Headcanon that during exams Ravenclaws just prop their common room door open with a spare book so that students don’t have to worry about solving any goddam riddles after studying all night. #finals solidarity

ok but imagine: harry isn’t the only first year to discover the mirror of erised. draco finds the mirror too and when he stands in front of it, he frowns when all he sees is harry potter shaking his hand. imagine how he returns the next year to find that the mirror has been removed, but he keeps searching until he rediscovers it only to see himself holding the snitch with harry potters hand on his shoulder. imagine how he, after having figured out what it does, returns the next year, and the year after, how he grows more nervous with each return, the mirror only ever showing him images of potter grinning or potter nudging him or potter throwing his arm around his shoulder so that when draco returns to the mirror in fifth year, he’s all filled up with anger and anxiety, swearing to himself that this time it will NOT be potter he sees. when all he sees is potter taking his hand though, he snaps, throws a massive fit, tries to destroy the mirror with hexes, punches and kicks and starts screaming at it when he finds he can’t. he never returns to it after that

Imagine 8th year harry and draco getting past their animosity
and one night when harry can’t sleep he’s wandering around the castle and stumbles upon draco who also had nightmares, so they kind of just start walking around the castle together at night when they both can’t sleep, and at first they walk around silently but eventually they start stilted conversations that turn into hesitant smiles and then easy banter
and then one night during their walks they come across the mirror of erised, and harry automatically knows what it is, even if the mirror’s image has changed to include a blond standing beside his parents. It makes his heart ache, that he desires something else that is so out of his reach, so he tries to ignore the ache and instead he asks draco what he sees, just a little curious, and draco just gives him a droll look and says “what do you mean, what do i see? it’s a mirror, potter, obviously i see you and me”

Everyone is always going on and on about how unobservant Harry is.
But I like to think it was a product of growing up neglected; learning to be noticed as little as possible, and spending basically his entire life in the wizarding world facing off against evil.  So its not entirely that at his core he was unobservant but that he had learned it, because he had learned growing up to take up as little space as possible, both emotionally and physically.
So to Harry it became second nature to not notice things because god he didn’t want anyone noticing anything about him.
Except after the war, when he returns for 8th year he starts to notice all kinds of things; the way Dean and Seamus sit oh so close and gosh did they always do that, the way Ron and Hermione both tense up when the other one isn’t in the room but relax as soon as they’re near each other, the way people seem hopeful and scared all at once, or even small things like the way the wind sounds blowing against the window when he can’t sleep.
And the more he notices, the more he finds that maybe he wouldn’t quite mind if someone else noticed him.
Which is exactly how he starts to notice Malfoy.  Because now that he has started noticing all kinds of things he recognizes what these things mean too…and he definitely recognizes the slump of Malfoy’s shoulders, or the way his head turns up whenever someone new enters a room, or the way he finds every corner to sit in as soon as entering a room, and especially the way he’s always alone.  Because Harry knows exactly what it looks like when you don’t want people to notice you.
And the more Harry looks the more he can’t stop looking, and he wonders how he could have spent so many years obsessed with Malfoy but never actually noticing things about him; like the way he cradles his tea as if absorbing its warmth before drinking it, the way he licks his lips when he reads, the way his face looks flushed and healthy only when he sneaks back into the castle after a secret broom ride (except its not so secret because Harry is pretty much always watching him), or the way he reads muggle novels in the library when he thinks no one can see.
Until one day, when Harry has his head buried in a book studying, and someone sits down beside him and he doesn’t even need to look up to know who it is because he recognizes the sounds Malfoy makes when he pulls out a chair and the way he holds his breath when he’s nervous and especially the way he smells; like fresh air and too strong tea and ink - he smells like hope Harry thinks, holding his breath too as Malfoy slides down into the seat beside him.
“So…” Malfoy whispers.
”So,” Harry answers back, still staring at the book in front of him, almost afraid to look at Malfoy as if he might spook him.
“I wasn’t sure if you’d be here,” Malfoy finally says after several minutes of silence which should be awkward but instead just feel charged with anticipation.
“I’m always here on Saturdays,” Harry says, finally turning to look at Malfoy.  He wonders why he looks so nervous.
