TALE AS OLD AS TIME - EPILOGUE

I told you this was coming.

There's barely anything NSFW in there yet, but I will ask you not to read it if you are a kid.

(This book doesn't interfere in the main story, as it happens after they reach the happy ever after)

In TAOAT, Papyrus is a Fell monster. Also, he plays the beast, he's not just a regular skeleton.

Man, I should have made him TALLER!

Like, ridiculously tall compared to Chara (who's around 1,55 m). Like, 2,20 m or something. At least over two meters.

Yup, consider it done in my mind! I'm not changing the art I've posted in the past, so his height is gonna be super inconsistent, but who cares? It's not like I get the proportions right all the time anyway.

I'm just a sucker for height differences. Sue me.

(I'm posting the first chapter of a nsfw sequel for this AU soon and that's why this is even remotely relevant. Will be posted in AO3 but I'll add the link in here)

"Even if she knew it was impossible, Chara kept stubbornly pulling Papyrus' arm in a bad attempt to drag the tall monster through the gardens. Thanks to the adrenaline she was actually able to take a few steps towards the castle, but there was only so much a small bookworm like her could do. 

So, when the king opened one of his sockets, Chara was washed with an immense wave of relief.

-Thank God, you're awake! - she exclaimed, pulling his hand with urgency - Here, get up! Can you walk? That… That thing is gone, the wolves can come back at any minute! C'mon, we need to go!

Papyrus pulled himself up, disoriented. He stumbled forward, placing some of his weight on Chara. He couldn't open his right socket and one of his legs didn't feel quite right.

-Are you ok? - the woman asked, worried, after they managed to establish a decent rhythm - You are bleeding! And you passed out very suddenly back there.

-I'm… I think I'm ok? - the man replied, unsure - I'm guessing summoning that thing used too much energy.

-What on Earth was that?

-No idea. I have never summoned anything other than bones before.

-Alright. Cool - Chara felt the weirdest urge to laugh. She might be in shock - I didn't know skeletons could bleed, by the way. Weird.

-I can also talk and walk, but bleeding is the weird part? I… Ah, fuck!

Papyrus flinched after touching the right part of his skull. There was a nasty cut on the place the wolf's claws hit his socket, no wonder he couldn't open it.

-This one might leave a scar - the man grunted, fighting the urge to keep touching the cut.

The wash of relief Chara had felt for reaching the giant front doors of the castle was suddenly dimmed by her concern.

-But… But you won't be blind in that eye, will you? - she asked, her voice coated in worry.

-It's not an actual eye, so I doubt it - the king replied, finally closing the heavy doors behind them.

They both leaned against the doors and slided to the floor in synchrony, the adrenaline leaving their bodies and being replaced by exhaustion. 

After a minute of silent panting on the floor, Papyrus turned his skull at Chara.

-Hey, are you hurt?

-I'm not - she replied, also turning to face him.

-Great, I can scold you then - he frowned at the human, keeping his voice dangerously low - Haven't I specifically told you "the barrier doesn't affect wild animals so don't leave the castle at night"? It was one of the first things I've ever said to you. What the hell were you thinking?

-I wasn't thinking - the woman replied, also frowning. She suddenly remembered she was mad at him - But I had just found out everything we've been through ever since day one was a huge, huge lie, I was devastated. I didn't think, I just had to leave this place. I had to run. I was too hurt to think.

-I… - Papyrus hesitated for a moment before proceeding - I also told you not to go to the west wing. God, why can't you follow simple instructions?

-Wha… Wait, do you want me to be sorry for discovering your dirty secret? - Chara asked, outraged - Don't you dare to throw this blame on me! I didn't even know I was in the west wing, all the wings look exactly the same!

They DID NOT look exactly the same, but Papyrus held his tongue on that. That girl had the sense of direction of a brick, it was very possible she ended up there by accident. A very, very unfortunate accident that almost got them both killed.

The monster held the bridge of his nasal bone, grunting. What a fantastic day.

Chara's hands were grabbing her dress with so much strength her knuckles were white. Then, she let go of it with a shaky sigh, just as her eyes filled with water.

-I'm really sorry about your injuries though - the woman murmured, gulping - Thank you for saving my life."

PAPARA WEEK 2023 DAY 2 - Curse and blessing

"-W… What? - Papyrus babbled, unable to think of any other words to reply to Chara's blunt accusation.

Well, what else could he say? He got busted. It was over.

