it’s autism awareness/acceptance month!!

one thing i’ve seen people say these past few years is that we need autism acceptance, not autism awareness. and i very much understand where these statements come from!! often “autism awareness” is framed in an ableist light by allistic people. and of course that sours the term. i’m very weary about how “autism awareness” is framed myself. but i still think we need it.

“but people already know what autism is! we need acceptance now.” i find this statement confusing because yeah! it’s true, but it’s not fully understanding what awareness means here. and awareness and acceptance aren’t mutually exclusive, and they can happen simultaneously. people generally do know of autism, but awareness of what it really is, and how autistic people are really like, is astonishingly slim. i don’t think we can say we’re “past” awareness when the public perception of autism can still be so ableist and inaccurate. awareness means full awareness of what autism is, not just awareness of its existence. and it’s a key step to acceptance too.