“I know,” Malfoy huffs, finally making eye contact with Harry and the look in his eyes makes something deep and tight in Harry’s chest uncurl because oh…oh.  Maybe he hasn’t been the only one noticing things.
“Did you want-”
“Yes,” Malfoy blurts out.
“I didn’t even finish asking you.  What if I asked if you wanted to go jump in the lake naked and look for the giant squid,” Harry says, his face breaking out into a smile that seems to make Malfoy relax.
“Still would’ve said Yes,” Malfoy says, no hint of sarcasm.
“Oh.  Well aright then.”  And Harry does something which feels a bit brave and a bit stupid and reaches over to lay his hand on Malfoy’s knee.  Only instead of yelling at him or pushing him away Malfoy smiles, for what Harry thinks must be the first time that whole year, and lays his own hand over Harry’s.
“Alright,” Malfoy says, linking their fingers.
And Harry smiles again, because yeah things really are alright.

You have any fic recs for 8th year drarry?
So I’ve finally got round to rec-ing drarry 8th year!!! This has been a long time coming so thank you guys for your patients, I just really wanted this to be thorough as it’s my favourite genre. On this list I’ve included all fics that include going back to Hogwarts after the war (because some don’t strictly focus on 8th year, instead call it re-doing 7th year). All fic’s here are also pretty long, I thought I wouldn’t included one-shots because you’d be waiting on me forever to finish that list. So if you guys want to see an 8th year one shot rec just ask and I’ll do that separately. I completely adore 8th year fics, so hope you enjoy (my absolute favs are marked with ***)
Bond ***  Yet another one of those Harry And Draco Are Forced To Be Together By Something Beyond Their Control And Then Stuff Happens Leading To Twoo Wuv stories. Because every HD writer has to write at least one. [Finished]
Mental ***   Harry thinks he’s spent enough time sharing a mind with somebody else thank you very much.
Right Hand Red ***   Harry felt Malfoy’s breath on his lips as they came together over the bottle, hands firmly planted on the floor as though they each needed their familiar soil, refusing to cross into enemy territory.
To Give Everything   Draco finds The Room, a torture chamber in the Hogwarts dungeons and longs for someone to submit to him. Harry finds he needs that and more.
At your Service  ***   Hogwarts students are in danger; Harry is determined to save them all. There’s only one thing he knows for certain: Draco Malfoy is somehow involved. An eight year fic.
Love Comes Tumbling***   'Harry’s thoughts were of how much he would have done differently with Malfoy over the years, and of Dumbledore’s final words to the other boy … “It is my mercy, and not yours, that matters now.” Maybe, Harry wondered, he could find some mercy, too, and give Malfoy the second chance that Dumbledore had believed him worthy of.’
Tug O Want  Harry is back at Hogwarts minding his own business when he finds himself magically drawn to Draco Malfoy. Over and over again.
Get Some***   Harry is sick of everyone treating him differently after the war, and catches onto the one person who doesn’t seem to care
Let Me be Your Voice  As the hero of the revolution, Harry leads the wizarding world in its efforts to rebuild; but first old wounds must be tended, rifts caused by hate mended, and his history with Draco Malfoy seems like the perfect place to start.
When the Songbird Stopped Singing   Shortly after the war, Draco Malfoy wakes up with a new understanding, and Harry Potter needs firmer ground to walk on. Unfortunately, life is never easy, especially with the burdens of N.E.W.T.s looming closer. As Draco struggles to maintain his sanity, Harry is back to his old routine—stalking Draco.
Marginal Notes    When you’re 18, and nothing is as it was meant to be, sometimes it can be hard to let the right people know what you are thinking.
Two Sides of the Same Coin***  Harry and Draco find out the hard way that the line between hate and love is a fine one, and that somewhere between the Battle of Hogwarts and being thrust back together as Hogwarts eighth years, they may have just crossed it.
Don’t Think Twice  Harry was just trying to get away for a while. He didn’t mean to get trapped in the Prefect’s Bath with Draco Malfoy.
Unknown Pleasures  The Room of Requirement was definitely broken. Why else would it be presenting Harry with a whip, some handcuffs, a blindfold, and a… what exactly was that thing, anyway?
Hurt for the Right Reasons  Everything was so cocked up. He just wanted this one thing. He wanted to hurt for the right reasons for once.