-You heard me! - the woman shouted, her delicate face scrunched in despair - Your little magic flower spilled it all! How dare you deceive me like this? Use me like this? Would you even talk to me if that had no effect on the curse? You just…

-Chara…

-Don't interrupt me!!

-CHARA!

She turned around to look at the place Papyrus was pointing, behind her and across the invisible barrier. It was dark, but something was definitely moving between the trees. Something big, furry, with bright amber eyes.

Wolves. In plural.

-Shit - the king cursed, pulling Chara behind him and gritting his teeth.

The barrier didn't affect animals, only people. 

That's the reason no one left the castle after sunset. 

That's the reason they were screwed.

The first wolf stepped inside the property and the rest happened in a blur. Papyrus did his best to shield the small woman, summoning a single bone and aggressively waving it in front of him while stepping back from the barrier. He hit the first wolf that tried to jump on them, but the second one got his leg. The king had no flesh, but he still snarled in pain when the animal's jaw closed around his femur.

While Papyrus tried to get rid of that wolf, another one snapped the bone he was holding, then a giant paw hit his skull, its claws deeply scratching the bone around his right socket. This time he roared, blood rolling from his wounds and turning half of the world red.

Wait… Where was Chara?

The king turned his head around, one wolf still attached to his leg. Chara had her heavy stick in front of her and was trying to stop the last wolf from attacking. The animal was not intimidated. It prepared to jump.

-NO!! - Papyrus shouted in horror, reaching a hand in the woman's direction.

The world stopped for a second.

Something huge grew out in front of the king's open palm. A huge, monstrous, floating skull. The thing the king had just summoned opened its mouth and a beam of pure white energy was shot directly at the wolf attacking Chara.

When the animal fell to the ground, dead and disfigured, the whole pack turned at the gigantic skull, being immediately frightened by it. It didn't take a second shot. One by one, the wolves ran back into the forest, leaving that monstrosity behind.

A very trembling Chara kept staring at the floating skull, her hands still fiercely gripping on her heavy stick. That didn't look like Papyrus' skull. That didn't look like any skull she had ever seen. What on Earth was that?

-Huh - the king scratched his own skull, his good socket filled with wonder as he observed his creation - I didn't know I could do that.

Then, he passed out.”

I don't remember EVER writing an action scene before. I hope it didn't suck too much.

I actually wrote/draw this one like a month ago and never posted it. Oopsie!

The flower’s last words echoed inside the dark room.

Chara was paralyzed. A flower just talked to her and that would have been enough to leave any sane person stunned. But it was not the talking flower itself what affected Chara the most. It was not the inexplicable urge that had made her cross the room, remove the dome and touch the flower's glowing petals. No.

What affected Chara the most was what the flower had told her.

The woman stormed out.

Yeah, she was out of that castle. She would handle the barrier somehow. If there was any moment Chara would be able to break it out of pure spite, the moment was now.

-What the hell?! What d'ya think you're doing?? - Papyrus asked, incredulous, staring at the small woman in front of him.

The king had seen Chara leaving the castle, which was very strange because it was late and he had specifically told her not to leave the castle at night, since there were animals in the forest and the barrier didn't affect them. When Papyrus found her, Chara was attacking the barrier with a thick stick like a freaking mad woman. When hearing the monster's voice, the girl turned the stick at him.

-Stay away!! - she yelled, her fury easily visible even in the dark.

Papyrus stopped a few steps away from her.

-What? - he frowned at Chara, very confused - Did you hit your head or something? Chara, it's me. Papyrus.

-Well, Papyrus, I don't know who you are anymore!! - the woman spat, equally angry and hurt - Tell me this: Were you only being nice to me so I could fall in love with you and break the curse?!

The king's sockets grew wide. Shit.

There it is. Chara could see the truth in Papyrus' face, but that wasn’t even needed. The flower's words had been more than enough to convince her, because all the weird things that had been happening ever since she got to that castle suddenly made sense.

Why was a king being so receptive with a peasant? Why was she given a nice room and was treated like a noble? Why was Papyrus spending so much time with her? Why did he start flirting with her? Well, the explanation was pretty simple: That was never about her, it was about him. Him and his curse. Papyrus would have tried to seduce anyone that arrived at the castle.

And the worst thing is, it was working.

Chara may not be in love, but she had definitely grown fond of that skeleton.

She liked him.

She cared about him.

She trusted him.

And now she felt completely betrayed.

Short one. The calm before the storm.

"No. That couldn't be flirting… Could it? Papyrus was a king. Chara was a peasant. Plus, they have only known each other for… Wait, how long has she been in the castle again? Three weeks? Four?

