Assignment #12: Event Flash Draft
Ledes:
1. Hard: It’s day 1 of Couture Fashion Week 2019 and the location that the event is taking place is on 4 W 43rd Street, New York, NY. Today, there would be three shows held at the venue; one at 3 pm, and the others at 6 and 9 pm.
2. Soft: Couture Fashion Week is like nothing I have experienced before in my life which can be the same instance for many others.
3. Blind: Through everyone's point of view, you can also see that the fashion world is a very complicated and hectic place to be in.
Event Draft:
Headline: An Experience of the Fashion World captured by First Time Worker
It’s day 1 of Couture Fashion Week 2019 and the location that the event is taking place is on 4 W 43rd Street, New York, NY. Today, there would be three shows held at the venue; one at 3 pm, and the others at 6 and 9 pm. There is an evident tension clear in the air as everyone is trying to move around and get the models, the clothes, the red carpet, and the runway stage ready for the first of the 3 fashion shows this day. I obviously got to observe the scene in front of me because I was working as a check-in or rather in fancier terms: the receptionist.
As the hectic lifestyle of working at fashion shows are played in front of me, I take note on who’s who and the in’s and out’s of what is deemed to be important in this field. I notice there is a separate room for each section: the room directly in front of me which is the left of the entrance is the hairdressing room where models were sat after getting their makeup done in the room next to where the receptionists were sitting, well to our left again. Then, to the right where the coat checks in are the small but fitted red carpet, as well as the waiting/dressing area for models. In the center in front of the outside entrance is the doors that open up to the runway show.
Soon enough the doors are open to the Vip’s, the guests, and the press. Myself along with 7 other people were each checking in our sections and mine was the press. As we all got that out of the way, we each agreed on splitting turns to go see the show at each time because there needed to be someone on each section in case someone else came. While waiting for the show to end- effortlessly bored after doing my job, I noticed this huge fluffy dog getting its picture taken on the red carpet. It was a humorous sight to see and I got caught watching it so the photographer asked if I wanted a picture with to and I declined because I have a fear of dogs or animals in general.
Finally, at 6 pm, it was my turn to watch the show and it was magical. The dresses made by the designer was magnificent and it was an ode to my South Asian culture with the fabric and patterns that she used. Although being that it was my first Couture fashion show, I didn't expect the models to stop on the runway and be taken photos of by the photographers whom might I add, were really rude, shouting at the models as if they were just lap dogs. I was proud of the models that just strutted away with a question, and also the ones who turned around with sass and gave them a little time to take their photos.
After the show, the models came out on the red carpet and took group photos before taking individual ones with other photographers around the venue. It was crowded by the end of each show but it quickly dispersed as people got checked in to head to next show. At the end of this eventful night, my boss decided to surprise us all with bottles of champagne to which those who drank ( not including me) shared a toast to a successful event.

BEAUTY BRAWL: How inclusive are beauty brands around the world?
Data Questions:
1. How were the 40 shades picked? Was there a specific tone of light/dark that it had to be?
2. Were they tested on people with a close range to the color?
3. How did they find people to test it on? Was it random?
Human Questions:
1. Why didn’t they just ask actual people for their opinions?
2. Is there a reason why certain countries were chosen? Why not in Brazil where there are a diversity of all skin tones, not majority over-ruling.

