I quite a few songs on Lariel's playlist about her fiancé. A lot of them are quite negative. And more so talk about the social obligations. I wanted a more emotional song. (No more Kraler) Kassius Tilernos is the disgraced and disinherited noble son once of the Tilernos family. A Chelaxian noble born and bred.

This song I chose because Kassius was in Lariel's life for quite some time. Not all negative. At times he's her only connection to the outside world. He encourages her in some ways. And is downright cruel in others. And she struggles with figuring out if his feelings for her come from a genuine place, or if he is only using her for the connections to her family.

By the time she's is getting fitted for her wedding dress she realizes she doesn't and can't ever love him. Regardless of if his feelings are real or not. She doesn't believe she will be happy. So it's the catalyst for her escape and attacking him. Nearly destroying a church and scarring him in the process.

This song is Lariel realizing she can't sacrifice herself, her identity, and her potential happiness for him. Even if he had been kind, even if he loved her.

I still have got one more ask to answer, but I thought I’d give a little personal update here. Because I’m not sure what people do or do not know. But at the end of March I had emergency surgery.

I’m okay now. Recovering. Still have my stuff healing but it’s enough that I’m free to move around but no soaking in water. Basically had an internal rupture and had to have a part of me removed. Could have died if my doctor had not caught it then. Along with a lot of medication changes.

Symptoms and their severity come and go in waves. But specialists still have no idea what’s been happening to me since 2022. I know I used to openly talk a lot about my health issues on my blog. But since remaking I’ve moved a lot of that over to a personal blog. Just so I can keep this one neat and oc related. Also I worry I can sound like a downer. But it’s a good context to have. As I’m a person with a low spoon count.

But some things have improved and others have not. No more wheelchair! Walking is possible, but I still need a cane. Especially out in public. Balance is good some days others not. Nausea and dizziness still happen but they aren’t as debilitating.

Anyway realized not everyone who follows me might know about this stuff. Thanks for everyone’s kindness, support, and patience with me. Often times I have energy for one thing and not another. Or one thing can feel impossible while others are very manageable. Sending love to you all. 💕

This song is about a point in Lariel's life that I think is often glossed over. As she is want to do. To me this song is about feeling trapped, depressive, and crumbling under the pressure of expectations.

Song of one of her lowest points.

Her grandfather's ambitious wants for her to be a great sorcerer and follow in her grandmother's footsteps. Her mother's expectations of her engagement, the suppression of her curiosity and want for the outside world. Her fiancé (No longer Kraler, now Kassius) has his own ideas about how she should be molded to be a perfect wife. The forced obedience. Not feeling like she's in control of her own life. As if it's all been planned out and she has no say in it. A ghost haunting her own body.

But despite it all, she holds onto to hope.

The opening line is just so perfect always makes me laugh. 'I'm a tough bitch, but I'm sensitive.' That's him. This is a song about his volatile emotions and outbursts. How he usually handles crying or feeling any negative emotion really (Get Angy tm). The need to repent. It's also his warning to others to stay away. And a dash of his using causal sex as his outlet.

Canopy - Charlotte Day Wilson

This is certainly a Lariel heavy pov song. I love how at first it's a very almost aggressive, not quite, but trying to be upbeat song. This is very much Lariel's perspective on Zrise.

And she doesn't have perfect information, because he intentionally hides a lot from her. She'd be more sympathetic if she understood. But also Zrise pushes her away and lashes out at her after he returns from Galt. In a depressive spiral.

Much like how she had treated him before he'd left. So here is a song of Lariel being defensive but comes to an understanding. Seeing them as not so different. As the song shifts into something more slow and melancholy.

After returning home from Galt where he'd felt pretty helpless, pointless, and directionless. Calistria offered him something he'd never had. Power.

To me this is such a good toxic love song. I have the bias of believing the two of them whipping between trying to use the other. Make each other angry. Mixed in messily with real genuine emotions and affection. I think in someway they both want to feel safe and in control. Seen and accepted for who they are. But they've got some real raw wounds.

So some of this is their power struggle. The feelings of betrayal and reconciliation. Saying things they regret. The hot and cold. Who's chasing and whose being chased. Where sometimes they give, sometimes they take, and are both a bit insecure but keep going back to each other because they do care for each other despite it all.