Punishment Harry loses an impromptu wager with unforeseen consequences that open doors neither he nor Draco Malfoy had known existed.
How to Handle an Enemy Everyone knows that it’s no fun playing truth or dare with a Slytherin. But add a little Veritaserum, a scheming duo of Slytherin girls and surprising things can be revealed. Particularly about the fine line between love and hate…
The Potter Malfoy Problem  The room of requirement’s gone mad — at least, that’s what Harry thinks. There’s no way that Draco Malfoy ‘requires’ him, of all people, but why does it keep dragging Harry there like he’s some kind of furniture, every time Malfoy enters it? Throw in Pansy the pervert and a clipboard-wielding Hermione, and things can only go from bad to worse. And that’s not even mentioning the pirates …
Dragon Tamer   Desperate to avoid an arranged marriage, Draco convinces Harry to pretend to be his boyfriend. What follows is an epic romantic comedy involving scheming, snogging, silliness, shagging, snarky boys, superstars, singing, shagging, snuggling, secrets, sex gods, shagging, and a bunny named Draco Lucius Malfoy the Third.
Absolution   Draco and Harry return to Hogwarts after the war, both struggling with their own issues. Their unlikely friendship blooms into more but is torn apart by circumstances outside their control. Warnings for slash, language and explicit sexual content.
Aftermath  Harry returns to Hogwarts to finish his education but there have been a few changes – the most important of which is a Slytherin in the Gryffindor dorms and a teacher who is acting suspiciously.
An Act of Simple Devotion   It’s a age-old story. You fancy a boy and you think he fancies you. Sure there are problems – attacks on former Death Eaters, crazed tabloid journalists and your girlfriend – but you have a cunning plan. Now if he’d only explain the L. Ron Hubbard-like references …
Draco Malfoy it’s your Lucky Day Even though he’s unarmed, injured, lost in the Forbidden Forest, and facing a possible murder charge, Draco Malfoy gets lucky.
For all the Marbles  The prompt I worked with “Harry has lost his marbles and Draco helps him find them.” I had a lot of fun with it. Hope you enjoy it!
He was He and I was a Bunny The war is over and “eighth year” is about to begin at Hogwarts. But for Harry and Draco, nothing is quite the same. Harry’s looking for an escape, Draco’s looking for a friend. Does a little black bunny hold the answers for both of our boys?
Master Work  Harry’s eighth-year at Hogwarts is going about as well as all the others. Someone is out to get him, Aurors keep questioning him about the final battle and, worst of all, Draco is determined to repay his life debt to Harry.
Moving On  Harry tries to put his life back together after the fall of Voldemort, but it’s more complicated than he thought. And he hadn’t counted on war changing everything around him so much.
Trajectories  Rembrandt’s phrase in describing his painting: “Die meeste ende di naetureelste beweechgelickhijt”, can be translated as greatest, most natural movement (emotion or motive).
Unexpected Consequences*** Harry was going back to school. He was going to play Quidditch, sleep in lessons, hang out with his friends, and generally just enjoy being a kid for a change. And he was also going to do it while being bonded with Malfoy, because apparently life was just going to continue throwing curveballs at him. Harry didn’t know why he expected anything different.
Helix*** Seven months after the end of the war, Harry is feeling lost. Fortunately, he is about to be offered an unexpected and sparkling chance to find himself again. [2014 advent fic]
In the Interest of Inter-House Co-operation Organizing a Duelling Club was supposed to be a fun extracurricular activity for Harry’s 8th year. But add in Draco Malfoy and a malfunctioning Room of Requirement, and things can’t help but get complicated.
No Greater Victory  Back at Hogwarts after the war, a defeated Draco Malfoy is prepared to settle for life’s simpler pleasures: snark, sex, and Slytherin scheming. That is until Pansy, newly in possession of Malfoy Manor, offers to return his ancestral home. Just one condition: he has to win, and break, Harry Potter’s heart to get it. That’s no problem. Draco’s got this situation completely under control. Completely. At least until he doesn’t.
Draco Malfoy is not Attractive  Draco Malfoy is NOT attractive. Not even one bit. Nope
Something I Don’t Want to Stop  It’s Harry and Draco’s eighth year, the Houses have been all but demolished in favor of unity, and they’re being forced to room together. How ever will they cope?
