One of Chopin's most priceless performance remarks is at the beginning of this Nocturne - "sotto voce". Just like that: not a girlish "piano,” not an ambivalent "mezzo forte,” not even meaty forte (the last thing you want here is an "opera" voice for this melody). It effectively bars all over-the-top cheap and showy "expressive emotions" - no eye rolling allowed, no hair flailing, no hands flying, no sobs, no visible tears... A musical equivalent of the famed British "keeping a stiff upper lip"- this "sotto voce" gives us the right sense of what this piece is about. Just as Chopin's 2nd sonata, this nocturne deals directly and openly with such tragic subjects as death, loss and grief... except, here you are allowed to leave personal comments... This Nocturne is a commentary - or an epitaph... If you ever visit La Madeleine in Paris (Chopin's parish church where his funeral was held on October 30th, 1849) think about this Nocturne, okay?

Music is painted upon a canvas of silence.
Mozart said ‘rests are just as important as notes, silence is the greatest effect in music’.
The virtuoso, whose existence depends on moving great audiences knows that a skillfully placed rest or perhaps a grand pause knows that rests and pauses are of vital importance in a performance. Often times the effect of the pauses in the music is greater than the notes. They serve to attract and prepare the mind and can have a powerful effect in your performances.
Poise, in music is often largely a matter of the correct observance of the full value of rests. The composer in creating the composition did so with a very distinct sound in mind. The balance and symmetry of sound or notes and then pauses. So take time to breath in your performances, take a breath between the phrases and be sure to always observe the full value of the rests in a composition.

A True Artist

“I never neglect an opportunity to improve, no matter how perfect a previous interpretation may have seemed to me. In fact, I often go directly home from the concert and practice for hours upon the very pieces I have been playing, because during the concert certain new ideas have come to me. Those ideas are very precious , and to neglect them or to consider them details to be postponed for…

Chopin’s credo must remain at the forefront of our minds: ‘A well-formed technique, it seems to me, [is one] that can control and vary [bien nuancer] a beautiful sound quality’. To play the complete sets of the Op.10 and/or Op.25 études, in view of their extreme technical demands – and even greater musical demands, while encompassing their considerable diversity of moods and the wide range of expression contained in them – requires constant attention in order to simplify them. Any technical adjustments necessary often have simple solutions, removing the need to battle with the piano' …

Chopin was a genius of universal appeal. His music conquers the most diverse audiences. When the first notes of Chopin sound through the concert hall there is a happy sigh of recognition. All over the world men and women know his music. They love it. They are moved by it. Yet it is not “Romantic music” in the Byronic sense. It does not tell stories or paint pictures. It is expressive and personal, but still a pure art. Even in this abstract atomic age, where emotion is not fashionable, Chopin endures. His music is the universal language of human communication. When I play Chopin I know I speak directly to the hearts of people!

In the sphere of piano performance or piano artistry there are few human activities where the necessity for extraordinary physical prowess is so closely aligned with the greatest intellectual and emotional capacities. The virtuoso must possess a memory capable of maintaining thousands of pages of music in the mind and fingers, under the stress and distractions of public performance; the virtuoso must be cultured and self-aware, musically able to convey the great range of meaning embodied within a chosen repertoire; the virtuoso must project both physical excitement and emotional communication; and the virtuoso must experience life to the fullest while remaining cloistered with an instrument in a relentless quest to maintain his or her craft at its highest level. http://www.theartofpianoperformance.com/http://www.theartofpianoperformance.com/ #PianoArtistry #PianoLessons #pianolessonsonline #pianolessonsforkids #pianolessonsinBocaRaton
