Truly truly truly what a payoff, didn't know where they were going but hot damn I love that Sage hedged her bets on the boys (and particularly Butcher and Mallory) not overcoming their trauma

It makes Narrative Sense™ that Butcher gave into his trauma and stumbled on his journey; he isolated himself from his support network and when things with Ryan went sideways he regressed

I loved Ryan's journey throughout the season; it truly made sense that Ryan wouldn't be swayed into being insane like Homelander but the trauma of being unable to trust any of the adults currently in his life is... a lot, and of course this super powered kid didn't let you trap him the moment you threatened his agency. Homelander has been a fucking terrible father, but that's perhaps the one warning of value he ever gave to Ryan.

Ryan is a whole character, but he's also the symbol for the generational trauma both Homelander and Butcher have failed to deal with, and are now passing along to him. The other children function similarly.

Frenchie and Kimiko's arcs felt unsatisfying, ultimately because their scenes felt unpolished; first draft. The bones are there, but it needed more work.

Felt similarly with Starlight, whose attack on Firecracker felt out of character but necessary for the plot. They could have squared that circle in a different way.

Once again, the handling of rape in The Boys is fucking abysmal this season. Hughie comes away completely unscathed after knowing he's been having sex with someone he didn't know who posed as his partner. Kripke, et al, you do understand men can be raped, right? Were there no aftereffects on Hughie from Tek Knight?

Truly a perfect arc for Ashley. I have loved how she persistently attempts to acquire patriarchal power for herself, culminating in her breaking into Homelander's office and taking Compound V.

Deep, my behated, rest in piss. Great arc and character. Love his design and writing. Black Noir was such a cool side character as well.

Firecracker's arc was interesting; she chooses to serve patriarchal power and suffers the impact of that choice. Very trad wife -> leopards ate my face pipeline.

Already missing A-Train, but I'm 90% sure he'll be back in the new season. I adored his arc of serving existing power structures and losing himself to them, only to find it in himself to be a hero. He'll be back, unless for scheduling reasons they truly don't have the time.

Hughie's arc overall felt messy; he was whumped but experienced very little growth. He did however solidify that he's at the end of his journey of learning to trust in humanity, rather than violence.

Victoria. I adored, truly adored her arc. I felt that she would heel-face turn, and I loved that her trust was betrayed at the end. Choosing to trust is dangerous, and her arc was ultimately a tragedy.

If there's a message of the season... There's not one, there's many. But ultimately it continues to quietly advocate for restorative justice, forgiveness and allowing imperfect people to grow and change. The protagonists continue to fall back into patterns of violence, and continue to ruin their chances at liberation because of it. That's not to say The Boys is a perfect analysis of these concepts by any stretch of the imagination, and certainly is more pragmatic than idealistic. But I've ultimately been very satisfied with their handling of many subjects, even if there have been some major stumbles this particular season.

I'm still a butchlander shipper but s4 made me miss the hell out of butchie. Even from a platonic standpoint, Butcher and Hughie's interactions were (to me) the best part of the show.
