⊰ “ I literally read all your discourse stuff in the tags and OMG... I couldn't agree with you more. The making Sasori into an emotionless person is one that particularly gets on my nerves. And when they make him seem worse than he really is. I don't know if there is a term for that. Like doing the opposite of woob. But it's just really nice to see someone else on the same wavelength.” ⊱
I’m gonna put this under a read more bc boy I never shut up !
Thanks anon I’m glad you agree its always nice to open the IB to an anon whos not tying to have beef KGKDKGJdG. I mean yeah Sasori’s totally a stoic but the thing is thats all he is. Its a facade. A very good one which was ingrained into him by the teachings of his village & his own pain but its just an ‘act’ so to speak.
Sasori is VERY capable of emotion & very much experiences emotion. He may not express it openly or even deny it but its absolutely a thing. He is not emotionless. He is not unable to truly feel. ( Hes not even unable to form connections with others. Sasori’s loneliness up to a point was NOT his own doing. Its made clear Sasori wasn’t a ‘loner’ because of being an edgy little prick or anything like that. He was a loner because of his Prodigy status & his reputation. He was not even ten years old & he was already renowned & infamous throughout the war, they were calling him Sasori of the red sand. Suna’s enemies out of fear & suna itself out of lionising his proficiency as their solider & weapon. It was claimed he soaked the desert sands red in blood hence the moniker. Its not that he wanted that. He just did what he was trained to do. Its not that he wanted to be alone. His loneliness & desire for human affection is.... a big part of him. )
Its really sad actually because Sasori himself doesn’t seem to fully understand his own trauma ( I dont expect him to of course, like. . . theres a lot ) & not only that but it was... Idealised to him.
He ‘feels numb”. Its a heavy result of his obvious depression which started when he was only 5 & lost his parents. But he explains it as being like a puppet & embraces it as such because not only is Sasoris literal coping method puppets & this is his way of comforting himself but this “numbness” was taught to him as ideal by his village. So instead of understanding an issue he can work on & improve just thinks its how shinobi are suppose to be.
THOUGH AT THE SAME TIME.... Sasori’s incredibly intelligent ( Scarily so, hes literally a high-level genius ) & I’m pretty sure one of the many key elements of his story was his own realisation that his villages teachings were flawed & they were using him & other shihobi as mere instruments of this flawed idea which was wildly inhumane & unfair, particularly when they came to try & blame him for the death of his only friend ( noted as the only person who treated him as a person ) when he was actually trying to help said friend.
Sasori fashioned himself entirely as a big old fuck you to his village surrounded by & using the only happy place he knew. The only things he found reliable & safe. Relating humans & puppets became so easy for him, idealising puppets in place of people was second nature especially due to his village treating people as puppets.
That said Sasori knows what hes doing. While theres a break in reality there for sure Sasori knows the whole human puppet thing is morbid per se. He knows its going against ‘morality’ & ‘humanity’ & all that kinda thing but thats one of the appeals of it. Hes making a statement in that way. shinobi dont like to admit it but Sasori emphasises that theyre all just puppets. Toy soldiers. However by making them human puppets Sasori in a way thinks hes improved them as well, helped them, preserved them, because now they’re eternal. Like this is definitely not a one dimensional thing. Its extremely compound.
SO YEAH!! Big time agree with you I know people seem to take pointing out the tragic nature of any villain is woobifying but... Its not. Its not when A) its canon facts, its what the character is SUPPOSE to be & B) pointing out these facts are not being used as absolute excuses for the ‘bad things’ the character has done / is doing or being used to demonise any other character to make that character look better.
( Huge example being the Loki vs Thor situation in the marvel fandom back in the day )
The reverse-woobifying thing is definitely something I’ve encountered multiple times & it annoys me too, just as much as woobifing itself does. It seems in general tumblr has an issue with moderation because I guess people hate dimension & also like. Your villain doesn’t need the Most Tragic of backstories to be a good one. I personally believe ALL villains have a reason to be what they are but they don’t have to be particularly traumatic like some people seem to think. Nuance is nice. Its good to have some villains that are relatable but not because their stories are overwhelmingly sad. Because the thing is... Pain & suffering doesnt come in one shade & what someone else might overcome another person might not & so on . .. Plus its also good to have villains who just arent really sympathetic at all. But like like... as a whole tumblrs not as big into diversity as it always claims in ANY way.
I DIGRESS tho. In particular I’ve found characters who are either explicitly LGBT confirmed or HUGELY LGBT coded are a huuuge target for the reverse-woobie & thats a.... massive problem which was largely why I was being feral in my tags gjkdkgkkdg.