Assignment #9: Radical Revision
How Life as a Young Muslim Bengali-American is like in Comparison to the “Perfect Life” of Billie Eilish
“Billie Eilish could be living her life but she could be suffering from the fame and the thing is we don’t know, so we can’t really say that she’s having the time of her life. Of course, she is privileged, but so are we in our own way and maybe she has more things than we do but then we also have things out she doesn’t have.” - Tisha, 16.
We often place celebrities in the limelight that causes us to assume that they have the most perfect life, with money and fame but then we forget that they have a life that we don’t know about. Celebrities come in all ages, and so comparing them to people who live a less publicized life makes people realize all the things they benefit from not wanting a “perfect life” such as Tisha whom I got the pleasure to interview.
Tisha is a family friend, currently living in Long Island with her family consisting of her parents plus her two brothers, one younger and one older. She is sixteen and a Muslim Bengali-American. I asked her if she was willing to do an interview for me for my journalism and design class, and she agreed so we met up on February 13, 2019, at Queens Central Library, where her older brother drove her there. As she walked in, I immediately took notice of her dressed in a pink sweater and jeans, oblivious as to what the interview was going to be about.
At first, I was generally curious to get her point of view on someone who is known in the media as well as in our generation. I chose to talk about Billie Eilish who is close to Tisha’s age being that she is 17. Of Course, having done my personal research on how Tisha knows of Billie Eilish, I noticed Tisha’s activity on social media that relate to the subject, especially when she liked her posts or quite often recommended me her latest music/music videos. Right off the bat after I had asked her “So what are your thoughts on Billie Eilish?” she retaliated on my question by asking her own: if I had watched the latest music video.
I haven’t but she told me a synopsis of it saying that it was creepy and she watched it at 12 am, for whatever reason unknown to even herself. However, her thoughts on the latest music video for “Bury a Friend”, is not wrong even after I watched it. Besides talking about her music style to which Tisha explains, “people hype her music too much (rolls eyes), especially her videos, like chill out it’s good but don’t get crazy, we go in depth of how exactly Billie Eilish’s success has affected her own views of how her lifestyle compares to her own as someone who’s privacy isn’t always being invaded. Noting that Billie Eilish gets to travel around the world where she can’t even go out in general in terms of going out with her friends unless it’s with her parents or brother to places like Walmart or CVS.
One of the things that Tisha mentioned that struck me was when I asked her what the reason on why she couldn’t go out as much, she says, “maybe it’s because of cultural influences like girls just can’t get as much freedom as other boys can but that’s a whole other story.” She explains that many people can have assumptions on a celebrity’s life because we don’t really understand their life in the background but on the things that we see in the media such as Billie Eilish getting to travel as a young teenage girl does have something to do with cultural differences.
Tisha also says, “I see how she’s losing a lot of things that we’re gaining, like the high school life we’re experiencing”, when we were talking about how Billie Eilish might not be getting the same opportunity as regular teenagers do such as going to an actual High School because she always sees her on social media showing places that she is traveling to or often dong shows around the world, so she assumes that she isn’t going to school or she’s being home-schooled. Tisha believes that seeing Billie Eilish success, there are things that she doesn’t have but things that she also has. She, of course, would like to travel because that was something she expressed through her emotions when she told me that she really “want to travel so bad”.
At the end we concluded our interview by Tisha giving her honest thought on how she viewed Billie Eilish in comparison to her own and others by saying, “Billie Eilish could be living her life but she could be suffering from the fame and the thing is we don’t know, so we can’t really say that she’s having the time of her life. Of course, she is privileged, but so are we in our own way and maybe she has more things than we do but then we also have things out she doesn’t have.”

Design Analysis
https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/deroy-murdock-jussie-smollett-attack-melts-down-as-leftists-self-immolate
First of all, the picture is just misleading especially with the situation, so having a picture with Jussie Smollett smiling brightly was not something that really looked good to me. Secondly, the emphasis on the word “attack” makes readers already get a sense that the writer doesn’t view Smollett as a victim instead makes it look as if the “attack” wasn’t actually an attack.
Thirdly, the first sentence of the article is this:
I don’t really understand that for which it’s confusing and that’s something you shouldn’t do as a journalist: write things that can be hard for some people to understand

730 words Interview with Tisha

Aziz’s Map: Story Ideas
1. Riding your bike on the sidewalks is illegal but should skateboarding in parks with an open walking area be illegal as well? Especially at Washington Square Park with so many people spread around doing their own thing or protesting, showing art, etc.
2. The reason for protesting. Asking people why they choose to protest in an area where there are many children, so wouldn’t it scare them? Where do you get the permission to do this? Why do people choose areas around the fountain to do their protests? What significance does it have to create a change when protesting at parks.