Stonewall Stone Fence - Gregory and the Hawk

I've always loved this vocalist. In some ways Meredith has a lot of the qualities I imagine in Lariel's own voice. That kind of breathy yet melancholic tone. Winding and almost trembling.

The song itself I see as Lariel's very private nature. She is a hard person to really get to know. She holds these big powers, that often feel bigger than herself. Barely constrained to her psyhical form.

Her elemental air bloodline from a jaathoom shuyookh giving her some powers of wishcraft, dreams, and prophecy. Her other bloodline of being fey touched by a naiad queen. Where her otherworldly beauty, grace, and haunting luring voice comes from.

She has such an ethereal connection to places she isn't from, but also to the natural world around her. But it gives her a sometimes inhuman perspective of other people. I see her as very much always looking at people through a pane of glass, where as she feels the elements, the trees, the plants, and animals. Lariel also sees herself a secret keeper. Not just her own, but all others who share theirs with her.

Repent! - From Indian Lakes

So this choice took me the longest. I landed on this one just because I'm very attached to this band. The sound they have has changed over the years but this is from the album I feel in love with. Band at got me through some of the worst moments.

To me this song is about a heavy guilt. About finding forgiveness of oneself and ones mistakes in loving someone else. To me they both hold onto their mistakes and see themselves as disappointments but in seeing the other some of that is transformed. There's a kind of grief that comes with change. For Zrise in particular I see him as reconnecting with the parts of himself he has denied. Things he sees and admires in Siavash that he had kind of killed within himself.

Anyway sorry I emo kid once so…

Here I will mostly just quote my partner because oh boy did he think about Anton and music a lot. But it's a little scatterbrained. His adhd is worse than mine. But this goes for most of the songs on Anton's playlist as he constructs them differently than I do.

For Anton's playlist he did not pick any of the songs for their words. Because Anton kind of sees the voice in music as just another instrument. Words are just noise.

"Anton is a guy I thought of while watching the TV show Succession. I thought 'wow this all looks so exhausting. What if there was a guy who just didn't get it so much he circles back around to cutting through the bullshit.'"

In Anton's perspective everyone in 'society' is pretending to serve some higher purpose or have some big motivation, when he sees everyone as justifying a base desire.

Also, he doesn't trust people. He sees them as so wrapped up in things that ultimately don't matter. Anything that's a societal construct, and not just a need of the body, is something he doesn't trust others to understand about themselves.

He's the type to prefer seeing people openly angry, rather than pretending to be happy. But that said, he also sees others as too dependent on the opinions of others.

I can't remember how it came up. But just some Anton thoughts about tavern music. As a guy who travels a lot as a mercenary. Social music is like furniture. Like a clock. It is the marker of one moment to the next. The passage of time.

Because to Anton music is something you do naked for selfish reasons by the light of the moon. So more social atmospheric types don't really matter to him. He doesn't value audience size.

Some Azuki quotes that made me cry laugh. This is all said with affection. As my partner is actually a guitar player. Who has done performances etc.

These are the things your character claims are just “how they are” but really, they’re bleeding all over everyone and calling it a vibe.

╰ They say they're "independent." Translation: They don’t trust anyone to stay. They learned early that needing people = disappointment. So now they call it “being self-sufficient” like it’s some shiny badge of honor. (Mostly to cover up how lonely they are.)

╰ They say they're "laid-back." Translation: They stopped believing their wants mattered. They'll eat anywhere. Do anything. Agree with everyone. Not because they're chill, but because the fight got beaten out of them a long time ago.

╰ They say they're "a perfectionist." Translation: They believe mistakes make them unlovable. Every typo. Every bad hair day. Every misstep feels like proof that they’re worthless. So they polish and polish and polish... until there’s nothing real left.

╰ They say they're "private." Translation: They’re terrified of being judged—or worse, pitied. Walls on walls on walls. They joke about being “mysterious” while desperately hoping no one gets close enough to see the mess behind the curtain.

