🇺🇸recall of ALL zicam cold remedy nasal swabs, zicam nasal allclear swabs, and orajel baby teething swabs due to potentially life-threatening microbial contamination🇺🇸
all lots within expiration. it seems this contamination has been going on for a long time. and yes one of these is aimed at babies. awful.
two of these are swabs that go up your nose, and one is intended to relieve pain for teething babies.
Church & Dwight Co., Inc. is voluntarily recalling all lots within expiry of Zicam® Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, Zicam® Nasal AllClear Swabs, and Orajel™ Baby Teething Swabs to the consumer level. The products are being recalled due to potential microbial contamination identified as fungi in cotton swab components. Swabs found to contain microbial contamination can potentially present a significant risk to the health and safety of consumers including serious and life-threatening blood infections in users whose nasal mucosa may be compromised due to inflammation and mechanical injuries. The risk is highest (potentially severe or life-threatening) among children and individuals with compromised immune systems or other underlying medical conditions. To date, no serious adverse events associated with the affected product have been reported. The recalled products were distributed nationwide in the United States and in Puerto Rico.
so, for fuck knows how long, the swabs have been contaminated with dangerous fungi. this recall announcement does not specifically name the type of fungi that contaminated the swabs, but they do say that it is bad enough to potentially be life-threatening. yikes!
now here is the complicated part. these are products advertised to sick people and babies, which are two groups at risk of randomly getting sicker. although there have been no reported serious adverse effects, note that they never said no adverse effects. if someone developed a life-threatening infection from these, it would probably be pretty fucking hard to link that illness or even death to a nasal swab. there is no telling if the samples taken of the contaminants will wind up being linked to someone's illness from months or years ago.
the nose and mouth are dangerous places to get infections, as the infections can travel to other parts of the body like the brain or heart and become deadly. this is part of why going to a dentist is so important, because infections in the mouth can kill someone who is otherwise healthy.
there have been many US news stories over the years of people who got contaminated water up their nose and wound up hospitalized or dead from infection, too. which is why you should never use tap water in a neti pot.
Recalled Product Information Zicam® Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, with UPC 732216301205, all lots: A zinc-free, homeopathic cold remedy swab designed to shorten the duration of the common cold. Zicam® Nasal AllClear Swabs, with UPC 732216301656, all lots: A nasal cleansing swab product (discontinued in December 2024). Orajel™ Baby Teething Swabs, with UPC 310310400002, all lots: Pre-moistened swabs designed to soothe teething discomfort in infants and toddlers.
ALL LOTS within expiration are being recalled. and the implication here is, this contamination may go back YEARS. they just do not have to take full responsibility for the contaminated products that have already expired.
Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products should stop using the product immediately. Please visit www.churchdwightrecall.com or call its Consumer Relations team at (800) 981-4710 for a full refund. Any additional questions can also be directed to its Consumer Relations team Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm ET. Adverse reactions or quality problems experienced with the use of this product may be reported to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program either online, by regular mail or by fax.
stop using these products immediately and reach out to the company for a full refund. and if you have experienced any adverse reactions from these products, please report it to the FDA.
