this isn’t to dig on ur anti zutara post but rather start a discussion.

in my experience, the reason we zutarians don’t like zukka is because of the animosity we get from the fandom. we analyze the subtle details we are given because practically every zuko and Katara interaction in the show is because all of them save the first have some degree of zutara in it. their chemistry- be it platonic or romantic- is undeniable.

and yet, we are told by zukkas and kataangers that we are wrong for shipping the ship. a lot of zukkas sideline the women in atla- sokka is given a lot of Katara’s qualities that are stated in the show (ie: people claiming that sokka is the team dad when he literally confessed that he saw Katara more as his mother than his actual mother), mailee is just there (majority of the mailee fics on ao3 are just them being a side couple in zukka fics), and not to mention comradekatara’s posts from back when they were lesbians4sokka about Katara being homophobic. even if it was a joke, it was something that people took seriously. a lot of the same zukkas are the ones making fun of katara for talking about her mother’s death when that literally happened three times outside of the southern raiders episode.

dont get me wrong, I know that the zutara fandom was absolutely rabid in the early 2000s and that’s where we get our bad reputation, but the only time that we’ve had issues with other people in the atla fandom was when they interacted with our content and it blew up.

Honestly you make some points I agree and disagree with so I'll go one paragraph at a time

1.

I do agree that some zutirans get hate that isn't deserved. I definitely think that a lot of the fandom doesn't like zutartians, I'm part of that group as well (for the most part). I also do think they have chemistry, but more in a way that's more like family rather than lovers.

I think the over-analyzing is a bit too much, I'm overwhelmed every time I see a zutara post. Obviously, some analyzing is okay, I sometimes analyze ships, but I feel like zutartians do it sm that it feels kind of annoying?? Maybe that's just me, but I feel like you don't have to analyze things just to justify your ship. Just ship what you like

2.

I agree with the fact that zukka shippers tend to sideline women in fics. I've def read fics where katara is sort of villanized, and I definitely don't agree with that. A lot of the time, ppl prefer MLM ships to than WLW ship, (which if you ask me, is because ppl prefer male characters to female ones (*cough* misogyny *cough*)(though i dont think most of the misogyny is purposely done)) m 6

Idk if it's bc we're in different parts of the fandom, but I've never really seen ppl say that shipping zutara is wrong?? I've seen ppl say they don't like it, and why, but they always state that they don't care if people ship zutara and that they're only stating reasons they personally don't like it.

Perhaps it's because I tend to stay away from the more toxic part of the community because if I see smth I don't like I more often than not just scroll past. But I def believe that their are zukkas who are toxic, but I think some of that is just because ppl are toxic, no matter what fandom you're in.

I can't really speak on kataangers because while I do like the ship, I'm not really in that part of the fandom, so I'm not sure if ppl are unnecessarily mean to zutarians.

(Edit: nvm kataangers can be real assholes, I def believe that they're unnecessarily mean to ppl who dont ship kataang 😒😒)

As for the zutara Fandom in the early 2000s I can't really speak on that bc I didnt watch atla until I wanna say 2017 or 2018. So I don't really know what the fandom was like.

my point stills stands, after reading the new chapters my most toxic trait is the fact that I would’ve forgiven both Yeri and Yunjin 😞. BUT I NEED PEOPLE TO HEAR ME OUT (I’m constantly a villain apologist) Like yk, what they did was beyond fucked up BUT, Yeri was not lying when she said she had no choice, and for some reason I felt like the whole exposing thing for her was too extreme 😞, ik bada was probably fuming but something in me says she didn’t deserve that, LIKE I FELT HER ANXIETY THROUGH THE SCREEN, I don’t think that everyone hating her will compensate for what she did, it’s just like revenge but in a cruel kinda way. Pookie didn’t deserve 😞 and also she was not really the only culprit, people actually confessed things, she just posted them by their request.

Now, with yunjin is diff because miss girl is actually very guilty and so very sick in the head. But hear me out, when she said that she constantly felt like she was Nari’s shadow, and mentioned her mom, somehow most of her attitudes make sense. Wanting validation can fuck your head so much it’s surreal, and I think that deeply she acc feels remorse by it, but she was fueled with jealousy and desperation. I think that what broke my heart the most was when she was left all alone 😞. Somehow I feel like her character is complex and at that precise moment she also needed some type of reassurance from friends to understand that what she did was terrible albeit the reasons. I feel bad for her because, imagine always feeling like someone’s shadow, and in the end, everyone you love ends up taking their side and leaving you, further pressing that feeling that in the end you will always be her shadow, and people would prefer her over you. And I know in this case Nari’s feelings al probably all over the place due to the betrayal, but imagine how yun feels too 😞.

In conclusion, I support their rights and wrongs, waiting for their redemption arc so I can be an apologist outside the trenches. (sorry for the rant but I just love character dynamics so much 😞 and specially this one for me has so many layers)

And one of the biggest problems is that I'm personally not even bothered by it anymore, I got called a dog eater. Then when I was carpooling they told be not to drive because I was Asian so I'd crash the car. The worst thing is that the person who said that was also a person in a minority group. And when I pointed it out they said "I'm __ (Not gonna say their race), I can't be racist!" And I feel bad for pointing it out now, since it felt like I was offending them and other people of their race.

It’s rly sad but I think it’s so normalised bc in influential classic US American movies Asian characters would only exist to be a joke :/ looking back at movies like ‘Pretty in Pink’ I wonder to myself if movies like that popularised making fun of Asians. I have met a lot of ppl who make fun of Asians and then say they’re not racist bc they don’t hate Asians - do ppl rly not understand or see that it’s immoral and discriminatory to make fun of a whole race or specific ethnicities? Is it bc they’ve been taught since they were kids that it’s okey to do it ?since that’s what happens in famous movies? Just bc u don’t “hate” a race doesn’t mean ur not racist! Come to think abt it, Asians rarely get casted as main characters in the west. I think ‘Crazy rich Asians’, ‘To all the boys I’ve loved before’ and recently ‘Senior year’ are the only movies I’ve seen w Asians as main characters or other characters that get a lot of screen time. I remember I once called my best friend cute like a puppy and this guy said smth like “the only difference is that she eats it” and it took me a few seconds to understand what he actually meant and I was so shocked bc he’s a gen z and also goes to a prestigious school on an international program w ppl from everywhere! honestly I didn’t know that bad driver was an Asian stereotype b4 but how rude! Anyone can be a racist! If someone’s racist against ur race doesn’t mean u can’t be racist against x race. Honestly racism or xenophobia is not uncommon in minorities bc it’s a traumatic defence reaction towards discrimination and dehumanisation (to put someone below u in the racial or ethnic hierarchy after trauma caused bc of ur race or ethnicity so ur not the lowest rank). Like a lot of ppl of my ethnicity r rly xenophobic bc we have been colonized and ethnically cleansed by multiple countries not that long ago. It doesn’t justify racism or xenophobia, however!

Also I wanna say that it’s always ok to criticise anyone for racism, xenophobia or any other type of discrimination no matter what their background is!

A year ago I was speaking my language w my friend and this neo nazi classmate asked me “are you guys speaking *language of ppl that ethnically cleansed my ppl*?” KNOWING our ethnicity! I put him in his place bc I was so fkn done w ppl joking abt ppl ethnically cleansing my ppl literally in the 2000’s. Yesterday two guys (of different minorities) at the library were speculating my ethnicity (and got it right) and then went on to stereotype women from my country (thinking I didn’t hear them since I had AirPods on) and I told them off when they were gonna leave. and I just have to say it’s never wrong to point out racism or xenophobia ever!

I’m sry if this rant abt my experience in any way minimised ur experience I just wanted to talk abt that u should always confront and tell ppl off when they are being racist or xenophobic, no matter who they are

Thanks  anon  I’m  glad  you  agree  its  always  nice  to  open  the  IB  to  an  anon  whos  not  tying  to  have  beef  KGKDKGJdG.  I  mean  yeah  Sasori’s  totally  a  stoic  but  the  thing  is  thats  all  he  is.  Its  a  facade.  A  very  good  one  which  was  ingrained  into  him  by  the  teachings  of  his  village  &  his  own  pain  but  its  just  an  ‘act’  so  to  speak. 

 Sasori  is  VERY  capable  of  emotion  &  very  much  experiences  emotion. He  may  not  express  it  openly  or  even  deny  it  but  its  absolutely  a  thing.   He  is  not  emotionless.  He  is  not  unable  to  truly  feel. ( Hes  not  even  unable  to  form  connections  with  others.  Sasori’s  loneliness  up  to  a  point  was  NOT  his  own  doing.  Its  made  clear  Sasori  wasn’t  a  ‘loner’  because  of  being  an  edgy  little  prick  or  anything  like  that.  He  was  a  loner  because  of  his  Prodigy  status  &  his  reputation.  He  was  not  even  ten  years  old  &  he  was  already  renowned &  infamous  throughout  the  war,  they  were  calling  him  Sasori  of  the  red  sand.  Suna’s  enemies  out  of  fear  &  suna  itself  out  of  lionising  his  proficiency  as  their  solider &  weapon.  It  was  claimed  he  soaked  the  desert  sands  red  in  blood  hence  the  moniker.  Its  not  that  he  wanted  that.  He  just  did  what  he  was  trained  to  do.  Its  not  that  he  wanted  to  be  alone.  His  loneliness  &  desire  for  human  affection  is....  a  big  part  of  him.  )   Its  really  sad  actually  because  Sasori  himself  doesn’t  seem  to  fully  understand  his  own  trauma (  I  dont  expect  him  to  of  course,  like. . .  theres  a  lot  )  &  not  only  that  but  it  was... Idealised  to  him.  

