note: bread in general is good as an offering and for grounding. However, you can add toppings such as sigils and herbs depending on your intent.

you'll need:
3 cups warm water
2 1/4 (1 pkg) dry yeast
1 tbsp sugar
6 cups flour
3 tsp salt
for topping:
melted butter
rosemary; blessings, positivity
basil; happiness, money
garlic; protection
shredded cheese (opt)
in a large bowl, combine water, yeast, and sugar. let sit until bubbly (5 min)
add flour and salt. mix until combined into a slightly sticky dough. cover loosely with plastic wrap and a towel. let rise for 3 hours.
preheat oven to 450 degrees. melt butter and combine with other toppings (leave cheese out if using)
divide dough into 2 loaves. cover with butter mixture (sprinkle on cheese if desired) and cut X into centers of the loaves.
Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

How I make sigils
sigil magic is pretty popular, and there are many ways to do it. this is how i design and use mine!

step 1) numbers
first step is choosing the number of sides the drawing will have, and therefore the centerpiece. today im making an elemental symbol to charge spells. in my tradition we have three elements, so my sigil should be three sided.

any three sided shape would work for me, but i felt drawn to something like this.
step 2) symbology
next i want to start adding easy symbols to represent the concept my sigil is based on. this means i need to represent land, sea, and sky.

here for sky i added some birds and suns. it's important that the shapes are simple to re-create later.
i keep drawing and try to make the shapes connect to each other in an aesthetically pleasing way.

for land i added some mountains, and to connect them i tried to blend the lines in as solar rays.
lastly i need to include the sea.

i put some large waves, also coming out of the suns.
step 3) sealing
now i just want to tie it all together. usually this means adding random squiggles to close off any "open ends" in the drawing. in this sigil there are two big gaps i want to close- right above the sun, and in between the ends of the waves.

my philosophy on this is that i want the energy to be flowing through the sigil continuously, not getting stuck in a gap.
step 4) preserving
finally i edit the photo to high contrast black and white, save it to a folder on my phone, and i can reference and draw the sigil whenever i need.

some other considerations while designing
- should the sigil be symmetrical or not?
- can you picture how energy moves through it?
- does the sigil have a simple enough design to be replicated in the future? should it be simplified?
let me know how this works for you!!!

Secular Celebrations - Autumnal Equinox

From there, we move into the fall and come to the Autumnal Equinox and my favorite time of year. September brings the second harvest - more fruit, lots of gourds, and the rest of those autumn vegetables. Of course, there are some plants that will continue on well into the winter, but this is when most of the produce comes off the vine, and we begin storing them up for the colder months. The year begins to slide more noticeably toward winter, the leaves start to turn, and when the equinox comes, the day and night are equal once again.
This is a time for restoring balance. If things are feeling off in your home or in your life, take steps to restore that equilibrium and re-establish your routines. Cleanse your home of any lingering “summer grump” and make sure you air the place out once the weather isn’t so blazingly hot. I mean, who doesn’t love a bit of fresh autumn air in the house, especially when it has that little tinge of burning leaves to it? Mm, chef kiss, perfection. I mean, in 2020, we’re all sick of that because of the wildfires, but STILL. Do that end-of-summer cleanout, get ready for back-to-school if you have little ones, and start changing out your wardrobe.
There’s still time for a bit of last-blast outdoor fun, if you’re so inclined. Provided that the weather cooperates, you might plan one more beach day or camping trip or afternoon at the lake. Visit a farmer’s market or a harvest festival and have some fun. Visit that pick-your-own-produce farm again and bring from some seasonal fruits and veggies. I love apple-picking at this time of year, and it’s probably the thing I miss most about living in Pennsylvania. (Also, Stayman Winesaps are the tastiest apples on earth, and nothing you can say will change my mind.)
Go on a walk or a drive to view the changing leaves. Oh, and mark the day you first see leaves starting to turn. That’s a fun thing I do every year, I call it Turning Day. If there are maple trees in your area, those will probably be the ones that change first, so look for those. You can use fall foliage, acorns, and gourds to start decorating your home - real or silk, whatever works best for you.
This is another big holiday for bonfires as well - honestly, bonfires are pretty much part of ALL the holidays, they’re just fun - so if you can attend one or have one safely, that’s something to consider. Or maybe just have one more picnic or cookout before the weather turns too chilly for it to be feasible. Have a fall feast for your near-and-dear with lots of lovely seasonal produce and pies, maybe a roast fowl or brisket or fish, whatever you like best.
Speaking of food, this is my baking season. It’s finally cool enough to have the oven going without suffocating myself in the heat or running up a four-figure energy bill trying to keep the indoor temperature manageable. So if you’re a fan of baking, why not give that a try? There are plenty of recipes to choose from, like soda bread, pumpkin bread, spice cake, maple cookies, and so on.
Keep that sense of community going by making a little bit extra and sharing it with friends and neighbors. Some people do their autumn feasting around the equinox instead of in November, when Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. There is a holiday in September called Harvest Home that directly corresponds to this, so if you’d rather skip Thanksgiving but you still want to feast, that’s something to look into.
Start stocking your shelves for the winter too. Put up pickles and preserves. Refresh your canned goods and non-perishables, maybe save a few bottles of whatever libations you made earlier in the year. If you have kids, celebrate the idea of this gathering-in with a scavenger hunt. Have them help you find signs of autumn or needful items for the pantry.
As the year turns and the harvest comes in, meditate upon your own personal harvest. This might be a journaling activity. You’ve sown, you’ve tended, you’ve reaped. Now what is your harvest? What have you learned from the year? What abundance has entered your life? What have you lost? What surprised you? What didn’t go quite as you planned? What are you thankful for? What do you regret?
Meditate also upon the balance in your life. Do things FEEL balanced? Or are they out of whack? If so, how can you address this? Do you feel you need to change things, or is it more prudent to let them reach equilibrium on their own? What outside factors are affecting that balance, and what can you reasonably affect on your own?