Oh my, Chara was starting to lose track of time. 

In any case, why would the king be interested in her? They had fun moments together, sure, but that… That's what friends do, right? So couldn't Papyrus just be… Expressing his gratitude towards her friendship? And she was completely overreacting over his words? Oh my, that was it, she was overreacting! There was no reason to be freaking out about that brief interaction, definitely!

Except… The atmosphere in the library was weird the next day. Definitely. Both Chara and Papyrus seemed nervous and the few times they interacted there was that awkward tension that wasn't there before.

No wonder Chara got distracted when returning to her chambers later that night.

No wonder she got lost again in those endless dark corridors.

No wonder she ended up in a place she was definitely not supposed to be."

So I was initially bothered when I started failing on the rhythm of my posts here, but I ultimately decided I'll update this story whenever I feel like it. Casually. I’m not working this week so I’ve got the time :)

"-…So, I was thinking about building a moving platform for the bitties to change floors without needing to climb all the stairs - Chara declared from her side of the dinner table, addressing Alphys and Undyne.

The lizard woman took it personally.

-WHY would we need this? - she grunted, showing up all her tiny sharp teeth - Are you patronizing us just because we are small??

-Oh, no!! - Chara immediately denied it - I know YOU don't need it, Alphys. I was actually thinking about the kids. They said they wished they could visit their friends at the aquarium more, but going up so many stairs is hard for them.

After the curse started, the bitties built smaller steps between the regular steps of the stairs, so they could use it with their short legs. But that meant the new stairs were hundreds of steps long. Not an easy obstacle if you were not Alphys.

Napstaton looked at the girls over his glass of wine.

-It really is hard for the kids - he stated - And, you know, for the ones of us who don't have legs anymore. I haven't left this floor since forever.

He tilted the glass into the gap between his doors. Chara always finds it fascinating when object-type bitties eat or drink.

-I can give you rides while the platform isn't finished, you just have to ask me! - she told the wardrobe. He clasped his hands together in excitement.

-Oh my, thank you, beautiful! I appreciate it.

-B-but, Chara… - Undyne started, fidgeting - D-do you really know how to do this? A moving platform?

-Well, I have made some simple mechanisms at home to help with the housework, so I think I can do it! I feel like I should contribute to the castle somehow, since I'm also living here and eating your food and all.

-You don't have to, my dear - Toriel affirmed, kindly - You are our guest.

-But I want to…

-I get you, Chara!! - Sans turned to join the conversation, enthusiastic as usual - They always say I don't need to work since I'm royalty, but I never let it stop me! It's not good to feel useless!

-Yes, that's right! - the girl agreed, cheerful - Hey, you can help me if you want to!

-Wowzers!! I would love to!!

After a few minutes, Sans looked at Papyrus' plate.

-You are done, good! - the bitty grinned - You should be a gentleman and escort Chara to her room to make sure she doesn't get lost!

-Lost? - Papyrus frowned, confused. Chara had been living with them for a few weeks then, she couldn't STILL be getting lost on the way to her room… Could she?

-Oh, it's ok, you don't have to! - the girl said, embarrassed - I… I rarely pick the wrong path now.

-He insists!!

And that's how, a minute later, they were both walking through the castle's corridors. They were having a light talk about their day and Chara was excitedly telling the king about how the kids took her to meet the aquarium and the monsters who lived there. On the inside though, Papyrus was a nerve wreck.

He knew he was supposed to be doing something to charm Chara. “Tell her she look pretty”, "smile", "be a gentleman", "stand straight and look tall", all the crap the others kept telling him whenever the girl was not around. But, heck… He sucked at that. His only experience with women had involved a few escorts before the curse started and it had been fine, but… Let's be honest… You don't need to try hard with escorts. You just need money, and he was literally royalty.

Also, he was a handsome young human by then and now he was a big, scary monster. That surely didn't help his confidence.

Papyrus looked at Chara, who was still cheerfully talking about the aquarium. Welp, at least she didn't seem to think he was scary anymore. That was good. She seemed to like him. And he liked her. He just needed to make her see that their unusual friendship could become something more.

They had arrived at Chara's room. The girl smiled at him while opening her door.

-Thanks for bringing me here, Papyrus! Good night.

-G… good night - crap, she was closing the door, he had to do something - Hey, wait.

Chara stopped, looking up at him with curious eyes. Papyrus placed one hand on the door's frame, nervously sweating.

