Spirit Work Foundations- Communication
This is the first post in a series we will be doing on Spirit Work Foundations and 101 material.
Tumblr media
These posts are set up to help explain the first aspects a new Spirit Worker should be focusing on as they go through their journey. Hopefully, these posts can be a good bounce-off place for those who are new to this path and can help build the foundations for your practice.
Now, to start…
Communicating with Spirits
Communicating with Spirits can be one of the most difficult skills to learn when first starting on this path. But to reiterate… it is a SKILL, and like all skills, it will take practice to get to a place where your communication will be reliable.
Some people will start with a natural talent, but it’s important to note that even those who have a natural talent will need to work when it comes to hearing Spirits.
It can be frustrating to start out and not be able to pick up any messages from the Spirits around you. It can lead to doubt and anxiety and even discourage someone from continuing this journey. Please understand this is a journey. You won’t start able to hear every message that comes through. You may not even hear 25% of the messages that come through. It’s important to keep pushing and keep trying to practice and broaden your skillset and add new tools to your repertoire. The more you study and research and find what works for YOU the more success you will have.
What will make you most successful with Spirit communication is finding what works for you and your natural abilities. No one person senses the same way and it takes trial and error to find the best method for your natural skill set.
When diving into Spirit communication it’s important to learn and recognize the Clair abilities and try and experiment with where your strengths and weaknesses are when it comes to them.
Some common Clair abilities are:
Clairaudience- The ability to hear Spirits audibly, with sound, or words internally. People who are good at this will usually connect through sound in other aspects of their life. Music and spoken word may be important to someone with a connection to this ability. It is important to understand that clairaudience isn’t always hearing with your physical ears. As with all Clair abilities, it can be astral sound as well, which will manifest as hearing within, it will sound like your own internal thoughts, though as you get better it will be easier to hear tone, accent, and energy resonance that will help differentiate from your internal monologue.
Clairvoyance- The ability to see Spirits/Energy/Astral physically, or with your mind's eye. People who connect with this aspect of sense will usually be visual learners. They may be artists and will think in pictures instead of words. Colors and being able to picture in your mind's eye will be easier for people with this ability. As with Clairaudience, Clairvoyance can be more internal than external. With Spirits, this will manifest as seeing images in your mind's eye, which is internally, even if energetically. In the Astral, people who develop this ability will be able to see clearer and more reliably.
Clairsentience- The ability to have clear “feeling”. This ability is defined as being able to sense the energy, emotions, or patterns around you. This ability manifests as being drawn to energy work and being able to pick up on the energy around you just by feel or emotions. People who are good at Clairsentience will be able to pick up on Spirit emotions or energy easier and will have an easier time on the astral by the ability to feel the air and room around them without touch. This sense ties heavily into Claircognizance, but unlike Claircognizance, which is defined by just knowing without any recognizable identification, Clairsentience is feeling what is already there around you.
Claircognizance- This is a unique ability as those with claircognizance will have a clear “knowing”. This ability manifests as gut feelings or being able to read energy and “know” more than initially picked up. People with this ability will be the kind of people that know when their friends are in trouble or get gut feelings about people to stay away from. As humans, we classify this as gut feelings, instinct, or pattern recognition. All of these tie into this ability as it’s not a recognizable way of knowing you just *know*. In the astral, this can manifest as being able to know more about a Spirit than they tell you. Or your gut instinct is highly developed.
Others of note- Clairtangency (sense of touch), Clairalience (sense of smell), Clairaugstance (sense of taste).
The reason for going in-depth into the multiple Clair senses is your strengths with these key components will help you to identify how you hear best, and what parts of your hearing to focus on while you develop the other senses. If you are naturally good at Clairvoyance you might see more in your mind's eye while a spirit is trying to communicate instead of hearing actual words being spoken. The more you know about your specific skill set the more you will be successful with the trial and error that comes with Spirit communication.
The key to Spirit communication is understanding that Spirits communicate in more ways than just speaking words into our minds and hoping we hear them. Each Spirit's communication method will also be unique to that Spirit and while one of your companions may speak best with words, another may speak best with feelings.
Some methods Spirits will use to communicate are:
Words and Phrases
Images
Sensations such as temperature changes or the feeling of someone sitting next to you.
Sounds heard audibly
A change in your environment such as shufflemancy, or a certain sign appearing repeatedly
Emotions
Drawing your eye to certain elements to try and communicate
Using divination tools to pass along messages
Information Dumping so all of the communication is just dumped into your brain for you to process through
Channeling, where they will have you write, or type, and as you do the words will flow through you.
Seeing a symbol of theirs or something that represents them
Energetically, or through energy shifts
Body Language (Usually in images or through astral sight)
Using the five base senses (Touch, Taste, Smell, etc)
By moving your body in certain ways (I.e. making your eyes move to show an eye roll or other body language tells)
This is just a small list of possible ways a Spirit can communicate.
A lot of people are so caught up on hearing actual words that they forget to focus on other avenues and recognizing that those other avenues are just as valid. Just because you can’t hear words doesn’t mean you won’t be able to in the future; with practice. Allow yourself to communicate in the method that matches you, while you work on the ways that may be more difficult for you.
