The number of whites that treat AAVE like simlish instead of an actual dialect with specific rules, etc. is maddening actually

Here’s how to tell if a language is easy to learn
None of them are easy
They’re all stupid and terrible and will kick you in the nuts
That being said
Languages similar to ones you already speak
Languages you have a lot of motivation to learn
Languages that have a lot of resources and media to watch and/or listen to and/or read
So, if you’re reading this with relative ease (aka you speak English fluently) probably French or Spanish
Do whatever you want though idk
Don’t just choose a language based on how easy it is
Unless that’s what it takes to keep you motivated idk
Go learn Frisian or something

Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide
Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:
"I just want an identical experience to DL"
Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)
"I want a good audio-based app"
Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)
"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"
Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)
Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)
*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.
"I have a pretty neat library card"
Mango (Languages: So many and the endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)
Transparent Language: (Languages: THE MOST! Also the one that has the widest variety of African languages! Perhaps the most diverse in ESL and learning a foreign language not in English)
"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"
AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)
"I want SRS flashcards and I have an iphone"
AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone
"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"
lingory
"I want an app made for Mandarin that's BETTER than DL and has multiple languages to learn Mandarin in"
ChineseSkill (You can use their older version of the course for free)
"I don't like any of these apps you mentioned already, give me one more"
Bunpo: (Languages: Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Mandarin)

I’ve been listening to the people in the apartment below me have arguments for two years now and I still can’t figure out what language they’re speaking. The best I can narrow it down is like if Portuguese and Hebrew had a baby. Is that a common pidgin combination

first lesson was cancelled bc the teacher was in the hospital 😭 regardless, i will persevere 💪
gonna be starting French next week after putting it off for years, fingers crossed it won't be too bad considering my weird level of exposure to the language but zero actual study

Me when I'm learning Portuguese as a Spanish speaker, and I keep coming across cognates that are both irregular but in different ways
I've been learning Spanish recently and I can't stress enough how frustrated I get everytime an irregular verb is irregular

fun fact sometimes languages sound weird to u because they're not commonly spoken, and sometimes they're not commonly spoken because a concerted effort was made in the past to eradicate them from existence. so. maybe not something to play into.

language resources on the internet i love you. i cannot believe i can just start learning a language like that. i can lookup any word in seconds. i can find grammar explanations. there are teachers who put out whole videos for me to learn. amazing. i am so lucky.

I could never imagine not being intellectually curious. What do you mean you don’t know what Indo-European languages are.

how are the portuguese and turkish going? <:]
I'm realizing I never responded to a few asks I've gotten while I wasn't super active on langblr! Portuguese is going great! I think I was around an A2 2 years ago, and have worked my way up to B1 with some more self-study in addition to having an actual class. I don't expect myself to ever get fully fluent in it, but my goal is to eventually reach a B2 level and be fully conversationally fluent!
Turkish is going...rough. I missed about a month of classes while I had COVID, so I'm behind by a lot. I still plan on continuing to study it on my own and with private lessons on Italki. I don't really expect to ever get to a higher level than A2-B1 in it though, since it's more of a fun dabble language than one that I'm focusing on for its utility.
