Resources for Cuban and Caribbean Folk Magic 🇨🇺
Disclaimer: Cubans are not a monolith so when we say ‘Cuban Folk Magic’ its like saying ‘American Folk Magic’ in the sense that it is a BROAD term that includes multiple different cultural threads and traditions. Start by researching your ancestors and where they were from as a jumping off point.
Also, many of these resources are not Cuban themselves, but they either share the same practices or are academic or general sources. I have made it clear when a source isn’t Cuban. For this reason, I have expanded it to be the Cuban AND Caribbean Folk Magic List.
The List
General:
Irka Mateo - Taino - Insta 🇩🇴
Religion.Ancestral.Taino - Insta 🇵🇷
Sancista Brujo Luis - Espiritismo/Taino-Youtube | Blog 🇵🇷
OkaniLuna - Brujería/Taino - Youtube🇩🇴
Juliet Diaz - Brujería/Taino/Author - Instagram 🇨🇺
Sancista 7 Espadas - Espiritismo - Insta 🇵🇷
Odofemi - Regla de Ocha - Tumblr 🇺🇸
Eve the Medium - ATR/Espiritismo - Youtube 🇩🇴
Yeyeo Botanica - ATR/Espiritismo- youtube 🇺🇸
Botanica Candles & More - Great Podcast!! - youtube 🇨🇺 🇺🇸
Connecting w/ Guides and Goals by Adunola - youtube 🇺🇸
San Lazaro - Wikipedia - Novena - Yeyeo Botanica
Caridad del Cobre - Wikipedia
Orisha and Palo Herbs Directory- Website
Ewe (Herbs) Photo Guide - Website
Pueblo Originario Taino Section - Website
Books:
Taino Library* - Amazing resource for books of all kinds, many books about Taino, Cuban and Caribbean Spiritualities, Folklores and Songs! Multiple books on Cuban Myths and Folktales! Highly recommend - Website 🇵🇷
Espiritismo by Hector Silva🇩🇴
A Year in White by C Lynn Carr
The Modern Art of Brujería by Lou Florez(VERY BASIC just as a general introduction to what alot of modern Folk Practices look like)
American Brujeria by J. Allen Cross 🇲🇽🇺🇸
El Monte by Lydia Carbera 🇨🇺
Movies:
Cecilia (1982) - Youtube
Las Profecias de Amanda - Youtube
This list will grow as I find more resources that are reliable enough to share. If you have recommendations or would like to be added, please reach out.
Luz y Progreso 🕯️
(I also have included a Research Guide below the Cut!)
Guide to researching based on your ancestry:
If your family has African roots, you can seek Ocha/Lukumi, Palo, Arara, Cuban Vodou and other African Traditional Religions and Practices. Please approach elders within these respective practices to further your connection to them, rather than using books to create a practice for yourself. These are ancient, community based and are lifelong commitments, not just trendy powerful spells for you to get what you want.
If your family has indigenous roots, research Taino spirituality and modern practices , but also know that there were other tribes in the western and centeral parts of Cuba, with their own languages and traditions you can still learn about like the Guanahatabey. You may also consider joining a Yukayeke, but this isn’t required. Reconnecting and decolonizing is a separate and important topic that is not inherently witchcraft or folk magick-y… HOWEVER, researching and informing yourself with these practices can help you to see their influence within modern folk practices.
If your family has Asian roots, research the buddhist cults and folk practices throughout Cuba! Believe it or not, we also have people of Middle Eastern descent in Cuba who brought with them their own Hindu and Arabic Folk Traditions, which can be found throughout Cuba and the Caribbean as a whole.
If your family has Spanish roots, research some open practices like Espiritismo and Folk Catholicism! Look into the Patron Saints of Cuba, La Virgen de La Caridad del Cobre and San Lazaro. These also tie in to many of the other cultures who were forced to adopt certain elements to ensure survival of their traditions! You can also look into Brujería. Much like modern witchcraft, modern brujería has been commodified to hell and back, but there is still some great knowledge and power to be found there.
The fact of the matter is, that most of us can fit ourselves into two or more of these categories, and this crossover is where Folk Magic is often born. Its also important to note, in alot of these traditions you shouldn’t learn or share certain things at certain times, so some sources who share too much about Ocha and other ATRs should be avoided. Also, I can’t stress how important it is to talk to your family! Ask them about folklore or legends and stories! Also research history and folkore of the specific areas in Cuba your family is from. A-lot of folk magic is incorporated into stories.
Bendiciones, good luck on your Journey!🦎🐊

