We are seeing a lot of glow bugs/ fireflies again this summer, and I have been trying to capture some of the magic in different ways. Last night, the good old sky set up did the trick. I will experiment some more but I love the chaotic beauty in this one. It's a timelapse with a photo taken every 30 seconds, and the photos then stacked together.

I love stories about inevitable loss and grief, so I was always going to love outer wilds, but what sets it apart for me isn't necessarily how cleverly it depicts grief - though I do love that - but how unfailingly kind it is.
the solar system might be full of death, but it's also full of love. the nomai cherished and missed each other. they wrote reliable warnings and near-poems everywhere. they loved the universe with such joyful curiosity that they stranded themselves trying to understand it. they loved it enough that they refused to endanger the possibility of future life even if it could help them get to the objective they'd already risked so much for. and the hearthians play their friendly song near a campfire on every strange, frightening planet in the solar system.
and more than that, it's how the game never once mocks you when you fall for its deceptively honest tricks, never belittles you for feeling exactly what it intended to make you feel. your progress is never lost, most mistakes lead to happy discoveries, you always get to try again. and every time the game throws something devastating at you, it agrees with you that it is indeed truly devastating. and yet.
your campfire friends loved the beasties and the pine trees and the learning that will never be relevant again. solanum knows how tempting it is to linger, and why, and why it's impossible, and she tells you as much so gently.
the universe ends, and the game doesn't insult you by pretending to give you an out after all, it doesn't take back its apparent mercilessness and thus make all your feelings about it obsolete.
the universe ends. the nomai and the hearthians and all their homes are gone and will never be again. nothing can change that. that is all lost, and worth grieving.
and yet, there is life again.

Do you think they ever pieced together what happened or were they always like “wow that was a weird shared dream we both had” ?

For many of years I had this tradition of drawing Wirt and the beast once a year to see how much I have improved, then depression hit in 2023 and couldn't continue, but it left so really amazing art in the process

if you're a fan of turn-based JRPGs and don't mind random encounters, it's absolutely worth playing!
there are some complaints about the grind, but honestly if you explore and do some of the optional dungeons the grind really isn't that bad. it provides a range of stories across the different travelers, some that I found more interesting and satisfying than others. I thought the battle system was so much fun, but some people find it repetitive. it's not a perfect game, but it is one of my favorites ever and I highly recommend it.
also if you find yourself enjoying it, the second game has a lot of QOL upgrades and is also worth a play!
Have any of you folks played Octopath Traveler? And would you recommend it? Its on sale on Steam right now and I really need a comfortable game hole to escape into.
I'm experienced with old school turn-based JRPGs (FF4-10, CT, Lufia 1 and 2, Suikoden 1-3, SaGa Frontier, Skies of Arcadia, Xenogears, etc.) and I don't mind a bit of a grind, I just want a pretty game with an engaging story.