What Malfoys Don’t Do  There are things that Malfoys simply don’t do. They don’t cry, or show any emotion unless entirely unavoidable. They don’t back down. And they certainly don’t admit that maybe, just maybe, they might be wrong about a few things.Draco’s back for his eighth year, and with everything that’s changed, these basic rules will soon be called into question.
White Lies  Draco drinks a potion that makes him know if a person is lying, and Harry, apparently at fault that Draco is this way, is forced to 'help’ him with the effects of the potion. For the first time, they deal with each other with no lies to hide behind.
Oh and I’m going to try and keep this list updated, so don’t be alarmed if it keeps getting longer

I’m sorry.
Those were the words he meant to say, shallow and pointless as they would be. Instead he says, “Show me your scars.”
Malfoy raises his chin a notch. “Show me yours.”
Harry nods slowly and holds out his hand where I must not tell lies still glints silver.
Malfoy watches. Silently.
Harry pulls up the leg of his jeans to reveal four marks, one almost star shaped, one a small line, the others just dots, on his calf. “My aunt’s… my uncle’s sister’s dog,” he finds himself saying. “Ripper… she thought it was fun to let him chase me. I… I didn’t always run fast enough.” He pulls the material higher, revealing a jagged scar and a badly skinned knee. Tiny stones, black shadows, linger beneath the poorly healed skin. “I fell off my bike. It was old… garbage, really; someone was throwing it away. I’d mended it, but it wobbled a lot. I actually don’t know if it just fell apart or if my cousin knocked me off it.”
Malfoy still doesn’t say anything and Harry begins to unbutton his shirt. He slips it off and it puddles, unheeded, on the tile.
He points to two streaks of silver, one longer than the other, on his arm, just below his shoulder. “Here’s the marks from the Horntail’s tail… the Triwizard Tournament, you know?” And to the rough patch above it, spreading to the back of his shoulder. “A frying pan. It was hot.”
When his aunt swung it at him, it knocked his shoulder out of joint, too. But Malfoy only asked about scars.
His fingers graze his other arm. “Nagini bit me here… and…” He touches the center of his chest with both hands, half framing, half concealing the shiny oval at the center of his chest. “The Horcrux… Slytherin’s locket… it… Hermione had to cut it off me.”
“The Horcruxes were real then?” Malfoy’s voice waivers slightly.
“Yeah.” Harry holds out his other arm, and Malfoy draws his finger down the mark, long and twisting, where Wormtail cut him that night in the graveyard; Malfoy’s expression is very shuttered. Harry thinks he knows why… it’s where a Dark Mark would be… if he had one. It even has the same curl at the bottom.
Malfoy’s eyes raise to meet Harry’s.
“I got that the night Voldemort was… reborn.”
“And this?” Malfoy touches a thin line on his ribs. Harry turns a little, letting Malfoy run his finger along the length of the scar.
“A spatula. My aunt… she would have hit me with the flat part, I think. But I was struggling and…” Harry shrugs a bit, “well… she caught me with the edge. It bled a lot.”
Harry turns back, trying very hard to read Malfoy’s face.
He can’t.
Even as Malfoy reaches up and brushes his forehead with gentle fingers. “And this. When you were just a baby… when he… when V-Voldemort… murdered your parents. And… tried… to kill you…”
“Yeah.”
“Is that all of them?”
Harry exhales, sort of a cross between a sigh and a humorless laugh. “I doubt it. I think those are all the big ones, though.”
For a moment Malfoy just looks at him, really looks.
Malfoy’s eyes are grey, more fog than storm, and flecked with hints of blue and green and even lavender. When he speaks his voice is ragged. “I… I think I’ll have that shower now.”

I am so disappointed by the Nagini reveal, for five really big reasons:
1) Having Nagini be a cursed Asian woman who was then Voldemort’s pet for a majority of her life is just so racist and so wrong on so many levels. Correct me if I am wrong, but the only other canonical Asian character in the series is Cho Chang, the brief love interest of two characters who gets almost no development as a character. Now we have a Korean woman who is literally dehumanized.
