The Orange Bros This piece was commissioned by @_.chiim._ After along and exhausting spring break full of history assignments I’m glad to be chipping away at my backlog. This was a relatively straight forward piece to get back in the swing of things. It was fun to get a chance to draw these guys. Constantly trying to push my understanding of lighting and texture more. I also got to actually draw the “diaper/butt”piece on the commando armor to be more accurate to the OG game, most depictions use the simplified BF2/TCW flat swooping shape and it always bugged me. I also wish more people used the lights attached to the hips more, so I implemented it to mine. Breakdown for the helmet concept I sent off to @mandalorianbusiness to model for his remastered realistic adaptation. The goal was to find how Rex would realistically and physically be able to weld a P1 visor to his P2 helmet despite the two having different depths. I wanted to make sure I maintained the classic weld points (yellow - slide 2) without adding a whole bunch of extra ones and cluttering up the helmet. Thus making the P1 and P2 visors not lining up. I hand waived this as rex cutting material away to fit the shape of the P1. Way I see it it’s welded slightly raised top of the P2 to give the feeling of a DIY patch job. I also yellowed the P1 part to make it feel older and sell the patchiness. “Blind allegiance makes you a pawn. A real leader protects his squad.” I’ve been working on this piece on and off for a while now. Constantly talking with @kaminoan_customs and @mandalorianbusiness trying to build a “live action” accurate adaptation of the character from animation. His armor is a modified republic commando kit with some unique additions. Some changes found through model comparison and available concept art include: - an overall slimmer fit to the base commando gear - a standard clone body glove (undersuit) - simplified gauntlets with added plates - standard clone hand plates - standard clone thigh armor - unique helmet - modified cod piece with “shield” like cup and flipped inset above it. - An amazing helmet @mandalorianbusiness collaborated on directly and the downloadable STL files are available on his Patreon now! The goal with the helmet was to stay true to the likeness depicted in the show, while at the same time, implementing all the “realistic“ Republic commando elements, as well as the other clone/storm trooper like elements on his design. I drew the turnaround based on some sketches I have done since the first season. There were some modifications that needed to be made to make it look right in 3-D space and looking at the reference sheets for Hunter posted on starwars.com we found that there is a roundness to the tubes along the side and back of his helmet and even though it felt like breaking the commando look at first, we implemented it. And it was the last bit that really helped sell the likeness of the helmet. It was surreal seeing the depiction of his helmet I’ve even sketching for so long fully realized In 3D space, and @mandalorianbusiness deserves a thousand thanks for making that happen. And I look forward to more collaborations in the near future. Ps. There’s a couple additions I made myself. I added foot plates and seam lines consistent with the Kenobi show clone depiction, as well as some that I consistently see in many Republic Commando cosplays so that this depiction would feel as believable to wear as possible.