The Wall of Thorns - A Spell of Protection

Then round that place there grew a hedge of thorns thicker every year, until at last the whole castle was hidden from view, and nothing of it could be seen but the vane on the roof. […] From time to time many Kings’ sons came and tried to force their way through the hedge; but it was impossible for them to do so, for the thorns held fast together like strong hands, and the young men were caught by them, and not being able to get free, there died a lamentable death.
- The Sleeping Beauty
Intent: To protect one’s home and property.
Ideal Timing: Full Moon, but can be made anytime.
Materials:
Glass Jar with Lid
Black Taper Candle
Planter Pot & Soil
Super Glue
Pins & Thorns
Duct Tape
Herbs: Dill, Basil, Salt, Vinegar, Lemon or Pickle Juice
Load the bottle with the pins, herbs, and just enough of your chosen liquid to fill it about ¾ full. It should be noted that some witches prefer to use urine for their home protection bottles, both for traditional and territorial reasons. This is certainly a viable choice if you are comfortable with it, but if not, then the options listed above will be quite effective.
Seal the top and secure with a strip of duct tape or electrical tape to prevent leaks. Once it is sealed well, begin to attach the flat ends of the thorns to the outside of the bottle using the superglue so that the points face outward. Be very careful not to stick yourself while handling the bottle!
Once all the thorns are in place, light the black candle and drip the wax over the top of the bottle. As the wax falls, hold the image of a thorny protective barrier in your mind and continue to turn the bottle, letting the wax spill down the sides to help hold the thorns in place. Keep dripping the wax until the cap is completely covered and all the thorns have been secured.
Pour some dirt into the planter pot, place the bottle inside, and pour in more dirt until the bottle is covered. Keep the pot somewhere on your property. You can even grow flowers in it, if you like, but it is not recommended that you use it for anything edible.
If you move to a new home, be sure to take the pot with you, or dig up the bottle and take it along; to remove the ward, break the wax seal and empty the contents of the bottle somewhere safe.

I will update this list as I find new examples. Feel free to add your own!