He  ‘feels  numb”.  Its  a  heavy  result  of  his  obvious  depression  which  started  when  he  was  only  5  &  lost  his  parents.  But  he  explains  it  as  being  like  a  puppet  &  embraces  it  as  such  because  not  only  is  Sasoris  literal  coping  method  puppets &  this  is  his  way  of  comforting  himself   but  this  “numbness”  was  taught  to  him  as  ideal  by  his  village.  So  instead  of  understanding  an  issue  he  can  work  on  &  improve  just  thinks  its  how  shinobi  are  suppose  to  be. 

THOUGH  AT  THE  SAME  TIME....  Sasori’s  incredibly  intelligent  ( Scarily  so,  hes  literally  a  high-level  genius )   &  I’m  pretty  sure  one  of  the  many   key  elements  of  his  story  was  his  own  realisation  that  his  villages  teachings  were  flawed  &  they  were  using  him  &  other  shihobi  as  mere  instruments  of  this  flawed  idea  which  was  wildly  inhumane &  unfair,  particularly  when  they  came  to  try  &  blame  him  for  the  death  of  his  only  friend  (  noted   as  the  only  person  who  treated  him  as  a  person )  when  he  was  actually  trying  to  help  said  friend.  Sasori  fashioned  himself  entirely  as  a  big  old  fuck  you  to  his  village  surrounded  by &  using   the  only  happy  place  he  knew.  The  only  things  he  found  reliable  &  safe.  Relating  humans &  puppets  became  so  easy  for  him,  idealising  puppets  in  place  of  people  was  second  nature  especially  due  to  his  village  treating  people  as  puppets.

That  said  Sasori  knows  what  hes  doing.  While  theres  a  break  in  reality  there  for  sure  Sasori  knows  the  whole  human  puppet  thing  is  morbid  per se.  He  knows  its  going  against  ‘morality’ &  ‘humanity’ &  all  that  kinda  thing  but  thats  one  of  the  appeals  of  it.  Hes  making  a  statement  in  that  way.  shinobi  dont  like  to  admit  it  but  Sasori  emphasises  that  theyre  all  just  puppets.  Toy  soldiers.  However  by  making  them  human  puppets  Sasori  in  a  way  thinks  hes  improved  them  as  well,  helped  them,  preserved  them,  because  now  they’re  eternal.  Like  this  is  definitely  not  a  one  dimensional  thing.  Its  extremely  compound.  

SO  YEAH!!  Big  time  agree  with  you  I  know  people  seem  to  take  pointing  out  the  tragic  nature  of  any  villain  is  woobifying  but...  Its  not.  Its  not  when  A)  its  canon  facts,  its  what  the  character  is  SUPPOSE  to  be  &  B)  pointing  out  these  facts  are  not  being  used  as  absolute  excuses  for  the  ‘bad  things’  the  character  has  done  /  is  doing  or  being  used  to  demonise  any  other  character  to  make  that  character  look  better. ( Huge  example  being  the  Loki  vs  Thor  situation  in  the  marvel  fandom  back  in  the  day )

The  reverse-woobifying  thing  is  definitely  something  I’ve  encountered  multiple  times  &  it  annoys  me  too,  just  as  much  as  woobifing  itself  does. It  seems  in  general  tumblr  has  an  issue  with  moderation  because  I  guess  people  hate  dimension &  also  like.  Your  villain  doesn’t  need  the  Most  Tragic  of  backstories  to  be  a  good  one.  I  personally  believe  ALL  villains  have  a  reason  to  be  what  they  are  but  they  don’t  have  to  be  particularly  traumatic  like  some  people  seem  to  think.  Nuance  is  nice.  Its  good  to  have  some  villains  that  are  relatable  but  not  because  their  stories  are  overwhelmingly  sad.  Because  the  thing  is...  Pain &  suffering  doesnt  come  in  one  shade &  what  someone  else  might  overcome  another  person  might  not  &  so  on . ..   Plus  its  also  good  to  have  villains  who  just  arent  really  sympathetic  at  all.   But  like  like...  as  a  whole  tumblrs  not  as  big  into  diversity  as  it  always  claims  in  ANY  way.   I  DIGRESS  tho.   In  particular  I’ve  found  characters  who  are  either  explicitly  LGBT  confirmed  or  HUGELY  LGBT  coded  are  a  huuuge  target  for  the  reverse-woobie  & thats  a....  massive  problem  which  was  largely  why  I  was  being  feral  in  my  tags  gjkdkgkkdg.

The  fact  that  still  the  only  characters  who  are  LGBT  &  particularly  dimensional  that  we  get  are  typically  villains  is  a  problem  to  start  with  but  thats  another  topic.  Its  fine  to  love  &  support  lgbt  villains  but... Definitely  something  wrong  with  the  reverse-woobie  being  so  predominate  when  it  comes  to  them.   The  reverse-woobie  in  this  instance  is  so  replusive  for  me  bc  it  enforces  the  idea  that  LGBT  people  are  not  sympathetic  or  relatable  &  when  they  ARE  then  its  ok  to  pretend  theyre  not  LGBT  &  effectively  erase  that  part  of  them.  Like  I  have  had  people  in  another  fandom  explain  to  me  that  their  reason  for  erasing  a characters  sexuality  as  gay  was  because  they  found  him  to  be  relatable  &  sympathetic  to  them  &  they  were  not  gay  so  they  preferred  to  see  him  as  bi  or  het  more  like  themselves  all  the  while  trying  to  claim  hetero  or  biphobia  if  you  attempted  to  explain  how  wrong  &  inherently  homophobic  that  is.   ( lol @ “”Heterophobia”” in general tho )  This  character  was  also  a  HUGE  target  for  reverse  woobifying  from  the  fandom  despite  the  fact  he  was  the  FURTHEST  thing  from  a  candidate  for  that  imaginable.  He  was  in  fact  canonly  more  an  anti-hero  than  an  outright  villain.  The  fandom  also  liked  to  ‘harass’  people  who  they  deemed  were  ‘woobifying’  him  which  essentially  related  to  like... Liking  the  character  &  defending  him  from  droves  of  homophobes  in  any  way.  Which  was  major  awkward  because  theyd  throw  explicit  tantrums  about  people  calling  him  a  “gay  icon”  in  any  way  but  weirdly  enough  this  “anti-woobie”  thing  with  him  ONLY  came  into  existence  when  he  was  confirmed  gay.  Prior  all  the  straight  fangirls  making  him  their  extra  deluxe  perfect  lover  boy  husbando  for  their  reader  x  him  fanfics  were  never  bothered  about  ‘woobifying’  in  any  way.

Dont  get  me  wrong  I  think  some  people  have  genuine  good  intentions  in  mind  for  the  reverse -woobie  in  fandom  in  regard  to  this,  an  idea  of  pointing  out  that  lgbt  ppl  are  capable  of  being  horrendously  evil  too  ect,  which  is  fine  &  all  but  it’ll  always  leave  a  bad  taste  in  my  mouth  if  the  villain  in  question  is  literally  a  canonically  tragic  one.   Especially  when  the  justification is  playing  on  tropes  particularly  used  to  demonise  lgbt  people.  Like  I  mentioned  as  an  example  for  Sasori  treating  him  as  an  entirely  emotionless  monster  while  simultaneously  empathises  hes  a-spec  or  whatever  given  emotionless /  unfeeling   /  inhuman   ect  are  huge  tropes  used  against  a-spec  people  to  dehumanise  &  demonise  us. 

Its  every  bit  as  awkward, & in  fact  I  would  argue  far  more  awkward  than  people  trying  to  woobify  villains  who  lack  “proper”  motive.  I  wish  people  would  be  more  careful  about  what  characters  they’re  reverse-woobing   n  why.

Things tend to get pretty messy with Beel around, with the trail of crumbs he always leaves in his wake, and how he manages to get every surface he touches sticky. But you must be a miracle worker...

You're like a living roomba, and his ravenous appetite is no match against your cleaning skills! You seem to predict when the food bits will fall, and it's thanks to you that he can eat without a care in the world!

It's actually kind of scary, though. He'll drop a bite of his sandwich and move down to retrieve it to eat, and... it's gone. Poof. Into the ether of the garbage can...

You can still rest once in a while though, you know? Beel offers to help you with the cleaning, and he's more than happy to let you climb up his shoulders to reach those high places. It makes him happy to know he can lend a hand.

"MC, I already cleaned over here so you don't have to do it. I cleaned there, too. That means you don't have anything else to do, so why don't you have a lunch break with me? It's not good to work so hard all the time."

