次は「日本」にお香が初めて淡路島に流れ着いて伝わった事を題材に音楽を作りたいと思います。

古代インドから東へ伝えられた香りの文化は、仏教とともに日本へと渡ってきました。

仏教の伝来と香木の漂着

595年　淡路島に香木が漂着

お香の原料となる「香木」が初めて日本に漂着したのは、595年であると『日本書紀』の中で伝えられています。

“推古天皇三年の夏四月に　沈水淡路嶋に漂着れり　其の大きさ一圍（ひといだき）　嶋人　沈水といふことを知らずして　薪に交てて竈に焼く　其の烟気遠く薫る　　即ち異なりとして献る”

超訳ではありますが、要約すると下記のようにうたわれています。　

“推古天皇三年（595年）4月に、淡路島にひとかかえほどもある沈水（香木）が流れついてきました。島の人々は、ただの流木だと思いかまどに薪と一緒にくべたところ、たちまちたいへんかぐわしい香りのする煙がたちのぼった。これに驚いた人々は、この木片を朝廷に献上した。”

沈水と呼ばれる香木

淡路島に初めて漂着したといわれるこの沈水というのは、「沈香」のことです。沈水香木と書かれるように、比重が大変思いため水の中に沈んでしまうため、この名がついたとも言われています。

沈香は、現在でもお香の原料としても大変貴重な香木であり、特に品位の高い香りがします。

今となっては天然の沈香を手にするのも困難になりつつあり大変貴重な香木のため、ひとかかえほどもするほどの大きな沈香をくべたというのは、今となっては想像するに絶するほど贅沢なことでもありますが、さぞかし香しい香りがくゆらいだに違いないでしょう。

後に記載しますが、そもそもこのような香木は日本では生育しません。そのため、当時の人々が、薪といっしょにくべたことで、大変かぐわしい香りがするということに大変驚いたというのもわかる気がします。

聖徳太子が木片を鑑定

島の人々により朝廷に献上されたこの木片は、当時推古天皇の摂政をしていた聖徳太子によって鑑定されます。

博識のある聖徳太子は、この木片を見るなり、これは“正真正銘の「沈水（沈香）」である”と仰られたと言われています。

聖徳太子と仏教

島の人々が大変驚いたこの薫る木片を、なぜ聖徳太子は木片を見るなり「沈香」であると認めることができたのか。それは、聖徳太子は既に大陸から伝わってきた仏教の普及に努めていたほど仏教に精通していたからだと考えられています。

香木が漂着した595年より50年ほどさかのぼる538年に大陸から日本に伝わってきた仏教。　インドでうまれた仏教は、仏像や経典とともに日本にわたってきました。　仏教では、花を飾り、燈明を灯し、香を焚いて清めるという、一連の仏教儀礼があり、この三具足にあるように仏教の教えとともに、仏教儀礼の小道具なども大陸から伝わってきました。

そのため、既に仏教を熟知していた聖徳太子は、仏前を清め、諸仏に祈願をこめる儀式としての供香の原料である香木の存在を知っていたのであろうと考えられています。

その後、この献上された沈水（沈香）は財宝などとともに、671年に日本最古の本格的寺院である法興寺に献上されたと、『日本書紀』に記述されています。

（まとめ）仏教儀礼としての香

このように、日本ではお香の原料となる香木（沈香）が淡路島に漂着したのが日本のお香の歴史の始まりとなりますが、香木よりも先に伝来していたといわれる仏教と当時の政権状況も相重なり、仏教の普及とともに、仏教の儀礼としてつかわれる「香」、即ち「祈りのための香」であり、仏前を清め、諸仏に祈願をこめる儀式である『供香』としてが、日本の香の使い方の始まりでした。

香の形式は、沈香や白檀などの香木を粉末にしたり刻んだものを、漢方の生薬として薬効成分も高いその他の香原料をまぜ合わせて焚いてくゆらせる使い方であり、「焼香」と呼ばれる方法です。

いかがでしたでしょうか。「「祈りのための香」」として伝来した日本の香が、この先どのような歴史をたどっていくのでしょうか。そこには、今の私たちの暮らしにも紐づくものがみえてきます。

