Crystal of the Month: Aprictot Agate
Apricot Agate is a name used for a pale pink/ pale orange/ pale yellow agate in colours that remind some people of apricot fruit. It's often banded with a white/ cream agate. It is a variety of Chalcedony; a fibrous variety of Quartz. Apricot Agate forms as small nodules usually in igneous rocks. They are almost always banded and frequently have a crystalline centre. The stones we sell are small nodules that have been tumbled to a round and smooth finish. I use this stone to remind me of the childlike innocence we all have but forget. ‘Looking at the world with freshness and clarity’. A lovely ‘ahhh’ in your pocket.

Has The Menopause Got It’s Claws Into You?
According to the news this morning, England’s Health Watchdog, NICE, has said that “Doctors should be more prepared to discuss hormone replacement therapy as a possible treatment for the menopause”. Whilst the report acknowledges that many women are “suffering in silence”, it does not say that more women should be taking HRT. But it does urge doctors and patients to look again at the potential risks and benefits of HRT. Sadly, the only alternatives mentioned are healthy eating, exercise and CBT!
I started the menopause at the age of 40, and my GP recommended that I took HRT. The reason was that owing to my age then, there was a higher risk of heart attack or stroke. Upon taking it I immediately felt wonderful, and continued to do so for about 10 years, when we decided I should stop it. BANG! The symptoms returned in full force, and of course now I was 10 years older, and less tolerant of the ghastly symptoms such as night sweats, hot flushes and extreme tiredness!
Let’s get one thing straight. I am NOT against HRT when it is recommended for medical reasons. Also, many poor women start the symptoms just around the time their teenage children develop raging hormones, and life at home can’t be easy! But, having done some research I have discovered that many women experience the same as me – the symptoms return when they stopped the HRT, and I do believe that this should be explained before taking it.
Don’t despair! There are good alternatives. In my case, acupuncture helped me get through my second menopause unscathed. Homeopathy is excellent, too, particularly if it is started before stopping the HRT, and I recommend both to my clients.
Many books have been written on the subject, notably by Marilyn Glenville, whose knowledge is extensive, and her original book, Natural Alternatives to HRT, was very helpful to me. She has since written many more, all of which are excellent.
So, I feel that it is important to discuss all the alternatives with your GP. It’s all about weighing up the different choices. Don’t suffer in silence – there is help out there!