2) She made a Korean woman a pet, specifically. So she is a Korean witch who was cursed to become a snake, who is a cannibal, and is Voldemort’s pet. ((Also, it looked like she was caged in the trailer, as a group of white witches and wizards looked on in amazement as she became slowly less human. That’s the most messed up cross between a sideshow, a human zoo, and medical exploitation that I can think of))
3) I assume that this blood curse is supposed to work like a genetic disorder? Passed down between two people with two infected X chromosomes? But like with Lycanthropy being symbolic of HIV, this doesn’t really make sense in the context of symbolism. Because instead of making the condition monstrous, she is making the individual with the condition a monster. Lupin can’t control infecting others, his werewolf side will deliberately seek out victims if he wasn’t subdued by potions. That was bad, but Nagini being a cursed woman is so much worse. Because she was presented to us as an irredeemable, hatedmonster. One that gladly kills and consumes innocent human beings. It doesn’t even matter if she was under the control of Voldemort or contaminated by his soul. It almost makes it worse, because then she would be a cursed Korean woman puppetted by Voldemort and used as a pet.
4) It’s an antithesis to everything the original books stand for. Remember how there’s no such thing as dirty blood? How that was a huge theme of equality? How people should marry based on who they love, not outdated ideals of whose bloodline was better or more pure? Introducing blood curses doesn’t undo that, but introducing blood curses that turn innocent witches into deadly predators kind of does. Because, again, this kind of curse doesn’t work the way that a genetic disorder does. Nagini isn’t just someone with a condition, she is someone with a condition that actively murders people using it. She’s someone with a condition which makes her literally venomous to other people.
I can’t even view it another way, because we were explicitly instructed to not think of Nagini as human. She was at best a dangerous predator loyal to Voldemort, and at worst a horocrux. We were never given any reason to empathize with her, to view her as human, as equal, or even as particularly autonomous. Her death was one of the most celebrated moments in both the books and the movies, showing Neville’s climb from joke to hero and finally destroying the last of Voldemort’s ties to Earth. But that was a cursed human woman who was caged and used to entertain western wizards who jeered at her condition, and because this is a spin-off series and not a plot thread within the original novels that doesn’t re-contextualize her enough.
Also, unless Mrs. Norris is outed as being one of these Maledictus’, there are literally no sympathetic characters with this condition. It’d be like taking out Lupin, so the only Werewolf we see is Greyback. Suddenly Lycanthropy looks a lot more malicious and fears about Werewolves feel more justified. If the only Werewolf we ever see is a sexual predator that eats children, would readers be so quick to think of anti-werewolf laws as oppressive?
Maybe you could argue that is the point, by making viewers rethink their biases and how we could fall into the same mentality as blood purists… But that isn’t how Harry Potter is structured. Readers have never really been encouraged to view things from the perspective of Death Eaters. It’s always been structured to see the world through the eyes of innocent children who are learning about and fighting against systematic injustice. That’s why we’re almost always introduced to a good example of someone who is discriminated against, before seeing the bad side (Excluding Muggles, since the Dursleys are terrible, but we’re all muggles so that’s a grey zone). We see Lupin before Greyback, Dobby before Kreacher, Hagrid before Grawp, and so on. Every time, the condition that they possess is introduced in a way that is humanizing and sympathetic, before we see the opposite extreme that wizards likely think of when they hear about a giant or a house elf.
My point being, a lot of people could look at Nagini now and think, ‘Wow, witches with this condition just shouldn’t have children, because they’re just making more monsters.’ And if this is supposed to be an allegory, that’s not the message that we want people to pick up on. It’s not only really similar to blood purism in HP, but also ongoing debates about who should be allowed to reproduce.
5) Nagini’s relationship to Voldemort in the books was symbolic of his disconnect from humans and just how little humanity he had left. He was almost as snake-like as she was, she was his closest companion, one of the only beings he actually showed any concern for (Maybe because she was a Horocrux? I don’t know). With her as a snake, that adds to the idea that he can’t love, the thing that separates him from Harry. The only thing he cares about is a possession that he can literally control. With her as a human, that throws that theory up in the air because he did seem to care about her to at least some degree.

A note on Nagini
Even if it wasn't JKR's specific choice to cast her as an Asian woman, there is a cinema/media trope known as "Yellow Peril," which has been popularized in Western & Western European media since the 19th Cent.