遊ぶものは神である。神のみが、遊ぶことができた。

遊は絶対の自由と、ゆたかな創造の世界である。

それは神の世界に外ならない。

この神の世界にかかわるとき、人もともに遊ぶことができた。

遊とは動くことである。

常には動かざるものが動くときに、はじめて遊は意味的な行為となる。

動かざるものは神である。

神隠るというように、神は常に隠れたるものである。

神を尋ね求めることを、「左右をしてこれを求む」という。

左は左手に工の形をした呪具をもち、右は右手に祝詞を収める器の形である(サイ)をもつ。

左右とは神に対する行為であり、左右颯颯（さつさつ）の舞とは、神のありどを求め、神を楽しませる舞楽である。左右の字をたてに重ねると、尋となる。

隠れたる神という観念は、神はもと識られざるもの、

幽暗のうちにあるものとする怖れを示すものであるが、それはまた隠れるという字の字形構造のうちにも

あらわれている。

左偏の「こざと」とよまれる部首字は、山をたてざまにした形とされているが、それは神わざとしても不可能なことである。

その形はもと、神が天上に陟（のぼ）り降りする神梯であった。

しかし天上にある限り、神は人と交渉をもつことはない。

人びとの身辺にある神は、その神梯を陟降（ちょくこう）して、

地上に降り立って住む。それも人びとの住むすぐ近くに

「み身を隱したまうて」住むのである。その神梯の前に神を祭ることを際という。際とは神人の際である。

神が隠れ住むとき、その隠れ蓑にあたるものが、呪具の工であった。隠れるときにも尋ねるときにも、その呪具が必要であった。その呪具の上下に手をとりそえて、これで填塞（てんそく）したなかに、神は隠れたまうのである。それを塞という。

塞は洞窟の入口に、四個の工をおいて、これを塞ぐ意象を示すものが、字の原形であった。

隠の本字は隱である。隱れるとは、神が呪具の工によって「み身を隱したまう」形である。

これは字遊びである。字遊びは、かつては神聖な神の、自己顕現の方法であった。

いまや神と人とは、その位置をかえている。

現代の文明における遊びのように、それは堕落し果てた虚妄の遊びである。

遊とは、この隠れたる神の出遊をいうのが原義である。

結界（けっかい）とは、仏教において、サンガ(saṃgha, 僧伽(そうぎゃ))がひとつの「現前(げんぜん)サンガ」(sammukhībhūta-saṃgha)の空間領域（sīmā =界）を設定することを言う。結界についての規定は律蔵の犍度(けんど)の第一章に見られる。

後世、界の概念と密教の神秘主義が合体することにより、原初のインド仏教にはなかった、「特殊なエネルギーを保持した神秘空間としての界」という観念が生じ、聖なる領域と俗なる領域を分け、秩序を維持するために区域を限るという意味あい（けっかい、Siimaabandha）も生じた。さらに日本では、古神道や神道における神社などでも、同様の概念があることから、言葉として用いられている。大和言葉では端境（はざかい）やたんに境ともいう。

密教

清浄な領域と普通（もしくは不浄）の領域との区切ることである。これにはいくつかの種類がある。

摂僧界（しょうそうかい） - その内側で受戒や布薩などを行う

摂衣界（しょういかい） - その内側で三衣を離れて止宿しても罪にならない

摂食界（しょうじきかい） - その内側で食を煮ても罪にならない

また、密教では、修行する場所や道場に魔の障碍が入らないようにするため、結界が行われる。これには以下の3種類がある。

国土結界

道場結界

壇上結界

高野山や比叡山は国土結界、護摩修法は壇上結界の例として挙げられる。

神道・古神道

古神道である神籬（ひもろぎ）や磐座（いわくら）信仰は、神の依り代であるとともに、その鎮守の森や森林や山や海や川や岩や木などは、禁足地である場所も多く、神域や常世と現世の端境を示し、結界としての役割も果たしている。神籬の「籬」は、垣の意味であり、磐座は磐境ともいい境を意味する。この考え方が積極的に用いられ、古来より郊外の集落の境や辻などに配置された道祖神、庚申塔、祠などの石仏は、災厄を集落に入れないようにするための、結界の役割をしていたともいわれる。

神道においても、結界は神社などでも用いられ、たとえば境界線を示すために、神社・寺院などの境内や建築物では意図的に段差を設けたり、扉や柵、鳥居や注連縄などを用いる。一般の家庭などでも、注連縄飾りや節分の鰯の干物なども結界である。

古神道や神道において、一定範囲の空間に設定されたタブー（禁足）を視覚化したものとも言え、それは聖なる領域（常世）と俗なる領域（現世）という二つの世「界」を「結」びつける役割をも持つ。

茶道における結界

静謐を旨とする日本独自文化の茶道においては、もてなす側の亭主と客との間にある暗黙のルールを視覚化するため、種々の仕掛けを設けこれを結界とする。

茶道具の一つで、客畳が道具畳に接続している時に、その境界を表示するために「炉屏」というものを置き、結界とする。

茶室に至る庭の露地などで、客が立ち入るべきでないことを示すため、目印として縄で結わいた石（関守石・留め石）、あるいは小石に差し渡した竹筒などを置き結界とする。

茶室への入り口である「躙口（にじりぐち）」での、低く抑えて意図的に入りにくさを強調する仕掛けも、茶席を聖なる非日常空間とするための結界である。また、茶室に入る前に手を水で清めるための「蹲踞（つくばい）」の仕掛けも同様である。

概要

外部からの来訪者（異人、まれびと）に宿舎や食事を提供して歓待する風習は、各地で普遍的にみられる。その理由は経済的、優生学的なものが含まれるが、この風習の根底に異人を異界からの神とする「まれびと信仰」が存在するといわれる。

