Today I am grateful for book club.
Between a new job, an extra class at a second job, and things at home, I’ve been in a bit of a funk. I’m generally not connecting with people the way I like to. The #ALANReads Book Club allowed me to do that today and has helped me remember why I like reading in the first place.

Today I am grateful for creativity.
I, with the help of roll tables from Perilous Wilds, wrote a Dungeon World session for my wife and friends that they enjoyed. I find comfort in the creation process and satisfaction in their enjoyment.

Today I am grateful for cold brew green tea.
The strawberry mojito green tea from Old Barrel Tea Company was a light start to a busy morning.

Today I am grateful for the Chuck It.
A very simple thing that brings me joy is watching my 3 year old shih tzu run full out. He chases the ball. I watch him run. My shoulder doesn’t hurt at the end of a play session. Wins all around.

Today I am grateful for space heaters.
My sister-in-law bought a space heater when she was visiting a few winter breaks ago. The desert is still cold in the morning, and the space heater served to warm the area of the garage where my bike is set up on the trainer. My toes tend to get so cold they hurt; thicker socks don’t fit in my cycling shoes.

The Wandering | TRaFoS 003
And I’m on fire, treasure lust only slightly sated by spirit released in the flame. I wander through a grove. I don’t want to touch the trees, but the leaves loudly crunch under the weight of new legs attempting to connect to a mind older than time. Do trees still live without spirit? Do people? Five score Ale Jan came through the doorway into Serathis, beginning The Wandering Period, the search…

2024 in Books
This year I’ve added a new purpose for reading to my list of purposes: fodder for the games I’m GMing. It’s surprisingly awesome. I’m contemplating listing some of the ideas I pull in this space in the future. But without further ado, here’s my 2024 in books, pulled from The Storygraph.

Perhaps I Tell This Story | TRaFoS 002
I was there at the end when the doorway collapsed. I may have been there at the beginning when the first came through. The implosion left me scrambled; memories come with the shift of the winds. Perhaps if I tell what I remember as I remember, that will help with the remembering. Hi. I’m Echo. To build out this world, Serathis, I’m playing Microscope, a game by Ben Robbins. Because it’s a game…

The Rise and Fall of Serathis | 001
This year, I started GMing a few table top role playing games for my wife, friends, and nieces. I have found that I very much enjoy building games and challenges that they have fun in. There is a non-player character in one of the games that I wanted to explore, so I decided to try a solo game. The idea: to construct the backstory for the character that explains that character’s motivation in…

Currently Reading: Flyboy by Kasey LeBlanc.
#currentlyreading Flyboy by Kasey LeBlanc. Really, I'm using this post to test a Wordpress feature. I am really reading this book, though.
One of my favorite things to do is sit outside and read a book. Right now, I’m reading Flyboy by Kasey LeBlanc. It’s billed as Simon vs. the Homo sapiens Agenda meets The Night Circus. I’m only a few chapters in, but I might also see some Pride & Prejudice and Gilmore Girls (less Loralai & Loralai and more Lorialai and Emily and Richard–IYKYK) as well. As I keep reading, I’ll report back.

Spring 2024 TBR Revisited | July 9, 2024
Dear Intrepid Reader, In April of this year, I did a Top Ten Tuesday about my Spring TBR. With the work I had on my plate, I thought it easiest to make a list of the picture books I’d be listening to while working. Here’s how that turned out (bold face indicates read) Kicks in the Sky by C. G. Esperanca Eyes that Speak to the Stars by Joanna Ho You Matter to Me by Doyin Richards Finding My…

Time for a Book Blog Refresh | July 4, 2024
Dear Intrepid Reader, It’s been a minute since I’ve done any regular blogging. Five total posts in 2023. Just a few this year. I’ve missed it. Six years ago, I left the classroom to take a district-level instructional coaching position. For the 12 years prior to that, all of my blogging, videos, etc. were for my 8th grade students. I’ve struggled with what to do with this space since then,…

Books I Was Super Excited to Get My Hands on, but Still Haven't Read
Dear Intrepid Reader, This is me, trying to get back into the swing of this blogging thing as my extra curriculars are beginning to slow down a bit. Is it weird to think of the things I do outside of work as extra curriculars? Perhaps? Regardless. I managed to miss yesterday’s It’s Monday, What Are You Reading post, so I thought I could make up for it with a Top Ten Tuesday, a meme hosted by…

Ten Books on My Spring 2024 TBR
I’m sneaking back into the blogosphere this week for a Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. This week: what I’ll be reading this spring (in just a list. Slowly trying this blogging thing again…). Before Spring Break, one thing I really started leaning into was listening to the books I’ve acquired through libro.fm’s Audio Listening Copies program for educators. I started this…

It’s only Wednesday…
Dear intrepid reader, It’s Wednesday. And the week feels interminable. So today, rather than drive my hour down the highway, listening to music or podcast, I have decided to talk to myself, and by extension whoever out there is actually reading this. As I began my commute today, I started thinking about how my approach to literature has changed, because I am no longer in the classroom. I find…

Marketing and the Science of Reading
Today, I took a call from a company selling supplemental materials. They wanted to know what additional supports our district might need for things like small group reading instruction. This, in and of itself, is not a big deal. I understand that calling the district-level specialist is one way that these companies get into schools and districts. Some of the companies I’ve spoken with have…

Ten Audiobooks for My Commute
I’m getting back into this blogging thing with a Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. I know this isn’t what I talked about doing, but right now it’s about building habits. This week was a freebie. I go back to work today (summer for district instructional coaches is shorter than what the teachers get), so I thought I’d start with ten books I’ll be listening to on my commute…