The fact that still the only characters who are LGBT & particularly dimensional that we get are typically villains is a problem to start with but thats another topic. Its fine to love & support lgbt villains but... Definitely something wrong with the reverse-woobie being so predominate when it comes to them. The reverse-woobie in this instance is so replusive for me bc it enforces the idea that LGBT people are not sympathetic or relatable & when they ARE then its ok to pretend theyre not LGBT & effectively erase that part of them. Like I have had people in another fandom explain to me that their reason for erasing a characters sexuality as gay was because they found him to be relatable & sympathetic to them & they were not gay so they preferred to see him as bi or het more like themselves all the while trying to claim hetero or biphobia if you attempted to explain how wrong & inherently homophobic that is. ( lol @ “”Heterophobia”” in general tho )
This character was also a HUGE target for reverse woobifying from the fandom despite the fact he was the FURTHEST thing from a candidate for that imaginable. He was in fact canonly more an anti-hero than an outright villain. The fandom also liked to ‘harass’ people who they deemed were ‘woobifying’ him which essentially related to like... Liking the character & defending him from droves of homophobes in any way. Which was major awkward because theyd throw explicit tantrums about people calling him a “gay icon” in any way but weirdly enough this “anti-woobie” thing with him ONLY came into existence when he was confirmed gay. Prior all the straight fangirls making him their extra deluxe perfect lover boy husbando for their reader x him fanfics were never bothered about ‘woobifying’ in any way.
Dont get me wrong I think some people have genuine good intentions in mind for the reverse -woobie in fandom in regard to this, an idea of pointing out that lgbt ppl are capable of being horrendously evil too ect, which is fine & all but it’ll always leave a bad taste in my mouth if the villain in question is literally a canonically tragic one. Especially when the justification is playing on tropes particularly used to demonise lgbt people. Like I mentioned as an example for Sasori treating him as an entirely emotionless monster while simultaneously empathises hes a-spec or whatever given emotionless / unfeeling / inhuman ect are huge tropes used against a-spec people to dehumanise & demonise us.
Its every bit as awkward, & in fact I would argue far more awkward than people trying to woobify villains who lack “proper” motive. I wish people would be more careful about what characters they’re reverse-woobing n why.

How would Sasori feel if he had a student who he taught to use puppets and they became even better at it than him? Would it anger him since he wouldn't be the best puppet master anymore?
I actually think he would be super proud tbh ? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’ve said it before, Sasori’s a stoic so he doesn’t show his feelings on things a lot regardless to what they might be but I really don’t think its something that would upset him in any way. Sasori may be like “the best” & has held “the title” so to speak since he was like 8 which is crazy but you’ll notice despite his overwhelming skill Sasori’s insanely humble. He pretty much doesn’t boast about himself or his abilities at all. Which is something to really take note of given just how strong he actually is. Usually people’s power & skills swell their heads in some way but it doesn’t seem to really be a thing with Sasori.
Yes hes confident, yes he knows hes good but truly Sasori’s not into puppets to be the best or even to be better than anyone. Sasori approaches puppetry with a lot of love & passion, he does it because he loves it & nothing else. To him I suppose it doesn’t matter how good he or anyone else is, its about the passion. If you have that it doesn’t matter your skill level in relation to his, he would still respect you. Sasori doesn’t think of himself as the best puppeteer either, he still looks up to his grandma & his idol is Chikamatsu Monzaemon & no matter how good he gets that never changes.
You’ll notice when Sasori talks to those “below” him he doesn’t discourage them, even when his job is to annihilate them. When Sasori fought Kankuro is a good example, he was very impressed by him despite his lower skill level. Everything Sasori did, he did as an educational demonstration, not truly to humiliate him despite the fact the reality was he had to eliminate him.
I don’t call their next confrontation a real battle which is a shame tbqh, a real rematch would have been sick but regardless Sasori respects Kankuro’s passion for puppets & goes ahead & entrusts his very first puppets to him, even asking him to pass them down to future generations.
I think theres a part of Sasori that would really enjoy mentoring someone, passing his knowledge down to others & helping them improve. If Sasori had a pupil & they were to surpass him he would feel good because that would mean he had given back the medium he loves & even added something more to it. I don’t know if Sasori himself realises how much he would enjoy that but there is a part of him thats still very nurturing & eager to share & be connected with others. He just doesn’t get to really do that, especially now that his preferred mode of puppetry is so dark & hes unfortunately pretty protective/defensive of it but if you can get past the smidgen of crazy Sasori would probably be a great & attentive mentor. a little tough on the outside but if you learnt from him you’d learn well just like he did & he’d be thoroughly invested.