Some other examples of this trope include Dr. No & Yao in the Bond series, the doctors in Jurrassic Park/World & Hemlock Grove, Sao Feng in Pirates of the Carribean, Marvel's Mandarin (in the Iron Man films, this is a whole other mess & Marvel's Asian portrayals in general are problematic), Silas in Disney's Halloweentown, Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon, and even Mr. Chow in the Hangover series.
Additionally, Asian women in particular are shown as subservient pr especially passive in media. Mantis is a GREAT example of this behavior, but there is also Lady Deathstrike in X-Men (who is ALSO a villain), Knives in Scott Pilgrim (also exhibits villain qualities at one point), Lara Jean in To All the Boys I've Loved Before, & Mona in Pretty Little Liars (also has a mean streak). Bonus: She isn't a villain, but Edna Mode in the Incredibles is a massive Asian charicature and Disney really struggles with Asian representation in media.
The issue with HP and the misrepresentation of Asian women stems widely from there really only being a handful of Asian characters in the series. Cho Chang serves as an unattainable object of desire for Harry, and spends roughly 70% of her time crying. With Nagini, we have an Asian character who has been cursed & forced to remain an animal, and is kept as a pet by Voldemort & serves him as a proxy for evil deeds, and as a proxy for his soul. Nagini becomes a proxy of evil, who is so wicked that her actions result in her being beheaded by Neville. Harry & Voldemort are mirror characters, albeit imperfect mirrors, and this shows that Asian women are objects of desire, meant to be claimed, and to serve. In a foil-istic manner, Harry does not succeed in his attempt to obtain Cho, but Voldemort does succeed in obtaining Nagini. It may not have been JKR's casting choice, but it was a casting choice made in poor taste that prepetuates Yellow Peril in cinema & other media.
You can make the counter-argument that it was just chance that Nagini was cast as an Asian woman, but historically speaking, in popularized media, Asians are portrayed commonly as villains, and Asian women are pretty consisently written as being passive, submissive, and subservient, with a particular predilection towards doing or participating in "evil" things.
Nagini being cast as an Asian woman was not an accident. It was a specific, cinematic choice, made in poor taste, that will continue to prepetuate the idea of Yellow Peril, and through continued misrepresentation, harm Asian persons.
*feel free to add*

ok... help me understand why everyone is upset with nagini being an asian woman.. like does every single person of color have to play the good roles? POC can't be villains? because that's , racist somehow ? i don't understand why is this a problem
it’s not about people of colour not being able to be villains - indeed, there are some truly fantastic villains of colour (killmonger springs to mind)
the problem is that she exists to become a subservient asian lady to voldemort, which is a super big stereotype in hollywood (to use another marvel example, Mantis) based on the idea that asian women are submissive/subservient
it’s also kind of a bad look for the Fantastic Beasts series because afaik, we have three characters of colour, and one of them is presumably a villain (whats-her-face newt’s ex), one of them is just a hardass obstacle (president lady) and now we have a subservient asian woman who gets turned into an animal (ALSO a problematic trope in hollywood, see: any fucking disney film about people of colour)
like. this would be different if there were any notable heroes of colour in the Fantastic Beasts franchise (set in a very racially loaded time period), or even the harry potter franchise in general.
but idk i’m white so i might be wrong? asian women pls help out if possible?

headcanon Drarry/Maledictus
the new trailer of fantastic beasts killed me … and at this point we almost know nothing about the wizards who are a Maledictus. We only know that from Pottermore: a witch or wizard who carries a blood curse which ultimately turns them into a beast forever.
So imagine …
* Draco being a Maledictus - the blood curse is breaking free when he is turning 17
* after the war Draco and Harry start dating, but Draco can‘t keep the secret about his blood curse
* every now and then Draco turns into an animal/beast … he can‘t control it, but there are signs like a bad headache or something like that before it happens
* when Harry learns about it and sees Draco for the first time as a wolf/dragon or whatever, he is determined to help his boyfriend
* and one day… in their early 30‘s … Harry is coming home and sees the white wolf in his livingroom - an almost sad and heartbreaking look in the grey eyes, because Draco knows that he won‘t turn back into his human form ever
* and Harry does what he was practicing for years… he turns into his animagus so Draco doesn‘t have to be alone forever and feels a little bit normal