Witches & Witch Trials in History
Hex Positive
Ep. 3 - Hex Positive June 1, 2020 Bree delves into what it means to be Hex Positive, as well as discussing and dismantling some of the confusion surrounding the use of hexes and curses. Just what IS the Threefold Law, anyway? The answer may surprise you.
Ep. 19 - The Trouble with Tarot August 1, 2021 Tarot and tarot-reading have been a part of the modern witchcraft movement since the 1960s. But where did these cards and their meanings come from? Are they secretly Ancient Egyptian mystical texts? Do they have their origins among the Romani people? Are they a sacred closed practice that should not be used by outsiders? Nope, nope, and nope. This month, we delve into the actual history of tarot cards, discover their origins on the gaming tables of Italy and France, meet the people who developed their imagery and symbolism into the deck we know today, and debunk some of the nonsense that’s been going around lately concerning their use. The Witchstorian is putting on her research specs for this one!
Ep. 20 - Witchcraft and the Law September 1, 2021 A discussion of the history of witchcraft-related laws and how changing views on magic, religion, and superstition first denied the existence of witches, then panicked over their alleged activities, and finally settled into something resembling common sense. This is a long slog, encompassing over 3000 years of history from a broomstick-height view, and I get off on a few tangents where history crosses paths with modern issues. But if you’re a history buff, you’re gonna love this episode!
Ep. 21 - Witchcraft and Modern Law September 21, 2021 A follow-up to Ep. 20, this time dealing with modern legal codes that may affect our practices even if they don’t deal with witchcraft directly. There is also some discussion of 20th-century events missed in the previous episode, as well as a brief overview of witch hunts still occurring in some parts of the world today.
Ep. 22 - Bree and Lozzie vs the Witch Hunters October 1, 2021 Bree NicGarran and guest host Lozzie Stardust run down the history and many misdeeds of notorious witch hunters Matthew Hopkins and John Stearne.
Ep. 23 - The Name of the Game November 1, 2021 Bree delves into the history, myths, and urban legends surrounding Ouija boards. Along the way, we’ll uncover their origins in the spiritualist movement, discover the pop culture phenomenon that labeled them portals to hell, and try to separate fact from internet fiction with regard to what these talking boards can actually do.
Ep. 28 - The Easter-Ostara Debacle April 1, 2022 Bree puts on her Witchstorian hat once more to delve into the origins of both Easter and Ostara and to finally answer the age-old question: which came first – the bunny or the egg?
BS-Free Witchcraft
Ep 03: The History of Wicca October 06, 2018 On this episode Trae digs deep into the history of Wicca, and tries to give the most accurate history of the religion as they can. I mean, yeah, we know this is a general Witchcraft podcast, but Wicca is the most widely practiced form of Witchcraft in the US, UK, Canada and Australia… so how it got started is kind of important for the modern Witchcraft movement. (And trust me, there aren’t any pulled punches here.)
Ep. 28: The Burning Times May 30, 2020 On this installment of the podcast, we tackle probably one of the more controversial topics in the modern witchcraft movement: The Burning Times. What were the actual “Burning Times,” where do we get that phrase from, and what really happened? Also, how has this phrase been used in modern witchcraft? It’s a heavy one, folks.
Ep. 33: The Wheel of the Year March 27, 2021 After two fairly depressing episodes, it’s time to move on to something a little less bleak. This time around we’re talking about the Wheel of the Year! Well, at least the basic idea. Where did it come from, who slapped these eight holidays together, and are they really something every witch needs to give a crap about? (Minor spoiler, the answer to that last question is a firm “no.”)
Ep. 39. - Mabon and Aidan Kelly Sept. 25, 2021 In the last few years there has been some minor push back against using the name “Mabon” for the Autumnal Equinox. In this episode we’re going to talk about how Mabon got its name, who came up with the name, and why exactly a small group of British Traditional Wiccans are so mad about it. (Spoiler: it’s because a bunch of Gardnerian Wiccans are mad at Aidan Kelly.)
Ep. 43 - “Lilith” Jan. 29, 2022 As long as I can remember, people have been debating whether or not it’s okay for non-Jewish witches to incorporate Lilith into their practices. Is Lilith closed? Is it cultural appropriation? There’s so much misinformation in new age and poorly written witchcraft books on Lilith, it’s hard for some witches to get a clear picture. Like I’ve run into folks on social media talking about Lilith as a “Goddess,” which she very much isn’t. Let’s dive into the origins of the folklore surrounding this figure, and I’ll let you decide whether or not it’s okay to work with Lilith. But, uh, spoiler – I don’t think you should.
Ep. 53 - Modern Witchcraft History Nov. 26, 2022 This episode of BS-Free Witchcraft is actually a panel from CritWitchCon 2022 this last October. Spend an hour with Alex Wrekk, Bree NicGarran, Lozzie Stardust, and Trae Dorn as they talk about the history of modern witchcraft. Also you get to list to Trae speed run like 130 years of history in under five minutes. [It was epic.]
Ep. 54 - A Conversation with Aidan Kelly Dec. 31, 2022 Trae sits down with Aidan Kelly (yes THE Aidan Kelly) to discuss the September 2021 episode listed above and set the record straight about Kelly’s new Wheel of the Year.
Irish History Podcast - The Kilkenny Witch Trial of 1342, pts 1-3 Dec 20, 2018 - Jan 28, 2019 One of the most famous or perhaps notorious incidents in Kilkenny’s medieval history took place in 1324 when the Bishop of Ossory accused Alice Kyteler, a powerful merchant in the city, of heresy and witchcraft. This sparked a lethal struggle in the town that would end in shocking brutality. The consequences for those caught in the middle would be devastating.
Historical Blindness, E105 - Omens, Charms, and Rituals: A History of Superstition Nov. 8, 2022 If you’ve ever wondered about common beliefs about what’s good or bad luck and what might be a portent of doom, then this episode is for you. In it, host Nathan Lloyd looks into the murky origins of superstitions and the folklore it’s related to, like jack o’lanterns, will o’ the wisp, and the fearsome Black Shuck.
Frightful, Eps. 28-29 - Hugh and Mary Parsons, The Springfield Witches Nov, 6-20, 2022 The year is 1651, and strange things are starting to occur. Livestock are dying, crops are struggling, and food is starting to spoil. Locals are even having strange seizures, and at night, as they try to sleep, they are haunted by terrifying nightmares. Then, the children of the village start to die. Are they just going through a terrible season…or might this be the season of the witch?
Cabinet of Curiosities, E460 - Hocus Pocus Nov. 17, 2022 Legendary battles and tales of revenge are the focus of this episode, including a brief rundown of the rather legendary feud between W.B. Yeats and the infamous Aleister Crowley.