⊰ “ You spend a LOT of time working on your puppets. Do you think it's ever wasted? ...You know, you could save some time by ignoring their aesthetic. I mean, they are war machines. They don't need to look pretty. ...Would you be willing to sell me one, Sasori? “ ⊱
❝ This may sound odd but you if you truly think of puppets as little more than war machines they will serve you ill. Puppets are far more complex than that. Their forms vary just as much as every gear, spring and wire that triggers every hidden mechanism. Every piece must flow together in unity to make a whole. In order to truly utilise a puppet you must understand what makes the doll so effective; A true puppet master appreciates the puppet inside and out. Simply put every one is an intricate work of art and it would far more of a waste not to recognise that. ❞
When he was small his granny Chiyo was the one who taught him the true complexity of a puppet, she told him THE BEST way to understand a puppet, to truly get the most out of the skill of puppeteering was to start by building your own. As soon as he had mastered the ability to manifest chakra threads she introduced him to the workshop. Back then he wasn’t even tall enough to reach most the items but she helped out by getting things down for him & helping him gather the equipment he thought he needed. He sat & toiled FOR HOURS, a familiar design fresh in his mind. This should have been how all puppeteers started. His was knowledge passed down for generations from the worlds greatest masters.
❝ Time to me is no object when creating a puppet. Everything must be perfect; its an art you just cant rush less you wind up with a faulty, messy heap of junk. ❞ after all, this was why puppeteers were a rare breed, very few were cut out for the patience, love & dedication their art required. You either had it or you didn’t, there was no in between & no point in trying to make mediocrity work.
❝ I’m no longer in the habit of selling off my own personal collection. . . But . . . If you already have a puppet I could probably strengthen it for you. Otherwise I would suggest you try your hand at making one yourself. Then you might understand what I mean. The outer shell of a puppet is just as important as its inner workings; one cant exist without the other. If the shell isn’t up to scratch then the insides are made vulnerable or simply fall apart. ❞

Hidan : / / Satsvriku
the tear of fabric , familiar. the scrape of something — other , is not. the sound of flesh splitting open , an opponent reeling back to guard their wound in the body’s natural defense , the need to escape any source of pain , that doesn’t happen. it throws hidan’s rhythm off balance , turns what is normally a quick reaction time into a stutter. he feels metal scrape down his bare shoulder as he’s moving to sidestep. it doesn’t matter , though. the pain is easily ignored. magenta eyes slide down to the end of his weapon , definitely no blood. but it’s no time for confusion or questions , he’s started this , and now he would need to finish it.
red , black , and silver , the three bladed scythe spins in the jashinist’s well - practiced hands. another pass is made at sasori , a swing upwards , an attempt at a second attack. full strength as his previous had been , the falter in his step replaced once again by overabundant confidence in his own abilities. his god hadn’t failed him yet , his abilities have yet to let him down , why should he allow this incident to stop him ? perhaps it was just a bad hit , is all , some sort of armor worn beneath the clouded robes.
try again , try again , try again , hidan.
he can feel it , the itch of a kill in the pits of his stomach. he doesn’t want to disappoint jashin , can’t bring him any shame — eyes reflect the same feeling of insanity that grips his heart , propelling the zealot head first into his need to destroy the hunched over creature in front of him. so much so that a throaty growl escapes him , animalistic and without thought.
Knowing he has landed his venomous sting, it would be foolish to bother wasting any more time in doing FURTHER DAMAGE to Hidan’s reckless form. All Hiruko’s hidden weapons were costly, every time they were used they drained resources that would have to be replenished later & though he rarely ran out as he never prolonged a battle more than necessary, Hiruko could only carry so many projectiles before it would come down to the puppet’s signature tail & Sasori’s skill in manoeuvring it.
That said he wasn’t about to let his favourite puppet suffer anymore damage at the hands of this maniac either. Repairing puppets was also a drain on resources, not to mention time. Now hes resolved to blocking & avoiding HIDAN’S FRENZIED attacks, a task admittedly not as easy as he would have liked. He was wild, fast & sometimes difficult to predict, Sasori wasn’t even sure in this moment if Hidan’s attacks had any actual thought to them, it seemed rather they were pure animalistic instinct, a reflex born only out of a deep seeded desire to kill.
Hiruko’s tail moves quickly to match Hidan’s swings, METAL CLINKING violently against metal as the puppet is pushed backwards. For all Hidan’s ignorance Sasori had to admire this monstrous dedication to inflict damage, this beastly focus on drawing blood might have truly been something to fear had Hidan learnt to put a little more thought & focus toward his approach. That said, however, Sasori had the luxury of knowing his blood couldn’t be spilled, an ordinary opponent on the other hand might find Hidan a little more imposing.
