WE ARE QUEER: VISUAL ARCHIVE PROJECT
For the world, for our families, for our friends, we have always been a subject of curiosity, bullying, and harassment.
But we are sick of this. We, Queer people, are sick of complying with the rules, the social fabric and the society, that can’t see us happy, that can’t see us in love, that can’t see us living our life, the way we want to.
For almost two decades, Nepali queer people have been fighting for equal rights, regardless of the fact that that society and the country have always made them, migrant to their own home. They have been silenced, beaten, harassed, and even killed. They faced discrimination and humiliation from their friends, families, society and the state. But still, nothing has stopped them. Their determination and perseverance are exemplary, and not only are they marching the flags for themselves, but they are definitely making things easy for the future generation as well.
To honour those people who have been fighting for equality, both on the frontline or in silent wars against queerphobia, we the team of Kaalo.101, initiated this visual archive project, WE ARE QUEER for this year’s Pride month.
The archive project is a documentation of Nepal’s queer movement, celebrating both small and big wins. It primarily is an online visual archive and showcases pictures of queer people, their struggles, their celebrations and many more.
With our collaborative effort, we hope to be successful in this project and hold space for discourses and create platforms for archiving queer history.

I'm about halfway through but if anyone is looking for a good book on asexuality this is definitely a recommended read! Angela Chen features a number of interviews in her book from fellow aces of many different backgrounds, and i find her writing so far to be a wonderful, educational, and validating experience.

Trying to figure out if you’re ace or aro can be so much harder than other sexualities because it’s like, trying to find the absence of something. Imagine you’re at a pond and you want to know if there are any turtles, or fish. Say you find a turtle and you’re like “great! Now I know there are turtles.” Or a fish, now you know for sure there are fish. Or you find both, and now you know for a fact there are both turtles and fish in the pond.
But like, if you don’t find any turtles it might be that there are no turtles or maybe you’re just really shitty at looking for turtles and maybe you THINK you saw a turtle over there or maybe it was just a stick. Maybe there are only a few turtles. Maybe you need to do something special to find the turtles. Maybe a bunch of these rocks are actually turtles but you couldn’t tell them apart. Maybe there are no turtles. You have no idea. Meanwhile some people are saying “Oh there have to be turtles! You’ll find them eventually ;)” or “How many turtles have you found in your pond?” or “Try planting some vegetables at the shore to attract the turtles.” Or “Oh no! What disaster happened to your pond that there are no turtles?” And you’re just standing there wet with an empty net and a tired expression.
But whatever because whether there are turtles or fish or not your pond’s ecology works just fine without them because that’s what eco-communities do they form a system around what they have. You aren’t missing anything if you don’t have turtles you just have a pond system without turtles. If someone tried to change you by pouring a bunch of turtles into your pond it would probably fuck something up.
So you don’t have to be entirely sure. You don’t have to search every inch of the damn pond before you can decide there are probably no turtles. If you want to take the aro or ace label because you think it fits go for it. And if you do find your turtles you can rename the pond. That’s fine.

As a lesbian who used to identify as aro/ace, I just wanna say that I'm never going to stop supporting the aro/ace community. It was a big part of my personal journey and I really valued being part of a group that's so open to people exploring their identity. If you don't believe that aro/ace identities are valid and belong in the lgbt+ community, I don't want you on my blog

This year, AUREA is leading the new Aro Census: a community-wide survey of people on the aromantic spectrum. The purpose of the census is to gain knowledge and through this, a better understanding of the aromantic community.
Participation is limited to persons identifying on the aromantic spectrum. If you are interested in potentially participating, follow the link above for more information.
We’d like to reach aromantic people who aren’t in touch with aro communities through social media, so please share with others who may be interested.
