Just realizing Shungiku Nakamura was 21 years old when she first released Junjou Romantica! 😳

If you’ve kept up with the manga, you’d know the art & story has evolved so much since its debut. Nakamura is in her 40’s now, so it makes sense the characters she created two decades ago would mature too. 🐰🧸 (Especially Usagi-san!)

Tbh, I have a hard time recommending the series today because of the problematic behavior in the beginning. Yaoi in general has issues and JR is definitely guilty, portraying the culture of its time.

But I have mixed feelings, because believe it or not, as the series progresses, Misaki and Usagi’s relationship becomes so beautiful and more human in recent years. The series has always nailed comedy and emotional depth, and that’s the reason I fell in love with it when I was 15.

The most recent arcs are the strongest, but I’m afraid without a season 4 & 5 anime adaptation, most fans will remain unaware of the series’ shift.

(Just look at the difference between these two manga covers. Their body language speaks volumes!)

Yes I’m biased because I love Junjou Romantica.

But I’m now viewing the outdated themes through the lens of an author who was quite young when she started this series. I’m a little more forgiving because of how far she has come.

Trick-or-treating by moonlight, winning love by daylight 🌙

If there had been a Halloween episode in Sailor Stars, you know it would’ve been canon that they all went trick-or-treating together. Usagi wouldn’t miss a chance for free candy, and Seiya would’ve tagged along, insisting on keeping Odango safe because of full moon superstitions. 🌕🐺🍭🍫

The gang would’ve met up in costume, with Seiya playing a few pranks, and Usagi’s candy stash almost gone by the time Sailor Iron Mouse interrupts—turning a teenager handing out treats into a weird-ass phage called something like Sailor Draculara. 🧛‍♀️

Cue an emotional moment between Seiya and Usagi on their walk home, the kind that has me kicking my feet and fangirling, delusional enough to think they might actually end up together. 🤭😩

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Hard to believe I’m such a shipper yet this is my first time drawing a kiss!

I remember sketching this out after having a drink or two. The line art was so wobbly, but I was surprised how bold and carefree the doodle was. I didn’t get caught up in the details.🍷

Jearmin is such a sweet, solid ship. Jean’s bluntness is softened by Armin’s compassion, while Armin finds protection and support in Jean’s loyalty. 🐴 🐚

I love that they started as one character Isayama split, almost as if they complete each other. 🫶

I had a dream I existed in the AOT universe 😱

I stood on the cobblestone street of Shiganshina district, clutching a parchment notebook and quill. Here, I was an artist for a living. I flipped through the yellowed pages, seeing portraits and sketches of people in this world. 🖋️

Someone came up behind me, standing close. I turned to find Levi Ackerman, and my heart leapt to my throat. He was shorter than I anticipated, but way more intimating. His face looked serious as he snatched the notebook and started looking through it. 📒

There were drawings of Annie, Sasha, Hange, Miche…then Levi.

He paused on his own sketch; a side profile with his arms crossed. Clearly I hadn’t asked for permission, I just drew him while he wasn’t looking.

Levi turned page after page, to find the next dozen sketches were all of him! Even worse, the series of drawings depicting him with Erwin, both of them progressively wearing less clothes. Somehow all of my digital art ended up in there. 🙈

Levi looks at me, his expression blank as ever, and says in his deep drawl, “You draw me a lot.”

Um, yeah, Levi. I do. 🫠
