Love God Greatly: Jesus Our Everything The message of Hebrews is the superiority of Christ and His ministry. After explaining how Christ is superior to the angels, the author of Hebrews explained Christ’s superiority to Moses. Moses was a servant of God; Jesus is the Son of God. Moses testified to the promises of God; Jesus fulfilled God’s promises. Moses led and ministered to the people of Israel; Jesus is the creator and sustainer of Israel, and all of His people past, present, and future. Jesus alone is holy and deserving of our praise. For even though Moses and the leaders of the past laid the foundations of our faith, Jesus is the builder, sustainer, and fulfillment of all things.  Prayer: Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that You alone are worthy of my praise. Help me remember Your holiness. I believe You are greater than Moses, greater than the angels, and greater than all. You alone are holy. Help me live in a way that honors You each and every day. Love God Greatly: Jesus Our Everything Jesus is superior, beginning first with His superiority and authority over the angels. The angels indeed have a crucial role in God’s kingdom, as ministers to serve His people. However, Jesus is far superior to the angels. Jesus is the one whose throne is established forever. The focus of Jesus’ superiority is on who He is. He is the eternal Son of God, who always is and always will be. He will reign forever. He has destroyed sin once and for all, imputing us with His righteousness. His righteousness and faithfulness sustains all things, including all of the uncertainties of our lives. Prayer: Jesus, I recognize Your majesty. You alone are righteous and You have chosen to grant me Your righteousness by grace alone. Help me believe Your sacrifice is enough and not attempt to earn my salvation by works or actions. I believe You are holy and righteous and I know I desperately need You. Love God Greatly: Jesus Our Everything Hebrews described the deity of Christ, explaining how Jesus is the exact representation of God, the one who holds all life on earth. He alone can do this because He is God.  Jesus paid for all the sins of humanity. He cleansed us from all our sins and evil deeds to make a way for us to have a relationship with God both now and in eternity.  When Jesus' work was finished, He sat at God’s right hand. This shows His authority and legitimacy as the Messiah, the promised son of David.  Jesus is superior to all. He is superior to the prophets, to the former priests, to Scripture, to David, to creation, and even to the angels. He alone is worthy of our praise! Prayer: Lord Jesus, I recognize that You are superior to all. Open my eyes to see how You alone are worthy of praise. Allow me to see the ways I put other things in life, even good and positive things, ahead of You. I want to worship You and follow You with my whole heart and life. Love God Greatly: Beattitudes In a deeply broken and sinful world, it is easy to become overwhelmed with suffering and succumb to fear. When our perspective is limited to the earth, we will have anxious hearts. Yet God commands us to be strong and not fear and offers a mighty promise: He will come to save us. An eternal perspective will give us hope. God's promise to us is that in our persecution, in our suffering, in our doubts and our fears, He is with us. Our suffering is not a sign that He has abandoned us, but a reminder of the promise He has made to redeem our broken earth, to end suffering and death, and reconcile us to Him forever. We can choose not to fear—not because we push down our feelings and put on a brave face, but because He is our strength and our hope.  Prayer: God, thank You for Your promises! Thank You that You are faithful to come to our aid and rescue us. Love God Greatly: Beattitudes Scripture is clear that believers should expect persecution, but the account of the early church in Acts also shows that many people flocked to this growing community. How is this possible? The wealthy and powerful, the religious leaders, and the social insiders were persecuting the Christians, but the poor and marginalized, the religious outcasts, and the social outsiders were drawn to a faith that welcomed them with open arms. Remember, our faith was first embraced by the powerless, not the powerful. We are blessed when our convictions and faithful actions bring persecution upon us, and we are called to bless the ones who bring it. Rather than fighting back, exerting force against them, or persecuting in return, we are called to bless: to seek their flourishing and prosperity.  Prayer: Thank You, God, that You are with me in my suffering. Give me the strength to return persecution with blessing and kindness. Love God Greatly: Beattitudes When we experience deep suffering, we often wonder if God has abandoned us. Instead, He tells us to rejoice in our sufferings, because we know we belong to Christ and are blessed because of His presence. Suffering is not the result of the absence of God but often draws us to seek Him. Our persistent desire for His presence will remind us to place our hope in our future reconciliation of relationship with Him. This means that how we respond to suffering reveals what we think about God—as vindictive and angry or gracious and loving. We can cultivate patience and longsuffering in our lives when we consistently respond to suffering with joy and hope. Suffering is not part of God's design, but He is gracious enough to use it in our lives for good instead of evil.  Prayer: Thank You, God, for suffering with us. Thank You for not leaving us in our pain and sin, but making a way for us to be reconciled with You. Love God Greatly: Beattitudes God does not promise that we will have a more comfortable or better life on earth as believers. In fact, He promises that we will face difficulty, suffering, and opposition from the world. Jesus faced nothing less during His time on earth. He faced opposition at every turn.  It is not merely our beliefs that provoke hatred from the world but living godly lives. Living the way Jesus prescribes will lead us to face difficulties. But just as the living out the beatitudes will cause persecution, they are also the righteous way to respond to persecution. In the face of mistreatment and suffering, we are called to lay down our power for others, show mercy over and over again, and seek peace in our communities. When we are hated, we have no right to respond with hate but a gospel obligation to respond with love.  Prayer: Thank You, God, for enduring persecution and suffering for my sake. Love God Greatly: Beattitudes The poor in spirit, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers—these counter-cultural and disruptive people will be met with persecution. The world does not know what to do with themr. These radically unusual qualities will sometimes be met with suffering.  Note that it is not persecution in general that brings blessing, but persecution on Jesus' account. When Christians are rude, self-serving, or arrogant, and face retribution, we are not blessed. This is not an open pass to bring condemnation on ourselves, but comfort in times when our refusal to play by the world's rules is met with backlash. The ones who refuse to build a kingdom for themselves are promised the kingdom of God.  Prayer: God, thank You for promising comfort in my suffering.