But that was just Sasori’s point; if Hidan wanted to be a truly EFFECTIVE DISCIPLE of his Lord Jashin then he needed to be a more conscious shinobi. More refined.
Catching one small opening Hiruko’s tail lashes forward again to throw Hidan’s balance & turn the tides of the defensive. Surely it wouldn’t be long now before the poison began to do its job. In fact, any time now it was due to kick in particularly with Hidan’s savage, RAPID MOVEMENTS. That much blood pumping through his body would be distributing the poison expeditiously. ❝ Well ? ~ Are you starting to feel it yet ?! ❞ Hiruko snarls in question on behalf of the ever impatient Sasori.

Astrological profile ; Sasori
Scorpio Sun.
Scorpio is a complex sign with many dimensions of expression. This complexity is traditionally described by the three symbols which describe its expression – The Scorpion, The Eagle & The Phoenix. Each of these symbols describes something about what motivates the Scorpio individual, & so what their potential in life might be. When the Sun is found in Scorpio, there is a gift for penetrating to the core essence of reality, to see things & others as they truly are. This sign is also relates to the psychological motivations which underpin human behaviour. Through confrontation with their own & other people’s true nature, Scorpios tend to experience life lessons that acquaint them with the depth of what it means to be a human being.
Pisces Moon.
Whether you prefer to escape into a comfortable world of your own daydreams, or immerse yourself in art, anything that works to activate your imagination feels like coming home, & enables you to nurture your soul. This is a great advantage if you turn your talents to anything creative. Most often, the Piscean energy is expressed through abstract art forms, so anything around music, film, photography, dance, drama, poetry or painting may appeal. Even if you do not practice as an artist, you are likely to be strongly in tune with certain art-forms.
Aquarius rising.
This is the sign associated with intellectual genius & sudden realizations. Accordingly, you may suffer at the hands of others because of your apparent eccentricities or unorthodoxies. You may have played the role of the outsider or someone different from an early age, used to following the beat of your own drum. In some ways, this fits with your belief that you do not really fit anyway, & so allows you to continue being the rebel, renegade or outcast, ready to bring about the unorthodox & the new.

Deidara : / / Explosionrelease
impractical ? deidara turns , taking the offered tie in hand. his long hair is no more impractical than sasori maintaining his weakest spot dead center of his chest. though he’s sure sasori’s tired of hearing him pick on him about it. the pair is a stubborn one , both stuck in their ways and mindsets ( after all , each line of thinking has brought them this far in life unscathed , who could blame them ? ).
❝ hardly. it’s never been an issue , ❞ a small laugh then , ❝ outside of the upkeep , yeah. which — i don’t really mind. it’s more relaxing than anything , especially when i’ve got you to do it for me sometimes. ❞ deidara moves a bit further away then , as to not accidentally hit the other while styling his hair. thin fingers split the body of it into two , the upper portion tied up in quick well - practiced movements with his red band. the artist isn’t sure when he started tying his hair like this , it wasn’t as if anyone had shown him the best ways to tame the thick mane of his. it wasn’t as if anyone in iwagakure would do something so out of the norm to stand out and draw his eye. now though , all that matters is that he liked the attention it drew then , and he continues to enjoy it now.
Of course everything about Deidara was, to Sasori, a little bit impractical. That was just WHO DEIDARA was. Impractical, impulsive, showy. The two of them in their ways were as different as night & day, polar opposites, earth & air just like their artistic visions, but that didn’t mean they had to opposed to one another ━ at least not all the time. There was in fact an expression claiming opposites attracted & maybe in a small way it was true. In some ways it could be said the two of them WERE COMPLIMENTARY to each other, one capable of levelling out the flaws of the other often enough to keep things moving along.
❝ Oh ? ❞ he merely observes as Deidara finishes off the job, tying his tresses up with speed & agility that came with years of practice, an area in which this time around the bomber actually had experience that far exceeded his own, which made a lot of sense given he had said he had kept his hair this way since he was small. Theres the district trace of a smile gracing his DELICATE FEATURES as he continues on.
❝ Then I guess that makes this our thing. ❞ after all certainly he had made it clear this wasn’t something he minded. It was relaxing, calming, this was the kind of thing he enjoyed doing since he was very young himself. He maintained his puppets the same way, groomed them & ensured they were at their best. Deidara needn’t be ANY DIFFERENT.

I did not like to be touched, but it was a strange dislike. I did not like to be touched because I craved it too much. I wanted to be held very tight so I would not break.

Deidara : / / Explosionrelease
there isn’t much of a reaction from deidara , words spoken to him going unregistered for the moment. he’s far too curious now , seconds away from asking if he could get an even closer look. yet fully aware that he’s — more than likely , the only person who’s even seen sasori’s real form in the akatsuki , let alone be allowed to know the truth of his puppet body. so he abstains , for now. blue eyes finally break from the container as the cloak is thrown over his shoulder , masking it from his view again.