-Chara, I… I know being stuck in this castle sucks and all - he blurted, mentally kicking himself. Why was that so damn hard?! - It's just… I just want you to know that things have been sucking a lot less since you got here.

The girl blinked, stupified.

-Oh - she blinked once more, at a loss of words - Oh. I…

-Good night.

Just like that, the king turned around and walked away, his whole skull burning in embarrassment. HOW do people even do this?? If he wasn't born rich and couldn't pay for it, he probably would have never gotten any woman in his life.

Hell… What a shitty thing to realize about himself.

Chara kept looking at Papyrus' back as he walked away, completely petrified.

What the hell was that??”

If you really think about it, it's so weird that everyone - including the Beast / Papyrus - knows that he needs to fall in love with the new girl. Like… You can't control your emotions. All you can really do is set a mood and hope for the best.

"When the newcomer arrived literally out of nowhere, Chara squeaked, pulling her dress down and covering her naked leg. Alright, Napstaton could be a wardrobe, but he was a MALE wardrobe, he couldn't see her in that state.

-M… Milord - the human babbled, her cheeks heating while he approached them.

The wardrobe released an impatient exclamation.

-Enough with the "milord", beautiful - he dismissingly waved one hand in her direction - If you are gonna call the king by his name, you might as well use mine. Also, you don't need to stress so much about covering yourself - he sounded amused - I happen to like the same thing you do, you know? Only member of the "V" team here is Undyne.

-N-N-Napstaton!! - Undyne exclaimed, mortified - Oh my God, you c-can't speak like this in front of Chara!! 

-What, she's not a child!

-No, b-but she's still too young, l-look what you did to her!

Even before hearing Undyne's words, Chara knew she was absolutely red, because her face was on fire. Oh lord, how could the wardrobe speak so openly about that kind of stuff? No one did, at least not in front of young single women like her. She couldn't even speak after hearing his words.

Undyne was pressing one hand over her forehead, still scolding the newcomer.

-Also, you can't storm in when I have a p-patient, you know that!

The noble bitty released a dramatic sigh.

-Right, right, forgive me, both of you - he said, waving his hand in a dismissive gesture once again - I'm just here because I've heard about a ruined dress. Oh my. What a poor dress indeed.

Napstaton touched the torn fabric of Chara's dress, contemplative. After a moment, he pressed both of his hands together and proceeded to sing. As soon as the beautiful clear notes started, the girl's dress proceeded to fix itself, magic running through the seams and making the threads shine until the piece was whole again. The process didn't take one minute. 

-Wow! - Chara exclaimed, absolutely marveled. That was the first time she witnessed the wardrobe's magic - Wow, that was amazing!! Thank you so much, mil… Napstaton.

The noble put one hand on his "chest", visibly proud.

-No problem, beautiful. That's what my magic is for. I can also create new clothes or modify the ones you have, in case you ever get sick of them.

-I will keep that in mind - the human smiled at him, truly grateful.

-Now, will you be a darling and give me a ride to the second floor?

After putting her boot back on and thanking Undyne once again, Chara placed the tiny wadrobe on her shoulder and walked off the office. The human was silent, suddenly wondering about things she was not sure she shouldn't be thinking about.

-Speak. I know you want to speak - the bitty gave her encouraging taps on her shoulder after spying on Chara's awkward face - Ohh, is it something you shouldn't say? Go on, I love this. I won't tell anyone.

The girl briefly glanced at Napstaton, biting her lips. She could swear the wardrobe was smiling at her, even without a mouth.

-I… - Chara started, unsure about how to formulate her thoughts. Her face was already heating - You said… Back there you said you like the same thing I do - she inhaled before blurting out the weirdest question she had ever made - How do you know what I like? I could have a girl waiting for me in my village. Or even a wife?

Oh man, she really shouldn't have asked. That was totally inappropriate, young women like her should never discuss these matters. But gosh, she was SO curious.

The bitty's reply was immediate.

-Yeaaah, no - he emphatically shook his whole body before making a wide gesture towards her head - Darling, you have "straight virgin girl" written all over your face. You're not gay, much less married. Even if you hadn't just panicked over your scandalous naked ankle in Undyne's office, it's just there. You obviously like men - he quickly tap his "forehead" twice - Some people call it a radar.

-Oh - Chara blinked, impressed - I wish I had one.

-A man or a radar?

-A radar!!

Yeah, that had been the most awkward conversation Chara had ever had. 

And, speaking of awkward… Wouldn't it have been less awkward - not to say way easier - if Papyrus had taken Undyne to the crater to heal her instead of carrying Chara inside?...”