Belphie's one for the more observant brothers, so your clean freak habits didn't go unnoticed. He didn't know if you were obsessed with cleaning, or if you genuinely enjoyed it, but at least you were doing it without a fuss?

And man did you do a good job. Everywhere you cleaned was left with the lingering smell of vanilla and lavender, and... you know, the smell is making him sleepy.

Every pillow his head touches seems especially fluffy, too! When he found out you made a regular habit of washing and fluffing them, and they smell amazing... He feels like he's laying on a cloud...

in this post, i will be analyzing the information we’ve been given about utahime so far to form a prediction about her future role in the jujutsu kaisen series. if you’re as interested in utahime’s character as i am, please feel free to keep reading :3 (i’ll also be talking about her relationship with gojo a bit too)

utahime iori is a semi-grade 1 sorcerer working as a student supervisor/teacher at kyoto jujutsu high school. she loves drinking beer and going to karaoke. she’s also close friends with shoko and she’s not particularly fond of gojo most of the time. what else do we know about her?

hates sweets (funny she’s the complete opposite of gojo)

she’s great at singing and it’s a huge part of her technique

squabbling with gojo became a reflex :3

let’s dive into her personality and abilities!

chapter 65

before i get into it, i think it’d be best if i were to explain the timeline because a lot of people seem to be confused about this one particular thing. utahime is born on february 18th, 1987. contrary to popular belief, she is not 3 years older than gojo. it is november 2018 in the story because gojo was sealed on halloween. if gojo was born on december 7th, 1989, that would mean that right now, he is only 28 years old. he has yet to turn 29.

the year is 2007. gojo satoru is a second year at tokyo jujutsu high school. the japanese school year begins in april which suggests that gojo is only 17 at the time (even if it’s not april, it doesn’t look like winter yet so it’s unlikely that he’s already 18). utahime is 20 because it is past february. she is a 2nd grade sorcerer at the age of 20. that’s not bad at all!

chapter 65 introduces young utahime and mei on a mission together within a cursed site. in real time, they’ve been gone for two days which is a cause of concern for gojo, shoko, and geto because the two haven’t contacted anyone since the beginning of their mission.  the two begin to suspect something is wrong because the hallway markers they’ve set in place disappeared, and no matter how far they travel within the halls, the end is nowhere in sight.  mei theorizes that the cursed spirit is overlapping the space as they travel forward.  utahime agrees with this speculation and proposes a plan to escape the cursed spirit’s grasp by moving erratically.  notice how she says that if one of them should escape, they can try to attack from the outside or call for help.  if utahime was not capable of inflicting damage on anything then she would have told mei to escape and attack if she can while she waited to be rescued.  however, she didn’t.  she included herself in the sentence which leads me to believe that she is capable of going on the offense if needed.  

keep in mind that at this point in time, mei is a grade 1 sorcerer.  she is knowledgeable about all things involving jujutsu because she is experienced and skillful.  we can see this aspect of her character illustrated when she theorizes that the cursed spirit is messing with the space they’re in.  she chooses to go with utahime’s plan because she agrees that it’s the best action moving forward.  this verifies that utahime is an intelligent girl that’s able to get along with pretty much anyone.  

her intellect is demonstrated once again in chapter 79.  she was able to deduce the possibility of there being more than one traitor and the fact that one is probably a higher up.  she also narrowed down the mechamaru as the mole of kyoto not because he was acting suspicious but by process of elimination.  she thought thoroughly of his technique and how easy it would be for him to manipulate devices small enough to be undetectable.  

sure you can argue that she should already know all her students’ abilities and whatnot but you have to admit that it’s hard trying to sniff out the traitor when no one is acting suspicious.  in addition to that, how did she know that there was a traitor in the top brass?  i would have never guessed that tbh LOL (maybe bc im an idiot).

okay, now that we have established that she’s intelligent, let’s answer a more important question.  is utahime weak?

chapter 33

if gojo calls utahime weak, does that mean there is some truth to it?  well it is true that she is weaker than him because he’s the strongest and all.  in my opinion, he’s just teasing her.  he probably found that calling her weak is what really riles her up.  maybe i’ll talk about why he loves teasing her so much in a later post.  but anyway, gojo calls everybody and their mom weak.  he even said jogo was weak and we know how powerful that guy is.  gojo’s words alone do not indicate much about utahime’s power.  in fact, i don’t even think he has seen her use her technique yet.  he’s probably only ever heard of how it works.  this is what i think their conversation about her technique was like:

gojo: hm?  ur cursed technique is singing?  can u show me?

utahime: what!  no way!  

gojo: why not?

*one of the classmates tells him that she can only use her CT once in a while because it consumes a lot of energy*

gojo: hahaha!  u have to conserve cursed energy to use ur CT?  why are u so weak, utahime?

utahime: i!  am!  your!  senpai!  respect!  me!

what i’m trying to say is that gojo loves poking fun of people.  we should not believe him when he calls someone weak because compared to him, everyone is weak.  

this is a little off topic but let’s examine him telling her, “and you don’t have the nerves, utahime.”  i think he’s trying to say that there’s no way she’ll ever do something like that because she’s not the type to put her students in danger.  remember the soft expression and relieved smile on her lips when she said that she was glad the students were safe after the kyoto incident?  gojo was directly in front of her so not only did he hear her say that, but he could have seen the look on her face too.  even if he told her that she didn’t have the guts to betray the school to get on her nerves, he knew that utahime simply cared too much about the students so he ruled her out as a suspect right away.  this is why he ultimately decided to confide in her and ask her to help him.  

i’m a person who loves over-analyzing things.  i really enjoy the dynamic between gojo and utahime.  they’ve known each other for more than 11 years and although they always bicker, there is an unspoken feeling of trust between the two.  gojo can do anything and everything by himself because he is truly the strongest person alive, but he still knows when to rely on others.  him deciding to entrust utahime with such a job implies that he believes in utahime’s abilities.

chapter 52

she’s not using any cursed energy here--not to our knowledge at least.  this is just pure skill.  she was able to swiftly evade the swing from haruta.  he was surprised himself considering the fact that he was right behind her.  how do we know her CT isn’t speed?  after haruta swung at her, we can see that some of her hair got cut off.  if she was using her CT then speed should be her specialty.  she should have been able to completely avoid the attack altogether but she didn’t.  of course this isn’t a wow moment because jujutsu sorcerers should know how to dodge attacks, however, i’m just trying to get the point across that she’s not a defenseless person without her technique or others.  let’s not forget that semi-grade 1 isn’t a weak rank either.  you can’t simply be recommended to be a grade 1 sorcerer if you only can support others.  

chapter 48

i want to bring up this panel. it suggests that utahime and takuma are sorcerers who have not experienced black flash and therefore, do not understand the essence of cursed energy as well as those who have like gojo and nanami.  i find it strange how takuma and utahime were used to represent sorcerers who haven’t experienced it yet.  is the purpose to demonstrate that there is a clear difference in skill between adult sorcerers like utahime and takuma compared to gojo and nanami?  i could be nitpicking but the order of todo’s statement doesn’t line up with the sorcerers being shown.  let me explain in depth.  todo starts off by saying, “for those who have experienced black flash as compared to those who have not...” wouldn’t it make more sense to show gojo and nanami on the right side to represent sorcerers who have experienced black flash?  that was mentioned first, after all.  gojo and nanami should appear when todo says “for those who have experience black flash” while utahime and takuma should be shown right after to personify the second part, “as compared to those who have not.”  i’m just making it more complicated than it actually is LOLOL i’m sure it really just means they haven’t experienced black flash yet, which is completely fine.  i also find it fascinating how they used utahime to contrast gojo.  with nanami and takuma it makes sense.  nanami is someone takuma looks up to, he wants to gain nanami’s approval before he deems himself worthy of a promotion. what about utahime and gojo?  what’s the purpose of comparing those two together when it’s obvious that gojo knows more about the essence of cursed energy more than anyone else?  i might be delusional whoops

kaz smiling wryly, realizing inej had been so focused on her reflection that he had surprised her. 

inej asking him if he knows how the mirror works

“what do you see?” he repeats. 

“mama. papa.” inej replies. “i am back with them, and i’m standing on grass.” she closes her eyes. “i can almost smell the green.”  

kaz knows exactly how the mirror of erised works and how personal someone’s desires are. 

he had only asked because of curiosity. 

no—hope. 

hope, a tiny sliver of it that took up a corner of his head and heart.

he knew how wants are dangerous, how they render someone vulnerable, weak. 

he would know. 

“i thought so.” he decides to lie. “i see..my brother, too. i think it’s a family mirror.” 

inej frowns. “but now i see you with me, as we are now.” 

kaz freezes. 

wonders if the mirror is broken. 

asks himself if he deserves even this, when he does not deserve anything as close to as good as this girl in front of him. 

years later, inej will find out what kind of mirror the erised is, and will laugh at kaz’s initial answer. 

