Today’s women’s history month post is about Sandra Equihua, artist, character designer and animator. Sandra is an artist with a visually distinct style who has had a hand in creating many great animated works, several of which she did with her husband Jorge Gutierrez.
Sandra was born in January 1976 in Tijuana, Mexico. As a student she attended Universidad Iberoamericana (IBERO) and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. She studied under artist Rafael Lopez, an award-winning illustrator from Mexico himself, while in San Diego. While studying with Lopez, she started to gain a more stylistic, creative flair and decided that her real love was with illustration and visual art. She would soon move to Los Angeles, California.
Sandra is a painter as well as an animator. Her work boasts brilliant color schemes and have been displayed in galleries both in America as well as Mexico. In 1994, she founded Mexopolis, a production company, with Jorge Gutierrez in Tijuana. The duo’s success and uniqueness comes from their love of not straying from their artistic vision, and being unafraid to make their works stylistically rich and diverse. The two married in 2001, and have a son named Luka.
Together, Sandra and Jorge created the show El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, about a child superhero named El Tigre from Miracle City caught in a conflict between White Pantera, his heroic dad and Puma Loco, his villainous grandfather. It dealt with subjects like family conflict and when to have fun as a child. The show won many awards, including Emmys and Annies, and aired on Nickelodeon.
More recently, the duo released their dream film The Book of Life, with studio Reel FX. The film revolved around the Mexican Day of the Dead, and a man named Manolo Sanchez trying to protect his friends from trouble at the hands of powers both supernatural and tangible. The film did well with critics and at the box office, and gained a sizeable fanbase. It also gained praise like a Golden Globe nomination for best animated film, and won the Annie Award for Best Character Design.
Sandra has designed characters for shows like Mucha Lucha (Kids WB), The Buzz on Maggie (Disney), and Wow Wow Wubbzy (Nickelodeon), as well as El Tigre and Book of Life. Sandra infuses her love of Mexican culture and her heritage into much of her work.
Sandra (along with Jorge) currently lives in Dallas, Texas. Their clients include the likes of Dark Horse Comics, Dreamworks, Scholastic, Cartoon Network, and Anima Estudios.
