CBD is one of over 80 active cannabinoid chemicals in the hemp plant.

There is nothing quite as frustrating as reaching the end of your teen years and hoping for clear skin, only to come to grips with the fact that acne may not end when your teen years do.  According to the International Dermal Institute,  “Clinical studies indicate that between 40 and 55 percent of the adult population age 20-40 are diagnosed with low grade, persistent acne and oily skin. According to the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, 54 percent of women older than age 25 have some facial acne.“
The numbers don’t lie.  So how can you tell if you have adult onset acne?  Before we get into the common symptoms, let’s discuss what acne is.
What is Acne?
The various types of acne
Acne is considered a disease.  There are varying grades of acne, ranging from grade 1 (mild) to 4 (severe.)  It involves the overstimulation of the sebaceous (oil producing) follicles and hair follicles of the skin.  At times it occurs in people who have a genetic predisposition.  Did your parents suffer from acne?  If so, the statistics say that three out of four children may suffer from it.  The activity of the sebaceous gland is stimulated by many factors, including the onset of puberty, hormonal fluctuations, pharmaceutical agents, stress, using inappropriate products on the skin, heat, friction, and humidity.
What Are The Signs of Adult Onset Acne
Keep in mind that acne can be triggered at any time in our life.  Most people fall victim during times of hormonal fluctuation or stress.  Some other signs that fit in with adult onset acne are:
It’s associated with combination skin:
I’ve seen people on my facial table who never broke out in their life until they hit their 20’s.  They have combination skin, and it was easy to manage as a teen.  But in their 20’s and older, stress levels rise with college, work, pregnancy, juggling with the work/life balance.  All this produces the environment that acne thrives in.
Redness persists:
The acne lesion in adult onset acne tends to leave what’s referred to as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.  This is redness that persists even after the lesion has healed.
Lesions heal more slowly:
The lesions don’t heal as quickly as they used to in your teens (assuming you broke out in your teens)
Breakout on the jaw line, chin, and neck vs the entire face:
Acne related to the teen years is generally spread all over the face.  It can also be seen on the back, chest, and shoulders.  This isn’t commonly seen in adult onset acne.  It is generally confined to the jaw line, chin, and neck.
Stress induced:
When your body is under stress, it alters the hormones in your body.  This pumps up the activity of the sebaceous glands, and the increase in oils leads to acne breakouts.  The stressors in life that lead to acne breakouts is compounded by the stress of having these breakouts.  This causes additional emotional distress, which leads to feeling more stress, which leads to more breakouts.  It is a vicious cycle.
These are a few of the signs and symptoms of adult onset acne.  What can be done if you, like me, suffer from adult onset acne?  In short, get plenty of rest, eat a well-balanced diet of whole, unprocessed foods, drink plenty of water and make sure you have a good skin care routine that includes cleansing morning and night, exfoliating daily, and moisturizing and protecting your skin with an SPF.  For more insight into the best skin care routine customized for you, contact me for a consultation.  You’ll receive 20% off of the items that I recommend to you from my private dispensary.

As your virtual skin care therapist, I need to ask you, how are you protecting your skin from those damaging UVA/UVB rays? It’s time to get serious out SPF.