Tools are also a very under appreciated method of communication. Using Tarot to sense and communicate can help you to dial in on other senses you aren’t used to using and help fine tune your hearing. Using Tarot and other divination tools can help to open you up to the energy around you and make you more receptive to messages that are coming through. When using divination tools you are opening yourself up to the energies around you and allowing that energy to flow through you and into your deck/tool which can aid in getting more information, or even just getting any information at all. Tarot is a wonderful tool for discernment as well but we will discuss that more in depth in another post.
Ambiance is another method that can help to process messages easier. If you have a hard time having casual conversations, try setting a small ritual (by ritual we mean anything that gets your mind into a certain headspace that will allow you to open up more).
If the incense burning and drum beats running in the background help you concentrate, and allow you to be more open, by all means set your scene and go.
Sometimes just making it a ritual of repetition can help to move your mind into an open space for communication. The act of shuffling cards, or lighting a candle with a small invocation, can really help set the mood and allow you to relax into the idea of hearing the Spirits around you.
Setting a repetitive set of movements,or actions, can help train your mind to get ready to be open. Setting candles and music can be meditative and allow your mind to loosen and relax.
It’s also important to not judge yourself based on the success of others. Only look at your own improvement and don’t try and compare your journey to the people around you. That is the quickest way to become discouraged and stunt your own growth.
Keep a communication journal and record your conversations, and anything you sense from your companions, and note down anytime you receive a message, or sensation, that you believe is communication. Over time you will be able to determine what is communication and what is mundane.
Another method to help you reach your Companions is to utilize meditation to allow your mind to open for communication. Meditating on your Spirits energy and allowing yourself to merge with their energy and just noting down anything you pick up on can help you find a basis to begin communication. Meditation is a wonderful tool to help with Spirit work even later in your journey.
It is important not to judge yourself or allow self doubt to win. Self doubt will block your senses more than anything. Also remember, your companion is your ally. They are trying to communicate just as much as you are trying to hear. The pressure is not on you alone; it takes two to communicate. Hopefully this can bring some comfort to know this is a group activity.
Dealing with self doubt in communication can tricky to navigate. Most of the time normal Shadow work won’t help you overcome the seeds of doubt planted in your mind. Shadow work on why you feel you cannot communicate, on why you feel you shouldn’t be able to, or why you feel you need to be perfect in one sitting can help to further your goals. But, self doubt in Spirit Work is a natural process that can be utilized to help facilitate your growth.
There is a healthy balance between doubting everything you are getting and being too confident in your abilities. It’s important to discern but also allow yourself to be open enough to hear. It takes time and practice to find a healthy median. A useful tool for dealing with doubt and anxiety in hearing is before bed, or anytime that is quiet and low pressure, sit with your companions and tell them about your day. As you speak just be open to any banter they may have and just let the messages come. This isn’t the time to doubt or discern, this is a low-pressure conversation about something that has no serious meaning. Low-pressure conversations like this, where it doesn’t matter if you heard it right or not, are a good way to practice hearing and working through your anxiety. Let the conversation flow and just respond to what you pick up. It doesn’t matter at this moment if it’s right, or perfect, all that matters is you are working on training yourself to calm your heart and just be open.
Another common factor in being able to hear Spirits correctly is if your energy pathways are open to messages. Doubt, fear, stagnant energy, and even past life blocks can all block your senses and make it difficult to get anything reliably. Seeing an astral healer who specializes in energy blocks or past life work can seriously help to open your pathways to outside communication. Energy body hygiene is key in being receptive because you can’t throw a rock down a blocked pipe. It will catch and never reach its target. If you are curious about astral blocks and if you have any we suggest looking for either a energy worker or healer. Or asking your companion to find a Spirit healer who can help.
Hopefully, this covers enough to at least get you started on your journey to Spirit Communication. It’s important to keep trying and adding new tools to your repertoire and to treat each attempt as an experiment in the essence of finding how YOU hear. Keep an eye out for more Spirit Work Foundations posts to be shared at a later date.

ʚ♡⃛ɞ Tip for exercising your clairvoyance, mediumship, and sending “spirits”
ʚ♡⃛ɞ It’s good to start with thinking in a metaphorical/poetic way.
ʚ♡⃛ɞ Ask yourself, what kind of “ghosts” are remaining and residing in a specific space or area. You can also ask locals about the history of a space or area to help as well. It’s also similar to how real estate agents explain what kind of people stayed in a house before leaving

Spirit/Entity Red Flags
A page for my records. I’m not an authority, these are just my current beliefs.
Note: This list is about malevolent or imposter spirits. Many modern sources refer to all lying, malicious spirits as tricksters, but this is not necessarily true. In multiple traditions (such as Germanic and other folkloric/pagan traditions), tricksters were a particular kind of spirit that had the potential to be but were not inherently malicious; they had no fixed nature. Tricksters are liminal beings who tread crossroads and hold their own agenda; they can be malicious, benevolent, or both to travelers. This entry focuses on red flags for any kind of spirit. The otherworld is as full of different beings as our physical world is. Not all scary spirits hold malice towards you, and not all friendly spirits are benevolent.