Assignment #3: Reaction to Texts
Both texts, What Is a Designer? by Bruno Munari from Design As Art and The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman, set the tone of what is right and what is wrong in terms of how things should be recorded or seen. They show how it is hard to work with things that many people may not be familiar with such as when Norman talks about how complex the use of modern devices is. He says that because everything is already is designed, a lot of things “-have to be designed, sometimes informally, sometimes precisely recorded and specified.” (4), meaning that in order to be seen as a different and unique designer, it’s a lot harder now to do that because most of the designs have come out already.
Like Norman’s ideas portrayed in the text, it connects to Munari’s text about what it means to be a designer and the generality of what it is. From the very beginning sentence of the text, he defines what a designer is saying, “He is a planner with an aesthetic sense.” (1). When talking about what Norman said about the modern devices, if you’re not your own aesthetic then you want interesting. In journalism, you have to plan out how you can grab a reader's attention and one of the first steps is to have a good design. So if you don’t know the purpose of what a designer does then you won’t be successful. Munari further explains what a designer is when he writes “The designer is therefore the artist of today, not because he is a genius but because he works in such a way a to re-establish contact between art and the public, because he has the humility and ability to respond to whatever demand is made of, him by the society in which he lives, because he' knows his job and the ways and means of solving each problem of design.” (4) it gives off tones of responsibility like a designer has a certain responsibility to put out their work to make a difference one way or another.

Assignment #2 : Washington Square Park and Two Stories

1. I haven’t done the research yet but I believe people say that this park belongs to NYU’s campus space. I know that their buildings surround the park but why should it be owned by only them? It feels territorial especially with the New School right next to it. Also, the New School buildings are close to Union Square Park but why don’t we claim it as ours like NYU did with Washington Square Park? That’s one story that can develop.
2. Another story that can develop are the many acts and artists that come to this park to showcase their talents. Why do they choose this public park? What is so special about doing it here, rather than any other public parks? How do they get permission/permit or whether they do get permission/permits? It’s interesting to always see different and new things every time people come to this park.

Assignment #1: Journalism vs. Not Journalism and Good/Bad Design.
Journalism:
1.) https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/content/france-outlaws-catcalling-street-harassment-women/
This article brings attention to the issue of catcalling and how harassment towards females on the streets is a real thing. This piece talks about how France found a way to reduce/outlaw catcalling and the writer explains the whole ordeal of outlawing the issue as a whole.
2.)
youtube
This episode from The Oprah Winfrey Show is a form of journalism because she is showing her audience and viewers that there are people out there, especially the young girl in this one, who is schizophrenic and how it can affect people in different ways. Oprah shows how the young girl is affected and it gives a personal viewpoint of the disorder.
Not Journalism: 1.) https://people.com/
Most of the time magazines such as People Magazine quite often talk about celebrities and their day to day lives. Just noting what they are doing on Sunday afternoon or talking about their run-ins with harsh paparazzi isn’t anything new. Also, magazines can spin a rumor without having factual evidence so therefore it isn't actually journalism.
2.)
youtube
Trevor Noah often talks about the current issue and gives his opinions/jokes about what story he is discussing. Though he adds evidence and actually talks about the facts like many other talk show hosts, it is not journalism because everyone already knows what is going on, they are just adding in their thoughts to it.
Good Design: 1.) https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/24/us/march-for-our-lives/index.html
Pictures of what actually happens at rallies can be used to cover a story and it gives the true emotion of what is happening in that environment. CNN provided many pictures and videos from the March or Our Lives rally that shows how the issue of gun laws that students, parents, celebrities, etc. are fighting to change.
For example:

2.) Magazines such as Teen Vogue has a very high rate of readers and so their covers have the faces of women who are well-known advocates of Women Empowerment along with a cover story, it really gives young girls something that they want to read/learn more about because they see their favorite celebrities on a popular magazine such as Amandla Stenberg.

Bad Design: 1.) https://www.thesun.co.uk/
News outlets such as The Sun only want to know the dramas of society and celebrities. They provide stories about based evidence from peoples submissions of stories so they could be either be fake or real, no one knows except the person who sent it in.
2.)
youtube
Different types of media that are spread around on social media like wildfire can seem to look real and news outlets will use that video to produce stories that are false. To exemplify, the video of Trump at a campaign getting scared of the Mexican Music that is played suddenly is obviously fake, however, videos like these grab the attention of news outlets because so many people are suddenly talking about it and then at the end, they just produce something false.