“family mirror,” she’ll mock with a smile. 

but now, in the present, kaz cannot bear to tell her that he desires her the way she does him, cannot let himself ruin the one thing that matters most. he cannot bring himself to say the words, “i want, too. for you to stay beside me, as you are now, forever.” 

all he can do is move a little closer. 

let their shoulders brush. 

tell her, “i guess i was wrong.” 

inej cocking her head because kaz doesn’t say sentences like that.

“because now i see you, too.” 

2. helnik

matthias and nina stumble across the mirror of erised in the shrieking shack one day during a trip to hogsmeade. 

nina recognizes it immediately. she sees herself, with matthias. her friends join them, inej and jesper waving, wylan grinning by their side. even kaz. zoya, a proud look on her face, genya giving her a knowing wink. 

all the people she cared about. alive. safe. happy. 

eyes sparkling, she turns to ask matthias what he sees but the look on his face makes her swallow her words. 

matthias was dreaming. 

dreaming of her. 

he saw himself, with nina. 

but his dream—this time in fjerda, with his old friend trassel sitting by his side. 

clean shaven, wearing a durmstrang uniform in which he had learned dark magic, trained once to join the dark side. 

nina could half guess what matthias saw from the way his eyes went both sad and resentful at the same time. 

like he was nostalgic of a bad memory. 

and matthias knew she knew. 

there were times matthias’ heart was at war, knowing hogwarts was not exactly where he belonged. 

he would not go back to where he came from, believed with his whole heart it was wrong, but fjerda was still a place he had called home, where he had left his entire life behind. friends, family. 

all the people he had cared about. together. proud. unchanging. 

but nina—nina did not belong there, and he would die before he let her go through a fraction of what he had. he would no longer fight back against pure magic, what wizards were truly meant to do. 

matthias squared his shoulders. 

stared at his reflection head on. willed it to change. 

he had known before, but it was even clearer now. 

where nina didn’t belong, neither did he. 

nina was his new home. 

3. wesper

jesper had finally convinced wylan to skip potions with him and was stealing kisses in the hallways when they heard footsteps. 

“shit, shit!” jesper pulled away from a paling wylan, grabbing him and running in the opposite direction of professor mcgonagall’s voice. they ran down a long hallway before jesper pulled him into the first room he saw. 

wylan, breathless from both kisses and running

“i should never—” he gasped for air. 

“—have listened to you... damn your long legs.”

“saints,” jesper murmured from beside him, not out of breath one bit. “we’re in the room of requirement.” 

wylan spins, looking around the room they had stumbled into. 

jesper, speechless for once as he looked into the mirror of erised. 

he stood in his robes, but beside him was his mother, her face and age the same as the day she died. on his other side stood his father, wearing the proudest expression jesper had ever seen. 

a lump in his throat appearing at both the age difference between his smiling parents and at the sudden, invasive thoughts. 

had his father ever been that proud of him before? 

what had he even ever done that would make him that proud? 

what would his mother think of him now?

jesper always liked to think she watched him from above, but sometimes it was easy to forget. to give into temptation. 

“jes?”

wylan’s confusion at jesper’s serious face making jesper confused. 

“what do you see, wy?” 

wylan blinks. 

stares into the mirror.

“what do you mean, what do i see? it’s just a mirror.” 

and suddenly, the lump dissipates and jesper’s heart is just full, full, full.

full of the boy in front of him who wants nothing more than what he has now, which is to be with jesper in a place he calls home.

jesper squeezes wylan’s hand, 

tells him, “you’re right, i was just kidding.” 

looks back at his reflection, sees wylan with him now, his parents still staring back, proud. 

he makes a silent promise to do better, be better. 

he just had one more person he wanted to make proud now. 

tried writing these in regular fic format and just couldn’t do it. it was wordy, taking forever, and i didn’t love it. idk how satisfied i am with this but it took me a while so pls enjoy :) one of the things i dont think gets talked about enough is matthias’s character development and how complex of an internal conflict he has throughout the duology. helnik is one of the couples i’m lesser invested in out of the 3 but leigh bardugo put so much thought into him and his relationship with nina which i love.

Let's get into the real matter that I wanted to say to the fandom in general.

The prejudice we, Jumin Han fans have to face, is a LOT ! . I mean, I am not even exaggerating, it is a LOT , LOT 👁👄👁

I am tired of it seriously, and as a Jumin fan, I want to justify some things, the statements and judgy things that I have to see on a daily basis 🤐, so here it goes....

•"Jumin is a manipulative & an abusive person who doesn't even care about MC's well being, what a jerk! " ( just to be clear here, this was in my asks, which I don't want to post, she was a 'someone' fan, and started saying reasons why that someone is much better than my fav, I don't tolerate this attitude ) So, this person was okay with 'someone' who treated them like a pain in the ass for 'protecting' them, totally covered it up by saying he was just being a 'tsundere', and gave him a free pass because he had a 'tragic past' and has much bigger problems than my fav ( when did people start measuring problems haha ? ) . I have told this a million times, but I will say it again,JUMIN ISN'T AN ABUSER , he does care about MC's well being and why do you think he makes MC to stay with him, for her safety. I know my man has problems and I can deal with it , so leave my man alone 👀

( ⚠️ no hate towards 'someone' fans, as long as you recognize his flaws, I wouldn't mind. I am talking about the toxic ones who love to show that their 'someone' is a much better choice , and others are not , by twisting some of their actions into something vile ⚠️ )

•"Omg, Jumin is so creepy, he kidnapped me, he is a borderline YANDERE and is not leaving me alone, I really want to go back to the apartment"....um, logically speaking, MC goes to his penthouse on her OWN ACCORD,not because Jumin invited her and his penthouse is much safer when compared to that apartment. Like, imagine living in a stranger's house knowing nothing about your safety, if I were MC ,I wouldn't mind staying at Jumin's penthouse , until the whole 'unknown hacker' thing is resolved, and you may say that he himself is a stranger to MC, but he starts caring for you as soon as you get his attention , he never lays a finger on you unless you want to, so he seems to be safe for me . If you really wanted to go to the apartment, then go ahead, say all the rude things u want to, a surprise will be waiting for u there, which you claimed to be 'safe', so Chile, anyways-

• " Jumin is a bad boss, jaehee's route says it all 💀, he made her cut her hair, over worked her. That guy is a soul less demon who doesn't care about his employees welfare "....alright.., the classic excuse, I see, Jaehee fans, u guys get a free pass for this, he was a jerk in that route, but calling him a bad boss? Hmm....I don't think I have ever seen a boss who wouldn't mind seeing their assistant shitting on them , but he leaves Jaehee to do that. That hair cut part pissed me off, but he only did this, with the aim to protect her from his father. Jaehee could have communicated her difficulties before hand, instead of not doing her work properly (with regards to jaehee's route) , there is always a option called 'resignation', u knw, jaehee ^^ moreover , he did not under pay her at all, she was a well paid employee, he even a gives a vacation for her in his route, what boss would do that? . And, for your kind information, no one in the whole RFA, not even MC, were concerned about jumin when he took seven's car and went on for a ride eventhough he doesn't even knw how to drive, like isn't this is a warning sign? . He himself had a hard time in jaehee's route, so just like how jaehee stans understand her part of the story, I understood Jumin's part of the story despite playing jaehee's route BEFORE Jumin's route.

• "Jumin han fans seems to love abuse, what the hell is wrong with them?!" As a person who had an abusive friendship , I can totally confirm, that, he is a bit controlling, but not ABUSIVE , please stop throwing the word abuse just like that , i have already seen a number of fans victim blaming.

• "U like Jumin Han from Mystic messenger ? Then, you must have daddy issues 💫?! haha...". I have a healthy relationship with my dad, who is my role model and admire him a lot so I don't think you can judge me just because i love a guy who looks dominant to you 👀

• "Oh wow, u love Jumin, that means you are into kinky stuff ?" 😐 again, People with kink, I don't have anything against you, you enjoy ur thing! It's just that I don't like it when some people generalize other fans.

I did miss a statement, we all know the infamous " 50 shades of Jumin Han" duh....🥴

I sometimes feel uncomfortable to even say that my fav character is Jumin Han, cuz all the replies would be like, "OMG! DADDY, 50 SHADES OF JUMIN". I have to say this, if you are a fan of Jumin only because of that infamous BE2 and not because of his character, u r not even a fan of Jumin, I am sorry if I offended any fans of that end but the fact that some of us are glorifying it too much pains me.

This is how Jumin really is to us, (i. e, real fans of Jumin), whether u believe it or not :

• He had a hard time connecting with people which in turns made him look unempathetic and selfish because of his familial issues.

• He yearns for someone who can understand and love him just the way he is , I mean ,what do you expect? his 'friends' doesn't even give a shit about him, his first love & his best friend, has 'gone' far away. This is the biggest reason he even clings to you like anything.

• He definitely isn't a daddy dom material, he is that soft loyal hubby type who gets very serious when it comes to work. Actually he is like a mirror, he gives back to you, what you give it to him, be it love , lust ( in context with his BE2 ) or whatever it might be

• He literally begs MC to stay with him at one point, only because he thinks that she can understand him much better than his 'friends', or his cat, Elizabeth the 3rd.