This working list is adapted from tips from this post and my own personal experience.
Red Flags:
If this entity tries to manipulate or discourage you from reaching out to other spirits, particularly connected ones (ex: saying "family only weighs you down" when you want to connect with ancestors).
Upon meeting, the spirit acts like they know you and start telling you simple or vague information that you already knew about yourself.
If above, they are vague and often change their story when you ask for details about your connection, especially if it’s vaguely intimate (ex: "sister" or "you understand me," and "I knew I could never leave you," but nothing deeper and they match other red flags on this list).
If this entity is saying things to taunt, stress, or mock you: you don't need to put up with cruelty if you don't want to.
The entity gives you multiple names of spirits/deities that don't seem to fit them. Bonus points if those names are familiar to you or were already on your mind; bonus points if they mock you when you get it wrong.
If a supposed deity is saying odd things that otherwise a deity would not say or which directly contradicts their lore.
If a spirit is giving you questionable information or trying to isolate you from seeking helpful information or sources.
If a spirit touches you sexually or stalks/follows you in spirit travel or the mundane world (it happens).
You feel a massive drain of energy without your consent when you connect with them.
They feel as though they're wearing a mask; you sense something behind it that rubs you the wrong way or makes your gut uncomfortable.
You feel uneasy around wards and protective symbols that used to feel good and safe. In my experience this indicates an attachment of some sort.
They present as highly altered versions of a familiar spirit. (Many wayward human spirits can look deformed as they have trouble holding and remembering their physical shape: this is not a red flag. This is mostly useful when differentiating between familiar spirits and untruthful spirits presenting a false persona. Compare to other red flags on list).
If a supposed deity's energy feels hollow or weak. I feel deity and divine spirits as an all-encompassing presence from above and around, even when they're slightly present (it's a sense of area, if it makes sense) and non-deity spirits coming from "the middle" or a closer plane. It's hard to explain with words. Practice discernment and observe.
They tell you hateful things, anything that stirs up strong negative emotion. Not the same as tough love from a spirit: this is intentionally cruel communication without a lesson or good reason.
Uncanny valley effect and creepy, cackling laughter that sounds human, should be human . . . but you know it's not human. This has only happened once to me in a dream state (connected to a very powerful, very malicious spirit), so to me it is a huge red flag. It is not common.
The entity disrespects your boundaries and will not leave you alone when you ask.
The entity tries to restrict you from doing daily things that bring you happiness and wellbeing (ex: connecting with friends, reading a good book, meditating, praying, showering, cleansing, therapy, leaving the house).
They don't show kindness or put effort into the relationship but want you to fully rely on them.

Stag’s Rules for Responsible Mediumship:
I have a lot of opinions about what it takes to be a responsible medium. I’ve seen a lot of irresponsible mediumship, and it’s so common that I no longer feel comfortable offering my own mediumship. I now refuse to offer mediumship services, despite offering them years ago.
These are my personal rules for my own mediumship skills, and I’ll admit, the rubric by which I assess other mediums. I’ve set them up in a series of Do’s and Don’ts + some explanations/ reasonings for each.
1. Do: Ask permission before reading, channeling, for relaying messages for anyone.
Don’t: Read, channel, or relay messages for someone unsolicited.
This should be obvious. Give people a chance to accept or deny your services. We should all understand consent.
2. Do: Help people who express having a problem and ask for help or mediumship.
Don’t: Try to help someone who hasn’t asked for help.
Not everyone who says they are having trouble with something wants external help. They may want to figure it out themselves.
3. Do: Take responsibility for what you read, channel, or relay.
Don’t: Pass the buck for your reading, channeling, or messages to the entity.
It’s like being the person at the D&D table who makes wild choices and then justifies it as “That’s what my character would do.” No one like “That Guy” don’t be the occult version of “That Guy.”
4. Do: Encourage people to vet your readings, channeling,or messages with their own divination or outside sources.
Don’t: Expect, or worse insist, others to rely on you and you alone for their knowledge and gnosis.
As a medium you should want what you say to be backed up by other sources, either academic or community based. This proves that you’re not just making things up or presenting your UPG as fact.
5. Do: Encourage others to develop their own skills, and help/offer advice if asked.
Don’t: Just do a task for someone else who is struggling with a skill you have so that they don’t have to try.
This will prevent the people you read for from developing their own skills. As a medium should feel proud when someone says, “I don’t need your services anymore, I can do it myself.” There is a good chance your work was helpful in them getting to where they don’t need you anymore.
6. Do: Relay messages or channel for someone with as little personal filter/interpretation as possible.
Don’t: Insert yourself, your opinions, your UPG, or your personal paradigm into someone else’s spiritual relationship.
I know this one is hard, and it takes practice to master, but irresponsible mediums will use their mediumship to assert their own understandings and beliefs over others. Not everyone has the same understanding or relationships with incorporeal entities, and as a medium you need to remember that and let whoever you are performing mediumship for make their own informed decisions and interpretations. You wouldn’t set yourself up as an unsolicited intermediary between two physical friends, so don’t do it for a person and an incorporeal entity.
Appreciate my posts? Consider leaving a tip.