❝ it seems like a big bulls eye right in the middle of your chest. you considered… making it more discreet ? or is it the thrill of them knowing that that’s your off switch ? ❞ as he speaks , deidara pulls his half shirt over his head , followed by the mesh undershirt. otherwise smooth skin highlights the grotesqueness of his fourth mouth. thick stitches hold the lips together , to prevent it from being a nuisance. or detonating before he’s ready to. the surrounding seal equally necessary. it prevented the jutsu from siphoning chakra while not being used. there certainly is a reason this jutsu is forbidden now.
perhaps this is good for the two partners ; revealing their ace cards , letting the other know their full capabilities. deidara looks to the mouth , grazing a finger over one of the stitches. movement , lips attempting to stretch open , as if reacting on some sort of instinct. there’s a pain to the mouth’s struggle of course , it’s his own skin after all ; attached to his heart , his chakra network , but it’s nothing he isn’t already used to. the blonde looks to sasori then , raising a brow in invitation. ❝ your curiosity satisfied , yeah ? ❞
Trust Deidara to make a smart arsed comment like that. He should have seen that jab coming from a mile away. Fortunately Sasori’s in too good of a mood to be bothered just now so he brushes it off. ❝ If their powers of deduction are that keen then there isn’t much I can do, they still have to hit me right in that precise spot and with enough force to break the outer seal. ❞ certainly his immortality had a risk factor but so far he was confident it wasn’t going to pose too much of an issue, after all it was just like he said, even if someone were to see it & figure out what it was they still had to hit it exactly.
The mouth on Deidara’s chest is quick TO DIVERT all of his attention however & he leans in slightly for closer examination, head tilting to the side. Hes making a mental note of the entire morbid sight from the thick, garish stitches holding its uncanny lips together tightly, to the unique inscribing that seals it. ❝ How fascinating.❞ he means that of course with true interest & sincerity, though Deidara’s art wasn’t his ideal it was also true that he had never met another who shared his artistic passion. A heart like his own was surely RARE INDEED.
Returning to an upright stance another small huff of amusement escapes him as he begins to clip up his cloak, once more concealing his masterful body from view. ❝ You’re making jabs at my core but wouldn’t you call your situation tedious. You have to pluck out stitches and release that seal before you can even hope to use it.❞ he points out, returning the favour of Deidara’s earlier criticism. ❝ I’d dare say we’re both a little imperfect, wouldn’t you ? ❞

Extra side hcs about Sasori & his puppets:
Hiruko was a fairly early model therefore he does not possess any powerful abilities, jutsu, or kekkei genkai that he may have had in life. He was created after the human body was dead.
Due to the amount of alterations & adjustments Sasori has made to him over the years he’s almost unrecognisable to his human self. Sasori can control Hiruko from inside & out. Hiruko is as detailed before Sasori’s favourite puppet none the less, followed closely by the third Kazekage.
Sasori began to learn that he could harness ninjas unique abilities through human puppetry, he discovered the efficiency of this is related to how fresh the corpse is. Sasori had taken multiple bodies to “experiment” on them to this ends.
As a result Sasori’s most refined & dangerous human puppets are typically created from still living bodies. By starting the process without delay he is able to ensure freshness & thus more easily access unique jutsu & kekkei genkai.
His poisons are important to this process given they paralyse & incapacitate the “specimens” so Sasori can get to work before they die. Everyone dies during the process of course but Sasori wastes no time in waiting for that to happen.
Sasori being able to fight his new target first is always a good thing since he is able to get a feel for & understanding of their jutsu / kekkei genkai to be able to utilise them later. This is very important as Sasori must know what they’re capable of in order to harness it or even to want to make a human puppet in the first place.
This gives Sasori a chance to plan how he will build the puppet & what mechanisms he will have to use to transfer chakra to its desired places for maximum efficiency. For example the third kazekage has an important magnetic mechanism in the side of his chest that stores & amplifies his iron sand.
Sasori was suppose to inherent the Chikamatsu’s ten puppet collection when the time came & this is actually something Sasori truly looked forward to. He was absolutely thrilled by his grandmas puppets as a child & had a life-long & deep appreciation for Chikamatsu’s work. Sasori does regret never being able to own them as it was again something he aspired for as a child.
Sasori never wanted to be Kazekage or looked up to that role in particular. He instead looked up to his grandma & other amazing puppeteers of the past, & wanted to be like them. An artist remembered for all time due to his skill & passion.