• Jumin isn't perfect , so obviously he made a number of mistakes too..especially in jaehee's route . He has done some good and bad deeds and I acknowledge both as it is 💯

Jumin wants love and he deserves all the love just like other characters and Please stop generalizing all the fans , even if you hate that character, it's always better to ignore it rather than hating on it .

yeah honestly i can never recall a time where deku came out of a situation the loser, even when he loses physically he usually reaches his goal/has the moral high ground. for example all might himself says this with the "deku looked up to katsuki's power and determination (positive) vs katsuki feared deku's spirit (negative)" line. like it's obvious who the one who needs more improvement is. i can count very few times where he ultimately did the wrong thing.

and i mean a character like him is hard to develop, because his whole schtick is that he possessed heroic spirit but not the power to back it up. he starts the series with all the character traits he needs to have, because that's the reason all might picked him in the first place.

and i understand that eventually his self destructive tendencies will be addressed, but it's a flaw (one of the few sometimes painted as such) that's been with him since the very beginning, and three hundred chapters later a poor job has been done of addressing it imo, because it hasn't been addressed at all.

if anything the series keeps sending mixed signals, because it's always like "hooo no break bones little green boi bones breaky bad" but then every time he does break his bones it ends with him the winner. the closest he comes to a repercussion is when he's a dead weight at the camp, but even then he takes down muscular solo, and he couldn't have just run away with kouta, since that would mean a wild murder happy muscular running around. what else could he have done there? and the doctors are like "if you keep breaking your arms they will literally become unusable confetti" but instead of having him stop doing that, the series finds ways to bypass the repercussions, like oh look here, convenient overpowered time girl who will rewind you just enough to undo ur self-harm in an instant! it's like the narrative keeps telling deku, self harm is the answer!! and even after kacchan says 'don't be fucking dumb' the vestiges still go 'yes boy self harm is the answer!!" and AM feeds into that too by virtue of existing, since that dude's whole deal was self-depravation in the name of greater good.

and ive said all this, and you're 300 chapters into a series and you've got an mc whose outlook has changed in a pretty tiny way outside of gaining confidence, whose flaws have not been addressed because the series isn't sure if the flaws are actually virtues and isn't sure if willingness to self-harm in order to win is a heroic trait or not.

but then, you could say that this is actually a genius character arc, because this self-destruction will only take you so far, and with izuku winning everything,his mind has just grown convinced that "self harm and self-sacrifice is the answer!!!" until well, it isn't. sure he dealt with the small fries through it, but it's not sustainable, and it's how at least two of his predecessors died/retired.

PLW was the first instance of deku seeing that his bogus self-harm doesn't always end well. he was doing a poor job of collaborating with everyone else there, and katsuki had to literally almost die to keep him from dying due to recklessness. for the first time in forever, his mentality made him not just a dead-weight, but a danger teammates need to sacrifice themselves to cover for.

and im like 🤯 because it took 300 chapters but we've just watched OFA all might's ideologically slowly dismantled for how toxic it is and i have no idea what im even saying anymore.

the point is, izuku is a dear character to me and the perfect mc for the series,but his arc leaves me conflicted because i cannot decide if it's genius or nearly non-existent and it drives me crazy

I think Dekus character arc problem is that Hori lets his characters develop in a pretty organic way

Most (if not all) the other characters are pressured into changing because their problems get in the way of their goals, aren’t sustainable, and are condemned by society

So they get addressed because the only way around them is through

Meanwhile Deku “fuck the natural order” Midoriya’s-

-main character flaw’s only true obstacle is that it isn’t sustainable, but because the flaw is self sacrifice sustainability isn’t a top concern for him, getting to the next fight would be cool but saving people here and now is what matters

He keeps achieving his goals through this manner, so unless his goals change this isn’t an obstacle

Society praises this behavior until the lack of sustainability catches up and the hero is no longer useful

So as of now the only way he could be forced to confront this flaw is if the sustainability runs out, then everyone’s fucked and we all drown in our tears

But if something or someone forced him to reconsider his goals just a twinge, forced him to care about something other than just saving/winning, made him want to be a little selfish and a lot more self preserving, made him value what he could get from life instead of just what he could give to it

Well than his flaw would suddenly be a very big obstacle to his goals, if his self sacrificing was hurting someone close to him societal values would from on it a little more. If Deku wanted something off the battlefield as badly as he did on it he’d have a new obstacle

And Bakugo was getting dangerously close,

Bakugo was at home while his wife was at work and his 15 year old was at school. Sitting at the table it was about time for his kid to come home and he wanted to talk about their day and eat dinner together but they were almost an hour late and he started worrying since they wouldn’t answer his calls or text

Around 5:15 the door bursting open and Bakugo stood up ready to fight thinking it was a villain but it was his kid — Their clothes were ripped, bruised, bleeding and crying. Stumbling inside they fell to the floor and whimpered in pain

“What the fuck?!” Katsuki basically yelled as he ran over to them and sat them up. He was so pissed off to the point he was so close to setting off explosions “What the hell happened?!”

“T-they... jumped me on my way home... and stole some of my stuff” They say as they start crying thinking about it, Bakugo picked them up and held them in his arms as he walked to the bathroom and placed them down on the toilet which was closed

So much was going through his mind as he looked for everything, he was so pissed people can do something so disgusting to someone so kind like his son/daughter. He was mainly pissed at the fact he couldn’t protect them when it happened

Once returning he got them all washed in a warm Bath, cleaned and covered their wounds, once everything was taken care of he picked them up and took them to their room so they can rest, even gave them their favourite stuffed animal they’ve had since they were a baby

“I’ll check on you later...” placing a kiss on their head he walked out to call the school and once his wife got home he told her everything, she came into their room so worried only to see them sleeping peacefully.

The bullies ended getting expelled and time in juvenile hall since it was after school hours and they (you) moved schools

Deku (kidnapping...)

Deku was at home when he got a text from an unknown number, at first he was gonna delete it but he didn’t because he had a strange feeling he should look at it, once he did his heart nearly stopped when he saw a photo of his 16 year old son/daughter tied up on the floor in underwear (and bra if you’re a girl)

Then a text underneath read ; “We’re borrowing them for a little bit. If you want them back come find us. Don’t worry they aren’t hurt that badly. They’re still breathing — LOV”

Surprisingly they said who they were, Deku immediately got up and ran out the door, he wasn’t even thinking about anything anymore. His kid was the only thing he cared about right now

He didn’t care if it took him days to find them — As long as they are okay thats all that matters, thankfully it only took him a few hours to find exactly where they were and when he did he didn’t hesitate at all to fight everyone of them off

After he was done fighting he immediately picked his son/daughter up and ran to safety, taking off his shirt to give to them and he ran to the closet hospital to see if they had any serious injuries

“Don’t worry, dad’s got you. We’ll get you all checked up and we can go home to relax there” Deku was always so gentle and kind with his kid, even if they did something wrong.

Shoto (nomu)

Shoto and his 15 year older son/daughter were having a nice day out that day, they got ice cream together, went to an arcade, they got a new stuffed animal that they put in the car at the mall so they didn’t get tired walking with it

Just when you thought things couldn’t get bad — It did. A bunch of villains attacked the mall with two Nomus, one Nomu on each side of the mall. There was a shit ton of chaos happening and after about a few minutes of trying to fight off the nomus and villains something happened Shoto was scared shitless of happening. His kid was hurt pretty badly by one of the Nomus trying to protect a civilian from it

They were punched so hard in the stomach they flew to the wall and hit it pretty hard, somehow a piece of glass cut them on the face and a few broken bones — Their breathing was slow... so much blood was near them and Shoto legitimately thought they died until they moved just a bit

Paramedics came and so did a few heros, fighting off the nomus and Villains so that Shoto could get to his kid. Paramedics got them into their truck attached to so many different machines in one small truck

“What do you mean I can’t go in there with them?! That’s my fucking kid!” Shoto rarely lost his temper and yelled and cussed but he was so worried he had to.

“Sir, you can follow us there” was the last thing one of the paramedics said before closing the door and they sped away, Shoto ran as fast as he possibly could to his car and got inside, going over the speed limit to get to the hospital faster, surprisingly didn’t get pulled over on his way there

After about a few hours of waiting to see his kid to see if they were okay a nurse came out to him

“Mr Todoroki?” She called out, Shoto stood up so fast he also passed the fuck out from it

“Are they okay?!”

“They’re doing good, they’re awake. But three things we need to tell you; on the way here they did die for about a minute but they came back. We were pretty shocked to see that happen, they have a pretty big scar on their eye, but nothing we couldn’t fix! And lastly they have a broken arm and rib. You can go see them”

Shoto nodded at this information and he went to grab the stuffed animal he brought in from the car so he had something to hug, walking to the room that they were in he broke into tears seeing them

“Oh thank god you’re okay!” He said going over to grab onto their non injured hand

“Dad... I—“ they said as they felt tears build up in their eye, they held his hand tightly and smiled very softly — Still in pain when they did “I told you you’re not getting rid of me that easy, I’m staying forever” They said in reassurance as if they were the parent

even though she's still going to end up getting sleepy anyway later in the afternoon

You get most of your studying done at the beginning of your study date so it's not really a problem

It's usually takeout but sometimes you guys make your own dinner for fun!

it always turns out almost inedible and burned because neither of you were paying attention to the stove

overall, hanging out with her is just lighthearted and filled with giggles

honestly i just want to refute dream apologists thats why im making this post. i think that dream as a villain is interesting but i think that trying to make him out to be secretly a good guy is just bad ngl. also /roleplay and all

dream as a villain

dream is a villain. he is chaotic evil according to wilbur, deliberately does not stream to appear less sympathetic (and yet), and is set up as an antagonist to tommy who bears the title ‘hero’. dream is not a good person, no matter how you look at it or try to justify his actions.

