I was born and raised in America by two lovely native Malayalis who risked everything to come here. Although I went to India for about a year when I was five, I have much to learn about the India that lies outside of Kerala. I'm embarking on a cultural voyage to better understand Mother India and the tastes her children have. Wish me luck!

So I tried panipuri for the first time a few weeks ago, and I still don't get the hype. It was kind of bland, honestly. Chaat wasn't even that spicy. I'm just going to go eat actual puri with my mom's potato curry and leave the panipuri to the North Indians.

This movie made me lol so hard. There were quite a few good laughs in this movie. Not award-winning material, but definitely worth a watch if you're into rom-coms with ditzy leads.

Dileep and Ashokan are my favorite comedy duo. I don't think there is a better pair out there, sincerely.

I was hoping someone would make a GIF of this, and it happened. Every time I even think about the SRK nicotine joke I start laughing uncontrollably. Even now, I'm laughing. CANNOT HANDLE.

BOSS
So, quick disclaimer: I'm a huge sucker for action movies. Like, slow-motion karate gets me drooling faster than Akshay Kumar's lovely face, both of which were present in this movie.
However, I cannot shut my critic's eye, even when I really, really want to. This movie was flimsy, filmy fun with very little substance but quite a few good laughs.
Akshay Kumar is "Boss," a good-hearted gunda named Surya who is disowned by his father ("Satyakant Shastri," Mithun Chakraborty) due to his violent outbursts and ends up being taken in by a gangster ("Big Boss," Danny Denzongpa). After years of being ignored and suffering in stylish silence, Boss is approached by his annoying father to save his brother, Shiv (Shiv Pandit), who is wrongfully accused of crimes by a corrupt police officer (Ronit Roy).
There are only two good reasons to watch this movie, and their names are Akshay Kumar and Ronit Roy. Akshay really shines as Boss (not really a surprise, is it?) - he delivers the most ridiculous and hilarious lines with characteristic panache, but handles the more sensitive parts of the movie with sincerity. He really is the "Boss." Ronit Roy is thoroughly convincing as a baddie, nefariously ambitious and unflinchingly evil. Watching the two square off is intense. Also, we get a glance of Prabhu Deva (which I consider a plus in any movie, but I want more dancing, PD!) in "Hum Na Tode," easily my favorite song in the whole thing.
My weakness for awesome action scenes makes me love every single stunt Akshay pulls in this, but I recognize that for some, the movie will drag at those points. My favorite scenes were probably the chase in the market where Boss runs on the head of his enemies, and the scene where Boss threatens the PM's son with a bomb in his "bum chiki chiki bum."
The climax was a tad contrived, as it's very difficult for me to swallow the idea that a guy as grimly calculating as Ronit Roy's ACP Ayushman Thakur would fight a fair fight. More likely would be him showing up with back-up, or at least a gun. A knife? Brass knuckles? Something, man. The only "weapon" was a freaking chair, which is certainly not enough to beat the Boss.
As is typical for masala action, the female characters are forgettable and weak. The father story was obnoxious, as I ended up just flat-out despising the father for his self-righteous attitude. No one should be so gung-ho about abandoning their child. I felt no sympathy for him whatsoever.
The brother angle, however (Surya and Shiv), was a nice addition. I have thing for sibling love. It's the cutest. I would have loved it, no matter how it was presented, and it's presented quite well. It would have been nice to see some more of it, but action is action, I suppose.
Overall, there are some amazing action sequences and laugh-out-loud lines, but they can't compensate for a thin story. Akshay Kumar is the star of the show as he inhabits the larger-than-life Boss, but the show isn't particularly worthy of him. It's a fun film, but it's forgettable.

I usually hate "luv storys" too, but this one was kinda cute. Or maybe it was just Imran Khan.

He's had his share of ups and downs, but his movies always put a smile on my face. He deserves way more credit for all he does.
