Jewish tarot part 5: Wheel of Fortune
The thing I love about dreidels is how it’s a kids game, but they also have deeper meaning. They represent resistance, knowledge, luck, and miracles. The letters have their own meaning, both together and separately. There’s a lot more to it than just child’s play if you really look into them.
נס גדול היה שם
A great miracle happened there

Purim - Shimshon
I’ve chosen orange and blue to describe my relationship with Jewish culture. Orange generally conveys a more positive outlook, and blue is the backdrop and sometimes conveys negative feelings (usually my relationship with depression and Jewish practice). This series will be called Shimshon.
My brother’s Yahrzeit was on Purim, and it was already a rather fraught one given current events. This sketch is about looking for the unbridled joy that exemplifies Purim, wearing a mask, not knowing how to connect with people, not wanting to bring the party down, and struggling to enjoy Purim. It’s just not in me to feign happiness, but I can incorporate my grief into the chag with the artistic expression that Purim is known for

My brothers yahrzeit is on Purim, and something I realized recently is that a lot of people are going to be like me this year. They’re going to have a hard time with it. Please be kind to people struggling with Purim this year

actually, i did want to ask you all - a commonly shared sentiment about character creators in games or dressup games online is there's very frequently a lack of black hairstyles.
so it made me curious - what are some black hairstyles you wish would be included more in character creators/dressup games? or ones you get really happy to see are included?

Shimshon
This piece is an attempt to redefine what strength is. Instead of viewing it as weakness to be bedridden until sunset, I am portraying the choice to get up when I am ready as a strength. My life doesn’t follow the accepted narratives of success, and I can see that as a weakness, or I can see it as freedom to choose my own goals and success.

Eros is what I call this series of red and blue ink drawings which critiques American culture.
Reaching out is about wanting to talk about self harm, and being afraid to. Red, in this case, indicates the urgency of the situation. Connecting to people you can rely on can really help you recover, even if it’s just anonymous.

EROS is normally a series of red and blue ink drawings, but the color for self harm awareness month is orange, so I went with orange and blue.
Bloom is partly about getting help, recovery, and trying new things besides self harm, and partly about experiences in mental health institutions. It’s often a traumatizing experience, though other patients can sometimes help, as they did with me. The themes of this piece are supposed to be a play on having blood drawn, on finding your lifeline, contrasting the upsetting clinical environment with communal growth. The idea that it’s meant to be a supportive place, and yet many people find it hostile, especially towards poc.

People used to comment on web comics.
People used to comment on fanfiction.
People used to comment on fanart.
People used to comment on OCs.
I hate "content" culture.
I hate "consuming content" and scrolling immediately to the next thing.
People used to be excited about the art that other people created.
People used to want to share that excitement with creators.
I hate this future.

It’s self injury awareness month, so my art will largely focus on self harm and recovery for the time. Will tag all art for triggers. Block tw sh and sh recovery to avoid triggers in the future.

This one is about Nex Benedict standing up for themself being bullied, and how it’s being weaponized to claim that being beaten is equivalent to having water splashed on you. Since when does getting splashed deserve the death penalty?
If people wanna claim it’s assault, consider that slamming someone’s head into the floor repeatedly is excessive defense.

Eros is normally a series of red and blue ink drawings, but I thought that red and black would be more appropriate here.
This piece is my emotional response to hearing about Nex Benedict, an indigenous nonbinary kid who was beaten to death and misgendered afterwards, who is sadly not the only one, but rather part of an ongoing struggle. Something about their story in particular hit me a certain way. It triggered so many things— childhood trauma, bullying, fear of gendered spaces, fear of being a statistic, fear of being misgendered after death. These things are a reality for so many trans people like them. It makes me want to shout who I really am to the world so it can’t be erased. I am Jewish and I am queer and I want to be remembered as myself.

Be Mine is about how much pressure Valentine’s Day can put on people, both single and in relationships. It can be about rejection, apprehension, or break ups. Regardless, whoever abandoned their valentine gift on the ground was not having a good day.