‘but he wants to unite everyone to be a big family :((’ the ends dont justify the means believe it or not. having a vaguely positive goal does not excuse the actions you’ve done. it also goes hand and hand with saying dream is correct for punishing tommy the way he did because he acted up. if i socked you across the face and then suddenly said ‘sorry there was a roach on ur face’ does that make it okay? probably not i still punched you, enacting an unnecessary amount of violence. thats a very simple analogy i will admit and there are more complex comparisons. another example off the top of my head is say a child just scribbled all over you walls with crayons. would hitting them be a justified answer? if u said hes thats really fucked of u go seek help u loon. violence as a punishment is very toxic, just because it gets the job done does not mean it is okay. at the end of the day, you still committed this act and the harm you caused is real, having a good motive doesnt suddenly make it okay.

‘but tommy causes all of the conflict’ the disk war wasnt even caused by tommy, it was sapnap and then tommy got involved. and the reason why tommy even caused conflict was because of the discs, because he wanted them back. and most of the time there was a level of antagonism from another party, such as schlatt exiling him, dream taking the disks in the first place, dream threatening l’manberg. and if dream wanted to end the conflict so badly, why didnt he just give tommy back his disks? tommy upfront said everything started with the disks, so he wants them back so he could end the conflict. notice how after tommy got his disks back he has been staying out of conflict, apologizing to everyone, and the only bad thing hes done is try to scam people but everyone does that. this would have been the most peaceful option, yet dream chose the path that would further antagonize tommy which then draws everyone else into conflict. why did dream need to have leverage over tommy so badly? why did he want to hold power over tommy so badly? its because of control, and that’s ultimately dreams end goal. sure he wants a big server family, but would said family have a free will?

‘but dream is sad’ the thing is dream is completely at fault for everything that happened to him. he pushed away sapnap (and george ig). he tried to take control over the server and their possessions. literally everything that happened to tommy. literally everything involving ranboo. villains can be sympathetic, i am not arguing against that. but it does not mean that they should be left off the hook. that doesnt mean u should ignore the shit theyve done because ‘oh no theyre sad’ because it doesnt make anything better. dream had this shit coming for him.

now people also skirt around calling dream an abuser. which is fair ig, its a very loaded word. its much easier to say manipulated. that being said, dream can classify as abusive. and no, tommy is not abusive. abuse is about control and a power imbalance. dream has power over tommy, but tommy does not have power over dream, at least not in the way dream does. he’s taking back power to stand up for himself, dream uses power to control.

the reasons i listed for why dream is from the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project so if u want a source on that, there you go.

using coercion or threats: dream often threatened tommy, such as the pit thing and often employed violence on him. while normally this could be attributed to Normal Minecraft Player Go Smack. minecraft mechanics cannot always translate to real world since violence is pretty normal in minecraft however we also need to consider the context of the scene. dream gave an order, tommy refused, dream applies violence, tommy submitted. thats why its a threat, it has tangible effects that can correlate to real life.

using intimidation: dream blew up logsteadshire as a punishment. dream also destroyed tommys items anytime he visited. dream also hit tommy with his axe i believe. he killed mushroom henry, one of tommys pets.

Using Emotional Abuse: dream guiltripped the shit out of tommy for just hiding things and pinning the blame on tommy for just wanting his own private items. he definitely played mind games on tommy, pretending to be his friend. honestly i probably dont even need to go as in depth because it was so obvious.

Using Isolation: putting him in exile in the first place. destroying the bether portal so no one could visit tommy anymore. i really dont think i need to expand upon that.

Minimizing, Denying, and Blaming: dream in tommys stream when he got trapped said that exile wasnt that bad. he does shift the blame onto tommy for logsteadshire being blown up, even though dreams reaction was entirely unjustified for not listening and hiding.

Using Economic Abuse: see this is where i attempt to parallel minecraft mechanics to real life. obviously, there is no monetary system in place, so when i mean economic, i will use valuables such as armor, food, etc in place of currency. the idea behind economic abuse is to limit the victim’s resources so that they are dependent on the abuser and cannot escape. dream only really allowed tommy to have the armor he gave him while not giving access to armor so he does not regain a sense of power, and in the prison stream, dream holds all the potatoes which puts him in a position of power over tommy. this argument is more ambiguous i feel cause the whole minecraft mechanics thing is kinda weird so u don’t necessarily have to take this part in.

i feel like i need to emphasize this very strongly because dream is not a good person. abuse cannot and should not be a response to someone. its an awful mentality to have. i just want to prove the point that dream is not a good person, his reasons absolutely do not justify his actions.

what makes a good redemption

redemption arcs are tricky. when done right they are great. when done poorly, its a slap in the face. rn im going to establish a formula to what makes a good redemption with an example.

the most well known example of a good redemption is zuko from atla. first, its the magnitude of what theyve done and why. zuko did commit some shitty actions, since he was in a position of power in the fire nation but its because he is a child being abused and wanted to regain honor. zukos real awful acts was season 1 and the whole betrayal thing. thats not to say that zukos actions suddenly are okay, he did shitty things. but its something that can be traced to a higher entity or seem less malicious then the other villains. the thing also about the magnitude of actions is that there is a certain point of atrocities that there is no redemption. some people simply cannot be redeemed because the actions they commit are so ingrained in their character or the action itself has serious moral issues that it would just be wrong.

the next is acknowleding what they did was wrong. a genuine reflection on the self and analyzing what they did and why it was not okay. zuko realized what he did to uncle iroh was bad for example. he turned his back on his father, realizing he didnt and shouldnt seek acknowledgment from someone as heinous as him. its pointing out your actions and going ‘hey, this wasnt right i should not have done this’ and not even excusing ur actions. its also going straight for the root of the problem and figuring out to stamp it from the source. just because a character is sad does not mean they are reflecting, sometimes they are attempting to garner pity. it has to be direct and clear acknowledgement of the injustice.

and finally, an important part about redemption arcs is the actual redemption part. its when you make amends. zuko made amends with katara by trying to help her get revenge, he fought against the fire nation and tried to make things more peaceful in his rule. he apologized to iroh. an important part of the amends section is that it does have to be a genuine desire to change and become a better person, not to change a person’s perception of you. the thing is u cant expect a person youve hurt to forgive you. you cant expect people to be sympathetic towards you nor should u attempt to make urself sympathetic. u shouldnt be expecting a pat on the back or an award. redemption is about internal and character change.

why dream should not be redeemed

ive already established the key points to a good redemption (imo) but heres where dream falls short. his actions are extremely heavy so redemption may not even really be possible. abuse is not something you can wave off so it does cross to the point of fucked up. acknowledgement of what he did was wrong? all he said was that he changed, yet never explained why he changed or was too vague. he needed to label specifically what he did and bring it up. attempting to make amends? he’s been doing the exact opposite in fact he continues to manipulate tommy and ranboo. its not a genuine change. he is still repeating the cycle and has given no indication of ceasing. at the moment he does not have any signs of redemption.

and the thing is most of the attention around a dream redemption comes from either justifying his motives (which i do want to emphasize does not make anything suddenly okay) and because he is sad in prison sad face. these are not good reasons. its gonna pain me severely to bring this up but snape from harry potter does have some form of sad character ig yet he very much abused his authority to bully children as old as 11 just because he said ‘aight gonna die’ doesnt suddenly make his general bigotry and abuse suddenly okay there is a threshold. again im so sorry for using harry potter as an example none were coming to mind and i needed a popular one i do not like harry potter please dont say i do i would pass away.

and the last thing to consider is the audience. keep in mind that the audience is composed of minors and while yes there are adults, minors are the main component of the fandom. keep in mind that there are quite a few people who can relate to tommys character because they might be in the same position or have gone through his experiences. tell me what kind of message does it send to that audience that abusers can be redeemed. this is not a narrative u should push to this audience in these situations and the writers are seemingly aware of it. remember how in exile tommy spiraled into a suicidal mentality? consider how fucked of a message it would be if he just committed suicide instead of escaping abuse and attempting to recover from his experiences. tommy did an excellent job in not going that route and having a message of ‘it will not get better’. its the same thing here. victims are not obligated to care for or forgive their abuser, and portraying an abuser as sympathetic might fuck with the message a lot, even change their perception in that ‘oh, maybe my abuser was right, maybe they had a reason for treating me the way they did’. this is not to say that every victim watching this will internalize this message, but people also look up to these characters. there can be a degree of influence from the story onto oneself and thats the dangerous part.

conclusion

all in all dream is a shitbag asshole and probably shouldnt get a redemption because it would not be pog thanks for coming to my ted talk.

ok so my main issue with the post is how it calls tommy selfish - tommy isn't selfish for having trauma, especially after dream specifically told tommy before that he was "too fun" to stop messing with so like as soon as dream got out of COURSE his first instinct was to think dream was coming for him. obviously that wasn't helped by the fact that dream DID immediately go for tommy when getting out, even if it was just to freak him out and chase him around and not actually hurt him

also like - no matter what ur stance on cdream is, he is still a bad person who's done bad things, and no matter how beat up and unwell looking he might have been if he'd just escaped from prison... that's not gonna like, make tommy want to help him or anything. tommy isn't selfish for not helping dream? or whatever IDK maybe the post is just phrased badly. tommy was hurt and traumatized by dream, he isn't a selfish dickhead for not noticing or caring about how hurt dream was and instead focusing on himself

Later, when MK had left, Wukong, for the first time in centuries, looking into a mirror, used the golden vision on himself.

