break out relaxing herbal teas or probiotic rich kombucha. Better yet, try your hand at making a batch of Golden Milk, which includes a nourishing combination of sweetness, spices and anti-inflammatory turmeric. If your friends have been lamenting their once-on-point cooking regimes, give everyone’s recipe repertoire a facelift and let them jump in the kitchen with you.
You do not have to be a skilled home chef to add value to your friends’ cooking tactics. Something as simple as straining almond milk from saturated pulp offers a messy and simplistic joy. Not to mention, it allows for a tactile connection to self-nourishment.
Up your mind/body/beauty skills.
If cooking isn’t your thing, try your hand at a wellness-based crafting project. Most of us have a Pinterest board brimming with homemade bath bombs, Epsom salt soaks, moisturizing creams or the like. To keep hosting costs in check, give your gals a grocery list, including optional dried herbs and healing aromatics.
Just like cooking from scratch, there is something sacred about creating a tangible bath or beauty tonic. Depending on our intention when crafting the potion, we can choose to nourish our soul to the same extent as our body; pure ingredients and an unhampered mind equals wholesome simplicity.
Create a wellness regimen.
Help facilitate a valuable, yet straightforward journaling exercise. The goal is for each person to leave with an actionable list of intentions to help them stay balanced and poised throughout the holiday season. First off, ask them to consider things such as sleep, alone time and physical and soulful nourishment.
Then, answer the following questions:
How do you currently feel about your wellness regimen? Do you feel balanced, relaxed, energized, nourished, focused, and rested? What worked this past year? What didn’t work? What are your “non-negotiables” as you move into the holiday season and New Year? (I.e. what are you not willing to compromise so you can function as a sane and happy human/wife/friend/mother/CEO, etc.?)
If you feel inspired, rework these questions so they are applicable to your guests.
Next, ask those around you to list a revamped regime, holistic intentions or an all-inclusive mantra to help keep each person’s wellness compass intact. Turn on soft tunes and allow time to reflect and catalog. To close the evening, invite your guests to share. With our closest friends surrounding us, we have the perfect community present to express any emerging vulnerabilities when it comes to self-nourishment.
Out of a deep love and respect for one another, we need to hold each other accountable to live our best lives. Individually, this means nurturing our tired bodies, our famished minds and polishing our resilient souls. Together, this means diving in, generously offering and openly receiving support.
As we walk into the New Year, let us put our best feet forward — arms linked, side-by-side, with wholehearted smiles in-tow.
Could you use a night like this? Which of these ideas would be most helpful for you?

DIY Modern Holiday Wreath
6. To finish the edges, secure long, flowing pieces of greenery to the wire frame behind your bunches. You may have a lot of paddle wire showing at the base of wreath where you secured your first bundle, (I did!). No worries — this is an easy fix! Since you have lots of secure wire to work with now, start sticking pieces of greenery and foliage into the wire closure counter clockwise to conceal the wire. Repeat this process until your starting point is mostly covered — and if you can sill see some paddle wire, don’t worry! At a distance, it won’t be visible.
7. Finally, hold your wreath up to do a final check for any holes in your design or pieces that need to be secured. At this point you’ll have lots of wire holding your wreath together that you can pop extra pieces of greenery and foliage into to finish things off.