10 Practices for Low-Energy Witches
Daily affirmations: Start your day by setting an intention or saying a positive affirmation that aligns with your goals and values. This can help you stay focused and grounded throughout the day.
Gratitude journaling: Take a few minutes each day to write down three things you're grateful for. This can help cultivate a sense of appreciation and abundance in your life.
Mindful breathing: Take a few deep, mindful breaths throughout the day to center yourself and release any tension or stress.
Moon-watching: Take a few moments to observe the moon each night, noting its phase and any changes in its appearance. You can also keep a moon journal to track your observations and feelings.
Elemental meditation: Spend a few minutes each day meditating on the elements (earth, air, fire, water) and their associated qualities. You can visualize yourself surrounded by each element and focus on how they make you feel.
Herbal tea rituals: Incorporate herbal teas into your daily routine and take a few moments to mindfully prepare and enjoy them. You can also research the magical properties of different herbs and choose teas based on their correspondences.
Candle magic: Light a candle and set an intention for the day or visualize your goals and desires coming to fruition. You can also choose candles based on their color correspondences for added potency.
Sigil drawing: Create a simple sigil to represent your intention or desire, and draw it on your skin, clothing, or a piece of paper. You can also charge your sigil with energy by visualizing it glowing with light or energy.
Crystal charging: Choose a crystal that aligns with your intention or desired outcome and hold it in your hand or place it on your body. Visualize the crystal absorbing your energy and amplifying your intentions.
Nature appreciation: Take a few moments each day to appreciate the natural world around you, whether it's the beauty of a flower or the majesty of a tree. You can also connect with nature by taking a walk, gardening, or spending time in a park or forest.
Remember, these are just a few examples of simple, low-energy witchcraft practices you can incorporate into your daily routine. The most important thing is to find practices that resonate with you and align with your personal values and beliefs.
It's important to remember that everyone's energy levels and circumstances are different, and there may be times when you simply don't have the energy or motivation to practice witchcraft. This doesn't make you any less of a witch, or any less magickal. It's okay to take a break and focus on self-care and nurturing yourself. Remember, your magick is always within you, and you can connect with it in your own way, on your own time. Be kind and gentle with yourself, and trust that the universe will support you wherever you are on your journey.