There was nothing there.

He reels back from the mirror in shock. Thoughts race through his mind.

Who am I?

Maybe this was all a dream. A nightmare. Maybe, if he thought about it hard enough, he'd wake up.

What is happening?

He knew it wasn't though. Somehow he could tell it wasn't.

Who am I, if not Wukong?

He remembered the others reincarnating. He remembered crying for weeks.

Are those memories real?

He's shaking, he realizes. He kneels on the ground, in shock.

What am I?

He holds his arms. Curls up. He knows what he is.

Am I real?

He starts crying.

He knows that he isn't.

He's not immortal. Not invulnerable like he thought he was.

MK doesn't know. MK doesn't know anything.

He's nervous.

What if the kid doesn't need him anymore? Will he just vanish?

MK looked up to him. Saw him as a mentor figure. If he found out that Wukong wasn't actually real-

The kid's reaction....if Wukong had to guess, it would end up being ten times worse than his was.

So he doesn't tell him.

He really should've.

There's a demon. One the kid can't face on his own. A dangerous one, one that would not hesitate to kill.

Wukong knows that he has to help him.

It shouldn't scare him as much as it does. He's fought many battles before, these past few centuries, and has emerged from all of them unscathed.

It's terrifying, realizing how many times he was actually so close to death.

But still, he hesitates. The new knowledge that he's learned still churning in his mind.

He's just a hair clone. He's not immortal, like the original.

 And on some level, he curses the original Wukong for having caused this. Wouldn't it have been easier to just leave a note for his next incarnation, instead of creating a clone with an identity crisis?

And yet still, despite all this, when the demon throws an attack that Wukong knows the kid can't avoid, he barely even thinks about it.

It's not until he's taken MK's place in the line of fire that he realizes just how bad of an idea this was.

He's not ready to die.

But then again, nobody ever is.

MK watches, in horror, as his mentor pushes him out of the way, taking the hit for him.

In a matter of seconds, a moment that seems to last forever, their eyes meet.

MK sees him mouth the words "I'm sorry.", right before the Monkey King vanishes in a blast of golden light.

The demon is defeated surprisingly easily after that.

Grief, when combined with anger, is a shockingly good motivator.

The monkeys deliver the letter to his room on day 3.

Day 3 of MK not leaving the apartment that is.

He doesn't actually bother to read the letter until day 5. He wanted to put it off as long as possible. To hold on to denial hope, for just a bit longer.

The letter sends that all crashing down.

He can't find it in him to believe it at first.

The idea of being the reincarnation of the Monkey King, that the Wukong he knew was just a hair clone-

Well, it just sounded absurd.

Deep down though, he'd always known it was true.

How could he?

They'd all become friends with the clone, Monkey King, during the time they'd known him.

To let them know that the person they were mourning technically hadn't been real, and that MK was the reincarnation of the real Wukong-

MK shuddered to think about how they'd react.

He knew they wouldn't be mad at him. He knew that for a fact.

...Knowing what he knew would only make them sadder.

And, in MK's mind, that was worse.

This knowledge would be his burden, his to carry alone.

For six weeks, he avoids returning to the mountain.

He spends those six weeks debating with himself. He knows he should go to the mountain. To get rid of the lingering doubts in his mind. To finally have some sense of closure, some resolution to this whole mess.

He can't bring himself to go.

It takes him starting to see Wukong's reflection when he looks in the mirror to head for the mountain.

The mountain hasn't changed in the six weeks he'd been avoiding it.

He's a fool for thinking it would have.

He walks through the forest, through the waterfall, through the cave.

He arrives at Wukong's little house.

The monkeys are quiet. They're giving him his space.

He can't decide if he's thankful for that or not.

He walks into the house. It's exactly as he remembers it.

MK spends a while there, just walking around, searching for-

For what?

...For someone who no longer exists.

He collapses, finally, on the steps to Wukong's house. He pulls his knees to his chest, curling up.

A sob wracks his body.

Despite himself, he had still been holding on to some string of denial, a thread of hope, of want for the letter to have been wrong. For Wukong to still be here.

Which, MK thought, in dark amusement, technically, he was here, since, apparently, MK was him.

But it wasn't the same.

It just wasn't.

And it never would be.

Once they were alone in the war room, the last person filing out, Catra turned to Adora. Anger was plastered plain and clear all over her face.

“Do you have to make everything so difficult?” Adora snapped, already moving forward to examine the maps and documents from the meeting that had just ended. “I’m trying to convince them not to kill you, and you’re not helping at all.”

Indignation boiled in Catra’s chest. “I don’t need your help,” she bit back, crossing her arms. “I never did. I didn’t even ask to be brought here.”

Adora’s eyes scanned over a letter, supposedly from one of their allies, then huffed and discarded it to the table. “You know I didn’t have a choice. It was that, or both of us would have been killed.”

“Yeah, well, the second option isn’t sounding too bad right now.” Catra rolled her eyes, already moving to leave the room. They were done here. Outside, her guards would be waiting to take her back to her cell, which wasn’t much of a cell as it was just an ordinary room.

But a hand grabbed at her wrist before she could touch the door to signal it to open. “Please...C’y—Your Highness,” Adora corrected, a blush rising to her cheeks. The frustration in her features had subsided, replaced now with worry. “Just...be careful what you say. No one here wants to hurt you.”

Catra shoved her hand away, fighting the heat rising on her neck. “That’s bullshit,” she hissed between her teeth. She stepped forward into Adora’s personal space, glaring up at her. “And don’t you dare tell me what to do, Aurora.”

The use of her fake name made Adora wince, but her agitation was slowly returning. “You are under the rebellion’s protection now, Princess,” she threw right back. Catra’s lips parted, first in surprise, and then to scowl at her. She knew damn well that C’yra hated to be called by her title, especially in such a mocking way. “If you want to live, I’d take my advice.”

The room grew quiet; a pin could drop and it would be heard around the world. Catra noticed then how close they were, just inches apart.

“You’ve changed,” she croaked out, tears springing to her eyes. As C’yra, she wiped them away angrily, but she couldn’t help but think how they applied to real life. Maybe that was why the tears had come to her so easily. Years of built up anger and grief, both from her and from C’yra, were now threatening to spill onto her cheeks. “When you...when I saw your face at the ball, your face, not hers,” she continued, referring to Adora’s disguise that she had fallen for. “I thought that I had died. There was...no possible, plausible way that you were alive after all these years, and yet here you are.” She gestured weakly with her hand. “But the Marlena in front of me isn’t my Marlena.”

Adora’s breath hitched, and Catra couldn’t help but glance down at her lips. “Well, I guess that makes two of us.”

Catra gulped, knowing she needed to leave, that she wasn’t supposed to be this close to Adora in the first place. But it was like two magnets, once facing one another with the same side, finally coming together after one of them was flipped. Adora must have noticed the new spark of energy, too, for her cheeks were a rosy red again and her face soft as she looked down at Catra with parted lips.

Even if she knew she would be in trouble for going through with what she was about to do, in more ways than one, Catra tilted her chin up. Adora started for a moment, but when Catra didn’t back down, she met her halfway in a gentle, sweet kiss.

Except this wasn’t a gentle moment. It wasn’t supposed to be, anyway. Remembering C’yra’s anger, all her pent up frustration for months now, Catra deepened the kiss with a sharp inhale, throwing her arms around Adora to bring her closer.

Adora was smart and picked up quickly, as though remembering that this wasn’t real. It wasn’t them. It hadn’t been them for a long time. Not since high school. She responded enthusiastically to Catra’s lips, backing her up until Catra was pinned to the door.

She made sure it was passionate, enough to make even the most sinful of people blush. Needy, desperate, aching for more, all things she had always believed were the unspoken words that made up C’yra’s whole world. A princess who hated her life and most of the people in it, until she found a home within a girl just as lonely as she was. But as most good things C’yra had ever had, the girl abandoned her too. Catra had always felt a soft spot toward her, finding similarities in her narrative.