The inspiration for Sasori’s collection indeed came from Chikamatsu’s esteemed collection. Sasori was always very interested in the idea of building his own collection of powerful, renowned puppets like Chikamatsu before him.
What put Sasori on another level from ordinary puppeteers was that not only was Sasori insanely skilled in his controlling of puppets but he was practically unrivalled when it came to creating them. Sasori’s puppets came to such fame particularly during the war they were considered a puppet master’s necessity, the highest quality of puppet you could have. Sasori was quite famous in & out of Suna because of this. He was particularly talked about due to his very young age, only 10 years old when he reached world wide regard for his puppets.
Sasori’s father was a puppeteer so Chiyo wasn’t the first person who introduced Sasori to puppets. Sasori has fond memories of his fathers puppet & being fascinated with it as a little tot. ( though he wasnt really allowed to play with it given it was a weapon & not a toy as baby Sasori originally saw it as )
He had also asked his father to teach him how to use puppets & his father agreed, however he died before this could happen leaving it to Chiyo to eventually teach him & she taught him like no one before.
Among Sasori’s silly self indulgent desires that could never be fulfilled beside his parents revival it would be to have his father’s puppet returned to him. He would have loved to be able to restore & refurbish it but sadly it was lost as his father was. Beside that he also would have loved to face off against Chikamatsu himself in a friendly battle of skill.

Given the massive role Komushi ( his death ) played in shaping Sasori, arguably the reason Sasori began & became obsessed with human puppets as opposed to the prosthetics he had started with, it’s wild the sheer lack of him in the fandom related to Sasori
But anyway points I don’ t think I’ve gone over enough in my hc about Sasori & his pre-Akatsuki relationships.
Komushi was the first person Sasori tried to “ repair ” by bonding his medical knowledge with puppetry. At the time this was unheard of & it was something Sasori had been spending a lot of his free time working on. When Komushi lost his arm Sasori saw the perfect opportunity to take his studies for a test run. This wasn’t approved by the council but Komushi was naturally extremely supportive of it & Sasori simply couldn’t see anything wrong with trying as it would ultimately help Komushi who had lost his arm. They did this together & Chiyo was shocked by it because, yes, it had worked. The only problem was Sasori didn’t have approval to do it. He did it without permission, on his own, in his workshop with the only other person approving of it beside himself being Komushi which neither of them had the authority to decide.
Keep in mind please that Komushi & Sasori were both literal children. At this time Sasori was AT MOST 13 years old & Komushi the same. The dangers of Komushi having a prosthetic arm filled with poison missed them both which what lead to the extreme tragedy. Though Sasori was incredibly intelligent & far-seeing he over looked Komushi’s clumsy nature in the hopes of helping him improve as a shinobi with a powerful prosthetic arm. This was one of those moments where sentiment overshadowed logic.
Initially however this was a great success. Chiyo was impressed & so was Komushi’s mother who was over-joyed that Sasori had saved Komushi from a difficult life of trying to adapt with a missing limb.
Had Koumshi had lived longer all four of them planned to take this to the council so these powerful prosthetic limbs could become a regular part of Suna’s medical & military arsenal. Koumshi however accidentally poisoned himself with the arm setting off a perfect storm of events that lead to Sasori becoming obsessed with human puppets.
This is also another layer of the disconnect that built up between him & Chiyo & Sasori’s uncertainty to her feelings toward him. In a way, you see, Chiyo, as a member of the council had to shall we say investigate Sasori. Not only that but as a human being when something happens & you cant fix it you naturally look for answers & ask questions & even look for some place to throw blame so on top of this again I’m sure there was an expression of disappointment upon Komushi’s death given Sasori wasn’t there & he may have been the only one who stood a chance of saving him.
Although the reality of this is slim. Even if Sasori had been there Sasori has explained himself the antidote was extremely complex & even he had difficulties with it. Also take into account that when Kankuro was poisoned it was a minor scratch & caused days of suffering, Komushi surely directly ingested much more than a drop worth. In fact it seemed to have been enough to erode his skin & from what we understand Komushi died after maybe only an hour or so. It wasn’t long enough for Sasori to even arrive. By the time Sasori got the Komushi was dead.
ANOTHER important thing to note was that with his dying breaths Komushi begged Chiyo not to let Sasori be blamed for what happened. I think obviously these last wishes went unfulfilled because of course Sasori came under investigation.
This was terribly worsened by the fact Sasori had taken his body & made him into a puppet. I wouldn’t say this was in any way “planned” & thats why we have the gut wrenching scene of Komushi’s mother’s anguished screams, her clinging to Sasori & begging that he fix Komsushi, that if he could fix his arm then surely he could fix his body too.
