The Weight of a Gift

Stannis recalls a young Sansa Stark gifting him a moment, a rare kindness that lingers even years later.

Imprisoned in the black cells, Sansa Stark finds solace in a quiet yet protective guard she calls "Storm Eyes” unaware he is Stannis Baratheon in disguise.

There was a TikTok post about an advertisement for “blood-making pills for weak women” someone found in a newspaper from the 1890s and everybody seemed to think it was just an example of the weird misogyny of the day and age but no. Anemia was a massive public health concern. It always has been through history but part of the reason we have this idea of old timey women thought history being physical weak, chronically cold and pale and fainting is because they often they were. Anemia was also a massive problem for men in that day but even now it disproportionally affects people who menstruate. So tonics full of stimulants and “healthful vitamins” were marketed at young women in pages upon pages of advertisements in every newspaper. People generally felt like shit all the time back then.

That's is an explanation I can follow

So, I read from an interview with Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria) that in the script there was just supposed to be a moment, a breath with Rhaenyra and Mysaria where it was obvious they were going to kiss and then they get interrupted but they don't, you know, {teeheehee} actually kiss. (That's me paraphrasing, mind you.) Emma D'Arcy stepped in and thought it would be better if the two did.

Aside from the obvious cut it out with the bullshit queerbaiting because this isn't about either character being queer. Mysaria is an opportunist who will fuck anyone to save her own skin and get ahead. And Rhaenyra is a sexual, passionate being and this moment was not about her being "queer." It was about her being lonely and vulnerable, and Mysaria was a warm body standing in for Daemon (just as Criston, and Harwin were, sorry to say, but true).

As for the in-story reason that Emma was right is because had it been kept as was in script it would have indeed been a moment. It would become a moment of yearning, longing between the two women, one that lingered in the air and created this deeper intimacy between them that became about the two of them that went beyond physicality. By making it physical, by making it a kiss, it made it exactly as what it was... which was Rhaenyra giving into her loneliness, her vulnerability, her missing Daemon.

So, yuppers, Emma was right. They know their character and what is best for the Daemyra love story. Keeping it as a "just a moment" would have diminished Daemyra. Since Daemon had abandoned her again, left Rhaenyra with no word for months, ignoring her ravens, she felt that she was once more alone and that they were, in her words, "over." So, Rhaenyra did what she had done when he abandoned her in the past: She turned to another momentarily to fill the hole he left in her.

The spikes on the grate and Helena getting pushed into them in the latest episode really foreshadows Helena's outcome. I can't be the only one who is seeing this, can I?

Once again, I have things to say about Daemon Targaryen.

I know, you're shocked. Me too.

Daemon stays back through the whole confrontation with the kids. By all rights, he should have gone to Baela and Rhaena, but he doesn't. He stays back and he goes quiet.

I have talked about the fact that Daemon is at his most dangerous when he's quiet, when he fades into the background, but this scene is an interesting version.

He stays back and he waits for Rhaenyra.

For the first time, we see him wait for someone else to make the first move. He trusts that this is an instant where she will be able to take control of the situation. And she does. For the first time in 10 years, she has someone in her corner fully and it gives her the strength to challenge Alicent. Daemon can stand back and do what he was always meant to do: defend Rhaenyra.

He moves when Criston does, but not to defend Rhaenyra. He stops Criston from interfering, but he lets her handle the rest. For the first time, they both have a partner, someone to rely on to have their back.

Something neither of them have had before.

Rhaenyra is the Queen and Daemon is her Sword Arm. Just as they were always meant to be.