"Do No Harm, Take No Shit"
☽⦁────── ⦁⧊⦁ ──────⦁☾
This is my take on the quote above - what it means to me personally. This is my opinion and you do not have to agree.
Everyone has a different interpretation of any kind of quote. Some might consider this as one must never harm anyone, even if they disrespect you, simply walk away.
This is not my take. To me I harm no one, unless they deserve it. Hence the "take no shit" part.
However, I don't waste my time and energy on petty things. I will do return to sender spells, freezing spells and banishing spells if people are going out of their way to try to harm me (spreading gossip for example).
But when it comes to more serious things that have long term detrimental side effects (abuse for example), you bet I'm going to hex them.
That's just my simple and short take on what the quote means to me. I generally seek peace, but sometimes peace is found in revenge and not everything is black and white.

Witchcraft & Elemental Magic

Why Incorporate the Elements?
Some people believe that the four elements are spirits, other think they just energetic currents in which we can tap into (beliefs may vary, to each their own). Most can agree that the four elements are powerful forces which can be incorporated into spells and ritual work to strengthen or empower our intent. The four elements can also be called upon for any number of thing including protection working, to bless or charge objects, circle casting and grounding exercises. Practitioners may choose to incorporate the elements in many different way and using many different forms especially if they feel particularly connected to that element.
For example, my big three are all Earth signs (yes, I am absolutely insufferable) so I feel particularly connected to the element of Earth. In contrast, a storm witch will likely choose to honour the element of Water and work with that element closely. You can also have no particular connection to any of the elements and simply choose to honour them all (or none) and that works to. Elemental magic may interest to you especially if you choose not to work with deities because working with these energies can be more informal (I would argue that deity work is more structured in comparison but that is a personal opinion).
You can incorporate the elements in many ways as well so don’t feel limited by what you see on social media. The sun and lightening can be used to represent Fire instead of a simple candle. The moon can represent Earth, since it was once a part of the earth. Water can be the water you drink but it can also be ice or steam. Air can be wind, smoke or simply breathing. Elemental magic is very versatile and can be incorporated into a lot of your mundane work as well. Washing the laundry can become cleansing with Water and an oven can be used in a working with the element of Fire.
Ways to Honour the Elements:
Making offerings to the elements- offerings for the Earth can be buried, while offerings for Fire can burned. Just remember that some offerings may be toxic so be sure to do your research before offering something (especially with Water since many water sources are threatened).
Build an altar for the elements- you don't need an entirely separate altar, it works equally as well if you just incorporate something to represent each element on your working altar. Many people use dirt for Earth, water for Water, incense for Air and a candle for Fire (but feel free to switch it up).
Take care of the planet- doing things like recycling, eating less meat and picking up trash can all be devotional acts to help keep our planet in good health. Remember that devotional acts should be tailored to your abilities, do not do anything that may jeopardize your health.
Colour magic- different colour are associated with different elements and you can honour the elements by wear certain colours. For example, to honour the Earth, you may choose to wear green.
Traditional Practices & the Elements:
🖤Some of the traditions discussed below are closed practices. Please do your research!
Many different traditions focus on or incorporate the elements. Traditions which involve shamanism often incorporate the elements into their practices. Indigenous communities place a great focus on the elements as well and many of their practices involve honouring elements like Earth and Water. Other religions, like Wicca, also place a great deal of emphasis on the four elements (or 5 elements in the case of Wicca). Additionally, depending on the region, some folk practices may incorporate certain elements as well. For example, folk practices which originated near the sea may honour/incorporate the element of Water.
The elements themselves are open to anyone and can be worked with or honoured by anyone. Depending on the tradition or religion you are apart of, you may have a deeper connection to some elements over others.

