Listen, I know it's soft sci-fi and we're not meant to think about it in depth, but also I love to imagine that Murderbot sorta just doesn't know shit about fuck when it comes to its own organic parts, like

MB: I don't take in nutrients like humans do. I don't need food or water.

Incorrect. Resupply lines are mentioned in the first book. At the most basic high-school biology level, if you need oxygen at all its because you're undergoing cellular respiration so you also need glucose. Not to mention potasium, sodium, other electrolytes and WATER!! All that shit is coming from somewhere. Either your one dinky little lung is pulling it out of the air somehow (I'd buy it for water at least) or the resupply lines function as parenteral nutrition.

MB: I don't produce waste.

Incorrect. Aerobic or anerobic, cells produce waste that needs to be filtered out of the blood, not mention cellular breakdown from trauma or natural death. Either there's some sort of internal recycling system going on, or the resupply and repair lines also function as dialysis. My bet is some combination of both.

Show MB: There's no dopamine there.

Maybe romance doesn't trigger dopamine release for you MB, in which case sure, but if you mean constructs don't have dopamine that's INCORRECT AGAIN! We know you have muscles, if you can move those muscles you have dopamine. If you have organic motivation to do ANYTHING you have dopamine. And we know you've got epinephrine, which is made in the same place as dopamine so you def have dopamine.

Show MB: Neural tissue is one of the best data transport material there is.

This one I fully fucking believe, because unlike wires you can send more than just On or Off. Neurotransmitters are so fucking complex if we could use them as WIRING!?!?!? No wonder every ship and system in MB has fucking emotions. No wonder a bot pilot can "Scream and die" when faced with killware. What the fuck is killware btfw??? Do we think it's part computer virus part datapacket that gets translated from binary to mRNA that then hijacks organic cells to fucking kill them?? Do you think there's killware that's turbo brain cancer or digital rabies??

There is so much biopunk potential hidden in the cyberpunk and I'm scrabbling for the crumbs. Martha Wells PLEASE I need ANSWERS!!!

saw someone say that if they found their traumatized friend sniffing their pillow for comfort they would find it touching rather than creepy and ok, that's a boundary you're allowed to not have, but if I stumbled upon my friend sniffing my pillow behind my back I would like them a little less and all my friends can take that as a warning

i don't take back anything i said previously and i think leebeebee is a bad addition to the show but i also think this entire adaptation is worth it for "if you don't do this thing, little jemmy is going to die"

here's a list of programs/sites/whatever that were helpful to me when i was moving away from using spotify & back to downloading music:

soulseek - peer to peer downloading program, has most music you'd want. there's "rules" to it though and the UI is a little confusing, but you can figure it out. there's tutorials. i believe in you

cobalt.tools, ytiz.xyz, yt-dlp - mp3 downloaders, for the songs that you can't find on soulseek

musicbee - music player, extremely customiseable. reminds me of when i used itunes back in the day. has a lot of good features, including syncing music over to your phone

lastfm & listenbrainz - sites that keep track of your listening stats. i'd recommend this even if you still choose to use a music streaming service

syncedlyrics - cmd thing that gets you timed song lyrics, like the ones spotify has. there's no UI but it's easy enough to use. just grab the lyrics and timestamps it spits out and paste it into musicbee

music presence - program that shows what song you're listening to in your discord status, in case you use discord and enjoy the thought of other people seeing what you're listening to, which i do for some reason

i'm not going to lie to you and say that switching away from spotify/streaming services is an effortless task, it took me half a whole day of nonstop Work to get all my music downloaded and sorted out, but i will say that it was worth it!! and you should do it 👍 if you want to

life is being a pain right now so I'm going to redirect my frustrations into complaining about the appletv murderbot show

spoilers ahead

my biggest gripe is that gurathin has been transformed into a pillow sniffing creep. hands down this represents everything wrong with the adaptation - the way it has worn down the anti-corporate message and the radical idea of a future that preservation aux represents

i get it, ok? i have my own blorbos that are scummy and flawed. but the whole point of presaux is that they are a radical vision of our future (care for its people, compassion as culture, resource sharing, universal care provided by leadership, etc.) that is successful! the story isn't about them fighting to establish that success! they've succeeded, and the reason the presaux team is kind of naive in book one is because some of them have never known anything different. they've had the privilege to be soft. all systems red is their first exposure to the corporation rim. pillow-sniffing gurathin is such an affront because gurathin the ex-corporate left for something better and he found that better thing! he doesn't want to be part of toxic corporate society! and though he can be an asshole and is very suspicious and, yes, assumes the worst of murderbot -- he is at his heart good! he lives the presaux ideals because he chose them and he can now afford to do so. and you know what would be unacceptable on presaux? SNEAKING INTO SOMEONE'S ROOM WHILE THEY ARE OUT AND SNIFFING THEIR PILLOW. uuuuuu i'm so riled up. book gurathin would hate appletv gurathin!

the tv show seems to think minor violations are funny like the pillow sniffing, and mensah standing there and talking to murderbot while it's naked and being repaired, and leebeebee forcing an awkward kiss on murderbot's chin. the amount of people who have found that last one funny!! hey did you know that despite being enslaved and forced to live a life of violence and constant violations of agency and self, the books don't contain a scene of sexual/romantic violence against murderbot? did you know this was the one area that murderbot was not depicted as being violated in? (an argument can be made for murderbot being forced to monitor clients in intimate moments as a form of sexual violation against it but at least that is not a violation enacted on its physical body) but haha, it's soooo funny to see it frozen with an uncomfortable expression on its face, right?

on that note, it felt regressive to introduce a messy throuple subplot when polycules are just a normal fact of life in the books, not just in the hippie dippy presaux crew but throughout corporation rim.

i also have a minor gripe with the scene where presaux picks murderbot because it's the cheapest option. i just feel like this is another small way to undermine the concept of a successful radical society. presaux has money! their objection to a secunit was ethical not monetary! they could afford the bond on mensah!

anyway apple's agenda is to tell us that humans suck, it's not the fault of corporations and capitalism, and people who believe in more are naive hypocritical hippies who are just as violating as everyone else. that's what we get when a major corporation adapts anti-corporate media!

(there are aspects of the adaptation I have been enjoying but this is not the post for that)

After the aroace, agender and autistic communities have really advocated for media to stop using unemotional robots that are killing machines and dislike humans as representation, I am extremely sad to admit that by far the best representation for all of those that I found recently, is in fact an "unemotional" robot that is a killing machine and dislikes humans.