"ML, Beauty and the Beast is supposed to have happened centuries ago, so it's not historically accurate for people to be open and accepting towards non-straight people or even trans people in this story!!"

"Oh. Ok. Chara was covered in dirt and scratches and the king was carrying her. No biggie. His body was very firm and... Warm? Huh. That part was a bit surprising. By the way, wasn't that the first time they were actually touching? Her dress was in the way, obviously, but still. Touching. The king.

The girl couldn't avoid a nervous laughter from escaping her lips. Damn, she was feeling so awkward.

-I… Thank you - Chara weakly managed to say, unsure if she should hold him someway or if that would only make things even weirder.

Papyrus grinned at her.

-No problem, little girl.

He then proceeded to walk like she weighed nothing at all - which was actually not far from the truth, he was quite strong and Chara was a small woman. She was also visibly bashful about being carried by him.

Hell, Undyne was a GENIUS.

Truth is, Hapstablook had called Undyne, not Papyrus. But, where most people would only see a girl with a lesion, that doctor saw an opportunity. For a gallant rescue. She had the ghost call the king and tell him to specifically carry Chara inside.

Genius. Papyrus had the girl in his arms and he had a perfectly valid excuse for it. She was very light and soft, and her nervousness was endearing. Even if it ends in nothing, he was honestly glad for that little moment.

After carefully climbing out of the crater, it was an easy walk to the castle. Too silent, though.

-So, hum… - the king started, unsure - 'The hell were you doing down there?

He mentally facepalmed. Hell, that had been such a stupid question. Chara smiled anyway, though.

-Oh, you know, I just decided to check the crater's bottom with my face. No biggie - she pointed at the dirt on her cheek for emphasis.

That made Papyrus snort.

-Good one. Be careful where you step, by the way. Undyne can easily heal small bruises, but things like broken bones or deep cuts are not instantly fixable with her magic. Let's see what she can do for you.

-I don't think it's broken… - gosh, she hoped it wasn't - But yes, I will be more careful. I just really wasn't expecting to find a giant hole in the middle of nowhere.

-You managed to fall in the only hole of the property, congratulations.

-Yay me.

But the girl's smile quickly vanished. That wasn't unnoticed by the king.

-Is your foot hurting a lot? - he asked, frowning - You don't seem too good.

-No, it only hurts when I put my weight on it. It's just… - Chara paused, glancing at the direction they came from - That's where you used the bomb, right?

-...Right.

-I… It must have been a huge explosion.

Papyrus immediately understood what Chara was upset about.

-It was. 

He walked in silence after that.

That day, after a year of preparations, when the explosion finally happened and created that huge crater, the barrier remained intact, but everyone's hope was shattered to pieces. That last failed attempt at freedom and the years that followed were usually referred to by the inhabitants of the castle as the great depression. No wonder Chara was shaken. Everyone had been there. Some of them still were.

-Here we go.

Feeling just a bit resentful of having to let her go, Papyrus carefully placed Chara on the single couch of Undyne's office. They actually had a whole infirmary in the castle, but since no one except the king needed a regular size bed after the curse started, Undyne eventually moved to a smaller room. 

-O-oh my God!! - the fish monster exclaimed, horrified - My la… Chara, you are a mess!! What happened?

The human smiled at the bitty. She wasn't the only one who forgot she was allowed to use actual names. 

-So, apparently I've managed to fall in the only hole of the property - Chara explained, bashfully laughing - I don't mind the scratches, but I think I really hurt my ankle, so if you could please take a look…

-O-oh, certainly! I c-can heal the scratches too, but let's take care of this ankle first!

The two women turned at Papyrus, who just stared back at them.

-What? - he frowned, confused.

Well, he felt stupid, that one was pretty obvious. There were certain parts of women's bodies that couldn't be shown in front of men. The king had never understood the logic of those rules, because lots of ball dresses left half of a girl's breasts exposed, but lord forbid them from ever showing their ANKLES. 

Papyrus led to the door anyway. He could be a king but he didn't make those rules and he definitely didn't feel like fighting them.

Oh, right... I still haven't published the part of the story in which Chara first arrives at the castle. Truth is, I've skipped it because I'm not happy with the scene Chara first meets Papyrus. I've changed the sketch a lot of times and I'm still not happy with it. I will write something that makes me happy or I'm not publishing it at all and leaving it open to your imagination.

But yeah, the first monster Chara saw was Hapstablook. She did not take it well.