This caused a bunch of outstanding issues. One was a final break in Sasori’s sanity, a final solidification of Sasori’s disillusion with the worth of human life & its fragility, strongly followed by contempt for his village & their practises & another being Sasori’s research beginning to focus on human puppets as a result. At some point here Sasori realised how much potential human puppetry had, the kind of things he could harness & unlock with it. He was driven to learn more.
In the meantime the council wanted to hold Sasori entirely accountable for Koumshi’s death & further punished for the abomination of coveting his body into that of a puppet. Chiyo was the main force behind stopping this. As a member & as someone present for these events Chiyo was able to stand in Sasori’s favour. This was however kept pretty hush-hush, as was the entire incident outside of the council & the Kazekage. Sasori didn’t even know how hard Chiyo went to prevent a punishment from befalling him. Chiyo’s relationship with Komushi’s mother was also severely damaged as a result such she had to stand against her to protect Sasori.
Most of what Sasori knew however was that the higher ups of his village had the audacity to be pretty pissed off with him & to think he was worthy of blame. He was also under the impression Chiyo felt similarly based on the rift that had already formed between them & the fact Chiyo took it upon herself to investigate him.
Sometime in all this nonsense Chiyo put herself to work & began developing a Jutsu that would allow one to transfer their own life into that of a puppet. Later she told Sasori she created this jutsu for him which Sasori was naturally shocked by. I always found this interesting because at the time naturally one would assume that what Chiyo meant by this was that she wanted to give life to Sasori’s parent puppets however this was always odd because there was two of them & one of her & I always wondered how that would have worked.
However now I really don’t think that Chiyo developed this jutsu with “reanimating” Sasori’s parents in mind. Only one puppet can be brought to life with one life. I think the reason Chiyo made this was for Komushi. Reasoning that if she brought back Komushi all this would end. However these events progressed far too fast & a complete lack of communication & understanding on all ends only made things so much worse therefore Chiyo could not save Komushi or Sasori.
Sasori’s need to continue researching human puppets put him constantly in an awkward position as the council um’ed & er’ed about whether it was allowable. It teetered with no official stance other than “we dont like this” due to the fact this was a time of war & was pushing Suna to its limits & though this was gruesome & inhumane they also had to take into account the advantage of human puppets & Sasori’s research as a whole.
However Sasori was in hot water again with Hiruko’s death. I detailed before that Hiruko was not a native sand shinobi, he was from a neighbouring allied village who was wounded on the battlefield & brought to Suna, the nearest & most equipped village to treat him. The problem was however that Hiurko mysteriously died & when he did Sasori was fast to claim his body for research materials.
This lead to the belief that Sasori had killed him to supply himself with a new test subject perse & the fact is this time its actually true. Sasori was tasked with helping Hiurko get back to health as he was part of Suna’s medical team along with Chiyo ( Side headcanon that pretty much all Suna’s puppet ninjas doubled as med nins. Reason being puppeteers & med ninjs functioned similar on the battle field so it made sense to combine them & Chiyo had used her medical skill to introduce poisons to puppets ages prior. ) however the damage done to Sasori & his regard for human lives was piratically irreparable at this point. Sasori’s obsession had set in & he could never go back to being a medical ninja again. He could not go back to ‘saving lives’ when he had an overwhelming sense of that being pointless. Hiruko died because Sasori wouldn’t put in effort to save anyone knowing that everyone dies sooner or later despite his best efforts.
So he figured Hiruko could battle forever as a human puppet. A needed resource. This time though the council couldn't ignore it or excuse it. They believed Sasori had truly taken a life to supplement his research & they feared he would begin doing this with innocent Sunagakure citizens & the risk was too high, particularly as Sasori’s behaviour had become too strange to ignore. He had already became unruly & defiant & completely focused on his puppets. This time Chiyo had to side with the council & the Kazekage against Sasori. Thats when Sasori left.
IN GENERAL, the point I’m trying to make here was that Koumshi is SO MUCH more important to Sasori’s story then I’ve ever seen him given credit for. I also wanted to confront the “impression” that Koumshi’s death was a planned act on Sasori’s behalf bc being real when I watched that ep when it first came out I was a bit confused as to how to interpret events as well. It does seem to heavily suggest this was a purposeful act & I might have thought that too if I only had that episode of Sasori’s history alone to go with. However when I blend it to the other things we know about Sasori I think rather the suggestion of it being planned was suppose to indicate that this is how everyone else interpreted Sasori’s actions. Add that with all Chiyo’s guilt about everything being her fault & their initial interactions leading to Sasori’s death, with Sasoris absolute hatred toward his village.
