{KISS WITH A FIST}

It’s not as though anyone is worried that Luffy won’t wake up after his fight with Crocodile; but it is unusual for him to stay down this long, and by the second day of Luffy being unconscious they can’t help being a little tense because of it. 

Each of the crew chooses to deal with this in their own way; Vivi and Chopper sit vigil by Luffy’s bedside, Nami makes use of the palace library to update her maps, and Usopp makes some badly needed repairs to the Merry. Sanji’s plan is to cook while Zoro’s is to train and meditate, but somewhere along the way their paths wind up crossing, and with both of them already on edge, it doesn’t take much for things to tip over into a fight.

In truth, Zoro’s not even sure what started it. All he remembers is snarky comments that quickly turned into heated insults and then threats of violence, and before he knew it, he and the cook had come to blows. That isn’t unusual. Nor is the thought that Zoro has when he catches sight of the furious expression on Sanji’s face right before he lets off a series of roundhouse kicks, which is: He’s hot when he’s angry. 

What is unusual is the part where, instead of putting that thought aside to consider and then discard later like he usually does (because Zoro’s not stupid; he knows Sanji is as straight as they come and that trying to hit on him can only end on abject disaster), Zoro lets the momentum of it carry him into grabbing Sanji by the face and kissing him. He doesn’t even fully understand why he does it; only that by the time Zoro realizes what’s happening, it’s already too late.

Stunned and furious with himself, Zoro braces for the undoubtedly brutal retaliation Sanji is about to unleash—not even intending to fight it, because he definitely deserves whatever’s coming for trying to pull such an objectively stupid stunt. In fact, Zoro’s so prepared for his inevitable ass-kicking that it takes him several seconds to realize that not only is Sanji not beating the shit out of him, but he’s actively kissing Zoro back.

Which is… really not how Zoro thought that this particular scenario would go, even in his wildest dreams.

It isn’t a nice kiss, of course; more like a fight with mouths, swords and kicks swapped out for tongues and teeth, everything between them still as sharp and mean as ever. In essence, it’s exactly the kind of kiss that Zoro likes best; and with Sanji seemingly on board, he can’t help but get a little lost in it, licking greedily into the cook’s mouth and nipping at his bottom lip playfully, wondering just how long Sanji’s going to let him keep this up.

The answer is—until Zoro bites down a little too hard and accidentally draws blood, at which point Sanji wrenches himself away. For a few moments all he does is stare at Zoro, deep blue eyes blown wide while his mouth opens and closes like a goldfish, no sounds coming out besides a garbled sort of groan. Zoro stares right back, breathing heavily and unable to help licking his lips. They taste like blood and cigarette smoke.

Then Sanji lets out a very loud, very heartfelt, “Fuck!” and Zoro barely has a chance to blink before the cook disappears.

That night, they avoid each other like the plague. The next day, Luffy wakes up, and a little while after that, they’re back on the Merry and sailing towards their next adventure. They don’t talk about it. Zoro’s a little disappointed, but unsurprised; after all, Sanji is still as straight as they come, and a single kiss isn’t going to change that. He chalks the incident up to a mutual lapse in judgement and resolves not to dwell on it.

And then one night, while Sanji’s doing prep for the next day’s meals and Zoro’s finishing up the dishes, they get into it over something. Once again, Zoro isn’t sure what, but it follows pretty standard procedure, going from bickering to argument to full blown fight, just like normal.

And then, out of nowhere, Sanji kisses him.

Zoro kisses back. And this time, he doesn’t let Sanji run.
