Ji-yeong was in a situation in which she could have shared any secret with no shame or repercussions, in which she openly talked about her childhood trauma and history as a survivor of abuse and sexual assault by her own father, but the one thing she didn’t share was her family name

you can look at this two ways

on one hand, you can see it as the extent to which she hates that name and everything it represents, that she would still withhold it even with nothing to lose

on the other hand, she shared her given name moments before she gave her life for Sae-byeok. after spending years dragging her family name around with her, she was finally able to let it go and be herself

Sae-byeok gave Ji-yeong to opportunity to define herself, maybe for the first time in her life, and she died as the version of herself that she chose to be.