Warding using Energy Work
Recently, I’ve come to the conclusion that not only have I been using energy work for a while, but I’m actually not that terrible at it! To test this theory, I decided to create a ward, after doing some research and practicing some energy work techniques.
But first, I should talk a bit about what warding is, for those who are unfamiliar or need a refresher.
What is a Ward?
A ward, to put it simply, is a hardcore protection spell. It is meant to protect 2 things simultaneously: you(or other living things in your space), and a space(ie your room, your home, your workspace, etc). Wards are more permanent forms of protection, and they are meant to be a bit more stationary(though parts of it can move with you, which will be discussed later on). They are different from protection circles, which are meant to protect you for a short period of time, and are different from shields, which protect mainly you and are meant to be more fluid.
Why should I ward?
Well, why not? Many witches that ward do it to protect themselves from those that wish them harm. They are very good at keeping bad energy out(especially if you are being cursed/psychically attacked), and are also good at deflecting those energies. They’re also good at creating “safe spaces”, if you will. Basically, in terms of energy, what you want in there stays in, and what you want out of there stays out.
Great! How do I do it(specifically with Energy Work)?
Well, there’s a lot of steps, and a lot of things to keep in mind, so I will try to condense it the best I can.
1. Cleanse. Hard.
This seems like a no-brainer, and it is. However, the usual cleansing ritual you do may not work as well as you’d like for it to in this case. I’d advise you do a bit more of an intense cleanse to ensure that nothing you want stuck in your ward gets stuck in there.
2. Decide your energy sources
For wards, it is unwise to create one using your energy alone. Technically, you could, but a) your wards may not not be as strong as you’d like, and b) you could overuse your energy and burnout. To avoid this, it is best you use an energy source to help you out. For the best results, use only one or two energy sources, but if you feel comfortable enough you can use more.
Examples of some energy sources:
Deities/spirits you work with
Crystals
The sun and/or the moon
Sigils
The elements(earth, water, air, fire)
Another witch in your household
3. Set up some boundaries
In my opinion, this is the most important part. Creating rules for your ward will ensure it works in the way you want it to. For this, write down the boundaries for your ward, being as specific and a detailed as possible.
For the sake of security, I will not share the boundaries for my ward. However, here are some prompts, should you be stuck on what to write:
Where is the location of your ward?
Does the ward protect you, and only you? Does it protect other people/living things within the house?
What does the ward protect against? How does it protect?
What does the ward do if an unwanted energy/entity forces its way in? What happens to the ward if this happens?
[If working with deities/spirits/other witches], what can they do to the ward? Can they manipulate the rules? Are they allowed into the ward?
Does someone need specific permission to enter the ward? If so, who needs the permission? How is this given?
Is the ward strictly solitary? Can part of it move along with you?
How long does the ward last? How can the ward be destroyed/deactivated?
4. Channel your energy
Now that you’ve got your energy sources and your boundaries set, it’s time to start setting up the ward! But first, you need to channel the energy from your energy source, basically asking them permission for you to use their energy in this spell. For those who are unsure if they’ve received consent, you will most likely feel a different energy/vibration as an indicator.
5. Manipulate your energy
Next, set everything up the way you want/need to, then sit(preferably) in the middle of your space/building. Begin to gather the energy from yourself and your energy sources, in however way works best for you. Keep growing and building this energy mass until you’ve got a lot of it.
Once you’ve got your mass of energy, begin to push it out away from you, again, in any way you see fit. You can grab parts of the energy and “paint” it onto different corners or walls. You can keep expanding it until it fills your space. You can literally push the energy into the corners of the space. However you choose to manipulate the energy to fill your space is completely up to you.
This is optional, but you can also install energy into the list of boundaries you wrote down, just so you are certain the rules will bestow themselves into the ward.
6. Assess
Before you call it good, make sure everything feels right. The air around you should feel dense and thick, but not suffocating. The best way to describe it is like being wrapped tightly in a soft, warm blanket. If you don’t feel that(or only a little bit), your ward may be too thin, and you’ll need to create more energy. If it feels too much, your ward may be too thick, and you’ll need to take some of the energy back. If you feel any holes in the ward(maybe you forgot the ceiling, or a certain corner), fill them in now.
Once you feel ready, feel free to close everything down. Thank those that helped you, go get water or a snack, and recharge your batteries. You’ve earned it!
I hope this is helpful for some of you. Until then, happy witchcrafting!

I have seen such conflicting opinions on working with/worshipping Lilith so I'm here to ask everyone to comment your opinion and give me a proper source to back up what you're saying.
Varied opinions include :
Mesopotamian Origin VS Jewish Origins
Lilith being Open VS Closed
Some Jewish people saying she is open VS some Jewish people saying she is closed
Demon VS Goddess
PLEASE can someone give me proper sources and evidence to prove something because it's absolutely maddening trying to figure this out 🤣
P.S. I'm asking so I DON'T appropriate, so please keep that in mind. Also, no arguing in the comments. Just add your opinion please