「まれびと」の称は1929年（昭和4年）、民俗学者の折口信夫によって提示された。彼は「客人」を「まれびと」と訓じて、それが本来、神と同義語であり、その神は常世の国から来訪することなどを現存する民間伝承や記紀の記述から推定した。折口のまれびと論は「国文学の発生〈第三稿〉」（『古代研究』所収）によってそのかたちをととのえる。右論文によれば、沖縄におけるフィールド・ワークが、まれびと概念の発想の契機となったらしい。

常世とは死霊の住み賜う国であり、そこには人々を悪霊から護ってくれる祖先が住むと考えられていたので、農村の住民達は、毎年定期的に常世から祖霊がやってきて、人々を祝福してくれるという信仰を持つに至った。その来臨が稀であったので「まれびと」と呼ばれるようになったという。現在では仏教行事とされている盆行事も、このまれびと信仰との深い関係が推定されるという。

来訪神のまれびとは神を迎える祭などの際に、立てられた柱状の物体（髯籠・山車など）の依り代に降臨するとされた。その来たる所は海の彼方（沖縄のニライカナイに当たる）、後に山岳信仰も影響し山の上・天から来る（天孫降臨）ものと移り変わったという。

オーストリアの民族学者であるアレクサンダー・スラヴィクは、友人の岡正雄により日本における「まれびと信仰」の実態を知り、ゲルマン民族やケルト民族における「神聖なる来訪者」の伝説や風習と比較研究した。ウィキペディアより

分かれ道。「ち」は「道」、「また」は「股」。多くの分かれ道は「八衢」と呼ばれる。衢には衢を支配する神がいた。記紀には道に関わる神が多く見られるが、「道の饗の祭」の祝詞には「大八衢にゆつ磐むらの如く塞ります、皇神等の前に申さく、『八衢ひこ・八衢ひめ・くなどなどと御名は申して』」のように、八衢の神が登場し道を管理している。万葉集に詠まれる衢は、八衢として詠まれていて、恋歌に見られるのを特徴としている。「橘の影踏む道の八衢に物をそ思ふ妹に逢はずして」（2-125）、「言霊の八十の衢に夕占問ふ占正に告る妹相寄らむと」（11-2506）、「椿市の八十の衢に立ち平し結びし紐を解かまく惜しも」（12-2951）のように成立する恋歌は、おそらく歌垣の場を背景としているものと思われる。市は、古代では歌垣の行われる場所であり、椿市は有名であった。四方八達の衢は、異国人たちが交易のために集まり、そこには多くの人々が満ちあふれ、臨時に開かれる歌垣で賑わったのである。それを証明するように「紫は灰さすものそ椿市の八十の衢に逢へる児や誰」（12-3101）があり、行きずりの男が八衢で女性に名を尋ねるのであるが、女性は「たらちねの母が呼ぶ名を申さめど道行く人を誰と知りてか」（12-2102）と、母の呼ぶ名は行きずりの者には教えないのだと反発する。これは歌垣における名を問うことをテーマとした歌の断片であり、明らかに歌垣の折の掛け歌であることを教えている。辰巳正明『詩の起原』（笠間書院）。

山辺の道（やまのべのみち）は大和の古代道路のひとつで、奈良盆地の東南にある三輪山のふもとから東北部の春日山のふもとまで、盆地の東縁、春日断層崖下を山々の裾を縫うように南北に通ずる古道。山の辺の道とも表記され、歴史上の記録では日本最古の道として知られる。

起点

現在のその道の起点は、海石榴市（つばいち、椿市:つばきのいち）である。古代には、海石榴市の八十（ヤソ）の衢（ちまた）と称されたところで、桜井市粟殿（おおどの）を中心とした地域であった。平安時代中期の延長4年（926年）には椿市観音堂付近が起点の地になった。

この市は、政治の中心が主として奈良盆地の東南部にあった頃、定期的に市が立って栄えた。北へたどる山辺の道の起点であり、そこに初瀬街道がT字形に合し、さらに飛鳥からの山田の道、磐余の道などの主要な街道が集まり、また初瀬川を下り大和川に出る水運の河港もでき、水陸交通などの要衝の土地であった。その場所は三輪山の南、今の桜井市金屋付近である。

推古紀16年（608年）8月の条に「唐の客を海石榴市の衢に迎ふ」とあり、隋の使者は、初瀬川を船で遡り海石榴市で船を降り、市（衢）そこで出迎えられ、飛鳥の小墾田宮に入京したのであろう。路傍に「海石榴市観音道」の石の道標があり、少し離れたところに「海石榴市観音堂」がある。

道程

金屋の集落を後にして三輪山の山麓を北へ行くと三輪山の神大物主を祭神とする大神神社につく。大神神社は、日本最古の神社で大和国の一宮である。三輪山信仰は縄文または弥生時代まで遡るかも知れない。