When Adora’s lips broke from hers and trailed down to her neck, trembling but just as desperate as Catra was, Catra sighed. “A—“ she began, then tensed up underneath Adora’s hold, stopping herself from saying the wrong name. “Marlena,” she breathed this time, the name coming out in a stammer to cover her slip up.

If there weren’t dozens of people waiting on them, Catra could’ve indulged in this fantasy a bit longer. But as it was, they weren’t even supposed to kiss, and Catra was supposed to be over Adora after three years had passed since she broke her heart.

Forcing herself back into the mind of C’yra, who was really no different than Catra, her eyes shot open with a gasp and she pushed Adora off of her just as she began to kiss her collarbone.

They stared at one another, breathing hard and redder than the peeling paint on the walls. Catra swallowed, blinked, shook her head, then turned to leave.

The second she was through the door, a loud, amplified voice yelled out, “Cut!”

Not long after, there was a smattering of applause, which was the last reaction Catra expected to get from everyone watching that scene. The kiss wasn’t scripted; their characters weren’t a couple, but the tension and chemistry between them was obvious, especially considering the history they had. It only felt natural for the two to kiss in that moment, even if the screenwriters or director hadn’t planned for it. Normally, improv was frowned upon in this show.

“That. Was. Gorgeous!” DT had the brightest smile on their face, possibly the biggest one Catra had seen in weeks. They were difficult to please, after all.

“It was?” Catra whipped her head around to see Adora, already pulling on her red jacket over her costume and stepping through the door Catra had. She looked just as confused as Catra felt.

“It was marvelous!” DT gushed, placing a hand on Adora’s bicep that she gently shrugged away from. DT didn’t seem to care. “Oh, I knew I didn’t make a mistake casting the two of you for these parts! The fans are simply going to explode when they see this!” Their eyes sparkled in that way they always did when they got an idea. “We’ll work it into the script immediately, because I want to do that again. Kyle!” And they were done with the two of them just like that, already moving on to make plans that involved the kiss, the two characters, what would have to be rewritten and reworked and how they would go about keeping something this big, this “delicious,” a secret from the media and viewers. Catra couldn’t help but roll her eyes when they loudly exclaimed what a genius they were, even though they had Catra and Adora to thank.

“So, um…” She turned back to face Adora, who was scratching the back of her neck awkwardly. “That was...you did good. Good thinking about the kiss.”

“Yeah, um, thanks.” Catra licked her lips. “You, too.”

Before Adora could continue the conversation, because she always did no matter how awkward or weird the situation was, Catra turned and began walking. She wasn’t sure where she was going. Maybe to find Scorpia, maybe to go to the bathroom, maybe to go back to her trailer even though she didn’t have much time before the next scene would be starting.

She didn’t care. Because three years ago, she had promised herself that she was going to forget about Adora. Before they started working on this stupid show together, she had believed she had finally gotten over her. And then the kiss happened, and Catra was suddenly aware of every time they had danced around one another dangerously. The electrified brushes against one another in a cramped space, the way Catra had found herself staring when they weren’t filming, the way she hated seeing Adora in a shirt that revealed her arms. The moments were endless, and they only meant one thing.

Catra was in deep, deep shit.

Hi i havent read the books post-resurrection so im kinda lost on why you dont like phase 2 val? She was easily one of my favourite characters ever, she was flawed (and the books took time to acknowledge them) and relatable and still really admirable (intelligent, brave, loyal) and i really liked her and really appreciated that she wasn’t perfect unlike every other young adult heroines. What went wrong😢😢😢😢

Okay I'm gonna put this under a cut because I very strongly dislike phase 2 val and I know it bugs people who don't feel the same, so. Dead dove dont eat

Okay so first off, phase 1 val and phase 2 val are completely different people. literally. phase 1 val was based on an ex-friend of lardo's who used to apparently be involved pretty heavily in like, editing the books and "she'd react like this" or "val wouldn't say that", and that val she was one of my favourite fictional characters from when book one came out to the release of resurrection. phase 2 val is based on his whiny little girlfriend who likes to start shit with 14yos on twitter, and you can absolutely tell she is no longer the same person. so the long story short of "what went wrong" is "the original irl val's friendship with dirty laundry ended for whatever reason and he decided to retcon her entire personality to suit his gf"

Phase 2 Val, in my opinion:

Weak, like won't even fight back when she gets jumped bc boo fucking hoo she's so awful, bitch get up already, nobody signed up for ur pity party

Whiny. So fucking whiny. All the time. And she's the POV character so it's inescapable.

"Pacifist" but in a really pathetic virtue-signalling kind of way like "Oh, I've done such terrible thiiiiiiiiiiings I'm so awfulllllllllllll look how good I'm trying to be nowwwwwwww pay attention to meeeeeeee" kind of way, it was both boring and a massive eye roll. It's a book about magic and asskicking. Kick some ass. We're here for escapism not "realistic" whining. Yes, irl she'd be a mess. As an author it's his job to strike a balance between the "realism" he wants to portray and making his readers so depressed and done with his heroine that they quit reading, and in my case, he absolutely failed.

Everything must be about her at all times. Skug is having personal problems? Fuck him, they're about her now. Everything is about how it affects her, and her feelings, and be damned to the person actually having the problem. Fucks phase 2 val cain gives about anyone except herself: 0

Bitter and jaded. Which yeah I get why but it's like jesus christ what do we get out of reading about this? It's not even good bitter and jaded where it makes you empathise or admire her strength in adversity or whatever, she's just become a really nasty person with no redeeming features that I could see. Which? Landy outright said she's based on his gf? If your boyfriend is gonna drag ur entire personality through the dirt like that and write "you" as just a collection of incredibly negative traits...yikes.

Really ungrateful about the awesome life she leads? Which bugs me bc I fucking hate mundanity and knowing that all there is to life is fucking working and bad mental health. I would kill to live her life. All she does is moan about it. Like? Quit then. Fuck off back to being a mortal if it's that bad and live the shitty life you wanted to get away from in the first place. That way we'd get no more books, and quite honestly, thank fuck for that. But anyway, she needs to pick one, stick with it, and stop complaining about whatever she chose.

Her POV is now so depressing to read that Resurrection literally tanked my mental health. I'm not kidding. I fell off the self-harm wagon, the suicidal thoughts came back, reading her dissociating would make me dissociate, I just did not cope whatsoever. Being in her head was just like being in my head during my worst points, and I hate myself, so naturally, I hate her too. Like I get why some people like phase two val. I get that her depression is "realistic" and that trauma does just make some people completely dislikeable and self-pitying, and if people want to read about that, then...sure. you do you, my dudes. But I live that reality, I am that person whose trauma made her a dysfunctional, isolated bitch, and I hate, passionately, having it infest the media I consume to escape.

Essentially if I wanted to engage with a bitter, spiteful, depressed piece of shit in her 20s who pushes everyone away and sucks at everything, I'd live my gd life. Yall see me tryna engage with my real life? Hell nah I'm on tumblr dot com burying my head up the ass of whatever fandom will force my brain to produce some s e r o t o n i n and that is what I need this series for

Also? The dynamic she had with skug in phase one? "Until the end"? "You save me, I save you, that's how we work"? Forget that, it doesn't exist anymore. I stopped reading after Midnight, because she was written like he was a coworker she could barely tolerate. They went from "Lardo confirms on twitter that they talked on the phone a bunch while she was in america and he'd always ask her to come home" to "she comes home and proceeds to blank him for five months while she sits in her fuckin multimillionaire's mansion feeling sorry for herself". Their friendship completely disintegrated, they were totally separated for most of the book, she's written as not giving a single shit about him. She treated him like dirt, and their dynamic basically felt like it was becoming "Local Man With History Of Gravitating Towards Abusive Women Makes Same Terrible Choices For Fifth Time" and? that was the point of no return to me. he supports her unconditionally, no matter what he's going through at the time, he's walked on broken bones to try and get to her when she was in danger, she can tell him anything and he'd never use it against her. I did not, for one second in phase two, believe she felt the same about him. tbh it felt like she could - and wanted to - drop him at the first opportunity and not even feel bad about it, and that's not the dynamic that made me so emotionally attached to phase one. i signed up for "until the end", not whatever bullshit phase two has going on.

Apparently she's "less depressed" now and their relationship is "better" in the books published since midnight, which! might well be true. but I haven't read them and don't intend to, and she's gone from one of my favourite fictional characters ever (which! was impressive! because i almost never bond with the female lead - i normally get attached exclusively to the character i crush on, which would be skug here. val was the first female lead i actually cared about since xena! so im deeply salty about losing her!) to a character i? honestly prefer to pretend doesn't exist. i live in war era dead men/generals crackship land because that way, i don't have to acknowledge her or the fuckin character assassination phase 2 pulled on her.

so yeah, no hate towards phase one val at all. phase one val was awesome and flawed and gave me something to aspire to despite my shitty mental health and trauma, and if she'd kept her original personality she might still have been those things. but the original "real life" val is no longer involved (and doesn't talk to landy at all anymore, apparently), and the val based on landy's insufferable gf? i cannot get behind her at all ever, four for skug and none for phase two val cain bye