One thing I came to understand about trance by reading the works of psychologists like Milton Erickson is that trance states are hypnotic states. It’s the same brain state. And we pass in and out of those states all the time. Naturally.
The thing that most people miss is that there aren’t just post-hypnotic suggestions, there are pre-hypnotic suggestions as well. If you tell a room full of people who have never been hypnotized before that “most people tense up their right hand when they are hypnotized,” then that is what will happen.
So if you make super-duper sure that every medium takes your trance class where you tell them how bad your gods are, and how they do this and thus during trance, and how you therefore need all of these special rituals and techniques to stay safe, it’s a pre-hypnotic suggestion which then manifests when they next enter a hypnotic state.
Worse, if you teach people to fear their own natural trance states (which we enter and exit naturally — like during ‘highway hypnosis’ or whenever we space out) then when a person dissociates for too long, they might imagine they’re being possessed, and then you have a person in crisis, and there are so many of them at this point that — hell, may as well charge money for a ritual cure, or books about how to deal with this now-common problem, or classes about trance safety and warding, which only serves to reinforce the fear, which in turn generates more problems.
And of course, some people perpetuate this unknowingly. It's their reality, now, and leaving it would require the assistance of more than just a priest.
But mark my words, somewhere back up along the line there was a bastard who did it on purpose as a cheap power grab. They're the people who will say 'our gods need to be controlled' out of one side of their face and 'if we decide trance makes us healthier, it will' out of the other. They get it, and they are perpetuating a narrative of toxicity anyway.
And this is why we can't have nice things.

“I miss you but I won’t come back soon.”
Your path is clearing as we speak. Don’t give up on that opportunity just because it’s full of obstacles.

Mediumship in Children
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
As young minds navigating a world still infused with magic and wonder, children often find themselves immersed in experiences that adults may hastily categorize as flights of fancy. Imaginary friends become companions with whom we share secrets, and late-night conversations with unseen entities may be shrugged off as mere dreams. Sleepwalking and talking in our sleep become quirks, and visions or perceptions beyond the ordinary are brushed aside.
However, the truth lies in the purity of a child's perception. Children, closer to the divine source, possess an unfiltered lens through which they see the world. Their innate connection to spirituality allows them glimpses into dimensions beyond the tangible. Sadly, societal norms and the limitations of adult understanding often lead to the dismissal of these experiences as products of an overactive imagination.
In reality, these childhood encounters may be early manifestations of mediumship—the ability to bridge the gap between the seen and the unseen. Mediumship in children is not a flight of fancy; it is a profound connection to spiritual realms that adults may have long forgotten.
If your childhood was marked by unexplainable events and encounters, it's possible that you were attuned to energies and dimensions beyond the grasp of conventional understanding. The stories you may have dismissed as fanciful tales could be glimpses into a world that transcends the visible.
This article is an acknowledgment and a call to those who, as children, experienced the extraordinary. It's an invitation to reconsider those dismissed memories and recognize them as early expressions of a divine gift—mediumship. For within the innocence of childhood lies a reservoir of spiritual connection waiting to be reawakened.
Tumblr media
As a child growing up on Agatha Drive in Alabama, my world was adorned with the peculiar presence of two companions—Pecan and Chanoklia. These were not your average imaginary friends; they were as real to me as the Alabama sun that kissed our backyard. It's intriguing how the memories flood back now, considering that once we relocated, their playful presence vanished from my life.
Pecan and Chanoklia were more than figments of my imagination; they were brother and sister, light brown-skinned, with flowing hair—kindred spirits to my six-year-old self. Together, we embarked on adventures, crafting mud pies and swinging beneath the towering trees. Evenings were filled with whispered conversations, and they would turn on the TV for me, a tangible act that defied the conventional understanding of imaginary friends.
My mother, however, would insist that Pecan and Chanoklia were mere products of my imagination, not dwelling in the tangible realm. Despite her assurances, one night etched itself into my memory—the night Pecan reached across the veil of reality to turn on the TV. It was a moment that defied explanation, a confirmation that the boundaries between the seen and the unseen were more porous than I could comprehend.
Another vivid recollection takes me to a playful game of peek-a-boo with my dad. Underneath the protective cover of bedsheets, I engaged in the classic childhood game. Yet, on the third reveal, an ominous shadow, not my father's, reached out to me. Abruptly lifting the sheet, I found my father innocently ironing his clothes across the room, leaving me to confront a reality that transcended the ordinary.
The spiritual mysteries persisted, intertwined with the rituals of my mother's deliverance sessions at church. I witnessed spirits departing from those she fervently prayed for, a phenomenon both captivating and bewildering. And then, there was the enigma of second grade—an inexplicable moment where, after descending a yellow slide, I found myself simultaneously standing by the swingset, observing my own descent.
These childhood mysteries were not the products of an overactive imagination; they were glimpses into a reality that eludes conventional understanding. Pecan, Chanoklia, the shadow in the bedsheet, and the spectral observer by the swingset—all are fragments of a tapestry woven with the threads of the seen and the unseen.
In the intricate dance between adulthood and childhood, there's often a disheartening interference with the innate spirituality and untarnished purity of children. The seeds of fear and self-doubt, sown by well-meaning adults, can sprout into major obstacles, hindering a person's ability to connect with the spiritual realm. Fear becomes a potent root, giving rise to spiritual attachments that obscure one's perception of the spirit world.
It's awe-inspiring to recognize that certain children possess an inherent ability to see and communicate with spirits. This revelation offers a profound insight into the thinness of the veil that separates our physical reality from the spiritual realm. The key to this connection lies in the purity that children embody—a purity unburdened by the complexities and influences of the adult world.
As grown-ups, the journey back to this state of purity becomes a significant undertaking. The world's imprint on our consciousness necessitates dedicated time and shadow work, a process of introspection and self-discovery. The profound truth lies in the fact that children, in their unspoiled innocence, become our true teachers. The pathway forward entails revisiting the essence of a child, embracing that untainted connection with the spiritual.
If you observe signs of mediumship within your child, consider it a unique opportunity for growth—for them and for you. Cultivate and nurture these innate gifts, accompanying them on a journey of understanding and exploration. The goal is not merely to guide them but to learn alongside them, fostering an environment where they can freely express and live within their extraordinary gift.