Sasori was a stoic of an extreme degree. Chiyo even explained to Sakura when she criticised him that none of this was his fault, that all the fault lied with her & the sand village. She then later went on to confirm that perhaps Sasori wasnt entirely the emotionless monster he allowed & helped himself to be portrayed as. He allowed himself to take the last hit that saved them both.

⊰ “ Does Sasori have any opinion on drunk people or people who tend to get drunk often or being drunk himself? (Like, what if Deidara showed up one day clearly drunk, but trying to hide it from Sasori?) ” .⊱
I wouldn’t say he has a super strong opinion either way on people being drunk, thats their business & he’ll leave them to it but if he had to feel something about it in particular, from the standpoint of a shinobi he would think of it as a stupid thing to do. Dulling one’s senses & deadening their minds with alcohol or any substance isn’t exactly ideal given their line of work & is kind of asking for trouble in the right circumstances, HOWEVER, that being said, Sasori also knows what its like to want to numb pain & that the effect of alcohol really varies from person to person. Some people handle their drink better than others & there is definitely safe ways to consume alcohol all of which Sasori would know of. Overall he wouldn’t think of it has his business pretty much. In general as long as you don’t bother Sasori, Sasori doesn’t bother you typically so how Sasori reacts to someone being drunk would be all in relation to their behaviour toward him.
I’ll go ahead & say for the sasodei Sasori would probably know how to look after a drunk given hes got extensive medical know-how so if Deidara got fucked up, no worries, Sasori would know what to do with him to help him get sober & well again & I actually think getting Deidara sober asap would be a big interest of his because Sasori’s always fussing over Deidara in some way because hes so.... Deidara. Sasori’s forever thinking hes going to do something & get himself killed so he tries to prevent that in small ways like giving him a verbal about learning to be more prepared or reminding him of certain things. He wouldn’t push the issue, just do small ‘helpful’ things. Like keeping him on his side so if he throws up he cant choke on it or anythin’. ( as well as just generally being able to tell if he was actually at risk of anything adverse in the first place. )
As for himself its not his thing. Sasori’s never actually drank. When he was human & able to do such things he was very underage so even if he was interested he was still a minor & no one was really readily trying to serve him a drink. Even if they did he would more than likely turn it down anyway because Sasori, as a character, is very. . . Shall we say uptight. He was raised & trained to always be alert & on his guard. Like his grandma, Sasori’s pretty strict & proper most of the time, he takes after her a lot actually. He does not like to do things to lower that guard in any way, its against his code of practise, its against whats proper for a shinobi. . . He ultimately doesn’t feel comfortable or as if hes preforming correctly in any state of vulnerability. He allows for such things occasionally & only around certain people but getting drunk would not be something he’d feel compelled to do even if he was alone, y’feel ? Just not really Sasori interest & in any case nowadays Sasori literally cannot get drunk so its not something he’ll spend time contemplating.

Tobi : / / Bonetaker
“I could find him.” Tobi asserts, like dangling a line out in front of a fish, letting just teasing the edge of the bait, the taste of things to come. He wondered if Sasori would even be around in time for the reveal to actually take place. “I can find anyone!” He continues to push forth, despite the oh so gentle let downs that the puppet master sat forth in their conversation, ‘Tobi’ continued to play this little game of vagueness and half truths. That was just how he navigated with the half of the Akatsuki who were completely and utterly unaware of the reality that surrounded the masked man.
“Come on, don’t you wanna go on at least one mission with me? Give me a chance, just one chance!” The masked man charge’s through the puppet, phasing through him as though he weren’t even there so that he may face Sasori once again, his palms still pressed tightly together, practically on bent knees. “I don’t even have to talk, I’ll behave. I just wanna join your team.”
Despite possessing the hypothetically unfeeling body of a doll, Sasori still thought he had some kind of headache coming on as the MASKED MAN blathers away. It was surely worse than Deidara on his most inane of tirades in regard to the superior beauty of transiency in his explosions, at least in a way he could understand the passion behind that. With Tobi it was simply babbling & nagging.
Before the large puppet could begin to turn itself back to him, perhaps in the hopes of forcefully shutting him up, Sasori found himself surprised at WHAT HAPPENED next; Tobi phasing right through him to appear in front of him once more leaving him to wonder what had just happened, his confusion uttered under his breath. ❝ What the hell?! ❞ not for the life of him could he decide on what Tobi had just done ━ he either had incredible speed or it was some kind of illusion but Sasori saw no signs of genjutsu. Curiously, he swiftly swings HIURKO’S POWERFUL steel tail at the other, the puppet hissing as he does ❝ Just shut up already. ❞
He needed to see what would happen when the tail made contact, just so he could truly observe for himself what was going on in its entirety. It brought him back to his original suspicion about the story behind this man “ Tobi.”
