I have a great headache but have this.
A bg character that was created basically to be killed off in order to give my Devola a bit more of depth and reason behind her sword (and the wristband).
Goodbye No23, you were born to be killed quickly.

Headcanon of the day:
I think a lot about the fact in lots of the official materials they keep pointing out how DevPop are models that can eat and drink, something that apparently isn’t common among newer models for one reason or another.
Either way, that made me think Devola & Popola being able to eat or drink anything without repercussion (compared to YoRHa models (?)) is because their stomachs hold a highly corrosive liquid designed around their body’s Maso.
It’s capable of disintegrating any drink or food (as long as it’s organic), so it helps a digestion happen, without leaving any residual leftovers, whatsoever (why they don’t need to go to the bathroom).
Said liquid only reaches the stomach when their systems detect they’re eating or drinking something, but it finds itself on a closed internal cycle so it doesn’t need renewal. It recycles itself.
Newer models possibly couldn’t have said liquid because Maso is rare and scarce- YoRHa soldiers that were designed to die and be reborn having those materials would’ve been a waste and possibly really expensive, so they probably use a different kind of acid that leaves food like fish being dangerous for the systems due to oils and the like.
Magic-induced android anatomy goes brrrr.

I’ve listened to the Nier Drama CDs with my friend again and, you know what? The tools the Hamelin Organization developed to keep down any maso-induced experiments were probably things they used on my Devola and her Popola when they went to get them after the Project’s failure.
They didn’t affect regular humans/non-maso androids, but anything that had maso in them would be forced down, and it specifically made Emil so sick he threw up, so yeah, it makes sense they would have tools to stop magic-induced androids too, there’s maso in them as well after all, so that’s cruel enough.
The Hamelin Organization seemed to be specially involved with magical experiments so that’s that.

Okay here goes a biggie headcanon.
I have a set timeline after Ending E of Automata even when DevPop are pretty much confirmed dead in the epilogue (Farewell), and I can’t stop thinking about the recovery in my AU or the way they died.
Popola pretty much got fried the moment she opened the door for 9S. I can imagine her systems got so damaged that eventually it took her out completely.
Devola though, she made sure to get her sister, but after that she continued killing Machines until they were all out in the area. However, it was too much for her, there’s just so much she can do, she got highly damaged, and bleeding, she ended up carrying Popola’s corpse alongside her to the entrance of The Tower, to sit there alongside her, waiting for the ‘blood’ loss to end with her.
Unexpected to them, and knowing their bodies were just left at the entrance of The Tower, they would eventually be repaired. Surely, Devola got physical damage, so it could be repaired with time, while Popola got more of an internal system damage.
I can imagine while Devola was recovering from the physical wounds and blood loss, Popola had it harder to recover. My headcanon is that at first she couldn’t even talk because her systems were just in that horrible shape, sometimes even going blind or deaf and having her systems malfunctioning in general.
Hell, at first Devola was even angry with the decision of taking them back, but seeing Popola moving sure made her stay by her side until they both could be better.
As long as Popola lives, she will as well.

Also, I have this stupid headcanon of Devola and Popola models being aesthetically close to miko/japanese shrine maidens in the time they were helping other androids and Replicants against the last remnants of Legion to purify the world.
Being the ritual androids that sealed the maso into other dimensions, with their staffs and their little dances when they had to send the ‘evil’ away.

The reason for her magic powers being locked rather than completely removed is because Devola and Popola were designed to be magic induced androids from the start.
Trying to remove the function was too complicated and that would’ve resulted in the damage of their systems, so they just decided to lock the function instead, it was easier like that.
Now, trying to unlock the function is really complicated, and also a delicate process. If it was to be unlocked in a forceful way, it could also affect her systems.

Please read the translation of the short story ‘Futari’ that involves Automata Devola and Popola! It’s less known even when it gives information that’s interesting.
Because apparently the Devola and Popola from Automata never forgot their past after being reprogrammed even when in-game it’s told like that. It makes me think the androids who reprogrammed them didn’t want the truth to go out so they told them to shut up about that info (maybe threatening them with death).
Having them remember their past would feed the feeling of guilt, too.
And so, I wonder if before we enter The Tower in Nier Automata, Devola and Popola telling 9S that they would tell everything to him soon meant they were going to spill the whole info they actually had.
But they end up dying, so they don’t even have the chance to do so. It’s already too late.
I of course, used that canon info to develop some headcanons too about Devola and Popola’s rehabilitation and how they were manipulated and abused in the process. I tackled the topic a bit in my drabble Reactivation.

Also, I want to talk about the fact Devola’s still a magic induced android. The problem is that the ability to use magic has been locked because the android scientists that reprogrammed them were scared of that kind of power being a problem again.
With Popola and her not being good with hacking and the like, that function is locked deep within them. They have never been able to find it because it’s hidden in their systems.
Earth androids would never help them to try and get that function back. Maybe a talented Scanner android could do it, or anyone who’s good at hacking, really. But it would have to be forced one way or another.

Just as a side-note, my Devola and her Popola aren’t the only ones left on Earth, there are a few other models around the world even if they’re the only ones in Japan, BUT, when they were reprogrammed and they went through ‘rehabilitation’, they made them think that they were the only ones spared so they could control them better.
They’ve used it against them. They had to endure psychological abuse and manipulation for some time as well as shock therapy. And of course, making them think they’re the only ones left just increases the feeling of guilt or the burden they have on their shoulders.

Headcanons hour! (because my brain is mush rn)
In 2032 the creation of the Devola model was finished in the first half of March while Popola models were finished on the second half before being dispatched to oversee Project Gestalt. Elder and younger twin. Pisces & Aries if that matters.
This Devola model went from looking like in Replicant to going through all her Automata concept outfits until reaching the ‘canon’ one in Automata. It’s been too long and no more DevPop models were produced so, they’ve survived and changed.
Devola and Popola cut each other’s hair when they need it. What brings up the fact that, Devola’s skills to styling hair are better than Popola’s…probably.
Despite the maintenance, Devola sometimes suffers of what could be close to a muscle cramp in her left leg, because that’s what she got damaged hard that one time. Something akin to a 'scar’ can also be seen on the same leg.
Automata!DevPop were Head Observers of Hokkaido Sector A, Alpha (Devola) and Beta (Popola) respectively. Sector A covered the city of Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido.
The flower on her hair was put there by Popola, while Popola’s flower was put there by Devola. They came across a small field of those flowers in one of their trips and decided to keep them as a memory of a rare happy moment. (I actually covered this in one of my drabbles)

The ‘canon’ voice for this Devola is the Japanese one.
Japanese is also the mother language of her creators. As extra notes for this, Devola and Popola’s voices were designed over the voices that the daughters of one of their creators had, the creator that got the most attached to DevPop and that treated them well.
She was an old woman that lost both of her daughters to the WCS, and she eventually died on DevPop because she was old. They didn’t feel anything back then but, Devola remembers her fondly.