can you do talking to the dead? its honeetly eo interesting and idrc for the living lol but maybe ghosts would be more interesting to talk too i just dont know how to become a medium?
I plan on (hopefully) covering all the topics in the poll at some point or another! It's just a matter of which ones go first.
However, I will say, I don't think you have to be a medium to speak with ghosts. A medium is a specific type of person, but not all people who work with or talk to ghosts are mediums. It's a sort of square/rectangle situation. I wouldn't call myself a medium, for example, but I do work with ghosts.
Mediums, by definition, pass messages from the dead to the living. They're middle men, literally. I don't do that, and therefore, I'm not a medium. I have relationships with ghosts and commune with the dead via skills I've developed for that purpose. The information I've got on interacting with ghosts won't directly correlate to being a medium, but it might be useful? I won't make promises about it, though.
(Tbh I gave being a medium a shot many years ago and found it absolutely exhausting. Channeling ghosts' messages is hard, and people get annoyed when they don't get the answers they want. Someone who's dead isn't that different from when they were alive, after all. If your deceased great-aunt hated you in life, she's unlikely to change her opinion in death!)

Conflict resolution, healing relationships, and clearing up the aftermath of volatile communications has been the name of the game in the last several readings I’ve done, and this channeled affirmation from my spirit guide, Salvador, continues on the theme of his previous quotes. The concepts of expectation, and agreement to (i.e. alignment with) a given energy as an act of choosing a future course have often been repeated in our channelings. To “agree” with something is to resonate with it in your emotional vibration - which determines much of our spiritual frequency, which in turn has all kind of effects on our physical reality. That is what this affirmation is about. I should also add that it’s very rare in the “spiritual shorthand” my guides use in readings for them to speak in the first person. When they do, it is almost always a sign that they are passing on a healing mantra or affirmation that will shift energy out of a counterproductive state. I am going to be using this over the next few days, and will see what happens. How about you? If you give this affirmation a whirl, let me know if you experience any changes in your interpersonal energies!