What, specifically, was the catalyst for their physical attraction (if applicable) to the other character? In other words, what in particular had them like “Oh, they’re…hot… His whole vibe is kind of immediate Aria bait lmao! From the attitude, the piercings, the muscles.... he was kinda made in a lab for her to activate all the awooga sirens... like a boyband. I think Zrise's more... Calistrian tendencies would also just activate her neurons. It would make her mad sometimes and be a turn-on other times lmao. I also think just how physically capable and dangerous Zrise is would be another aspect that ticks a box for her as soon as she witnesses it 7. Do they (or would they) pursue the other character’s affection, and if so, how? Do they tell the other character how they feel? Try to earn their admiration? Woo them with romantic gestures? Flirt with them, skillfully or otherwise? Aria would flirt and tease relentlessly but more in a way to invite BEING pursued. She would LOVE playing the game with Zrise, it would be incredibly enticing for her to feel like she's driving someone crazy for her lol. Acting like she's about to fall into his arms one moment and like she couldn't care less the next, rewarding behavior she likes, and giving the cold shoulder to anything she doesn't. 14. What makes them feel loved? Would they build up the courage to ask for it? I feel weird answering this one because I feel like Aria's answer is so similar to Zrise! It is for her a matter of being understood and accepted by her partner. Aria hasn't really been understood or loved since her father died and she's always on guard and puts up a wall of haughty superiority and a fiery temper to guard herself from being hurt. With Zrise I feel like Aria is the more emotionally inclined out of the two and would have to break down spill her guts at some point. 19. Are they okay with public displays of affection? Do they like them? YES! Especially with Zrise being the Knight Commander I think it would come off as status for her (teehee the kc likes meee) on top of just validation that she's not considered an embarrassment or a mere exotic curiosity. As long as it remains simple things like kissing, an arm around her waist or shoulder, or getting carried. She would draw the line at groping or making out in public. That would piss her off lmao 31. What little thing do they find incredibly (though harmlessly) annoying about their partner?

Aria loves romantic books and plays and has a very traditional view of how she thinks everything should go and how men should treat her if they're interested in her and I think that's where some of Zrise and his more forward and casual attitude towards sex and romance might tick her off lol

5. How do they consciously realize that they like the other character? Does it take them a while? For Aria it would definitely take a while! There would be an immediate physical attraction! Zrise I think is just her type to a tee so that's kind of unavoidable but Aria approaches romance very cynically. Growing up seeing her dad pine after her mom who never returned to them soured her feelings on finding any sort of happiness that way considerably and seeing her grandparents who treat their marriage more like a business partnership (maybe loving in their own weird way I don't know yet lol) she just didn't really have that many positive examples of it outside of the plays and books she grew up with. Aria would approach the romance trying to get something out of it for her grandparents, trying to utilize Zrise' position as the Knight commander to get them into positions that would allow them to influence Mendevian trade and politics to their benefit but Aria would absolutely go way too deep unintentionally lmao. It might sound simple but the moment she would realize she genuinely likes Zrise is the moment she realizes that she has FUN when she's with Zrise. I feel like they both have a very mean-spirited sense of humor, they have a lot in common with how their respective families treat them like disappointments and I think it would just be a simple matter of time before she realizes she likes spending time with him. (I can just picture them both laughing at an old person slipping on the sidewalk) 6. How do they react to the realization that they like the other character? Is it an “oh my god I’m never going to think about this again” thing, or are they pretty comfortable with it? Aria is the type to be genuinely afraid of this lmao. She wants to do right by her grandparents and she wants to be as cold and calculating as they are DESPERATELY but she just takes after her dad way too much. She'd get super weird around him for a while and act super awkward and avoid him like the plague. 24. What would their partner do that would really turn them on, perhaps unintentionally? Threatening, maiming and killing cultists, demons, people, just about anything that can talk (especially if it's on her behalf)! She's very attracted to dangerous people, specifically dangerous people she thinks are not dangerous to her specifically. Also when he's fighting real hard and gets all sweaty!! fhadkfaf 26. They have an argument with their partner—what is it about? Do things stay respectful, or is there some shouting and accusing going on?

Having most of what she knows about romance come from her hopeless romantic father and what she's seen in plays and read in books I think the main source of conflict between them would come from Aria just having unrealistically high standards of what a romantic relationship should be and Zrise is well... himself and a Calistrian lmao. Aria normally just doesn't handle being angry all that well, she has a hot temper so it almost immediately devolves into yelling every time I would imagine! I think her process with Zrise is Step 1. Explode Step 2. Silent treatment/fish for an apology Step 3. That didn't work! Make him jealous! Step 4. Get someone Killed with step 3. Step 5. Make up
